You know you have a great idea then it turns out some one has already done it, argh oh well back to the drawing board.

Good luck with this personally I would have got power steering bigger wheels and getting older its a must have, will be awesome when finished and god will forgive you as long as it still looks like a mk1 escort at the end of the day.

How easy will it be to work on the engine after , the baseof the rear window looks like it will be on top of the engine then the front and rear firewall of the Mr will be either side ? Just intrigued to see how it will marry up , but excellent project !

What a fantastic project, it will be stunning once done, a very inventive way to make a Mk1 Escort handle and go properly, well and truly subscribed!

i can respect the work, it does seem to be going well, but i do have to ask why.

the MR2 is far from a modern chassis, with the 4 wheel strut based suspension it's far from a hero on the track.

either way, i respect the dedication :)

Paul Woods

The best project i've seen on TB for many a year, if ever!

My only criticism is that spunky 3s-fe, please tell me it's going to get a V6 or 3s-gte?

Either way you're doing something so cool that most of us could only dream of doing, keep it up!

It's worse than that Marc.

People are reading this thread and trying to figure out what else they can scalp and bolt onto a Two.

My lunatic brother and I have already been looking at wheelbase measurements.

:)

Although I have to say I did cringe when I saw this. Mk1 escorts are neither cheap nor plentiful......

Paul Woods
30-10-2012, 07:29
I take Goukys point though, the Escort is RWD in standard form as is the Mr2, the Escort is easier to control in a drift, the Mr2 isn't.... but i think the point is the Mr2 is lightyears ahead of the Escort in technology, so you get old school looks but "modern" components.

Taking it a stage further would be using the Mk3 (but with engine swapped), that handles really well, and plonking a classic over it.

That reminds me, we really should get Troys Mr2 mini on TB

30-10-2012, 10:58
oh, i wasn't saying it isn't cool. it's always neat to see people doing their own thing like this. as long as it gets to completion and does not end up being scrap metal on both counts i can get behind it.

as for drifting an MR2, suprisingly once you adjust the tire sizes and the suspension for more camber and put a boatload of 2gr torque i find it drifts pretty easy and predictably.

but what i'm getting at is why not something like a first gen subaru instead? keeps the engine out of the driver's compartment and gets AWD. or if you still want RWD, an S2000 has a much nicer suspension and the exact same wheelbase as an MR2. the rx8 is about 10" too long, but cutting down a driveshaft and the shell in the middle would not be hard.

anyways, carry on!

I remember back in the 70's when I used to go to Oulton Park there was a guy called John Myerscough had an Escort Mk1 withy a Lotus Elan chassis that he raced in the Special Saloons. I think this car had a plastic body though.

MR2's are cheap as chips here, you can pick up one for less than £300 with ratty bodywork and a current MOT. An S2000 would set you back at least £3,000 for one that's been crashed!

I think the project is a great idea, I mean Mk1 escorts ran leaf springs and a live axel which doesn't make for great cornering! I managed to (Just) get past one on a track day which had a 2.0 litre vauxhall XE engine in the front in my 3SFE engined MR2, took me about 4 laps though! Pauls suggestion of a MK3 chassis could be a great call, how does the Mazda MX5 wheel base compare?

Was trying to create such a thread so as not to hijack...but couldn't see how (I don't post on here much).

Anyway here is one such, I've linked to this before but still good (my mate's 337bhp 5.7 V8 Triumph Spitfire):-

And another - 4WD VTEC Mini (original):-

Back on topic...loving this project but I too would've been inclined to go with some form of FR layout base as mentioned above. To me that's part of the fun with Fords of that era (loved my two Capris!). Fast work though, and will await the finished article with interest. 2GR FTW!

I fancy a twin turbo 2gr mk1 shedscort front engine supra six speed box, but it maybe better with goukys idea of a ford v8 425bhp and supercharger=650bhp or turbo= 800+ bhp if I can tub out the arches and find an axle that can take a 1000bhp lol.

Reckon you've already done it and are just teasing us with pictures! ;-) its amazing how well it seems to fit, will the body shell be welded on or unboltable? I take it this won't be road legal?

snowtigger
31-10-2012, 10:16
Why would it not be road legal if all the mot/sva requirements are met every things solid and welded in place it should be good to go.

Also 700+ bhp out of a top tuned £12 k engine, a normal rev 3 with inter cooler /charge cooled about 250/300bhp all depends on injectors ecu they rid turbo and exhaust, fully forged internals and a good hg about 420 bhp any thing over and reliability suffers.

Lovely project this, I'm watching a similar project on Pistonheads where a chap mated a Citroen C2 shell onto the bottom of a Mitsi Evo with all the running gear. The speed between starting the project and having it running in basic form was amazing.

You are ditching the ashmatic FE engine for something fruitier though?

cdwood2010
01-11-2012, 11:01
Is there a name given to this kind of project?

Two cars cut and bolted together is generally known as a "Cut and shut".

How about:-

"Chop and Plop"?

I see all the OP posts have "vanished". Methinks legality issues?

snowtigger
01-11-2012, 11:34
Are but a cut and shut refers to two cars a front and back being welded in the middle, as long as the chassis is welded to the out side frame it and looks to have loads of bracing.

If it was my car I would build an internal roll cage and weld it in.
