Hi there guys, been reading the forum for a while now and has inspired me to have a go at my own mk1.5 conversion, so no doubt i will be picking your brains for lot of info over the coming weeks and months! I have owned various mk1s and mk2 over the last three years and currently have a mk2 rev3 tubby and a very broken mk1 in the garage which i intend to resurrect. My housemate even has a mk1 too so they are everywhere!!

So...my first question is, what is the best way to get the bolts off the underside of the intake manifold on the 4AGE? I have stripped down most of the rest of the bay and the body parts that need replacing, just need to get the engine out so i can begin to have a go at the body work properly.

Not easy in situ - drop it out with it attached, is quite tight but do-able.

Drop that bitch of an engine like Rampage Jackson dropped Chuck Liddell... then worry about bolts...

(I don't usually talk like that, but it's fun once in a while - welcome to the forum, and let the engine butchery commence!!)

Righto! Will drop with intake still on in that case. Just gonna have to work out how to raise the car to the correct height, oh, and buy and engine crane!

will an engine lift with a sling around the rear of the car lift it enough to slide the engine out underneath?

Pfft! Whatever - that's not very brutal...

I did it with my bare hands & a jack - only used a hired hoist to remove and put in the 3S-GTE...!!

It can be done - just like you can have a mk1a bumper bar with a mk1b skin - you just gotta believe... lol

Hehe - or you drop the engine without it and have a rear valence like this... nice clean 4A-GE on that one mind - like the sump... seems a shame to drop it lol

it helps to take off the throttle position sensor / throttle body when dropping, it gives you that extra inch you'll be wanting when it jams :), and the infamous 'oil cooler' pipe, and the front mount remove the bracket completely.

youve bent it to buggery though!!! lol

ive dropped an engine with my dad out of an MR2 without bare hands and a single trolley jack, theyre not a heavy engine in the first place (im proper weak, but my dad did most of the heavy lifting anyway :D), and once on the floor youve just got the jack the car up high enough to slide the engine under, and given that you slide it under the rear there isnt a great deal there to obstruct it once youve got the exhaust off

the easiest way though is to use an engine crane to drop the engine to the floor, ideally onto a board. then disconnect the crane and use it to hoist the car a couple of feet off the floor (stick a couple of the engine mounts back onto the chassis and wrap the straps round the bolts, be careful you dont choose somewhere that will bend the chassis or bodywork, etc) then slide the engine out on the board using your hands

the other way (worked on an AE101 Levin/Corolla) is to drop the engine onto the legs of the hoist and balance it, then remove the straps and raise the hoist, use a trolley jack either side to lift the car up, and simply wheel the engine crane out with the engine on it. so long as your sills are in good shape this method would work fine

either way, its LOADS easier with an engine crane than balancing things on a trolley jack. but its still do-able, just be prepared to use some muscle to move things around if youre only using jacks
