Well here goes nothing:-
I must admit that i have been slowly getting on with this project on my own doing a few odd jobs here and there mainly on the body work, but always looking out for a turbo engine, and to my joy i found on a few week's ago advertised on the internet on a friday ad mag style site. I found it by lukc more than anything else as all i did was type MR2 Turbo spares or repaires into google and after searching through loads of pages of old out of date adverts i found my donor car for sale.
Adertised as "having near side dammage but still starting and running"

http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2006/05/1.jpg

so i phoned the number and 10 munits later i had bagged myself a running MK2 Turbo for the very very small sum of,
Wait for it,
?250 round english pound :eek2:
Bargin.

The engine is now out of both the MK1 and the MK2 with just a few parts needing sorting out on the turbo engine and i'm good to go.
http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2006/05/2.jpg

The MK1 itself is in need of work but for ?255 pound i am not going to complian.

well, you got all the bits you need if you have the rear of the car, looks like just 'minor' damage to the side there.. somebody didnt like mk2's! , great prices on both to be honest. although it will still cost some on top of that naturally, you've got the cheapest combination ive seen for a while! so it shouldnt be much altogether

more shots then fella?.. front of engine and such

Well the story i was told by the seller was " he asked his 'freind' if he could take it for a drive to see what i goes like" Now im not one for crying wolf but.............. From looking at the car it looks like he lost it on a corner and went into something very lamp post shaped backwards.http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2006/04/132.jpg

Flippin eck that seems to have come together pretty quick. ?250 is a fappin bargain for the mk2!!! Sounds like its going to be sweet... Look forward to resulty :afro:

Like i said paul i'm not fully reliant on his story as there was history with the car. He had it advertised for ?400 and he said if i could take it away by the next weekend then i could have it for ?250. i didnt have to barter with him at all.

I'm not sure on using the other turbo or not on this engine. I was going to ask for advice on the pros and cons of using it

adamh
02-05-2006, 22:35
while its on the bench check it out matey, no reason why you cannot run a supra turbo on sensible boost on an old engine.. might be worth having a root around the engine, possibly putting some new kit on.. gasket/belts/pulley & jockey/bigs???.. you'll be safe that way...depends how much you trust the seller!. at a bare minimum i wouldnt look at the engine without at least a new cam belt and pulleys.

Sponge Bob
02-05-2006, 22:50
Adam - which pulley(s) is it that everyone seems to say must be replaced? I've read it so many times but they just get referred to as "the pulleys" now - so not quite sure!!

Paul Woods
03-05-2006, 06:58
which pulleys are these then ash?

Sponge Bob
03-05-2006, 09:05
Hey... that's my question!!!

I don't know which pulleys they are - I can see a few on the engine diagram marked as no.2 & no.2 idler pulley, oil pump pulley and a crankshaft timing pulley - but which ones should you change as a matter of fact with the engine out / timing belt off...?

Paul Woods
03-05-2006, 18:12
none of them unless theres play in them or they sound like a fecked skateboard wheel :)

adamh
03-05-2006, 22:54
you ride skateboards regular then paul?..

bob.. if im doing a cam belt, i do the belt pulleys if needed, (usually one or two idler's.. and a jockey pulley).. the idler's are basically statically placed pulleys (belt bearings), i'e; they dont move on the block face.. and the jockey pulley is the spring/hydraulically loaded one (bearing)that tensions the belt up (moves). as paul says, if they are allright they are allright!.
one of mine sounded like pauls mk2n/a engine and felt lumpy when turning it.. so i changed it.. 'and' also changed the jockey pulley to be sure.

ive always played like that tho bob.. i like to replace parts before hand.. so i know when push comes to shove with hammering the engine now and again, i've nowt to worry about in that particular area of it. its not a necessity.

the camshaft pulleys never get changed matey !.. they have no bearings at the front of the head.. only rubber seals , which should last donkeys years.

sorry si post unavoidably off direction a little!.

Sponge Bob
03-05-2006, 23:07
Yeah - but I like your way of thinking Adam!! I'll check how pricey the bits are before making that call mind lol

Paul Woods
04-05-2006, 06:26
i had to replace the idler on my 3s-gte...now that did sound like a skateboard wheel, just couldnt take a chance on it.....?45 from toyota!!

adamh
04-05-2006, 08:32
blimey, i used cram-skill.. they were 19 or so for jockey, i think 11 or 14 for idler.. god knows was a long time back!. 45 quid tho.. no shock there!. dare i ask how much a mrT cam belt kit inclusive of skateboard wheels is.. i reckon its over a hundred quid?

sorry again simon!..

how is the swap coming along?

mr2aw11turbo
04-05-2006, 17:33
not much done since the weekend. i'll get some more pictures up then.
Anyone got some nice clear pics of what i need to cut out of the rear firewall?

Might have a go at that on saturday

Paul Woods
04-05-2006, 18:27
theres a few pics on all of the swaps ive done, but to give you a clearer idea cut from the very middle of your engine lid catch all the way to the seam where the panel meets the drivers rear suspension turret....chop all of that out then replace with angle iron supports and weld steel back in around whatever intercooler design you have.

jobs done today befor the rain came down.

Fuel pump replaced with turbo pump. I only broke two bolts that hold the plastic bit's on, i was well impressed. standard "paint it all black" routine to the tank and anything esle i could reach at the time.

also had a strip down of my new ST205's calipers and poly bush kit that arrived this week.

Well this weekend has been a bit slow because of a couple of other jobs on other cars ( and its been raining today at times!!!!!!!! ) i was able to fit the oil pressure stitch from the 4age onto the 3sgte, alter the engine hanager to fit, and make a start on cutting up the front and rear torque mounts ready for a later date,

and when i went for my camera to take a few snapshots. what do you know the batteries are flat, ho hum these things will happen. :banghead:

adamh
04-06-2006, 19:37
never mind, i usually leave the batteries in the charger!. if its any comfort i was doing mot work on the daily driver this weekend, although much rather be stuck in on the 2.

whats the engine hanger?!.. not sure i have altered mine.. are you talking about where the oil pressure sender gets mounted on the turbo head? im just going to knock up an extension piece and mount it on the end of that.

Thats the one. Read in another thread about taking a small amount of the engine hook off to give space for the pressure sender. So while i was on a mission with the angle grinder in my hand..........

right time to do somthing engine related as it has been a while, this morning involved seperating the engine and gearbox and getting the block onto my engine stand, took a bit longer than i thought as i had to find 4 bolts long enough to reach the engine through the arms on my stand:doh: but its done now:boogie:

Great progress this morning first off, the fylwheel was put back on after a skim to take off the lovley surface rust off that was attached to it:-

http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2006/10/25.jpg

Then the new clutch was put on to the fylwheel:-

then in a mad rush i put the gearbox back on but forgot to take any pictures:doh: and within the last half an hour the bumble bee project's engine bay is now filled:-

alas no, its got to come out again at some point befor it hits the road, when i had the mounts put in the upright parts were put in goo and solid by a freind with a good sized welder, the top part that i put in with my welder has come away on the one side on the gearbox side because the metal i was welding is to thick for my smaller welder so i shall get it some where close to being finshed then drop everything back out again re-weld the mounts, then re-paint the bay again as i have put some scratches throught the paint and red is showing through again, its all part of the fun of doing a self build,

Anyway good progress has been made the ecu has been mounted in the boot,http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2006/11/33.jpg

its been all wired up apart from one power cable that i didnt have the right conector for, http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2006/11/34.jpg
and it has been conected up to a battery and amazing :eek2: it turns over :jump: :jump: :jump: :jump: :jump: :jump: :jump: :jump:

One question on the wiring i have extended these into the boot to give a bit more room in the engine bay, the wiring for one of them is there, but where would i find the other? http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2006/11/35.jpg
