Barely have I cleared down the bench and already thoughts run to the next build.

Take one perfectly good tintop:-

http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2012/02/354.jpg

One exceptionally low mileage (80k apparently!) 3VZ:-

http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2012/03/147.jpg

It's really clean, a light coating of oil / road dirt and that's about it. Even the manifold covers look new!

As mentioned previously, this is the car we bought from Rowdan last year, sold it to a guy who removed the engine for his MR2, and then bought back as a rolling shell.

This car is kind of being built to order, so I will actually be spending a few pounds on all the things I don't normally. Like hoses and paint.

Yeah yeah, get over it.

Still need a few shopping items, but I'm hoping this will be a quick turnaround.

More soon!

Chris.

Glad to see rowans old car getting the love it deserves, spend a few pounds on this please it deserves it are you going to paint the cam covers gold then?

Good question, the original black and gold theme worked really well. I was thinking black / silver / red etc, but i will have a chin scratch and go from there.

Whatever colour scheme i go with, i will need to make sure i can match the hoses etc or it will just look daft!

Okay, a few people have asked me if I'm going into business or something doing V6 swaps. I can categorically say that I'm not!

Firstly I've tried working for myself in past, and I nearly starved to death. I'm just not motivated enough. I don't get into my garage until after lunch on the weekends. I guess I like sleep more than cars!

Secondly I work in IT / comms, and trust me when I say it's a bit like getting payed to play golf or something. It's not hard work and it pays the bills nicely.

I only ever got into the MR2 thing because my little brother got a raging stiffy for a V6 in his then dormant Mk2. I liked the sound of it, so I agreed to host it and fund it, or at least float him. TBC! And he only got the idea from finding Paul's original Mk1 V6 swap build thread - making it his fault!

Truly though, I have had so much fun, not just with bodging our swaps together, but the whole TB community which I think we all must agree, is unmatched elsewhere.

I'm a big believer in what the club does, so I'm sticking around for the foreseeable future, a couple more 3VZ swaps and then the 2GR. I'm hoping that by then I might be getting somewhere close to passable as a mechanic.

I'm really glad to help out other members where I can, I'm very proud to have been counted worthy enough to be made a moderator, and I am really really looking forward to seeing all you Adams Family rejects at JAE 2012.

I have no idea what car I will be in, but rest assured it will be brutal!

And probably bodged.

:)

Well said, big fella.

When we fitted a door to my car we spent about 3 hours on it and 5 hours talking about TB. It's more than a club it's a community. As a result I am pleased beyond belief to not only be getting a V6 but the opportunity to take part in fitting it.

Like the others said, get on with build #4 you girl.

why thankyou sir...
there is a trick I used,

I had the lump on a pallet on the floor,

so before I removed the starter ring that sits behind the torque converter, I wedged my half inch extension bar through one of the holes in the starter ring and wedged it into the pallet below the engine,
then went round to the crank pully, stuck on a socket that fit, plugged in ratchet, and gave it a tap with a mallet and bingo.. off it went..

Probably going to clean up the gearbox too, along with the engine bay.

Called in and picked up two LUK clutches and two alternator belts, think I'm almost there aside from plumbing and fluids.

The Black (build #3) should be out of the garage this weekend. A quick shuffle should see the next car in ready to start the prep work for engine fitting!

Paul Woods

Looking great mate, can i ask about the clutches? Are these cars tubby gearboxed? You seem to have bought a complete clutch kit, but a turbo kit won't work on the NA box, and an NA clutch won't work on a turbo box, so what clutch have you bought?

I ask because i sometimes struggle to get clutches from my supplier, they used to sell NA friction plates and turbo pressure plates separately, now i can only buy whole kits.

cdwood2010
02-04-2012, 07:40
Hi Paul,

Rowdans car was a turbo, but I'm pinching the tubby box and bits for the 2GR.

I've fitted an n/a flywheel and clutch kit. The LUK kits come in at well under £100 and being German, they're very good quality. They're certainly physically stronger to look at than the stock n/a ones I've seen.

I buy a lot of bits from a local factors - Parrs Motor Spares.

http://parrsmotorspares.co.uk/

Worth giving them a try, they really bend over backwards, especially when we get into 'what car is it for?'.

I can get items couriered up if they have what you need.

Chris.

Paul Woods
02-04-2012, 07:47
Ah i see, so are these LUK kits actually higher rated than a stock NA one? Do they actually have that claim? I ask because we know the stock NA clutch will not last more than 6 months on a V6, hence why we go turbo fly/turbo pressure plate/na friction on NA boxed cars.

cdwood2010
02-04-2012, 07:53
On paper they're a direct replacement for the stock mk2.

They're certainly a stronger clutch though. When I bolted this one up Saturday there's a lot of pressure to take up before the pp is clamped down. You can see this on the springs in the centre, the whole profile changes.

Not quite as much as the Techniclutch, but in that general direction.

By comparison the n/a clutches are only a few mm of the fly face, and seem a tad gentle compared to.

Chris.

Paul Woods
02-04-2012, 08:00
Ok, let's see how they work out long term, it sounds like they are beefier, and if they actually are i'll be keen on using them as it means not having to go down the turbo fly route.

cdwood2010
02-04-2012, 13:00
Ok, let's see how they work out long term, it sounds like they are beefier, and if they actually are i'll be keen on using them as it means not having to go down the turbo fly route.

Indeed. I've always said though, if your car is a daily driver or weekend sunshine car, I don't really think you would ever have a problem.

I've got one here for johns swap (still no build thread John?) after we had the conversation. His car will very much be an occasional use / weekender, and with driving in traffic in the big smokey, I think makes a lot more sense than a 4 puck!

If you want a track day toy, or if you drive like Pat, then chances are you need to spend accordingly. Or swap your clutch a lot.

The annoying thing is that the £69 Techniclutch that we fitted to pats is still working perfect after a year of pretty tasty driving. Can't bring myself to use one again after they screwed me over. The LUK looks very similar to those.

I will check with the guy that bought BBQ, as theres one in there, although I think he would have mentioned if it had given any issues.

Chris.

Right, got some stuff done today. Finished painting bits, so stuck it all back together. I think that's about as much attention as its getting for the minute. Might add some colour to some other bits when it gets fitted. For now it's staying like this:-

http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2012/04/71.jpg

Got some plumbing to do on the engine, I removed the EGR chamber so I need to replace a water pipe to bypass it, and tidy up the vacuum hoses as the canister has been removed.

Started getting the engine bay ready, not much to do but a lot of surplus crap to remove, cables to tidy and (brace yourselves) some cleaning to do!

Surgery commences:-

http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2012/04/72.jpg

Removed the few remaining items, old brackets, original resonator box, and the fuel breather pipes that went to the emissions set up. Starting to look a bit ready:-

http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2012/04/73.jpg

Need to get the engine bay nice and clean, been using those wet wipes a lot! Also need to tidy up the loom as it all got tugged about when the engine was removed.

At some point I need to get the gearbox out of the frunk and onto the bench so I can get it cleaned down.

More soon!

Yeah, ideally it needs taking to someone who can either pattern another plate to replace the one that the fans are fastened to, or just make an exact overlay.

Or, as I suggested, just do it in tin foil!

Anyway, thread back on track!

Made some excellent progress in the BodgeLair today.

Engine bay sorted, chopped wiring wrapped and fed back into the boot. Fuel pump relay fixed in position, and then I decided on a bloody good clean and a coat of VHT lacquer. Which left it looking like this:-

http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2012/04/131.jpg

Then I dragged the gearbox out of the frunk and heaved it onto the bench. It looked like this:-

http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2012/04/132.jpg

A couple of hours scrubbing, hoovering and cleaning with wet wipes and it now looks like this:-

Decided not to try and get the engine in on my own. Finger still hurts from yesterday and there's no shame in waiting for assistance. In the meantime....

Got the starter motor cleaned up and fitted, along with the gearbox mounts, although waiting on the slave to finish bolting the front one down. Need to thread lock a few bolts too.

Removed the back plates from the n/a hubs, as I think they're past their best!

http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2012/04/348.jpg

Hacked up a loom for the bits I need to graft to the 3VZ harness. It's the wrong harness for this car, but it should be interesting.....

Car now ready for hoofing in the engine.

http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2012/04/351.jpg

And that's about it. Need a couple more bits - spring clips etc and some fluids, and it's ready to go in once the clutch slave arrives. Really don't fancy fitting it after the engine is in.

Oh, and I need to rob the gearbox speedo drive off the black II, and wire that in somewhere.

More soon.

Yo Yo C-Dog!

Do the rear hubs need to come off to get the engine and gearbox in?

The photo's of the loom are interesting. Got mine on the engine and just in the process of stripping the sheaths off. Then it's engine off the stand, fit the oil-seal and flywheel etc...

Hello mate!

I've dropped the hubs (literally on my finger!) as I'm fitting an n/a box, and need to fit the shafts and hibbing to suit.

Normally we just detach the handbrake cables and pivot the swing arms out of the way, plenty of room.

Once the engine is in I will get it wired up and firing, then reassemble the suspension. Just in case it needs to come out again! :-0

The loom I'm cutting is a mk2 loom - just hacked off the bits I need. The rest of it is in a bag!

Ahh right, that makes sense. Hadn't appreciated that the shaft splines are different on a tubby box to a NA box.

I know Pat is heading your way this weekend so if its cool with you, Mim and I were thinking about popping in on Sunday to bring Pats wing and pick up his skirts. Oh and you owe me £30 I am pleased to say ;) but don't let that put you off saying yes!

Yep, more than welcome. Got totally confused on the skirts / skirts / spoiler swap shop thing!

Yes, kettle will be on, will have cash ready for you!

That's great mate thanks. Yeah it got more complicated when Pat bought a spoiler off me.

So is the plan to get this engine mounted this weekend?

Due to a bit of a late start, some missing supplies and a window motor playing up on the black we got into the BodgeLair mid afternoon. Pathetic I know.

Anypoo, added the clutch slave, nut locked all the mount bolts then hoofed the engine in:-

A tidgy bit of wiring to do!

http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2012/05/59.jpg

As we used a bit of a hodgepodge of wiring loom bits, random engine components and some stuff I found in the garage, it took a bit longer.

http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2012/05/60.jpg

But the good news is that we obviously got it right!

Tomorrow we will tidy up the wiring and get the rest of the plumbing sorted out.

When we eventually get up!

People keep turning up to ask me stuff and make me drink beer!

Aaaaaaargh!!!!

Anyway, finally got some time in the BodgeLair, long enough to fit an exhaust. It ain't purdy, but it's lovely and quiet!

Standard Cammy downpipe, standard n/a rear box, and signature BodgeSport bit in the middle!

All I have left to do on this build is put some gearbox oil in, put the rear brakes back together and stick it back on the ground.

Oh, and see if it actually drives!!!

Off to test the theory some more!

Either that or that boat that James bond was hooning down the Thames in....
