View Full Version : Can you 'repair' a rubber engine mount?

Is it possible to 'repair' an engine mount bush that is starting to crack/come away from the metal by filling it with urethane? Or is it only worth doing that with a bush that is in good condition?

Basically my rear mount is starting to crack and I guess this will eventually let the engine sag. Doing the front one wouldn't hurt either I suppose.

Don't see why not. I might even be tempted to cut out all but a couple of slivers of the old rubber, leaving enough to hold the bits in place and refill aroud that.

Good luck,

Owen.

one pack just about does both torque mounts, but dont waste any! i lay mine on their side, duck taped the bottom and poured it in to set,job done.

Would it be wise to do this to mounts anyway prior to swapping Paul?

the americans like to do this a lot ive noticed...its not really needed to be honest, all depends on the condition of your mk2 mounts really...if in any doubt poly fill them.

For ?8 I guess it's worth it - no negatives from doing it to already good enough mounts though are there...

I mean if you fill, then the old mounts perish leaving a big gap in the middle etc that's not going to cause probs later...

Because I need to pay the guy, it won't drive on to the trailer, and there's an engine on a pallatte required too... if he'd cater for this then i'll give him a call tomorrow!!

The stock rubber is an absolute bugger to cut out, it's just the wrong rubberiness to cut with a stanley knife. I used the front aw11 torque mount, chopped/burnt out the rubber (burning is much easier but v messy) and filled it full of urethane.

I just filled my torque mounts with Sikaflex Urethane. I can't remember the number but obviously it's one of the black urethanes.

It works really well and is really easy with no chance of it spilling and getting away on you since you use a calking gun to pump it into the mount.
