Howdy folks.

The 1st jig thread was getting a little long so I thought I'd start a new one just for booking the use of the TB 3SGTE into AW11 engine mount jig.

For those new to the 1.5 funhouse the jig is a bit of kit cobbled together between Paul and myself that allows engine mounts to be easily located into a MK1 chassis without the need to faff around putting the engine in first and lining things up. (Please note this is NOT suitable for "fat arsed, tartan travel blanket wearing, I should have been born an American" type V6 swaps, just the true bred 3SGTE goodness.)

The jig in use in MisterTwoKW's swap.

*** UPDATE, pre-cut engine mounts are now available and can be shipped with the jig upon request. Priced at £25 to big members. ***

http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2006/07/100.jpg

Alternatively free downloadable engine mount templates are provided in this thread:-Templates (http://forums.twobrutal.com/showthread.php?t=1868&highlight=templates)
You can either cut these out yourself from plate, or hand the cad file straight to a machine shop.

The story of the jig can be found here:- Old thingymajig thread (http://forums.twobrutal.com/showthread.php?t=1843&highlight=thingymajig)

We don't really do terms and conditions at TB but I'm afraid there are a few for this one...

(01) A recipient must post a request on this thread, this will then be OK'd and the jig sent off. (If you would PM me a telephone number this would also be appreciated.)

(02) Please don't ship without an OK first. I'd also request that the sender also post when the jig has left their possession and the recipient to say that it's arrived safely.

(03) The jig must be shipped insured for at least £200. It has taken a long time to build, and its loss would be an inconvenience. A method of shipping requiring a signature is also a must. (To give an idea I was quoted £25 next day shipping inclusive of £250 insurance.) If handed over rather than shipped then please split previous shipping costs to minimise one person's expense.

(04) Big members only please.

(05) Please sign the jig with your name, user name, reg. no. and date after use. Pictures are always welcome!

(06) There is no charge for the use of the jig, Big Members have paid already. That said a donation of any size would certainly win friends and influence people! :poke2: :nunu: (Linky on the homepage.)

Right I think that just about does it, normal service will now be resumed.

Hiya Shorty, well when I built it I decided that I was not prepared to let it out of the country, or let anyone with less than a couple of hundred posts have it, just in-case we never heard from them or saw it again. However you sound like just the sort of person we like on this forum so possibly an exception should be made... If you'd like to look into how much it would cost you to ship and how long it would take then we can go from there. (At the risk of causing offense I might ask for a deposit though.)

Let me know,

No problem. This will not happen for a while so by that time i hope i have made my appearance to make myself worthy of shipping it out. Don`t even think about it now as it`s some time still before i get the engine etc. I have so much work to do before that time.

I actually thought i`d build my own bodykit. I`ve been hanging at this other board for a while and starting to learn a bit on how to do it.

Anyway, i`m glad you consider it now cause i`m sure when the time comes i will qualify:boogie:

Is paypal safe to use BTW. I thought i make an account and become a big member right away but i don`t like these kind of payments...

Sure thing shorty. Maybe I'll just bring the jig when I drive your car to Norway. (joke.) Actually what are the rules on importing? Could I sell you "my" car for say ?200, and then it be all legal in your country, but with low taxes?

Oh, yes paypal is very good!

Good luck as ever.

Hiya Matt.

Glad to hear your swap is well under way.

Rules such as they are are stated in the opening waffle of this thread. I believe that Sam still has the jig and that there is no-one waiting after him so that would put you next in line. (If you'd care to drop him a Private Message to ask when he'll be done with it then we can go from there.) Oh and you'll have to stick your hand in your pocket to the tune of a tenner to extend your membership to full status, many thanks

Have you got your mounts sorted?

It's probably only a question of time before I relent and fit a 3S-GTE in my car!

I love the Supercharged engine to bits, but I have already had to refurbish the top end (after a trackday disaster) and the bottom end after another disaster!

In the meantime a friend has asked me if I will help him do a 1.5 conversion. Of course the answer was yes!

Howdy Tom. Glad it arrived safely and thanks for the kind words. To be honest I've always felt a bit of an "outsider looking in" at other MR2 clubs, so it's nice to find a club where my style of cobbeling stuff together fits in. :hmm:

Hi Owen,

Don't panic, it hasn't gone AWOL, I've still got it! :)

I had a major hiccup in the project when basically my landlord told me to get rid of some of my cars or I go! Oh dear! So I cleared out the garage and hid Si's car out of sight.

I've managed to remove the engine and tack weld in the engine mounts in place and make the cutout. But I couldn't get the 3S-GTE engine in my garage with the car. So Si has picked it up and it is back in Manchester. I am going to go and stay for a week with him in the new year and get the 3S-GTE fitted!

Is anyone waiting for the jig?

Marksman
22-12-2006, 19:13
Hi Tom, good to hear from you.

I'm glad things are coming together for you, all be it with the odd inconvenience. No problem on the jig, no waiters at this time, but I was a little worried that you'd fallen off the planet or something

Cheer 'n' all,

Owen.

I'm heading on up to Si's tomorrow early doors and aim to finish with the jig by tomorrow evening. PM me if you need it. It costs £25 to send it by Parcelfarce.

20-01-2007, 18:09
I don't think there's anyone waiting at the moment Tom, so feel free to hang on to it for a little while. (Though if anyone is near Tom and heading my way I wouldn't mind having it back for a little bit, but I'm too tight to courier it!)

Oh and who is this Si chap? Seems a tad rude that he'd scrounge the use of our jig and not pop in to say hello at least! :rant2: Then again maybe I'm just getting grouchy in my old age :old:

All the best,

Oops! Sorry Owen, I have hardly had any internet access recently (should be sorted by tonight though).

Oh and who is this Si chap? Seems a tad rude that he'd scrounge the use of our jig and not pop in to say hello at least!

Owen please understand I bullied him into making the decision to go 1.5 route after his AGE blew up spectacularly. This is because I wanted to have a go at it but don't want to brutalise my SC. So the project is very much being led by me (i.e I'm telling him what to buy etc and helping him do it).

Also Si works 7 days a week and his home PC is bust. He runs a garden centre and hardly spends any time in the office. I'll nudge him to come and say hello. Anyways we've finally made some progress, so I'll start a new thread so you can see what where up to.

Oops, gone off topic: if no-one needs the jig I'll return it you if you want. I don't mind paying twice for delivery (I paid the delivery from Ki to me). I am just very appreciative that you you lent it to us. It really is an excellently put together piece of kit.

Marksman
28-01-2007, 13:10
No worries Tom.

Seems unfair for you to pay postage twice so don't worry about sending it back, providing of course you're happy to have it for a while longer and have the space to do so?

Certainly looking forward to the new thread.

Hello, I live in the US (kinda like the UK? 50% similar- the 'U' part, not the 'K'). I've been scoping out the MK1.5 idea ever since before I bought my MR2. Was gonna go 4AGZE for a while, but I have since learned that the smog laws in California seem to be insanely more facilitive to the 3SGTE, and the torque is almost universally better anyway. I am looking to see if I can line everything up, so I was just wondering if you'd ship to California, US. Thanks!

Hi Silverstorm, I'm afraid we don't ship that far away as the risk of it going astray is just to great, however there is a chap in the US by the name of Carl Crawford who has a jig that I believe he ships around.

Hope that helps,

Hi Tomytank
Well the first requirement is already taken care of, you're a big member

The jig is currently with me and ready for dispatch so you're at the head of the queue. The rules have changed slightly though. Any big member in need of the jig is entitled to use it free of charge still, but they have a 2 week window that they may book it for. After this time it must be returned to me or passed on to another member. Worst case is that means that someone may end up paying courier charges both ways. (Total £40-ish.) This is not how we intended to run things but in the past the jig disappeared for unreasonable periods so this is how it now has to be :hand:

If this is acceptable then please contact me by PM and I'll get it sent off to you.

Many thanks and good luck with your build,

Owen.

Stop the timer, They're welded in!
Haha, just gotta line the jig up one more time with the mounts to check the mounts havent budged about when the welds cooled. After that, I'm all done.

Well, hats off to Owen then for the jig weld, Paul for the idea, and anyone else that had a hand in (oo-er)

As it states that the jig should be used in 2 week slots, you wan tme to hold onto it for a week or so Owen, so that if anyone needs it in that time it'll save 2 courier treks? It'll be safe and soundly stashed under me bed and nowhere in the garage...

Off to get the 3s down to this new garage today, and then it wont be long till :driving:

Hello guys, Ive been considering doing this swap for awhile now and right now my main concern is the engine mounts. Was curious as to if you were willing to have this shipped to the states when the time comes. I understand you would want this ship insured and that would not be a problem for me. Again this is no hurry as i havent purchased an mk1 shell or the 3sgte yet. If shipping the jig isnt a possability could someone tell me the secrets to the job? :P

Thanks guys.

Rowdan
01-04-2008, 12:57
Hi mate, can't speak for Owen but I don't think it would be very cost effective to ship the jig to the States. Had you thought of Carl Crawford, his company Speed-source is your side of the pond and supplies the mounts and the loan of a jig to get them fitted.

Hi Owen,

thx, I don't need anything special,, just the basics, aka no fancy good-looking jig, just weld something up in 10 mins that fit, then throw it in a box with the mounts I'll be needing, and ship to Denmark.

Just to elaborate on this a little. To make a new jig I have two options:-

Option 1
Find a person who has a complete MK1.5 and ask them if I can take their engine out so I can make a new jig from their chassis.

Option 2
Find a MK1.
Remove the engine
Remove the old mounts
Pay to have my first jig shipped back to me.
Weld a set of new mounts into the chassis
Make your new jig from this car.

Neither is a 10 minute job  But if that is what it takes then that is what we'll do

Cheers,

Owen.

Paff
21-06-2008, 13:12
Owen, we do have one option, If I can get jon to use the jig and not fit his engine till you return we might be able to use his car as a base. Can't promise he can wait but will ask.

Hi.

I think you're getting your wires crossed a bit mate. This thread is for the jig for the TB 3SGTE into AW11. The jig you borrowed was the SWAT 3VZFE into AW11 but that'll be no use to you either this time around as you're using a 4V6 adaptor mount on a 1MZ. (Our jig only fits the SWAT mounts and adaptor not the 4V6.)

Sorry, not the news you were looking for I'm sure

Happy grinding,

Owen.

Paul Woods
19-09-2008, 07:05
for the 1mz install? the 3sgte jig is no use for you, neither is a 3vz jig,its got to be a 1mz specific jig or manually mounted.

supersi
19-09-2008, 10:20
Can I borrow the jig tho, as I'm putting the 3sgte into an aw11.

Cheers,

Paul Woods
20-09-2008, 09:02
Tbarturbo i have been informed you are now asking for the mk1.5 jig despite our phone call yesterday, please stop asking to borrow engine jigs that will not work with your 1mz engine,i tried explaining to you on the phone yesterday that you need to manually hang this engine or use a 1mz jig...NOTHING else will work.

You said you didn't understand why you can't hang a 1mz off a 3sgte jig... well ive got 3 different mk1 engine jigs here for a reason.Im telling you it won't work.

It's starting to get a tad tedious having to explain this over and over mate both on the phone and forum. The 3sgte engine jig is for use on 3sgte engine installs only.Any other engine type install risks damaging the jig.

TbarTurbo
20-09-2008, 09:47

Paul Woods
20-09-2008, 10:14

20-09-2008, 10:24

20-09-2008, 21:53
I'll make a comment, I did receive a phone call then phoned owen to see what the situation on the jig was, I left it at that as I have had no dealings with the jig myself.

The call from Tom was first thing in the morning, if Paul received a call from Tom after that maybe some of the confusion was down to times being muddled. I don't know as I don't know the time of the call to Paul and I just relayed a message, after that I know nothing.

OlberJ
24-09-2008, 09:12
Maybe this deserves another thread of it's own, but there is case for one jig being able to fit all methinks, purely because you can put any of the engines, tubby, 3VZ, 1MZ, 5VZ into a Mk2 shell on the original mounts (with the adapted driver's side mount a la 4V6). So if the jig replicates these Mk2 mounts in a Mk1 then the same would apply. (Idea copyright of Jiff 19Canteen)

They will be lined up slightly wrong in a Mk1, dependant on engine, either too high or too far forward etc which then means you have to move things around it, and that's why u need the specific jig.

So if we went down the 1 jig route it would mean redoing all the other current ways of doing the firewall and possibly raising the engine lid, uneven driveshaft angles, gearcable positioning, etc etc.

Hope that clears up a little of the confusion on the whys and why nots.

Pete, It may turn out to be a total rotbox so there is no rush at all, but the conversion will happen one day when I get a suitable donor so yes I am still interested. You don't know where the .dxf (I think they are) drawings for the engine mounts have gone do you, the link on the site doesn't work.

Pete,

Thanks again, I was after the .dxf that are mentioned HERE (http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?1868-The-new-engine-mount-templates&p=16579&viewfull=1#post16579) as I was going to get a local waterjet company to cut them me.

Phaeton

SpeedDevil, The intention is for when Pete has finished with it, I'm going down to pick up my engine from Patrick (Headcase) and at the same time pick up the jig. Where are you in the country as I'm sure we can sort somthing out.

Whatever happened with the original jig anyway? During the summer I was told (by the person who'd had it for a year or more) that it'd been returned to the club. Did that not happen?

pistol pete
04-02-2013, 19:57
not that i know of i hunted for it, mr woods made me a new one,
hence the need for a new thread

AlunJ

Fair enough, I'd heard from the ex-mod who had it up to last year that it'd gone back to the club, probably stuck in a storeroom somewhere.

So did a new one get made?

Phaeton
07-05-2013, 12:26
Yes, Pistol Pete had one made which I bought off him, CabbyDave currently has it as I am in the US with work, I intend to pick it back up from him on the 18th as I land back in Manchester but I'm getting no reply from Dave.

Tommy, sure, I arrive back on the 18th like I said I have to virtually go past Dave's house so hope to pick it up, he's had it a couple of months so hopefully done with it. As soon as I get back I've off on holiday for a week, then I will either be trying to start my conversion or I'm coming back out here, don't know yet. But either way I'm sure we can come to some arrangement.

Just so you are all aware, this is not the clubs jig but one that I bought off Pete, so my intention for it is it, there will be a £100 deposit required on it, the costs of the courier both ways to be covered by the requesting member, on return I will refund £75. I intend to do this on 3 occasions & being honest will keep the money myself, the next 2 occasions the 2x £25 will go to the club, it will then be put up for sale. I hope this is acceptable to all concerned.

Alan...

Bloody hell Phaeton, things have gotten a lot more expensive since the first jig. I have no problem with you recouping costs if you had a replacement made, that's only fair. Requesting that the jig is couriered from you and back every time is a bit steep considering the weight of the jig and that the jig itself can only be used by big members, which should imply a bit of trust that it will be returned after its done the rounds.

What happened to the clubs jig? I don't know the full history of the previous jig, but i assume it must have went AWOL to someone. Were they pulled up and hoiked off the club for losing it? I personally used the last one and i would think reputation-wise folk here would know i would be passing the jig on as sharpish as possible to the next person.

If that's the way it needs to be with this jig then so be it, it just feels to me as if it displays a bit of a lack of trust in the TB spirit of things... Sorry if that sounds a bit pissy, its not meant to be.

i think thats fair enough alan as its your own jig. when youve recouped your money though how about you give first dibs to the club to buy it off you as im pretty sure ours did go walkies and unfortunately. we never used to ask for a deposit which we should have done imho, but trusted it would be looked after and not go missing lol

16-07-2013, 16:08
Tommy,

Wasn't meant to be distrustful/disrespectful & if I caused offence then apologies, I just want to ensure I get it back, as to not couriering I just thought it was the easiest way, I am in Worksop, you are in Kinneff, I'm not quite sure how else it would get there?

Nik,

Yes, by all means, once I have used it then the club can have dibs,

i think what pheaton says is perfectly fine, all for the club etc. but it still costs someone money, i had it made up buy paul, which cost me a fair amount of money, got my use from it
passed it to pheaton again for a fiar amount of money (although i lost a big chuck) its worth it to pass on through the club..
so only fair he should get his money back too :)

Tommytank
16-07-2013, 22:36
No I have no issue with that at all. I mean passing it too and from Alan seems a bit overkill on the shipping. Would it not be simpler if one member ships directly to another and copies Alan on the details of who has it?

cabbydave
17-07-2013, 09:11
The jig will cost less than a tenner for a courier to deliver it which is a lot cheaper than getting another one made. Whats holding you up with the mounts Alan if its steel ive got a bit here you can have I can cut it roughly the right shape if you want and send it to you if that will speed your build up. Still not got any further with mine save fully welding the mounts and painting them.

Hey guys, I hope no one minds me asking, however I've been a member of imoc for about 6 years and have had a few project mk2 turbos and I'm really keen to get a mk1.5 project off the ground and I was just wondering about the hiring of the jig for the mounts and how hiring it works. I shan't need it straight away but I have a spare rev3 320bhp aching to be put into a mk1 when I can find a nice one. Thanks. Wayne (W88NNE)

Phaeton
30-09-2013, 01:52
Wayne,

Don't mind you asking at all, currently I own the jig which is on holiday it the upper reaches of Scotland with Tommy. At some point when I am back in the UK I will need it back to get my mounts put in my car. The cost is £100 deposit of which £75 will be refunded once it is either back with me or confirmed with the next member, plus the cost of a tracked method of getting it to you. When I sent it to Tommy I used TNT (I think) which cost just under £10. So all in all it will either cost £35 or £45 depending whether the jig comes back to me or goes to another member.

Howdy. :-)

Is the jig still available to rent/hire? After getting my oily little mitts on it for a few days in the next couple of months if possible? :-/

Phaeton
12-05-2014, 12:56
Yes it is it's currently with Tommy in deepest darkness Independance land, it may get stuck in customs as it tries to cross the border, but if you're quick we may still have a trade treaty with them until Mr Salmon stops it.

Lol. Probably easier to go by sea then. ;-)

Shall I sort with Tommy and keep you in the loop?

Phaeton
12-05-2014, 14:47
It will all depend on when exactly you need it, I'm currently trying to broker a deal to sell everything I have, which is about 98% of the conversion parts along with a solid car. If it happens I'm sure the new owner will still be happy to let it be used,

Well I was being a bit pro-active to be honest, as probably wont need it till July...

But, if there was an option to have it at any point even for a day or two I will work around anyone/everyone as needed as doing it with a jig is a darn site easier. Lol. At worst I will just get the engine hung first and finish off another time. :-)

Tommytank
15-05-2014, 08:27

Tommy, thanks for that. I'd be extremely grateful if I could get my hands on it at any point, if its only gonna be for a couple of days I'll book time off and can turn it back around in 2-3 days? No rush though, so all down to you/Alan really depending when is more convenient and suits best? Doesn't really make a big difference to me whether I do it now or in a couple of months, so no pressure either way.

Sorry guys, just to clarify i'm not here on holiday. I'm out for work and frankly i'm being fucked around something awful with it.

I've been told i'll be back within a week but i am a bit skeptical. Again, its a bit of a bugger for you, but i can assure you that as soon as i get back the jig will be in the post to you.

The jig is Phaetons so if you can ensure he knows where it is going and sort it with him, then PM me the address to ship to i'll get it sent ASAP.
