Hi all,

was having a browse around for stuff that might be handy for those few of us sticking with the 4age / 4agze engines and came across a site detailing the engine build of a drift corolla. They've replaced the standard shim setup for the valves with one piece bucket shims from a toyota yaris of all things. Was wondering if anyone else had heard of this being done or had any more info about it, might come in handy for anyone overhauling one of the 1600's (maybe some new valve springs and up the rev limit?).

Cheers again for ya input

Alun

I have heard of this but decided it wasn't worth doing on my engine. It's quite a bit of work unless they're needed or you have the head in bits anyway.

Alun got a link as be very interested in this as was having a conversation about shimless bucket conversions for a high power 3SGTE only yesterday !

Found another link that has some info

losing 20 grammes from the valvetrain at a time can't be a bad thing. The turbo I've got should be good for airflow to about 9000rpm on the 1600 anyway so might have a better look at this when I'm cleaning up the head.

Shimless buckets are not new when it comes to the 4AGE or the 4AGZE. I have a friend over here that has a mostly Corolla/MR2 repair shop and they have done this shimless bucket conversion many times over. They do not recommend this when just doing simple upgrades but when extensive headwork and cams with ITB's and better exhaust work is done, these come highly recommended. They have a motor revving to 11200rpm and its a screamer. Unfortunately the motors power is all very high up in the rpm's and its use is only for track days. We have yet to compete on any level and are still working out the bugs. Starlet + 4AGE + widebody + cones= LOTSA FUN!!!

Nice one Anderson, cheers for the extra info mate. 11200rpm :eek2:
What springs are they using to keep float down at that sort of RPM? If I didn't plan on having boost from the word "go" that'd be a really interesting project, it must sound insane..

(sits there pondering what turbo he'd need to feed 1600cc @ 11200rpm.....)

No turbo, just ITB's, Lotsa head work(for some reason they keep a lid on exactly what part numbers they have assembled into their head), dry sump lube system, and what looks like a full compliment of Formula atlantic parts smattering the engine bay. Its a completely cool car but they are afraid to really track it due to the amount of time and money invested. A motor with that kind of rpm value is definetly not for the faint of heart or pocketbook for that matter. I do know they had to order a special crankchaft to allow for their rpm's to run up that high without spinning everything apart. The motor is basicaly a formula atlantic motor less a few little bits and the official title.

halve those prices for sterling equivalent on current exchange rate ! So for About ?950 you could have steel billet crank, billet cams and double valve springs !
