You need to make sure your compressor is up to the job. My Spray gun consumes about 8.9CFM (Cubic feet a minute) of air. I used a 3HP 160 llitre tank compressor.

A gun is required. Mine was £110 but you can get cheaper. The nozzle tip i used was 1.5mm

I used 2K paint and the local spray strore will give you all the stuff you need such as 2K thinners, activator and paint. Think I got 5 litres of paint. The paint I used had a 4 parts paint, 1 part activator and 0.5 parts thinners mix. You get different paints for different things and the above was for an air drying paint as opposed to oven stuff. Local store will help you as they get loads of twits in wanting to spray for the first time (like me).

The spray store will also supply you with sanding paper of different grades from sanding the old paint down to very fine stuff to rub the orange peel out of the paint and then polish with rubbing compound.

As well as high build primer you will need etch primer if you have exposed any bare metal and also activator (50/50m mix) for this also. All the above plus mop for polishing, measuring stick and cellulose thinners to clean the gun cost about £170.

That was for a solid colour so easier to paint (I say that while laughing as there is loads of skill needed which I aint got) and it avoids the need for laquer too.

Suggest you buy a book first and start from there.

Its major fun seeing the paint land onto the primer for the first time. Its just when it dries you see how much of a pigs ear you have made of it.

Don't forget a mask. Diff masks for diff paints. With 2K it contains deadly fumes so air fed mask was the order of the day for me. You can get filter masks for it but its not recomended as you never know when they saturate and then let the fumes into your lungs (This stuff kills you or gives you lung problems). Loads of local spray guys do use the filter masks though.

The country has just converted to water based paints but you can still get 2K from old stock. The problem with water based paints is that it takes longer to dry and you will need loads of heat to dry it. 2K dries in air.

If you can do it all in one day or something close to it. I`ve been painting somethings now and other things then. Its a bitch cleaning the paintgun after each small item..:)

I paint cars everyday if your going to paint 2k i would advise using an airfed mask, but your compressor will need to be around 25cfm to support the gun and masks needs.

it takes alot of practise to paint cars and get a good finish but good luck hope your a natural

I'd say get white paint aswell, stay away from red.

the only problem with reds are matching faded paint or painting over it with another colour

Yes but then your car will look less like a baby Ferrari and more like a hairdresser's chariot of choice...

Dark grey defo.

I loved Megatron's white with black roof but dark grey would be awesome.

if you are doing the whole car then it doesnt really matter, the paint code is on the plate in the front. but there are only two white colours if i remember correctly.

Makes it look like a mini NSX.

White just shows the Age of the Aw11. It makes the ol 80s lines show up too much.

Theres a black one on this forum and from front on it looks like its straight from a factory:thumbsup:

i don't mind it showing its 80's lines as it is from the 80's

part of tha apeal of the mk1 is it 80's retro lines

OlberJ

Itsa not really the 80s thing, its just that white seems to make them look older then they would in another colour.

But if you wish to paint them white go ahead, It is your car after all and im just stating my opinion :)
