Just finished my pushbutton engine cover release and fitted a new switch to my Paul Woods manual choke :shades:

Also traced out some unused wiring for cruise control that can save a lot of hassle running extra wires from the cabin to the boot and engine bay. Details are on my website here CLICKY (http://myweb.tiscali.co.uk/jimilawson/Various/cruise%20control%20wiring.html) If anyone is interested in how I did the cover release I'll try and get details of the bits I used.

Jimi thats well cool and looks factory fit as well ! as ever always amazed ! and the wiring could well come in very useful ! Now all you need to do is add a gas ram(if you havent already) and a pop soloniod and when you press the button the lid will shoot up ! really liking this mod as we relly need more switches in the MK1 as it does lack somewhat in the switches depertment !

I've already got a gas ram, but the angles are wrong to provide enough force to pop the lid up on its own, I've already been thinking along the same lines and I have a couple of idea's about it on the back burner. The switch I used for the choke is brand new came from ebay ( ?1.99) and its a perfect fit in the blank slots, I 've still got a link to the seller if anyones interested ( he has more of them )

yeah links be good jimi ! I have he gas ram on my Sc lid and I know what you mean as mine still needs levering up an inc or so and then off it flys ! I was thinking of trying to get a pop soloniod like what they use for doors where the handles have been removed and it pops them opn an inch or so ! guess in that instance it would need to pop a split second after boot release but am sure thats easy for a man of your masterful elctrical talents ! just a capacitor or something (see I know some elctrical words lol) in series (another one) or parallel (god Im on a roll now) should see it right !

What sort of lengths are the gas rams? trying to avoid paying the ?30 for the kit when we all know its a bonnet strut with some brackets

I got a gas strut from a range rover bootlid through ebay for ?7 that looks like it will do the business when I get around to figuring out how :)

Now that's a mod I wanted to do, I fabbed up this...

but sadly it lifts far too viciously to allow it to go up without a helping hand, more thought required methinks.

There's usually 2 problems with using gas rams from other cars, they are too long and too powerful. However you can buy a pair of rams from RS that are adjustable and come in different lengths, I have a link somewhere, I'll measure the length of the ram I have and post it up with the link.
I was looking at doing away with the gas ram and fitting a linear actuator to lift the engine lid, but my source for cheap adjustable length linear actuators has dried up.
