Has to be said, the Woodsport dolly must be a lifesaver; have shifted my lump around on a makeshift barrel trust with bits of wood and box section supporting it, I can appreciate things like that!

Garbe
11-06-2007, 20:06
Thats why i got a pallet truck jiff. took the cue from when fizzy's swap was done.

Paul i thought the pipe from hell was on the turbo - turbo oil pipe?

Paul Woods
11-06-2007, 20:08
thats the hose from hell, apparently pipes and hoses are two completely different things :)

:D :D :D :D

WOOO HOOO!

My poor engine though, I feel sorry for it sitting there all naked without it's car shaped clothing :(

I hope it's not the pipe from hell - it looked like it was only leaking from the water pump?

I wasn't expecting it to be started so soon! Chuffed to bits! lots and lots of little chuffed bits!

Cheers Stevie, was good to meet you too, I'll try not to take it as an insult that you think my car looks better without an engine :P Hopefully soon it will have the go of your car!

:hyper: :hyper: :hyper:

As before, you kept that quiet!!!
Guess thats why you werent overly concerned about the black oily smoke coming out of your engine lid vents after you nailed it up applecross!!

11-06-2007, 23:26
How many of you V6 buggers are there? Just thinking of the combined noise of a TB highland drive past. Worth stamping my passport and venturing north just to hear it :praise2:

All the best,

Owen.

Paul Woods
12-06-2007, 06:49
lol owen, passport indeed ,do you think if we brick up hadrians wall high enough we can stop the invasion?

Marksman
12-06-2007, 06:54
No need Paul, we just need to build a road to Scotland with a few hairpins and the odd tree at the side. This'll prevent the MK2 girlies making it south but will allow the MK1 boys to head north. Sort of an MR2 diode cum cattle grid sort of thing...

O.S.

12-06-2007, 12:46
Nice one mate, you'll need to let me hear this thing once its all workieing and back in Aberdeenshire or at next local meet...

WOW....You REALLY kept this quite didn't you mate... :)

You did say way back when mine was started you were thinking of having this done.

Excellent choice mate and you will be extremely happy with Paul and his service through out

Oh and welcome to TB :)

Portgordon
12-06-2007, 19:22
Yeah I decided I would keep quiet about it I wanted it to be a surprise - got to say it was hard keeping it quiet though!

I've been talking about getting the v6 for a long time (just nothing definite), basically since I first heard about it which wasn't that long after I got the car. Since then I've looked into it more and read a lot of the threads about it and it just sounded like the way to go! Especially as my car needed work done anyway - clutch is practically gone, oil leaks in a few places, water pump is leaking, potentially the coolant pipe from hell is leaking, engine bay could use a clean (my attempts at justifying it are getting lamer!) etc.... apart from that though my engine was a strong'un and was putting out 172 at the fly!

So I thought whats the point in spending money to fix all of the above when I could spend a little more and have something quite unique and very different. Not to mention the difference will be amazing!!

I was toing and froing over wether or not to get the headwork done, and given the cost and additional time delay I've decided to leave it till later (even though it will be more expensive / difficult to have done later). I will have it done later, but the power / torque on the v6 as standard is very impressive so I'll be happy with that for a while!!

OlberJ
12-06-2007, 19:38
Can the heads be swapped in situ on a mk2?

Portgordon
12-06-2007, 22:59
aparently so

OlberJ
12-06-2007, 23:09
It's a 2 spanners job then.

Get a spare set of heads and get them ported, then swap them yourself on a free weekend.

Portgordon
12-06-2007, 23:12
I'll go and buy that sledghammer first

fimmo
14-06-2007, 08:02
good to see the v6 getting more numbers up here in good ole scotland!!!!!! you will not be dissapointed mate!

best mod i've ever done bar none!!!!

when you getting it back (i know its just started lol) think it'll be ready for the next meet? lets face it,pauls chucking these out at an alarming rate now!!!

Portgordon
14-06-2007, 13:43
heheh, Cheers Fimmo!

It would be nice to have it for the July meet - 2x v6's would make an interesting one to be sure! I'll show you mine if you show me yours! lol

I'm not putting my name down for the meet though as it might not be ready in time. I'm just leaving it with Paul to do and he can advise on it's progress as he see's fit.

Would be excellent if it was though ;) ;)

Paul Woods
14-06-2007, 18:09

Portgordon
14-06-2007, 23:10
Absolutely Stunning! I'm dead chuffed with that colour scheme - it looks absolutely spot on  :jump:

The gearbox looks mint too!

Was the pipe from hell leaking in the end?

When you say that you expect it to be fuly finished by next friday......do you mean ready to collect?? :fingersx:

Absolutely top work Paul!

Paul Woods
15-06-2007, 07:17
we had a long hard look at the pipe from hell,it doesnt look like its ever been leaking,it has some slight discolouration around the brazed bracket but it defo wasnt leaking...oh we flushed out about 10 years worth of rusty silt crap from the cooling system,it was clogging everything up!

We hope to have it ready to pickup by next weekend yes but its too early to say for sure mate, lets see how it goes by midweek.

steviek
15-06-2007, 08:02
wow love the colour on this engine second 2 none 2 my red one anyway

gr8 work as always paul

Portgordon
15-06-2007, 08:03
Nice one Paul. Thats good news on the pipe  I had to make it a weekly task to remove all of the rust coloured gunk from the coolant filler cap and top up with extra coolant - how do you go about flushing it and do you know where it would have been coming from?

No worries on the eta. As far as I'm concerned if it's finished this month it's a bonus! :D

Cheers Paul!

Paul Woods
16-06-2007, 08:47
i reckon its all come from the old engine block,we flushed a hose through the radiator pipes for about an hour until it ran clear,we also did the heater matrix...you may still find the new coolant goes slightly brown as its impossible to get all of the silted rust out of the rad etc....but its not half as bad as it was.

Portgordon
16-06-2007, 15:53
Superb! Thanks a million five hundred and forty two point twenty eight!

that'll save me having to spoon out all the gunk from the coolant system each week :)

Oh and no putting non standard exhausts or air filters on the MK1V6's or you're cheating and lying and telling fibs all at once :hidesbehi

lol There is no standard exhaust or air filter for the mrv6's :P

Paul Woods
27-06-2007, 18:04
well the mk2 v6 pulls cleanly away from the stock rev2 turbo over the first 50ft by a good car length and then just keeps pulling away through the gears.

However mr sherrys mk1 V6SC obliterates the pair of them by a massive margin, not even close.

Portgordon
01-07-2007, 19:27
Well I'm pretty knackered after a lot of travelling this weekend but it's been such a good one despite the weather!

Left aberdeen on the 6am train on Saturday which got me in to Durham at 10:45. Was really nice and sunny all the way down until Newcastle where it started to rain.....and then pretty much didn't stop until I got back to aberdeen this evening where it's nice and dry again!

When I got to Woodsport and Paul said, "Well you'd better get into it and give it a drive".... I was a bit nervous to be honest! The n/a is (was) the most powerful car I've driven... The startup sound is sooooo nice :D My clutch before the conversion was on its last legs and was really high up for the bite, it's always been like that so I'm not really used to a proper one!

I got in and stuck it in reverse to take the car out for a nip around, the thing fairly launched back a bit unexpetedly! lol

I lined it up, stuck it in 1st and let rip and oooooh my gooooood! 8O
I've been for a ride in a few v6's now and been amazed but had never actually driven one! The feeling was just soooooperb!! I'm not used to having that much power on tap and it just felt so good, I couldn't really put it into words so when I pulled back up and paul asked how it was I just sat there grinning, giggling and making unusual noises which were meant to be words.

Chuffed to bits! The drive on the way back gave me plenty of time to test out various aspects of driving, motorway, B-Roads, Acceleration, high speeds etc... Everything about is just superb! On the motorway in 5th at 80mph I'm seeing 4k rpm, which sounds like a lot but it's actually not noticeable at all, and it really does mean that you can just plant the foot and easily reach high speeds without changing gear.

The car is filthy after the driving and the weather so no pics at the moment, but it really is amazing so i can't thank you enough Paul! (other than paying for it of course, hehe)

Thought I would post up some pics now that I've finally had a chance to give the car a thourough clean!

Spent 3 or 4 (lost track) hours yesterday giving it a good wash - even cleaned the Frunk and spacesaver!! Then a further couple of ours today on the interior etc...

I know this site isn't about cleaning :gay: , but thought I'd finish off my build thread with some sparkly pics

Hehehehe, cheers guys! :D Has made my day knowing that it's well received!!

The location is quite bizarre actually! I had a drive around looking for an ok location to take some pics and as I was driving past the river Dee (in Aberdeen), I saw a nice little empty parking bay right next to the river. Worked out quite well, even if I was getting all sorts of looks from passing drivers lol

Next for the two.... hmmm, well, I have a wheel bearing being replaced on Tuesday and I need to order the Fidanza flywheel & Replace my gearbox (looking at options on that). After that I'll be finishing the body work with some Airwalker (current choice) skirts, border rear spatz and an aftermarket engine lid which I havn't decided on yet.

As all of this is costing a billion dollars and I work in pounds, it will take a while! I have an endless list of where I want to be with my two, but thats part of 2 ownership!

Never loved the car more than at the moment :jump:

well marks car had an annoying vibration on gearchanges and it came back in on friday for investigation... so we whipped the gearbox off and there was nothing majorly visible causing the problem, slight scuffing of the flywheel bolt heads but not enough to cause the sort of vibration it was having,so we put it down to a defective clutch kit....anyway with a new clutch fitted shes smooth as silk again.

Mark asked me to take this pic during the job, check out our method of supporting the engine with no gearbox mounts attached :)

this is now the official engine support plank lol

How do you get the gearbox to that height to fix it back onto the engine?

Paul Woods
20-08-2007, 19:13
we lift it into place matey, strong us durham lads y'know!

OlberJ
20-08-2007, 19:15
See that's what i don't get cause it's a complete bastard 2 inches off the ground, is it easier at head height?

Paul Woods
20-08-2007, 19:17
yeah pretty much, just lift it onto your shoulder and guide it onto the flywheel, helps if theres two if you....one to take the weight and the other to guide it on.

Gearbox jacks are much easier though,i'll be investing in one pretty soon.

Is that the big coatstand dooferyswaff?

Portgordon
20-08-2007, 21:25
Heheheh, I just had to chuckle at it, but it really was a bit of genious.

The gearboxes are well heavy, I was well impressed they got it into place. I think a gearbox jack would compliment those lifts nicely though and further help save your backs!

The plank worked a treat though!

Gear changes are smooooooth now, which is nice. No more embarrassing juddering when in traffic :D Many thanks for the excellent service Paul

Just thought I'd say that my 2 just passed it's MOT without complication. Failed first time round on a brake pipe which was swiftly replaced.

I was expecting the guys to complain about emissions / lack of cat but not even a whisper of such things :D

excellent!

Marc, am up in your neck of the woods a coupla times a month now, when/if the V6 is ever done i'd love to come up and compare the 2 before i get into the mk2 swap myself.

Are you actually in Aberdeen itself or nearby?
