Hi,

Is it just me or it reeeeeaaaallly difficult to get a decent set of rear tyres for the standard 15" wheels?

Hardly anybody seems to be making 225/50/15's anymore - the only decent ones I seem to be able to find are toyo t1r's - but my local dealer is having problems getting them in. "Delivery problems" apparantly.

Am I missing somethings somewhere?

Think I need to get some 16's instead. Anybody know where I can get a set of new 16" staggered wheels suitable for the mk2?

- Ian.

Yup - Toyo's are about it with them. :(

Mytyres gives :-

Nankang "EX500" - No thanks, hate nankangs!
GT Radial "Champiro 50" - ....erm never heard of 'em?
Hankook "Ventus Prime K105" - Heard of 'em but don't think I've seen 'em on a 2.
Falken "ZE-512" - Again know of these but didn't think they were rated that highly?
Toyo "Proxes T1-R" - My tyre of choice since bridgestone stopped making this size.
Fulda "Carat Extremo" - erm.... what?

Top - "Top Quality" - erm..... el cheapo generic make?

...and thats it?

I don't mind paying a premium on tyres as I've always put decent/high brand make on the rear of the 2 for my peace of mind. Used to get SO3's but they don't make 'em in this size anymore....hence toyo's last set or two.

Black circles is even less!

Hankook "K105" - No idea on those...as above
Toyo "Proxes T1-R" - as above ;)
Toyo "R888" - Designed for track use mainly?

....so looking incredibly rare size in a decent tyre these days?

christ just looked and thats a well restricted range! time to move to 16s I rekon!

God know why they are stopping those sizes, was only 2 yars ago 16" were real hard to get

I think its because not many cars (probably mr2 only? >:[ ) use 225/50/15's these days - modern suspension setups tend to prefer lower profile tyres?

E-tyres list :-

Toyo T1-R
Yokohama A022
Toyo R888
Dunlop SP9000

Still a small list but a couple of options not listed on the others....

decent prce on the dunlops as those get pretty reasonable reviews!

Bridgestone potenza s02/03 215 50 vr/zr 15 are my choice, everything else seems pooey!

Yeah, but I want to stick with the original rear 225/50/15 setup, and SO2/O3's aren't available in that size anymore... :(

Can still get SO2's in the front size easily though. (195/55/15's).

I run the Fulda Extremos on my 17's and they seem to work well for me. Anyone whos had a run in my car can tell you they seem to do the job reasonably well.

At this time I am after information on tyres available for standard 15" rear wheels....

....stop getting my hopes up by mentioning tyres that aren't available in 225/50/15's... :hand:  :P

:D

.....oh, the Fulda are available. I even have 'em in my list. Lol.

Thats why I mentioed it :)

I know I have a different size but the tyre brand and model have worked for me. Might be worth a shot if the price is right :)

Hmm.. mixed reviews from what I can see. They are a "new silicon based compound" which has varying grip levels depending on temp. They seem a lot worse in cold weather, and also loose grip a lot as they wear down...?

A lot of "issues" for such an expensive tyre. Some people rated them very low too - which is odd... ?

I had a pair of these on my previous mk2 - Fulda Carat Extremo. Decent enough tyre, never had a problem with them, seemed a good all rounder, but for some reason liked to 'chirp' alot going round corners etc. probably more so with V6 torque.....

Can't see them listed anywhere in standard rear wheel sizes, only the Falken ZE-512's.

Understand they aren't quite as grippy as the toyo/bridgstones, but do last longer - probably means a harder compound?

Still trying to get the Toyo's for now. If I manage to get some this time it will give me a little breathing space to get some long term replacements. Otherwise I'll have to run around in the puegeot until I get some wheels sorted.......

Hmm.... whats the "correct" fitment of tyre for a rear 16" wheel?

I think the closest match for radius would be 225/45/16's, but theres not a lot of choice there either.... ?

There is a wide selection of 225/50/16's though - how would that effect the speed, handling etc?

I think I opted for 225/50/R16 at the front and 205/50/R16 at the front. They fitted fine and the speedo read spot on as it used to read 5mph over at 70 with 15'' wheels. The handling was superb, it completely cured the understeer and made the car nice and balanced.

The handling with the fk452's on those wheels was amazing, the car was nice and progessive and really good to drive. I didn't have any brown trouser moments with them and the guy I sold the wheels to also said the handling with those wheels was spot on.

With my old 15'' wheels which had bridgestone potenzas on, I did find them grippy but they wern't at all progressive and you would often get caught out as you couldn't judge where the limit was. I also had a full set of toyo proxies T1-s on 14'' wheels for a trackday with low profile tyres. I found the grip awesome but they wore down too fast and again wern't progressive on the limit!

I run champiros all round on a GLimited, and I think they're fine, good life, nice gentle breakaway, they maybee just suit my driving style? though I have this nagging feeling I'm missing out on something with a softer tyre, maybee they would be unsuitable for a V6 or Turbo though, so I wouldn't recommend them to others...

My mate had a set of r888 fitted to his mk2 and I must admit they are mega impressive. Must be one of the best mods you can do to a car. We were going round roundabouts at 70 mph, we were cornering that hard that my spleen nearly came out my ear. That was running a set of coilvers, uprated anti-roll bar and all the bushes replaced.

I'm after a set for mine once I get some coilovers fitted.

You don't want to be running those in the wet, or cold weather phillys - and living where you do - thats 24/7 lol.

I'd go 16" and get Eagle F1 GSD3's. Swear by them.

Any recommendations where to get staggered width 16" wheels that won't mean having to sell my wife and daughter into white slavery?

You could use the scouse method? Find a nice car with 16" rims, pop around with a jack ...
