Hi guys
I have been thinking of doing a mk2 3vz conversion for some time now and 6 weeks ago woke up one morning to discover that i had aquired a camry,
http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2007/09/147.jpg
I spent the next 4 weeks driving her about in favour of the '2:driving: , but as the tax ran out, so did the camrys time!
So this morning I managed to dodge my usual headache (for some strange reason i always seem to get headaches on sunday mornings, yet, can never remember what may have caused it!) and made a start,

http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2007/09/149.jpg
and thats the exhaust gone!
After 4 hours, I had reached this stage,
http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2007/09/150.jpg
It was at this point I realised I have no idea what the hell i am doing!, and am worried i have bitten off a little more than i can chew (and for someone with as big a mouth as me, thats saying alot!).
What do i need to be careful with and what can i just hack to pieces? Also, is there anyway to drop the engine down rather than lift it out? was getting to the point where i just wanted to cut every hose, pull every plug and just anglegrind the rest.
It all just looks like a tangle of wires and hoses at the moment, and my new haynes manual dont look so new now!
Am going to work on her more tomorrow night so may have some more pics and will deff have more questions.
Will keep you all posted

just finished the same this weekend mate. Basically just remove EVERYTHING from the engine. I took the inlet off for better access too. I found I had to remove most of the hoses to get it past the drivers side wing. Biggest problem for us was "hmmm is aircon gas hazardous ?!" we decided rightly or wrongly that it isnt, so we let it all out.... I probably wont wake up tomorrow morning.

don't forget the 4th ECU plug :)

Will make sure to get the plug when i get the ecu, tomorrow. Think my problem today was trying to keep and not damage everything. Felt better after removing the front topmember, i can see why everyone loves their grinders so much
As for the air-con gases, all i can tell you is that they are green and under pressure (a little like me, first thing this morning!), i was out of the garage too quick after that to notice anything!lol

Now i have got over the initial shock of starting, and have read a little more on here, i am eager to get back to it and carry on, if for no other reason than my friend is going to want his ramp free soon:rofl:(he hopes)
I felt a little bad cutting up the camrys front end, it was almost to good to break, but hey, needs must!

Great start Gary - Sorry I could'nt make it on saturday as i had an overheating prob - so did'nt quite get back to northampton until late saturday evening - spent sunday sorting said problem

good luck and as the guys said just remove stuff carefully.

Just start disconnecting stuff from the engine carefully - until there's nothing holding it in.
There's a connection (hose i think) just under and behind the air intake manifold - iirc for the power steering - I was trying to lift my engine out and was stcuk because of it.

Have you drained all the fluids?
engine, gearbox oil etc. otherwise it makes a right bloody mess.

I think it will help if you remove the downpipes - use plenty of wd40
then do the driveshafts

edit - also remove the aircon pump
Power steering pump etc

And as you have a lift - get underneath and just loosen the gearbox to engine bolts as they are a bitch to do when its hanging on a crane

Important - Loosen the crankshaft pulley bolt while the engines in the car

It's alright, just need to fashion an SST out of some scrap metal.

This is mine, on the floor, with the towel wrapped round it, yes it's 6ft long, yes i know it looks 30cm long in the manual.

I cracked 2 19mm sockets trying to get mine off -
If you get stuck try shocking it with a BFH (big fucking hammer)
Or maybe some heat.
I tapped mine with a small hammer.
and ended up standing on the engine with one foot on the breaker bar lol

Thanks for the advice Hasad, We will try to do as much as possible in the evenings (I have volunteered my housemate into helping!) and plan to get the engine out and on the stand sat morning. Not much achieved today, more wiring loom freed up, ecu and plugs removed, although i am ashamed to report that the camrys interior suffered no damage whatsoever!
Will try harder tomorrow!:hidesbehi

Well, had a couple of days where i was not able to do much to the camry, so decided that it was time to get on with removing the engine.
http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2007/09/222.jpg
This is where i had got to earlier in the week, and the sight that greeted me at 9am this morning.
First job of the day was cutting the driveshafts, i know they could have been unbolted, but where's the fun?
With that done and the mounts unbolted, it was forklift time (I dont have an engine hoist!)http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2007/09/223.jpg
Up, Up and away,http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2007/09/224.jpg
I want to cut the front end off and put the front seats in there, would make the engine bay a nicer place to behttp://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2007/09/225.jpg
And finally, engine out and autobox dead on the floor where it belongs!http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2007/09/226.jpg

Not the fastest moving project, i know, but have already learnt quite a bit (like how handy a bloody big hammer can be!lol ) and getting the engine out has given me a more positive view of the project. Hopefully tomorrow i can get the torque converter, crankshaft pully etc and ancillaries off and the engine on a stand, rather than sat on a pallet, slung under the forklift. Is there anything i should know or be aware of when stripping the cr*p off the engine?

make sure you use a service bolt on the cam backlash gear (probably said 1000 time by now) before you remove the cams

Definately put bolts etc in little plastic bags clearly labelled - a bit of a pain but it'll save a lot of head scratching later

Before you strip it give it a good wash, I wish I did. I had bits of crap all over the place.

Good idea about the cleaning, will do what i can, hoping to hire a steam cleaner for the weekend with my housemate and do a few of our engines down at the unit, anyway,
Not had too much time this week to work on the engine, but at least it is now on the stand,
http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2007/10/38.jpg

For someone who has never done more than change the plugs, leads, rotor arm and dizzy cap, its a small milestone, Recognize the stand Hasad? Thanks a lot, glad to be putting it to good use finally:thumbsup:

Now I can get on with stripping the engine itself, it just seems to get smaller and smaller. Long way to go yet, but am really looking forward to the end result:jump:

Its gonna take some time though!

Well, another week gone, and not as much achieved as I would have liked.
Some progress has been made though, inlet plenum removed, nearly all ancillaries removed, wiring harness off and about a mile of tape now stuck to various pipes and wires to remind me where the hell they all go! lol

http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2007/10/95.jpg

Although I now see what people are talking about with the size of it, every nut and bolt I undo just makes the engine smaller and smaller (maybe I should have named this post "Honey, I shrunk the V6!"

More bits on the floor
http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2007/10/96.jpg

A random visit from Garbe also helped no end, Having someone point at things and saying "get rid of that" sped things up, Thanks mate.

Am now failing into the "while its out, why not........" frame of mind, and as such am off to look for a fidanza
Will keep you all posted

Damn you!
After talking on sunday, I had already decided to buy one, was looking at ultrarev $319. Have you or anyone else dealt with gripforce? I have family in the states, so was thinking of getting it posted to them free, and family posting to me.

Managed to get an hour or so with the engine today, so a little more dismantling
has taken place.
Distributor, vsv and inlet manifold/fuel rails are now off, just the heads and sump left. Was quite amazed at how much crud had built up between the manifold and the heads, but nothing a vacuum could not sort out!

And more bits on the floor,

http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2007/10/109.jpg

I am finding the best way for me to do this, is to remove parts as complete assemblies and just work on one at a time, and yes, there is even more tape, with strange writing, stuck all over the engine telling me what goes where!

This does mean, however that the dining room is getting a new look to it,
http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2007/10/110.jpg

The bottom box is the inlet plenium/throttle body assy, the top is the manifold with fuel rails still attached. I dont think the fish in the tank are impressed!lol

nice i like to see progress - It wont be long till you are putting it back together. It'll be sooner than you think!

Im back, Its been a strange few weeks for me, hence not really being around for a for a while. Had a bit of personal stuff to sort, so not much time for working on the engine.
Had a bit of a buying spree on fleabay and was on a positive high, safe in the knowledge that boxes of goodies are on their way over the Atlantic and have had time to start preparing things like the inlet plenium (nearly ready for painting!

http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2007/10/277.jpg

Although my fingers did have a few minor disagreements with the wire brush!lol

All this came to an end on sunday morning, when i went to my mates garage to find this!

http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2007/10/278.jpg

As the camry was secure and left in a locked enclosure, I was storing some of the parts in it, so the first thing (after some very serious swearing) was to take an inventory......Dizzy-check, Starter motor-check, alternator-check, engine wiring harness? Oh you fu*king bastards! I realise that i should not have stored such a vital item in such a place, but the yard is always locked at night. I can only guess that it happened at the same time as someone was trying to nick the fitters land cruiser! either that or it is pikeys looking for as much copper wire as they can get to sell.
Needless to say, with no harness, the engine is about as much use as mudflaps on a tortoise, and has left me feeling a little depressed about the whole situation (aside form the fact that the interior of the camry WAS immaculate, and now is not quite so sellable).

I am hoping that my spirits and motivation will be lifted when new parts start arriving on the doorstep and will post more as i start getting things painted, stripped etc, but for now.........im off for a pint and a moan!

If it's any consolation the market is flooded with V6 camry bits so you'd probably have got jack shit for what was there, apart from scrap value weight.

Try those breaker's sites, you never know chief.

Its good to know that there are still people about who will help, most people these days just seem to be out for themselves. I am still trying to get my head around why they only had the harness, when there was more valuble items in the car. Still you live and learn, and ALL the items are now safely locked in the workshop, still broke my heart to see the poor old camry in such a state, only I am allowed to dismantle it!

On a happier note, had an email from ups earlier, Fidanza, timing kit and gasket kit are now clearing uk customs.
