just a quick question!
My mate is selling a mig welder, its a portable one with a wee gas bottle but it seems pretty decent quality. It seems to be rated at 65amps,will this be big enough for stuff like engine mounts? What size welders do you guys have?
Cheers!

From what I know (which ain't alot) you need in the region of 120-150Amp for 4-5mm steel welding. BSM's the welding expert round here tho, sure he'll comfirm.

Think the one Dave lent to me is a 150amp one. That just copes with the 5mm steel i used for the mounts.

You starting another project chief?

too small murf - you get what you pay for with a welder - spend some dosh - you can get up to 200amp with a single phase supply and you need at least 130amp. 150-170 would be your best bet.

The trouble with the small bottles is that they don't last long.

I have a 220amp single phase machine (Migatronic) with a BOC Argoshield light bottle which goes up to about waist height. Cost about £900 all in though and you rent the bottle which is about £65 a year and £50 for a refill.

I have a 140 amp Hobart that is great for body work and works well with thicker steel as well. Before that I has a Campbell Hausfeld that I believe was 80 amp and it was terrible. Could barely weld sheet metal without it overheating and the welds were not high quality. It's also well worth the money to go with the larger bottle.

id go for at least a 140, mines a 165, ive tried the cheap clarke jobbies and found them to be useless.

Cheers guys, good advice!

Gas is no problem, we have an account at BOC for fridge gasses and OFN so i can get it no probs. 3Phase supply is dead easy too ;)

Just looking for the long term really, no plans to start any swaps :)
