View Full Version : 2 days from hell.....

not often mechanical things dont go well for me but i thought id share two days from hell.... ive got jinjas mk2 v6 back for a clutch fitting, the stock NA clutch just wasnt holding the power of those ported heads and TRD SC....so on thursday i started fitting the ACT 6 paddle jobbie.

As mk2 owners will be aware doing a clutch on a mk2 is a horrendous job, around 6 hours of removing the exhaust, subframe, driveshafts, mounts and everything connected to the gearbox and finally the box itself....nasty! so i was pleased i got it all done in 5 hours from start to finish. To recap this was the 5s-fe clutch kit that no one had ever fitted to a mk2 NA flywheel before so i was doubly cautious about checking everything as i went.

On completion i started the car up,engaged all gears fine and pulled it out of the workshop, sat there idling i was pressing the clutch up and down and then this chattering noise started from nowhere!!! press the clutch again and it went away, press it again and it came back....randomly chattering each time you pressed the clutch and released it again.....argghh i do not fucking believe this!!! a problem with the clutch???

I sat there for ages just pressing the pedal and it would be perfect for maybe 15 depressions of the clutch and then on the 16th depression and release it would chatter....wtf???

SO i went home and got rat assed,or artois'd as its known.

Today i went in full of vigour, right nothing else for it,lets have that bastard gearbox back off...3 hours later and i had it in bits again and the sports clutch in my hand, not a single thing wrong with it,no metallic contact points on it, no rubbing,no chaffing, nothing!!!! then i picked up the booklet that came with the clutch....and it read....

"for the initial running in period or if there is a greasy film on either flyhweel or pressure plate the clutch will.....wait for it......chatter!!!!"

%^(*(^$£%()))*%$£££££^&*((((*!"!"()*^ !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

so id only gone and removed the gearbox and done a full days work for absolutely no reason at all,the chatter goes away after a few hundred miles! how pissed off am i? stop laughing at me,twats!

Upon rebuilding the car the clutch doesnt chatter at all,i gave the fly a quick emery to help bed it in....so a word of advice if anyones about to install one of these clutches, ignore any chatter it makes, you havent fitted it wrong.

Im going to get pissed again tonight

Reminds me of when my Dad got given an escort as a company car -first of the mk3 escorts and dad was none too impressed.

Driving us to school one morning, the engine started to make a funny noise; My old man is old school so religiously checks stuff like oil, water and tyre pressures - Not so on the escort. Up went the radio volume. 2 minutes later when the oil light was on, and we all asking him what it means, he turns the radio up more. Get to school just in time to have the engine seize.

Suppose it's one way to get a different make of company car!

What a bitch , i know what it's like you go home thinking the arse off it what could i have done wrong . And as you say when you have fitted hundreds of clutches ya not going to read the manual . They could put a sticker on the pressure plate or something so you can't miss it .

Your right about the bit where guys don,t read manuals.I bought a new Ford Fiesta XR2 and within a few days i knew i could take this particular corner at more than 70 but i had,nt got a clue what the little joystick thingy was on the dash till a new girlfriend told me it was the fader for the radio, seems i had been driving round for months with the rear speakers switched off,she centralises it and wham! loud balanced music...Cool.

My girlfriend still chatters all the time after three years. i bedded her in correctly too.

Then read the manual and found out its standard an this model, just that the volume is either very loud when she's in a bad mood or F**king loud when she's in a very bad mood.

thought she went quiet once but she was just catching her breath!
