Any of you chaps had any experience of these puppies?

I've been discussing the practicalities of shoehorning one into a Mk1 with Malcolm who's a big Saab & Mk1 fan. They're 220bhp stock, but easily raised to 270bhp just by re-progrmming the ECU (Malcolms friend can do this for next to nothing) and with a little work can reach 380bhp. Another reason for considering the engine is he can get one reasonably cheaply.

I've never even looked at one so haven't the foggiest. Biggest problem we can see is gearbox and drive shafts.

Thoughts on a postcard.

nope they did a limited run of cars called the viglen or viggen after the jet and had very powerful engines in them !

Didn't know that Sam, may well be the same engine.

Would certainly be a challenge.

think it was early 93 or 95, smaller of the two so possibly the 93, think it was quite a high horsepower motor and was only abut 500 made AFAIK ! sort of car you look at and think boring rep mobile but the figures for it at the tima said different !

you can tell its the viggen by the symbol above the side repeaters on the wing, tis the symbol of thier aircraft engine heritage I believe ! I would be happy with that as a daily runner as nice motor that !

So would the engine + gearbox fit in a Mk1? :hmm:

We were thinking an electronic (flappy paddle) gearbox may be easier seeing as there's no faffage with shift linkages, but the fun of transplanting all those electronics into a MK1 is beyond my capabilities! lol

Funny this should pop up - I went to see a mk1 owner near Jedburgh to deliver an exhaust and sump (the drive was loads of fun!). Anyway, when I was chatting to Garry (or was it Garry's dad? wasn't sure lol) he mentioned the Saab engines were tuneable and he would like to shove one in a mk1.....

So....can it be done?

What are Saabs like for prices of spares?
