been working on the damaged carbon bonnet i got from raptorred, there were a few cracked bits to fix and a few chunks missing that i had to fix with resin and carbon cloth.

i need to apply a very little fine surface filler which ill do tomorrow followed by a coat of high build primer.

its very light, ill weigh it at some time to compare them, didnt know carbon was dangerous!? it pretty much just dust from the resin anyway (which made my burnt eye sore lol)

Ooo - like the way it looks like a stock bonnet (i.e. not just being black and fibrous)... but will weigh next to nothing.

If only they did all the panels on a mk1...! or do they...?

its not really any more dangerous than MDF or fibreglass dust, etc. anything thats fibrous will be a major irritant if you breathe it in too much though (and can probably cause cancer, but i think pretty much anything can these days, depending on who you listen to), and it will give you black bogeys for a week

its a good idea to at least wear a dust mask though when youre sanding resin and fibres, and i tend to wear goggles as well because the dust goes in your eyes and is irritating afterwards

looks like a tidy repair though, fairly sensible way of going about it, rather than trying to patch up the bonnet and keep the carbon visible. it should look complete stock by the time youre done, which will be quite cool. and id imagine its a MASSIVE weight reduction over standard

i reckon you could lay 5mm thick lead sheet across the standard bonnet, press it into the contours, and then lift it off, and it would still weigh less than the standard one!!!

and finally the top coat and laquer, ive flatted this back down with 1000 grade (a littlle too course) and g3'ed it for a few hours until i got bored wet and cold.

not very interesting but i thought id share it with you.

oh and with my clumsy scales it seems to weigh just under 8 kgs, anyone know the weight of the original?

I think the original weighs 7.5kgs, but yours looks great and 10 out of 10 for the write up!

I have no idea what the original weighs, probably about the weight of a mk2. That really does look like a top job though! well done!

jim-sr reckoned the original weighed around the 20-25kg mark, but that was an estimation, may feel heavy cos its a large panel, weigh your original when you take it off, let us know the difference

gotta be at least 20kilos easy!

Jim-SR

it certainly feels like at least 20kg, ive never had one off and weighed it mind. il be surprised if it weighs less

that carbon bonnet is still using the standard underside though. and id have thought thats where most of the weight would be. i never understand why manufacturers do that, all the bonnet really has is a carbon skin, which is generally the lighter part to begin with! it would probably only weigh 4kg with just the skin, and ally hinges and catch bonded on

im curious to see the weight of a stock bonnet now though

the underside is fibreglass i think, definately not steel.

ah ok, theyve moulded the standard shaped underside in composite as well. thats much better than using steel. lots of manufacturers use the actual steel underside though and totally compromise the whole point of going composite in the first place

I was actually anal enough to weigh my bonnet when I had it off (ahem) - 14kg.

superchargedsam

even though ive never actually held a mk1 bonnet i was doubting it to be around the 25kg mark, i was guessing around the 15kg mark

moved a few and they are hefty, must be the awkward size that makes them feel it!

an expensive way to remove 6-7kgs then!?
oh well, it all helps i guess.

raptorred is one of the members, i think theres a group buy on the bonnets, someone will know.
otherwise they are expensive and need to be ordered from the states.
