View Full Version : New Mk2 roof spoiler in production

Paul Woods
06-04-2016, 18:36
Hi chaps, I've always thought the mk2 needs something on the roof just above the rear window, the Mk1 has a perspex spoiler in this area.

Looking around the Internet I found very little to improve the styling in this area, so I have designed and made the first prototype that will be finished by the end of the week.

No pics just yet, but it looks awesome and features a high level brake light and really adds to the roof shape.

I will be having this proto molded to add to my catalogue of products.

Making a mk2 look more like a Mk1?

Look forward to seeing this though can't quite visualise the mk1 spoiler on a mk2

Paul Woods
07-04-2016, 07:53
It's not actually a Mk1 spoiler on a mk2, I was just making the point a Mk1 has something in that area and a mk2 doesn't.

My design looks nothing like a Mk1 spoiler but does look very OEM indeed, in fact when I look at a stocker now it looks bare!

Pics coming soon.

Coming tomorrow sir, then everyone will want one, but you can't have one, you can't have one ever.

The final master Mold version went into paint today so I will have finished product fitted pics tomorrow, might take a while to get the molds done though.

Some teaser pics, bear in mind this is not quite the finished product, there is still final prep to do before molding stage.

It will come with a clear LED brake light and a shorter bonnet stay (the spoiler restricts lid opening by about 2" which isn't a problem)

Final pricing details etc and lead times will follow when I progress a little further.

Paul Woods
08-04-2016, 12:34
Yep, it's really odd, we've been looking at the Mk2 for years without this and now it looks empty in that area..... I think it's a winner.

This is officially called the Woodsport Kuki blade if anyone asks.

Paul Woods
08-04-2016, 17:34
Thanks for the feedback chaps, I've been asked how it affects engine lid opening and gas ram kits, on my car which has a turbo lid (less opening) you can see there is still plenty of room to work.

Can I be a critic and say it looks good but the lines on in just don't look quite right in those pics.

Paul Woods

It follows the natural roof curve exactly but I always welcome criticism.

I have to say that looks better than anything I had imagined, though that means the bar was quite low. I think that's bob on, subtle yet adds something to that area. I think that spoiler with the bomex ironing board boot spoiler could look awesome

Thanks Goldy, feedback so far has been very positive, I'm very happy with how it has turned out.

Nobody is making anything anymore for these cars so it's important to keep stuff rolling out that's high quality and desireable.

More pics coming next week with some distance shots etc.

I forgot to add the blade will come with a blanking plate for those that don't want the high level brake light, that will also make it significantly cheaper.

racerADS
09-04-2016, 10:19
That line is spot on Paul I mean the rear curve. It is a brilliant thing though.

Paul Woods
09-04-2016, 10:23
Oh you mean the fact it's now convex as opposed to concave on the outer edge where the brake light is?

I thought about that and decided it would match the rear wing convex shape better...... styling is all in the eye of the beholder though, tricky to get right for everyone.

You are a twat!

MRV6
09-04-2016, 10:59
I had a look at this yesterday and I like it. As Paula says, when you look at a standard mk2. It just looks like they forgot about that part when they were designing it. I thought about the concave/convex look but it's either gonna line up with the curve from the cockpit or follow the lines of the rear wing. I suppose it's down to personal preference. Looking forward to seeing it with the new led brake light in.

Hawk
09-04-2016, 15:22
That's one good looking spoiler. I Like it a lot!

Was wondering how this affects the rear view mirror, though.

Paul Woods
09-04-2016, 15:38
It cuts off the top 2 inches of view, so you basically don't get to see the sky anymore..... like that choir boy chained in my loft.

inglismark

Paul Woods
10-04-2016, 09:49
A comment made on a US forum about it, something i hadn't really considered as the blade was made from a pure styling perspective....

" I'd be willing to bet that rear drag is reduced a bit with this blade installed, and since it's at the very top of the car this should slightly reduce lift AND get cleaner air to the rear wing, increasing it's effectiveness."

Thoughts?

I'd like to see a wind tunnel model to see the way the negative pressure area above the engine lid is affected. Obviously the more air getting pulled up through the engine bay and out the better.

Looks like the Mini Countryman cooper sport spoiler, I know what your on about seeing a mk2 without your new edition it looks rather bare.
If I had a mk2 (maybe one day as a run around beater) I would be buying one as it looks rather spiffing.

Paul Woods
11-04-2016, 18:13
Thankyou kindly.

So i was asked for some distance shots from different angles so here is the blade fitted to Anths Mk2, we love the way it totally transforms the rear window shape and continues the roof line further back, from a distance it looks seamless and almost as if it has had a roof chop compared to stock.

Really looking forward to seeing this in another colour other than black!

We both stood and looked at it and thought it makes the rear look really stealthy, we know we must have the styling on this one pretty good because the second you take the blade off the car doesn't look as good, in our opinion of course!

This is the high level brake light i plan on using, it's an expensive item but quality is second to none.

http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2016/04/98.jpg

Things will go quiet for a short while now until i have some definite figures and timescales, but there is definitely enough interest in this to get a large group buy going.

How does it attach to the car Paul?

Paul Woods
11-04-2016, 18:24
With hopes and dreams :)

Currently we are using 3M tape, which gets a rock solid grip of it in the short term for these shots, but i think Tigerseal/bonding is the way to go, i hate the idea of drilling and screwing into the C pillar trim.

The normal way of attaching bodykit parts is Tigerseal, so i recommend that and will be including some with every blade sold.

So the final prep is finished now and painted in white to highlight any small defects, and i'm happy to report there are none, it is perfectly smooth, so Friday morning this goes to my molder for the start of the mold making, i will get rough timescales from him and an estimate on costs. The molds cost a small fortune to have made and this one will mean two molds due to the shape, but the result will be worth it.

Updates coming when i know more.

Due to the fantastic response on this on all of the Mr2 boards in the UK and the US i have decided one lucky customer is going to get a free Kuki blade. Everyone in the group buy will be entered into a draw (decided by the lottery bonus ball that week i guess, good as any!), shipping will also be free to the winner.

Just my way of saying thankyou for the support.

I have 12 confirmed non internet orders, which takes us to 17 in total, so i should be able to get a good discount based on these very early no commitment numbers, that number will probably double as we near production. Once the group buy is done the website shop will list this at the full retail price for a single blade.

5 pound refund for a picture, not free for 35 pictures... So your retail price is a 175 pounds? :poke2:

Paul Woods
17-04-2016, 10:46
It's looking like being a £175 item as part of the group buy, but may well be cheaper as the numbers rise, if someone sends me a pic of the blade painted and fitted then they get a £5 refund.

The retail price outside of this group buy will be around or over £200 for an individual order later on.

If the number of orders gets over 30 i should be able to drop another £10 or so off the price, we shall see.

He would give us a 5 Pound refund if we sent him a picture of the wing fitted. But the wing wouldn't be free if we sent him 35 pics, hence 35 x 5 = 175 pounds.

I hope that made sense :eusa_think:

Been to see the molder again today and he's progressing well with it, and also ordered all of the high level brake light units, so this will come together pretty quickly now.

Please stop making stuff that looks this good, my project hasn't progressed anything in a year (which actually means it has gone backwards by a years worth of tin worm)and my completely standard "I'm not messing with this one" doesn't need one of these lovely too awesome not to buy one spoilers. Feck it, add me to the list for one, I'll mount it to the wall in my living room or something but it looks too damn good not to have one. Put me down as number 23.

What's the deal with the engine lid prop Paula? Can you still use the stock prop or are you supplying us all with gas rams?

Paul Woods
25-04-2016, 16:18
Ooo! I'm liking that.

Thankyou Lyndon.

Chris at the minute I'm just concentrating on getting the blade molded and the stop light sorted, I took delivery of 30 stop light units today, so I'm pretty committed to these now. The plan is to supply a shorter lid stay on an exchange basis as I want to keep costs right down, I dread to think how much new stays are from Toyota..... then that raises another issue, a shorter stay won't clip into the holder on the engine lid, it will be too short to reach it, so not totally sure yet.

I think maybe gas rams would be the best way to go.... we shall see when we get that far, I'm expecting a call from the molder in the next week or so with a progress update.

thomp1983

No problem Paul makes no difference to me 90% the time I just unbolt the lid for any real work but no doubt others will want a neat solution

Paul Woods

Just been told the mold was finished yesterday and the first production piece is ready for inspection tomorrow morning. So I will be assessing that for quality and fitment, if it meets expectation then I will go ahead with the full production run.
So tomorrow I will post pics of the finished product (unpainted) and we can go from there.

Paul Woods
27-04-2016, 16:21
The first pre-production run blade has come from the mold for quality control and fitting issues, and it is perfect, although now looks odd seeing it in a white gelcoat finish next to black I am very happy with the end product. All this will need is rubbing down/painting and fitting but I can now proceed with the full group buy production.

I am having 30 made in this first run at £170 each which includes the LED light unit, UK postage and packaging will be £15.

So everyone on the current list will get a PM from me in the next few days to confirm if they wish to proceed. I estimate it will take 2-3 weeks to have all 30 made.

When people start seeing these painted and fitted in person the larger orders will come, it's such a good looking part that really makes the Mk2 look like it's missing something. I'm happy with the first batch of order numbers to get this out there.

So we are getting very close now, full scale production is underway and i expect to have all orders completed very soon. I'd like to thank everyone for their orders, it isn't easy launching a new product, but i feel this is a really nice addition to the Mk2 and expect to see a lot of these fitted in years to come, the support and positive feedback over my new design has been overwhelming, thankyou.

Although I have no idea why some people have not even replied to my PMs despite logging in and reading them.

I like to run a very transparent and open group buy so that everyone knows exactly what is happening and progress updates along the way.
As a result of the no takers i have 3 blades from the first production run that will be up for grabs at the current price, after the group buy future orders will be at a higher price, i only get a group discount on multiple orders from my molder.

Thanks Paul.

I have started taking delivery of the finished Kuki blades now, i have 4 which will all be prepped and sent out as soon as possible, my molder is capable of producing 5 or 6 per week from the single mold we have so at the end of this week i will be sending another batch out, so it will take about 2-3 weeks to get everyone sorted, obviously i am sending the first ones to the fully paid group buy members.

Can i ask all those who have paid deposits to settle the balance in the next 2 weeks or so, there is no problem if you take longer than that, i will hold your blade as long as it takes.

I will update the list with exactly who has been sent one in due course.
