View Full Version : Battery Relocation / Tank drop

Jiff Lemon

Gonna do the tank drop to uprate fuel pump and relocate battery.

Do we run the battery cable over the top of the tank or underneath it?

Any general pointers? Will take lots of pics so we can have a how to article at the end of it.

I've just dropped the tank for painting and fuel pump change and I'll probably follow the brake lines when I run a cable.

Be sure to remove all bits of trim inside before you start. Its not easy to get to some of those centre console screws when the car is in the air

i've run my cable through the interior of the car under the center console

yep, through the interior..plenty of holes in the bulkhead and big one on rear firewall..

Well, worked my way through dropping the tank - Yup, not a nice job is it?

You know what makes it worse though? Discovering your supra turbo pump ain't gonna work :(

Spoke to Paul a while ago asking why he didn't use the Cmry V6 pump as it looks identical to the turbo pump I'd bought - NOW I know why! my turbo pump aint! Not all supra pumps are created equal it appears

Ebay ad: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=10428&item=4623399731

And heres the pumps:

http://www.zen38410.zen.co.uk/MR2/Swap/Pumps.JPG

Now admittedly I can't REALLY moan at payin ?10 for the pump, but now I'm kinda fooked. Put the tank back in and have the ball ache of doing it all again? Buy brand new pump and do it properly? try and bodge the v6 pump in?

Think I'll be sulking and having an alcohol fest tonight as todays been a bit of wasted day!

What's wrong with it?

Jiff Lemon

MR2 pump on the right - Has bolt on fixings
Turbo pump on left - Has a plug in fittings, different pick up sock (can't be swapped over either, as its different to the 2 pump).

trying to google for flow rates of pumps but not making much progress.

Oh right. Its no problem whatsoever, just get a plug, or if you can't find the right one then find some spade terminals the right size, then solder stuff together. The sock thing doesn't make any difference either, if it sucks up fuel in a supra it'll suck up fuel in your MR2. I've put my supra pump in, just take the rubber thingy out of the bottom of the bracket, attach the feed pipe and then attach the pump to the frame with a jubilee clip.

Jiff Lemon
14-04-2006, 19:20
Yeah, I may have to bodge it in - will use the V6 pump if I have to; interestingly enough the V6 pump looks to have a resistor added in line with the +ive feed. Soldering up the wiring is no problem; I'm just a little paranoid about having the lot submerged in fuel! Anyone know if heat shrink is fuel resistant?

Paul Woods

i wouldnt worry jiff it was submerged in fuel on the camry.

V6 pump bodged into place - Car still runs! :)

Has to be said this is a bloody AWFUL job!

17-04-2006, 00:11
how did i set that up? yes i bought it and put it in the cupboard. that help?lol lol from what i gather its fairly easy to sort . comes with brackets and unions .was going to fit after the filter in the engine bay, rated to 350bhp apparently.

Peebs, I'd forget about the inline pump and buy Jiff's supra pump off him if he isn't using it - I've seen these pumps supplying enough fuel for over 600 bhp so they are well specced.

superchargedsam
17-04-2006, 00:28
have a supra pump for my rev 3 setup as they must be damned good as they easily flow enough fuel for the BPU which is circa 400bhp with ease and like Dan says will flow much higher ! Picked mine up for peanuts off of MKIV.net as they are always binning them for walbros so easily obtainable for low deneros !

djdna2000
17-04-2006, 00:33
Interestingly the supra TT pump outflows the Walbro 255 unit under certain conditions (higher rail pressure), I saw a comparison chart somewhere once but god knows where exactly.

17-04-2006, 00:35
Dan thats why I can never see the reason they all seem to upgrade them on supranet but hey ho its thier moeny and our gain !

So how 'bout it Jiffy, you up for sellin that supra pump to me? Have PMed you also.

Right...so I just have to add the Camry plug onto the Mk1 loom and it all fits together with minimal fuss?

OlberJ
11-09-2007, 21:22
Yeah, it's just the taking the tank out that's a fuss.

Jim-SR
11-09-2007, 21:53
how hard is the tank removal? what do you actually have to remove? i was hoping there might be lots of pics of the tank removal itself lol, as its something im considering doing myself

any chance of some pics of the tank as well? ive never seen an MR2 one, i dont even know where it is within the chassis, as i know roughly where on the car it is, but ive never seen it!!

Jiff Lemon
11-09-2007, 21:56
Almost; Pull the fuel pump out of the camry (easier job ever!)

join the pump to the MK1 tank frame and join the wires

jim i will do a step by step pictorial next time i do one of you like? taking pics under the lifts let you see everything

Paul, we know where you are and one day the SW Posse will come steal your lifts :)

Hell yes, especially as you have two of the damn things

:master: I think you missed a trick though by putting them side by side. If you put them one behind the other then then the combined power of the two lifting together might be enough to raise Johnny's TRD off the ground long enough to put the V6 in...

Jim-SR

step by step guide would be awesome paul! dont worry about going into every little detail, Haynes manual style. but some pictures of the major steps in the removal would be very helpful

not sure i need to ever remove mine, but im tempted to at some point to give it a good clean out and assess the pick up points, etc. once i know where it actually sits i might be able to see about sticking an aftermarket tank in there as well

Aaaaaaaarrrrrrrrgh!!!!!

Can't get the tank out, have undone all the gear and handbrake cables and mounts, unplugged the pump and the sender, pushed them through the hole, ondone the 2 straps, removed all i can at the rear and it's still in there solid. Have i missed sum bolts?

Can anyone help me out here?

Murf will sort it 2moro tho hopefully.

woah, the tank is tiny!! didnt realise it was tucked up under the phantom transmission tunnel, il keep that in mind when im welding right next to it in the near future and drilling holes lol

not sure how a replacement tank could be put in there, the tank is plastic right?

MartG
21-09-2007, 20:06

Nope, steel

interesting. i might still be able to work with the standard tank yet then!

what you thinking Jim? Modify the tank so it's smaller? More baffles? Fill it with open-cell foam?

Jim-SR

what you thinking Jim? Modify the tank so it's smaller? More baffles? Fill it with open-cell foam?

i want to stick an integrated swirl pot into it. might fill it with foam as well but im not sure if it will be necessary. having a swirl pot submerged should be enough. there would always be a couple of litres of fuel on supply then until it runs empty. can run the tank reliably down to the last litre, no fuel starvation and surge in fast corners, etc. want to be able to empty the tank with a switched pump as well so i can know exactly how much fuel ive got in there.

probably a bit overkill for a track car, but sod it, might as well do it properly lol

Inside the tank the pump sits in a kind of bowl, fed by a pipe from the front of the tank I think.

Jim-SR

awesome work, the video was great, i know exactly what the tank looks like now :D

that bowl is more of a collector bowl than a swirlpot, it would certainly help to keep a constant feed to the pump though. i still think there would be benefit from an internal swirl pot though, so i think i might do it anyways. with the tank being metal it makes it really easy to weld in extra bits

TBH that video is much better than one I got to watch on the weekend, you ought to copyright it mate :)
