and the knackered engine removed today 3 and a half hours later
http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2006/04/36.jpg

no going back now.

ok how do you remove the drive shafts?

Paul Woods
08-04-2006, 17:33
3.5 hours, good going....right ,take the wheel off, remove split pin, crack hub nut with h/brake on and bash the shaft through with a hammer.

welly_59
08-04-2006, 17:33
undo the big nut in the hub and bang em with a big mallet! might be useful to put a piece of wood over the spline and then hit the wood to save damaging them!

cheers guys i'll do it tomorrow. theres an alarm fitted to the car that doesnt work. ive got a feeling im gonna have problems with this later. as it may immobilise my car now ive removed it, hope not anyway, i think i'll have enough problems without that.

Paul Woods
08-04-2006, 18:24
dont worry about that mart,i used to remove immobilisers at the roadside in minutes when i worked for green flag so i know them all pretty well...i'll be able to help with that.

work done over the last few days
here ive cut out the bulkhead, put and old boot seal around the removed part and an old door trim around the hole.
im going to add a clip on each corner to hold it tight against the seal.
i need to drill the holes for the ic pipes at a later date.

http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2006/04/59.jpg

ive removed all the gubbins from the engine, cleaned it up with degreaser and painted it in engine laquer.
im not copying you paul "honest" :liar:

i also need a new cam cover :poke2:

Hey, good stuff Mart, the engine colours aren't my cup of tea, but the finish you have there if tip top. Whatever floats your boat, baby.

any reason why the filter lines are so long..you relocating it onto the dashboard..? j/k

mart1975
12-04-2006, 21:34
lol it came like that. wasnt me! what is the point of this kit anyway? does it work as an oil cooler?

Peebs
12-04-2006, 21:41
It's purpose is mearly to relocate the oil filter itself, Mart. Either for easier future access or clearance issues. I believe Goldy may have been looking for one of these, I could be mistaken with who it was though.

mart1975
12-04-2006, 21:50
its ok ill just cut it down (a lot) i asked my mate today why the pipe from the turbo is painted in lifeboat orange? is it just because its an import or did the previous owner have wierd taste?

mart1975
13-04-2006, 17:04
cut out my engine mounts today using 5mm steel, nightmare to cut, went through 5 cutting discs. fit nicely though. oh i also cut 2 sets by mistake so if anybody wants a set you are welcome to collect them.

http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2006/04/70.jpg

got 2 sheets of 5mm steel left if anybody wants to collect them

Yes it was me looking for one of these..... I'll hapilly take it off your hands mart if you don't want it :shades:

By the way, lifeboat orange paint on any of the engine bay pipes signifies that the owner may have had some sort of strange fettish

adamh
14-04-2006, 16:07
hmm. odd relocating the oil filter?.. what turbo and stuff came with it??

mart1975
14-04-2006, 19:31
think i'll keep hold of it goldy, :snooty:
the rest of the engine seems standard. the usual turbo aswell.
gonna put the engine back together tomorrow though i cant remember how :icon_eek: :eh:
anyone got any close up pics of the engine

Paul Woods
15-04-2006, 08:15
theres an annotated diagram of the 3s around here somewhere,i think its in the tech section.Failing that most of us know where everything goes so if you get stuck just ask,i could pretty much put one of these together with eyes shut now but there are a lot of pipes/wires,best to ask if you have an odd looking pipe and nowhere for it to go!

I thought the last 3 letters of the plate being LAG was quite appropriate seeing as you're putting a tubby in her.

looks spot on. hey mart i see you have blue g, just like mine, hows the bodywork?

mart1975
25-04-2006, 23:25
its the most rusty 2 ive had. holes everywhere, in fact i was welding today near the fuel cap under the arch and i set the plastic bonnet release alight.
no matter how hard i blew on it it wouldnt go out and of course it was behind the panel so i could not reach it. was very worried to say the least.

adamh
26-04-2006, 00:06
scary! i set something alight welding exhaust brackets on.. not sure what it, maybe paint smoking above, was but i was huffin away above the chasis rail!
yes, plenty of patches on mine too

http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2006/05/36.jpg

got the clips fixed on, shouldnt be any crap coming through from the engine, its tighter than a submarine.

my fuel pump, decat pipe, and cam belt cover arrived and i got my sheet of alloy today for the firewall for ?10.

ive also got a celica radiator to replace the mk1 rad, hope it fits

and a pair of 280mm rear discs for ?5, though they are rusty and a bit worn, someone could machine it flat again.what should i expect to pay to get them done?

welly_59
04-05-2006, 23:02
mart will the engine fit with that panel in place? in my car the 3sgte protrudea a few cm into the boot itself

Paul Woods
05-05-2006, 06:38
it will fit without mods to the wall at all but it places the engine about 20mm further forward and chucks the turbo up against the front firewall.

Love the hatch mart! have you moved it back a tad or is it just in the stock location? you may have to move it back a little if you want more clearance at the front....nice work though, thats a new way of doing it,i like new. :)

pic size :rozzer:

mart1975
05-05-2006, 09:46
those damn pic police lol yes its the same bit i cut out. its created 3/4" in the engine bay. if its too little i'll adjust it.
will find out next week as the engine gets marked up for its mounts.

adamh
05-05-2006, 20:58
nice work mart, love the clips. i wouldnt pay more than 15 a disc for a skim. believe me tho, you'll stop very well on a freshly dressed rotor.

mart1975
13-05-2006, 17:48
got the engine in today (and out again) for the mount marking

now the cv joints, which of the rings do i remove and which do i leave on there as i noticed they catch on the hub?
http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2006/05/115.jpg

Paul Woods
13-05-2006, 17:56
remove that silver one in the middle mate, they just knock off.

mart1975
13-05-2006, 18:01
thanks paul, oh and i have a ballbearing missing. does anyone have a spare please

Paul Woods
13-05-2006, 18:04
owen sent me 4 from a camry cos i was missing some,he may have one or two left over...so it broadens the search knowing you can use a v6 ball if you get stuck looking for a turbo one.

adamh
13-05-2006, 20:27
good job. you want to remove the clip holding the gator, slide gator back, knock off cv from shaft. hard works done!.. get them mounts seamed up, engine back in for good.did you use the tb mount jig? seeing as you havent done the cv's yet.. i guess your gong t put them on and get them equal before welding ?

mart1975
13-05-2006, 20:34
no ive got the drivetrain done, had a nightmare fitting the drive shaft. ive marked for the mounts and removed the engine ready to weld the mounts in place.
ok the new clips for the cvjoints, how do you tighten these? ive cliped them together by hand but they are fairly loose, is their a spacial tool for fitting these that pulls them tightly together?

adamh
14-05-2006, 14:27
^ put a pair of pliers over the top of the square piece that sticks out and squish effin hard.

theres me thinking you just welded the mounts wihtout making sure the shafts are equal (doh).

mart1975
14-05-2006, 17:53
ok, well they are equalish, the mounts are welded in place tomorrow, had to get them done by a proper welder as my welder is cack, i think it was designed for welding drink cans together as thats all its good for, certainly not engine mounts.
thanks i'll do that with the cv boots.

adamh
14-05-2006, 18:26
^ squish till your knuckles are white !.. once running, just check them regular like you would any other piece of the wheel assembly in case they come loose and slip off and let all the grease out. useless things them clips, much prefer jubilees, but you cant get them on without fouling the hub if i remember.

mart1975
14-05-2006, 18:45
they certainly appear a bit crappy. i'll probably stick some jubilee clips on there actually. cheers

mart1975
16-05-2006, 20:34
had a good day today, all seemed to go pretty well, changed the fuel pump, fitted the firewall which was a total nightmare to do, 2mm alloy is not good to work with, id recommend 1.6mm.
got the engine bolted in place, theres certainly not a lot of room with the brackets in place. also for any future swappers the drivers side engine mount hanger has to go in before the engine as it will not fit afterwards as i found out today when i had to remove the engine again.
kept thinking today id missed a vital part that i cannot do with the engine in place, i really hope not though i will find out soon enough.
anyway thats the grafting done, on with the wiring!!!

16-05-2006, 20:50
excellent work mart, the only thing thats a bugger with the engine is in is the fuel pump and fuel tank piping, you got that one covered and assuming the piping is all connected back, your laughing..theres isnt anything else with the engne in

mart1975
16-05-2006, 21:38
yes mate all done, ive cut holes for the cooling pipes though ive noticed the fuel pipe that connects to the fuel rail is very short and will not reach. have you noticed this?

for swappers info i couldnt get hold of an engine trolley so as in the pic on the page i used an oiled metal sheet to slide the engine on, you could use plywood etc also.

Hey well done Mart looks the dogs.

Wish my tubby engine was that clean....

Looks like my hoist is a star (pictures and all) :)

Good Luck finishing, any builder knows the devil is in the detail.

Good progress Mart, nice work on the boot firewall.

BTW, after looking at your CV pics that you PM'ed me about...I DO have some after all, DOH! Thought you wanted the mk1 stylee ones not camry or mk2, silly me, if you're still stuck without, PM me your addy and I'll get a couple sent off to ya.

Paul Woods
17-05-2006, 06:23
looking good mart! the mk1 fuel feed pipe wont reach to the mk2 rail, you need to use the mk2T pipe and attach that to the top of the fuel filter,or join pipes.

mart1975
17-05-2006, 08:51

yes thanks for that mate, would have been a total nightmare without the hoist. i'll have to take a few pics of your engine bay in a few days if thats ok, so i know where everything goes.

paul what sort of connector do i need to join the fuel pipe? i,ll try and get hold of a turbo pipe from mr2 breakers.

Ja99a
17-05-2006, 09:03
Sure No problems

Paul Woods
17-05-2006, 17:59
just a steel 6mm tube mate,a couple of petrol pipe clips, not water pipe jubilees i hasnt to add! stick the metal pipe into each rubber hose and secure with clips, make sure they are tight, double clip it if you want.Ideally you need to get the mk2T feed pipe though.

mart1975
17-05-2006, 18:49
ive just found one paul. does the turbo pipe have a banjo type connector on each end? if so it looks like the guy has thrown one in

Paul Woods
17-05-2006, 19:00
it does indeed mart, thats the one.

Finally managed to muster up the strength to get out of the house today and sort you those bearings Mart. Measured them with vernier, was 22mm. I'll get them sent off to you on Monday when t'post office is open.

I was going to do it this morning, but got stuck getting off the trading estate as a BIG eff off crane was busy sticking a freshly made narrowboat in the cut and doing its best to stop everyone from going home early. "BASTARDS!"

mart1975
20-05-2006, 17:43
