Yes the big day came today! - The turning of the key...

...and yes Tony and myself breathed life into the heart of the beast.

It sounds awesome. So much so I have written a song in me 'ed while typin the post, so here goes

(Craig David mode ON) <Music Plays>

Got a flywheel on Monday,
Took the lump out on Tuesday,
Got some bolts on Wednesday,
Refitted engine on Thursday,
Fired it up and wet myself,
coz it just,
sounded, the bollox-ay.

(Cwaig Dafft'ed mode OFF) <Music Stops>

Week starting 3/4/2006
Monday - Finally, after what seems like an age, got a flywheel which Tony's bro knocked up on 'is mates lathe. Ordered sum new bolts from Mr T.

Tuesday - Dropped the lump (fitted for electrical/mounting purposes) Changed oil filter and alt belt (cam belt was done weeks ago)

Wednesday - Bolts arrived (Toyota Part No. 90105 10207. Cut 10mm off 'em and bolted up new fly (its a 14lb steel one btw) Refitted powerplant.

Thursday - Connected all the gubbins, put my baby gently back to earth (shes been 4 feet in the air for over a month (looked well low, but not due to excess weight of new manglewurzle). Poured in some nice new liquids. FYI I used Mobil 1 0W40 for the blood transfusion. Then came the big moment.

(more music starts - although even sexier stuff this time)
I turned the key, there was a click...and nothin' else happened! ARGH!
Sokay, a jumper wire we had connected temporarily (read hastily) had come off the auto trans sensor (prevents starting in DRIVE) reconnected and BOOM!
THE BEAST ROARED into life. and WOW what a sound. Well worth the wait for that gottam flywheel.

The engine sounds lovely. No knocks, no pings, no squeaks, no hisses, no rattles - nothing (Thanks Marksman - that engine is so sweet) 165k miles has not even touched this mofo. Sounds like a brand new one IMO. Drove the car a few feet forwards and backwards to check clutch and tranny ok, which it is, but although she's up and running I still have a few jobs left to do (like puttin the panels and stuff back on) before she is roadworthy.

So there we have it, mission complete - MR2 SW20 V6 conversion No.3 !

WOOOOT!

Have taken vid will post up on putfile real soon. Will let ya know how she :driving:'s just as soon as I can.

Ta Ta For Now.

Awsome Mr. Peebs.

I'm very happy for you. Thanks also for the kind words, truth be known I was very nervous selling those engines; second hand is always a risk and even though I'd heard it run and sound sweet I've been dreading the mail that says you've found something wrong... Your MK2 is your pride and joy (however missguided that may be) so I'm really pleased you've done such a good job and are happy with the result.

BTW I want to see this beastie some day so if you ever bring it anywhere near my neck of the woods then please let me know. (I promise to wipe off my own dribble.)

Good luck and give it some Welly from me,

Owen.

Sure Owen, I shall come see you sometime in the summer and yes I couldn't be happier.

Cool, we'll have a MK1 with a MK2's engine, a MK2 with a Camry engine, now all we need is a Camry with a 4age - anyone?

Well done mate.

You will be on cloud nine for days.

Congratts!!! Does it sound like a Ferrari on crack like my 1mzfe??
Its even smoother when you drive it, redline sneeks up fast.

Peebs
06-04-2006, 22:11
Ahh, yes piccies and vid soon, cheers Owen.

Jiffy, the flywheel is a one off custom jobbie made by Tony's brother - Steve - from a steel blank , basically he copied a MK2 SW20, but to fit a camry engine boss. Marksman and Mrs Owen might remember him from when we picked up the engines.

And yes the sound is certainly one of a kind too, I just can't describe it it's mental. Can't wait to see what 0-60 times I can get with Tony's accelerometer. Standard engine was 8 sec average with 3 runs.

Paul Woods
07-04-2006, 06:03
well done peebs! excellent stuff...a q though? the engine wouldnt start unless you jumped the auto trans switch? i didnt have to do that?

Will steve make flywheels for cash for anyone else mate?

Lets have some pics of the beasty!

nik
07-04-2006, 07:40
oh yes...nice..congrats mate..love to hear it, not enough v6 media around..

Peebs
07-04-2006, 20:45
Paul, I am not sure what it was thant needed jumping tbh, Tony is the man to ask but it's sorted now, have driven it today and its awsome. Scary power delivery. The whole car just seems to lift up as if its gonna take off, eff knows what it wud be like with a turbo on it. ;P

Tony is going to sort out a vid on putfille sometime over the weekend I belive.

As regards the flywheel, Steve doesnt really have a lot of time atm, twas a biggo favour on his part. We had to get the use of machinery too, which we can't get 100% of the time. But we have another possible solution, if it works out ok, I'll let you know.

Nik, I have a plan for making a nice few soundfiles shortly m8, just need time to do it.

Paul Woods
08-04-2006, 07:55
good stuff peebs, our problem is finding flywheels for the v6 conversion so if anyone cracks a source for those it would be excellent....lets see that vid!

I'll be building my mk2 v6 in a few weeks time, ive all the parts so not expecting it to take more than a week start to finish, you bringing it to JAE peebs?

Welcome to the club mate and well done. The first time you hear the car fire up all the hairs on the back of me neck stood up. Tis a great sound and one you will never forget.

Wow, Peebs.

Argh, not a fan of V6's or MK2's but video like that goes a long way to show me how blinkered I am, well done those boys.

How long go you think it'll be before it's all buttoned up and finished? Or is this to be a test bed that's always being developed a little further?

Can't wait to see it in the flesh.

Cheers and have fun,

Owen.

Peebs
08-04-2006, 20:56
Thanks guys,

Well, I could finish it off in say a week or maybe less, but I am already making a new list.

Fab up a st/st exhaust (present one is for testing only)
Poly bush kit all round
New sussy struts
Flow meter/ignition mod
it goes on :)

And, seeing as I have finally resurected my old free webspace, heres a couple more piccies for ya. (Forgot to take one of the damn fwheel before fitted argh!) Probly comin out again tho lol.

fantastic vid peebs, amazing sound from those v6's,you are using the mk2NA box and shafts yes?

Peebs
09-04-2006, 08:37
Yes I am using standard Mk2 NA box and shafts - for now. Although I am looking for a tubby LSD box, but not because I think it is stronger, just the LSD I am interested in. Hopefully gonna get sum real nice soundbites today.

Paul Woods
09-04-2006, 08:39
yeah i wasnt implying it wont be up to the job,far from it,i intend to do a few v6 swaps using the NA running gear too...what clutch did you use mate? turbo?

Paff
09-04-2006, 09:47
defintly sounds good there fella, congrats.

Hi mate did you change the fuel pump? The n/a fuel pump isn't up to the job.

Paul Woods
09-04-2006, 10:18
well im wondering if any of the turbo gear is really necessary? i was talking to a mate and we both reckon the NA box/clutch should be fine

MRV6
09-04-2006, 10:24
well im wondering if any of the turbo gear is really necessary? i was talking to a mate and we both reckon the NA box/clutch should be fine

Steady on son mate??? You mean someone you know.

Thats interesting though running an n/a gearbox it will bring the price of the conversion down considerably. What are the n/a gearboxes rated to??

Paul Woods
09-04-2006, 10:55
lol it wasnt you i was referring to mate, ive had a chat with a fellow techy on the subject of using the NA box, thoughts are that 220bhp should be safe on the NA box, maybe more.

Peebs
09-04-2006, 17:40
Well this morning we did some intesive, ahem, extensive test runs and the standard NA clutch seems to be holding the power just fine.
It was pissing it down of rain and sleet and hail and snow, oh yeah we had the lot, so first accelerometer test was aborted.
Tony is busy editing a new vid as we speak, but seeing as I am here, have a listen to these...

Hey peebs you know this thread says the 3rd mk2 v6? im pretty sure yours is the 2nd unless ive forgotten someone?

Peebs
09-04-2006, 19:10
Hmm, Dunno Paul, I thought someone else had beaten me to it. Is it MRV6 and JB ?

The NA clutch seem to be holding the power nicely so thats a bonus was only a blueprint OEM one too :)

Yes MRV6 it is currently running on NA FP but that will change before she is on the road.

Anyways, you lot were screamin for V6 media, so heres another quick vid we knocked up.

holy fuckola..just heard the sound bytes..OMG..

Peebs
10-04-2006, 19:48
lol, you should hear it first hand, sounds mental when booted. When I get chance on a dry day I'll try to get the true sound it makes from drivers point of view. It sounds very much like a supra that has been breathed on. I have binned all the emissions shit and fitted a K&N cone down low by the side vent, exhaust is better flowing than standard too. At tickover it's as quiet as a mouse, boot it and the induction roar makes it feel like a drag car. Anyways time to go change me pants - again!

Project is going fine, need to sort a brake upgrade and paintwork, plus a few other minor stuff.

Jiff, the engine runs fine without the EGR m8, RIP IT OUT! Fookin crap idea whackin exhaust gasses into the intake of all places. It was one of the first things me and Tone did with our engines. It's all lower emissions cack m8.

Made My own engine lid lifter from cutting down and re-threading a boot lifter from a (dare I mention it) Rover 214. Those brackets were made froma length of 50x50 mild steel angle iron. <That bit should be pleasing to Owen at least :)

thats a very nice motor  :praise2: retaining stock peebs or have some crazy plans?

Thanks for the kind words guys. The original plan was to have a sleeper, but how can you turn a TRD zorst opprtunity down if it is going for 100 quid ? It sounds a fair amount louder than I had anticipated but bloody nice all the same.

Apart from the 3" tailpipes, wheels and the ally grille the rest will remain standard, I just can't see the point of whacking a huge rear fin on it or painting it burberry.

To me, it looks, sounds and goes the dogs as it is. Athough I am going to have to get more power out of it in the not too distant future as I will probalby get bored with the accelleration rate (I am an accelleration freak not top speed) SC is the current favorite, but if I get a windfall in the corn detail I may go twin turbo. Not looking foward to lag and extra hassle to fit TT'os though.

Sponge Bob

Twin turbo's sounds about right though... hehe

Superchargers get my thumbs up mate... Tho since we've already got a v6 supercharger you should probably go for the twin turbo option for a bit of variety  If you decide to go supercharged, gimme a shout and i'll post my book up to you :)
