Why hello everyone! Long time no speak!

I have been a little ill recently, nothing to worry about as I am on the mend now! Probably even madder than before!

As some of you might know I bought a Camry a while ago now, which has been tucked away in a garage for a while.

Anthony (cantfindausername) has been working on his MR2 Turbo which is due to have stage 2 done to it next week, so we will finally have time to start on the camry!

I took some pics today to start my thread. We are planning on removing the engine etc and getting to my place within a weekend.

I will keep this uptodate as the project starts!

Carbon cannister from under the battery tray.

Carbon canister?? Is this the thing sometimes refered to as charcoal canister also? If so, can't we ditching it like we do on the 3SGTE's?

As for the dashboard modifications.... can I use my angle grinder on that bit?

You won't just don't scrap the Camry until you know you have every thing you need from it.

Make sure you keep the 4th ecu plug aswell.

That pipe on your engine looks like it will come in handy when you come to plumb the V6 into the 2

You mean the coolant pipe?

I was wondering about that earlier as the filler is on the other side isn't it?

sorry guys, it is my fault. I won't allow her any of my time because I have to get my turbo ready for delivery next friday. So next weekend we will be either making a start, or at least know when we're going to. JUst need to sort out the logistics about moving the car/scrapping the shell/getting the engine home etc. Basically a more thorough plan of attack. We will get nina v6'd soon though :freak3:

Damn I wish I had some money :(

cantfindausername

Don't we all want that lol

I'm considering getting a dead mk2 to transplant her 3SGE engine into. The engine is too good to bin, and then strip that out and have that as a dedicated track car. But I'm getting ahead of myself with this I think.

Need Nina to make a decision on what to do. Her car after all :D

Well greddy-matt on the imoc site is having problems with his lump...maybe a swift PM to him !

I have only just sold my old ge lump for £150, took me blooody agessss to get that for it. I did try n get a dead mk2 and use the engine that way, but peoples want farrr too much money for dead cars these days.

Good luck for the plans, or lack of plans you got !

Well today was the day when we started on the camry. We got it jacked up, and spent some time looking over the engine deciding what to attack first.

We decided it best to take the fluids out first, so I set nina to it. Was quite funny to watch the oil come gushing out to her surprise

While the fluids were draining, we set on the ECU and COR. We took out most of the control units to sort through what we need when we're a little more flush for time.

While nina was doing that I thought it might be an idea to remove the battery.

With the oils out the way we got to taking off the exhaust. I'd given it all a spray with WD40 and the downpipe nuts came off nice and easy. The CAT bolts... ha! No chance. I've never seen so much rust and disformation of a bolt.

So... it was time for the grinder

With the exhaust now on the floor I made another cut just infront of the CAT so we could dump the rest.

Once that was off we started attacking the loom. We again wanted to keep as much intact as possible, so about the only thing thats been cut off so far is the lights. Oh, and the A/C pipes.

By the end of the day we'd got all the ancilleries out, and (I think) everything disconnected enough to enable engine/gearbox removal.

Damn fine work folks!

If you chose to chop through the driveshafts then there's no immediate need to drain the transmission fluid, oh and it's fun too!

Damn you've got hairy armpits Nina :hidesbehi

May progress continue smoothly,

OlberJ
05-05-2007, 01:18
Yeah, you aint re-using the driveshafts so just cut them. Mind and do it nearer the engine cos if they're too long they catch on the engine bay on the way out.

Remember to remove the battery tray. Can be done with an angle grinder or split the spot welds with a flat chisel.

Make sure all the fuel pipes are disconnected and remove your lambda sensors, they're a bit fragile on removal of the engine.

Then enjoy swearing for 20mins trying to get the auto clutch off. lol

cantfindausername
05-05-2007, 08:07
if the clutch is a bugger that might get a dose of the grinder too

We'll be attacking them nice and early this morning, and I estimate a lunchtime removal.

Nina wants to know where the over-alls are.

And i want to know what this 4th ecu plug is. I'm sure we've taken out all 4 with the main loom, but we'll double check that.

Think its a blue one....you should get the COR ECU and connect all the plugs up to it, all but one will be on the engine loom and one will go off somewhere else on a seperate loom.

You should be able to find the bugger !

Yeah you gotta do those shots. Not everyday you pull a monster out of its cage.

We'ver just finished on the interior work too. Nina got the gauge cluster out while I looked for the 4th ECU plug.

Hoping someone can clear up a few things.

- Have I cut enough wire? There is about 11" of wire from the plug.
- 1 of the wires loops across to another plug ( see the pic ) whats this for? Should I cut this with as much cable on as poss?
- What part of the gauge cluster do we need?

finally got a chance to get on the laptop, ant hogging it all the time!

had a wiked couple of days finally getting the engine out! no stopping us now!

I have been thinking what I would like to do to the engine now we have it out, and I think we are concidering replacing the majority of the parts. This is due to the fact when we went to drain the coolant we realised the previous owner had filled it with water - causing the pipes to rust. Not good, but we will deal with it.

Ant has also been discussing with me about the twin turbo idea and the superchargers.

I think having now chatted to Ant about it, I am swaying more to the superchargers, especially after watching the footage of Jinjas!!

What kind of supercharger do I need to look for and also what prep do I need to do to the engine while its out for a supercharger?

The cor's that bit with the relays (circuit opening relay)
Don't need any of this - only the 4th ecu plug that you already have - I just cut the 4th plug out i did'nt trace where the wires went

In Pauls MK2V6 wiring write up he says - keep about 6" of wire on the 4th plug

But definately keep as much wire as possible from the rest of the camry loom, so you when you come to wire up, you have the correct coloured lengths to extend from the boot to the fuse box.

oh, we found quite a lot of crap in the sump. There seemed to be a few fracments of metal from somewhere, some gasket, and a washer that looks like its from under the head bolt (if they're similar to those of the 3S).

Looks great.

Glad to see you had the same strange colouring on opposite head cover's as if one has corroded more than the other. I thought i maybe had a cheap replacement on mine.

I see you got the camshaft pulley off. Do you have an SST or did you do it some other way?

midnightraven
13-05-2007, 15:51
Tony - hopefully they did replace the washer but we wont know until we get the cam covers off.

OlberJ - we used the same method for camshaft and crankshaft pulleys; two flywheel bolts locked in place against the engine stand using a very old "pin handled" spanner. we can do a pic if you like to show the tool, and what the same method did to a screwdriver lol

Can i have a pic please. Do you mean you used 2 flywheel bolts into the 2 threaded holes in the pulley?

then a bar across those and an open ended spanner to turn the pulley bolt out and push the plate with the flywheel bolts out and subsequently push the pulley off?

OlberJ, we'll get you a pic of the set up as it will save me explaining it. :D

Looks like its on hold again as the gasket set that we bought is only for rebuilding the head, so thats really put me in a bad fucking mood.

This is pretty much useless, so if anyone wants a head gasket rebuild kit, let me know, and you can have it for £45 as I paid for it.

OlberJ
18-06-2007, 18:15
That's all we ever get methinks.

Head gaskets, and ruber gaskets for head and paper gaskets for inlet. Thassit.

Garbe
18-06-2007, 21:35
Which bits are you after ?

I have some stuff left over from my gasket set as I did'nt change the oil pump or the crank shaft end seals.

I'll take some pics tomorrow

I'll probs just get the whole lot from toyota as I bought bits and pieces with my engine build and it cost me nearly 3 times as much as buying the full set outright

Managed to get back out to the engine today after a few weeks off...

Here are the latest lot of pics. Really pleased with how the sump came out!!

There is so much dirt and crap on this engine though. Alot of which has fallen into the cylinders when removing the inlet and heads, so we've spun the engine and will try and get them blown out before we attempt to move the pistons in the cylinders.

The bores seem to still have the hatch marks on them which is good, however, the front bank inlet cam has some scoring on the journals. I will have a go at getting some pics of these up when I bring my proper camera round to Ninas tomorrow.

The head gasket was well stuck to the rear bank, so will need to work at getting that cleaned up.

There seems to be some carbon build up around the top of the cylinder bores. Wondered if this was normal or not?

Also you can see just how rusty the water ways are.

Cheers guys. I'm making sure that Nina does majority of the work, its her engine after all.

I think we're gonna need to pay particular attention to the cams. I'm not entirely sure what can be done about them if they're worn. Need to check the heads to see if the journals are worn on there too. I don't really know what to do if they are? Any suggestions?

We haven't cleaned the block yet.

We should be ok to take the crank/rods/pistons out and reinstall them as long as we put them in the right order right?

Anyone got any spare stock cams laying around just incase these are not usable?

Ant

The heads and cams are down at AdamH's ... thankfully he tells us they look worse in the photo than in the metal.

Hopefully when we get these back from adamh we can get back to work on the project.

Many Thanks Adam for your help!

n/p guys, i'll report sizes once torqued up, i luckily have some accurate cam journal sized pieces of metal i turned up before for lapping the seats in, so they'l do well for acting as a dummy cam, then whip out and measure bore etc.

actually, i have every other torque spec for the engine ..but not the one needed.. cam shaft caps to head.. does anyone have it?

hello folks, can you give me a little help as to identifying the heads, to me they seem identical, so i'm not sure which is the front bank or the rear bank. the marks on the heads were:

head 1: 1-6A / 12 and 7 / V7 on the side faces

head 2: V & V16

there was also a dash (4mm thick line line about 20mm long) of light yellow paint on one of the heads.

also the camshafts, which cam go's to which bank etc:

intake cams marked cam 1: N3
cam 2 : N1

exhaust cams 1: 6
exhaust cam 2: 7

hope you can help.

if anyone else can give me a positive i.d point that'd be great

Only info I can give at the mo is that the rear bank has 3 rusty water way holes. The front bank, where there are 2 holes together, one should be clean as its blocked off by the inlet manifold.

STill looking for the cams. Some/All of them should of had which they were written on the bubble wrap.

cantfindausername
17-08-2007, 08:32
Intake cam on the front bank is the longest one as it has the dizzy attached to it.

Still working on identifying the exh cams.

adamh

ive measured everything but the caps assembled, so i'll hang around and apply what ever information you can find before i assemble. the only thing marked was the caps in bags.

cantfindausername
17-08-2007, 19:15
I know I wrote on at least one of the cams cos I remmeber writing on bubble wrap being an odd experience lol

Do the bits I mentioned above all check out ok?

adamh
17-08-2007, 22:59
they may do, i'm at home and cams at work lol , p.m me your phone number and i'll give you a buzz if its going to be o.k for collection tommorow. the cams are still in origonal bubble wraps after cleaning/polishing /measuring, we'll see.
