First important step - Make sure engine is is a known runner

right click, save as :) http://www.zen38410.zen.co.uk/MR2/Swap/DSCF0421.AVI

Then its bonnet off and begin:

http://www.zen38410.zen.co.uk/MR2/Swap/letsbegin.JPG

Very daunting at first - You couldn't get a cat in that engine bay, let alone swing one! However, you soon get into the swing of things - Rad's out, airboxes removed, and spaces start to appear!

http://www.zen38410.zen.co.uk/MR2/Swap/progress.JPG

Finally, hack the front end out and your ready for the crane (which doesn't arrive till next week <:( )

http://www.zen38410.zen.co.uk/MR2/Swap/ready.JPG

So, what of this mystical COR that most swappers speak of? Remove the glovebox and you'll see both COR and the ECU.

http://www.zen38410.zen.co.uk/MR2/Swap/CorEcu.JPG

So why do we have to hack the dash out to get to it? Cos some clever sod at toyota screwed it in from the top!

And Mr.Woods advises getting as much wire as possible - Hope this is enough boss:

Hopefully by friday I'll have both a crane and an engine stand, so more pics will follow.

Edit: Edited to add extra pic:

More pics on finalising the job!

Rule no1: Always have the right equipment for the job: Tools, Fire extinguisher, engine crane, Big Scary Mate who's very good with a grinder.
http://www.zen38410.zen.co.uk/MR2/Swap/essential.JPG

Then mid lift, realise it won't clear battery tray, so hack that off and have BSM shake engine to see where the heck it getting stuck
http://www.zen38410.zen.co.uk/MR2/Swap/nearly.JPG

watch for the power steering pipe which is bizarrely connected into the inlet manifold (something to do with the speed sensitive steering I guess) and soon, the lump is out! Doesn't it look big? (and the engine and box is a fair size too!)
http://www.zen38410.zen.co.uk/MR2/Swap/lump.JPG

Then remove the gearbox, dowpipes, silly intake manifold
http://www.zen38410.zen.co.uk/MR2/Swap/manifold.JPG

the engine wiring loom
http://www.zen38410.zen.co.uk/MR2/Swap/loom.JPG

And it looks a little better!
http://www.zen38410.zen.co.uk/MR2/Swap/bare.JPG

Then plop onto engine stand for more strippage!

While on that train of thought.... In my minds eye, I can see a blending of the X Pack and Mk1 kinda working. Square lines, wide arch. Anyone see where I'm coming from?

Paul Woods
11-05-2006, 17:10
yeah i can see that working,as long as nobody said afterwards "theres a mk1 with an escort x pack on it" :) im sure it could be made to look right.
