Picked up the MZFE, it does look daunting! Anyhoo

Situation is the engine is complete(ish)

Alternator (Check)
Plastic carbon filter box type thing (Check)
Loom - somewhat butchered, it's been cut about a foot from the engine. But all the connectors are still there so it's rebuildable but I think I'll have to strip the loom cover off and redo some bits.
Exhaust manifold - again somewhat butchered. The rear bank is complete past the O2 sensor (still there with wires:shades: ), front bank chopped just after they meet up.
ECU - went to the crusher with the car
COR - see above (what is a COR anyway) :cadet: :imslow:

The guy at the breakers didn't reckon it had done many miles but I'll probably be changing all the rings and bearings anyway, cos he had no record of the millage. I would have taken some pictures but I left the camera in the car and the engine will be residing in my mates barn until I complete on my new house (and garage).

So what do you reckon? :hmm:

Cheers

Chris

as long as its got the injector plugs and sensor plugs you can easily run a megasquirt or other standalone to power that....thats what id do anyway....

Did it come with the AFM and coilpacks on top of the engine?

Limeymk1
06-08-2006, 11:09
Nothing pre throttle bodies (Twin valves).

I imagine the coilpacks are there as the plastic top hadn't been removed.

I'm trying to download the manual to see what's missing. Really cheesed off I forgot my camera, it would have been useful for checking on things I forgot to look for (such as AFM).

Agree that standalone has to be the way to go with the MZFE, I was considering ITBs as well.

Paul Woods
06-08-2006, 11:18
well i wouldnt worry mate, all standalones these days come with built in MAP sensors so you wont need the AFM anyway

Limeymk1
06-08-2006, 11:22
So what does COR stand for Paul? I'm sure I'll know exactly what it is once I know what it stands for.

Still can't get the bloody manual downloaded!

Curcuit Opening Relay if i remember correctly

Paul Woods
06-08-2006, 12:03
yep,its a glorified fuel pump safety cut relay for those special moments when you ram your mr2 into a wall and dont want fuel pumping everywhere....not really necessary to be honest as you would be deed anyhoo.

Gotcha, I know the puppy!

With a stand alone ECU I guess I could use the Mk1 COR. I've got a Mk2 Turbo fuel pump already so that box is ticked.

Paul Woods
06-08-2006, 12:56
well not quite,a standalone may not have the output feature to hold a COR open after cranking....on the v6 the AFM does the job,but if you are going standalone then no AFM.....so catch 22...to be honest theres no need at all for a COR,just a toyota toy.

Limeymk1
06-08-2006, 13:16
Cheers Paul,

So what does the Mk1 COR use as it's input seeing as there's no AFM or have I got my wires crossed and there's no COR in the MK1?

Chris

Scuse the nooby questions, the electrics of the Mk1 are one few things I haven't played with.

Paul Woods
06-08-2006, 13:27
the mk1 and mk2 use an earthing signal from the ecu that holds the COR open after cranking, the v6's use AFM earthing signal.

Anyone got any idea on how the VVT-i system is opperated on the 1MZFE?

who gives a toss about vvti when charlottes there lol

limey its controlled by the stock ecu but i believe some standalones have the fucntions to control it,needs research though bud.

Cheers Paul! Looks like it may be a bit much for the MS, will have a dig.

Charl's singing 'Boy I love ya' I think, best video she did, can remember what the song's called.

What do you think this young lady's saying? (courtesy of locostbuilders, honest)

This VVT-i stuff's damn complicated BTW! :nerd:

Limeymk1

What I've learn't so far:

The 1MZVE with VVT-i generates 230BHP @ 5800rpm and 242ft-Ib torque @ 4400rpm  Earliest car it's from is a 2002 Camry.

The VVT-i is a constantly variable overlap, depending on the engine load. So at start-up there's no overlap between the inlet and exhaust but as the load increases the inlet cam is advanced so there is valve overlap to increase torque and efficiency. This is controlled via a solenoid valve which allows pressurised oil into either a 'retard' or 'advance' channel to adjust overlap. I've got some JPegs of how it works but my pic hosting site's down at the moment.

I reckon if I can find out the voltage range which controls the solenoid valve I could get the MS to control it, although currently no-one has used a MS to control VVT-i, it has been used for VVT. :thk: Otherwise one of those nice 'volume control' dials on the dash! lol

Weight is about 60Ib less than the 3SZFE.

Further Update:

VVT-i is Pulse Width Modulated (PMW) in a similar way to the injectors! :icon_eek: According to the few people that have seen the mapping it's absolutely huge!

I'll dispute that, AFAIK the 3SZFE weighs 0kgs, as there is no such thing :P

Well I took a quick look through your pics limey, and all I can think of is 'nice browser choice'. mmmm Firefox. :banghead:

damn this is gonna take a while for me to get up to speed enough to put a 3VZ in my polished turd. :D

Oh and it looks like that girl is saying "Push-Up bra please".

But I don't use Firefox!

I shouldn't worry about the above details, they're for a 2003 1MZFE the VZ doesn't have any of the fancy bollocks that this engine does.

Definitely the VZ wins on that front but I don't want mega boost or 8 zillion HP.

Plenty of people in the States who'll send the MS kit over to you Sparky.

www.diyautotune.com are a good lot. The guy who runs it is a mr2oc.com regular.
