View Full Version : 1mz VVti Mk2 build

Now this is strange, bizzarely nobody in the UK has ever fitted a VVti 1mz (Rx300 engine) into a Mk2 yet, we have done loads of Camry 1mz swaps into all three marques, and 2 or 3 VVti Mk3 roadsters, but the easiest of them all into a Mk2 has never been done (to the best of my knowledge).

So anyway this car belongs to Tony, a local chap and keen Mr2 enthusiast, his former Mk2 just wasn't in good enough condition chassis wise to use for the conversion so he bought this lovely Sonic shadow. The car is also with me for a full respray into red, Tonys favourite colour.

The old 3sge has already been removed and work has started overhauling the VVti 1mz, here is the car with engine removed...

I've also stripped the engine bay ready for painting red, which will be done before the engine goes in.

Gearbox has had the LSD treatment and an extended 5th gear set....

I know of one other VVti 1mz being built elsewhere, so the race is on to be the first :)

Thanks for starting the build thread Paul and I'm looking forward to seeing things progress. Living just up the road from Woodsport has meant that I've been able to get loads of advice and help from you prior to the start of the conversion, including assistance with the purchase of the new car, for which I'm really grateful.

No probs Tony, i'll try to keep the build thread as detailed as possible, the engine bay gets painted tomorrow!

I can think of a few thats been built in the US one being Evildnb, one being offroaded by rally2 anotherby Brad Bedell for Ken still rare though and no1 pushing them :(
Brian hill had one but he couldn't get it to run properly so that engine set is for sale. I'm amazed you can even get those there

Mine could almost be considered a 1mz but the 3.3l bore gives it away. only thing 1mz vvti in my car the intake and the ecu setup. I have one annoying code to kill but that may go away when i go standalone for a 300hp HCR on my spare block (some day)

Paul Woods

Yes i know of a few in the US but quite surprising nobody has done one in the UK yet, but we only got that engine in the Lexus Rx300 here which is quite a luxury vehicle with a high price tag.

when the 3.3 gonna dwindle down there? then the fun hybrid stuff starts

Paul Woods
28-02-2013, 07:45
Like hens teeth here, i'm not even sure we got that motor in anything, maybe the odd lexus.

Spook
28-02-2013, 08:37
now that IS interesting!

Ive also come to the conclusion that my chassis will have too much rust for a worthwhile conversion, so a much newer NA would be a better choice, 2GR would be like christmas but too expensive, so I like the sound of an MZ for being lighter and VVti for revs, all in all a sweet lower cost package.

I take it we are looking at standard full re-spray, 5th gear & 1MZ cost ?

Paul Woods
28-02-2013, 19:15
The 1mz VVti packages cost around £1000 more than standard non Vvti 1mz engines.

Today the engine bay got an entire makeover, not content with just changing the bay colour i restored all of the components with a new coat of paint and fitted brand new nuts and bolts to everything, restored the fuel filler neck and heatshields back to as new, the new engine is going to have a very smart home.

Red is definitely the best colour on a car. I admire your decision to change it to red. And great stuff going vvti and not 2gr, will be a belter. Great work Paul. Looking forward to seeing how this turns out. Might have to send my car up to Paul for some paint to get it looking nice.

I did not know there hadn't been one done! It's the engine we're gonna stick in Rachel's car - hopefully early next year :)
Swap looks great so far but shame on you for spraying a Sonic Shadow!! :p

It's looking really good. I can't wait to see the finished article, and I'm looking forward to the next batch of photos.

Paul - shame on you for finishing this first considering I started my build before you lol!

At the end of the day, a cars colour boils down purely to personal preference. For me, red is the colour of choice for a MR2. The sonic is smart but it does not excite! No hate mail please from adoring sonic shadow owners!

Paul Woods

Perhaps the following pics of the UKs first Mk2 1mz VVti engine in place will appease the sonic fans!

Tony asked me for a Graphite/gunmetal and black scheme, i get asked for this colour a lot and it looks fantastic against the red.

Anyway the engine and gearbox slipped in today, i had to lower the fusebox by 2" to clear the forthcoming intake pipe that i will be making, and the exhaust manifolds and downpipe set up is going to be different. The engine is now fully plumbed to rad lines and heater hoses....

The plan is to have it running by the end of next week.

TonyL
01-03-2013, 18:51
That looks excellent, Paul. It's amazing how quickly everything is coming together. Have the exhaust manifolds been matched yet?

Paul Woods
01-03-2013, 18:55
No not yet, the manifolds need a lot of custom work so it will be done then, glad you like it Tony it's getting the full Woodsport treatment!

Looks real nice. The black and silver simply gives it that factory look, excellent.

Now running, although the bay still needs a lot of work including finishing the intake off but i couldn't resist firing her up, this is literally within the first two minutes of running, so a high idle and still work to do...

Good work Paul, nice to know there are still firsts for a veteran like you!

Joshma (Hydramr2) had a 1mz vvti fitted in his MK2 last year.

After the MK2 got approved with the engine he took it out again to go brutal with it. (as he posted up here before)

OK ..... you can have it.

I've gone off it a bit since I found out it isn't going to be that nice silver & black colour - it's going red instead.

Common as muck red is !!! ;)

This is really funny, all this technical wizardry going on, Paul's undertaking a UK first.. ........

And we're all having a big debate about the colour!!!!!!!

Just for my colour debate contribution, it's a personal choice, whatever takes your fancy, but I have always had this weird pathalogical hatred for red cars!!! That's just me.
But that conversion is gonna be lovely though, it's the one I'd really, really like - especialy as it's getting the LSD and 5th gear trreatment too.

The owner of that car is such a lucky person, its a goodthing for him you're a nut! Otherwise that would be a $1500 intake!

Don't bother with full leather steering wheels they can get slippery and greasy from your hands half leather and alacantra were you grip the wheel stops your hands getting sweaty, unless you use the leather with tiny holes in it so it can breath .
