View Full Version : Mk1 Mr2 Coupe

A while back OlberJ did a photoshop mock up of a Mk1 but converted to a Coupe, Anth and i are pretty taken with the shape of it, infact we think it looks so much better than an AE86. We are just thrashing this one around at the moment but we are seriously considering building this, the shape just works so well and wouldn't be too difficult for us to pull off.

I already have a spare Mk1 here as a donor, and the plan would be to build it as a wide wheel arched car like the BMW Z3 Coupe.

As a basic concept though we love it, well done to Olie for the design, just goes to show not all cunts are useless :laugh2:

Opinions?

Mint... V mint! You could could have some great engine bay open bling going on!

A style auto rear would wrap the end around the arch a little more and look great I think.

Get it made

Chaps not wanting to spoil your fun but it looks a lot like the celica 165

I really like that, very much in the mould of the Z3 coupe, but easier on the eye. A lot of work to do that I bet.

No point in beating around the bush, it looks hideous imo.

Looks v. nice, Paul.....

Maybe a little too Volvo 480...?

But seriously, why waste the time? You can spend it much better by building a 222D replica...which, by the time you've widened the arches and fitted the rear "coupe" bit, wont be that much more work...?

Seems to be a marmite mod, with some loving it and some hating it, i don't know it just seems to work really well to me.

Do a 222d mate, or a 4 seater mk1 is what I'm thinking of doing to two scrap shells as then I can have the best of both worlds I'm also thinking d4d turbo diesel or crash damaged Prius I've found for £900 make the mk1 über lite weight.

Exhaust? That won't change, i'm not with you there matey?

cdwood2010
01-03-2012, 18:54
Well the exhaust sits under the boot, which looks like its getting chopped off! Just wondered how you saw the exhaust fitting in with this.

I like the idea of this on a mk2, as it would shed a bit of arse end weight!

For a man who is a self confessed hater of most body mods, I really like this;

I think it's got a lot of volvo 480 going on (another car I had a soft spot for until I found it was FWD and didn't follow the true volvo naming convention)

Ah, optical illusion, no arse chop going on there, it's just a Mk1 with the roof moved rearward to sit flush with the rear light panel. I think a Mk2 would look truly terrible done like this, it's got to be a Mk1 if any.

Agreed, i think that's what i like about it, it definitely splits opinions though.

Be interesting to see a mk2 coupe the back of mk2 is very weak compared to the front might "cough" transform it how about a trd widebody coupe

If I ever manage to get the space, I'm planning in making a convertible mk2, I know Toyota did them in very few numbers.. theres only few in the uk..

Why not resurrect the mk1 convertible idea ?
They built a couple in the states, get a t top slice the roof of weld in some box section in the sides or even make an s l r take the windscreen off as well and flush it I think that would look awesome.

I agree its an 80s z3 coupe. Love it sort of. The hardest part Will be the rear quarter glass.
Stop talking and build it.

We thought we could use removeable plexi in those areas for engine access.

Anyone got a Mk1 roof they'd like to donate :) ?

Why don't you build a topless mk1 and use the roof for the coupe! Job done!

03-03-2012, 22:18
more like the "pulsar exa" with the big boot, in looks...actually thought about buying one many years back...kinda glad I didnt.

but the v8 coupe, deffinatly seems the winner.

id be carful with the b pillar, would not wanna make it pillarless, as the car may fold without being tied to the roof, unless your putting some formed up tubes inside the roof line, "A pillar" to rear strut at least. but Im sure if Im not crazy enough to build it, paul will make a good job of it:)

its just not floating my boat front engined rear drive v8 or 2jz drift mobile maybe but its a mk1 why ruin perfection, ive thought of making a bodykit to make a mk3 look like a mk1 what do you think?

Variety is the spice of life mate and it's good that new ideas keep coming through or else we would all drive the same cars, live in the same houses but NOT support the same team. Keep ideas coming but get the bloody v8 finished first.

04-03-2012, 22:40
dont get me wrong i like it but just dont get it, we want the v8 and red v6 vvti sorted first plus finish of that bloody t sport, before you hack up another mk1.

can any body photo shop the boot of a mk1 in other words shorten the rear end then fit the roof like paul wants.

OlberJ
04-03-2012, 22:59
It's not an estate, it's a coupe.

I don't expect everyone to get it, but I love it.

It's no a fricken coupe. The standard non t-bar is a coupe. That's a hatch back or a shooting brake.

What you gonna do about cooling? I know the Clio V6 gets away with the top being closed in completely but do they have side fans or something?

Paul Woods
05-03-2012, 07:21
It's what i call a coupe or a hatchback, an estate is big enough for a coffin.... Mk1 hearse anyone?

Good call on the airflow Olie, i will have made a parachute doing this, so i'll need to design in an air exit path somewhere.

nik
05-03-2012, 10:08
i think it looks tha bollox fella!! love it!! you could factor in a 'parcel shelf' above the engine to make it a little more practical than a mk1 too..!

Paul Woods

parcel shelf?...NAH, its the warming draw for pizza deliveries....

Ill get me coat...

Im thinking it wont be as straight forward as we think, and Id probably go shopping for a T-top as a base to start with(if its got anything in common with the sw20 with having extra verticle sections in the sills, and and extra layer in the a pillar)

Id then take the skin off the roof and weld in a regular hard top with the top of the doors over the targa bracing.run a bar from the top of the b down to the strut tower before cutting the base of the c pillar...maybe Im just thinking through somebody else's project to much...lol

feel free to ask Paul, I may have a different solution to bodywork issues before you get to them, usually I stand and look at the car with a pen and paper, or draw on it with vivid when I try to figure things out....then weeks later Ill actually do the cutting and tacking...after Ive had a chance to run through the possible downsides. unless you have a big supply of cars to trash if you stuff up...lol

Paul Woods
06-03-2012, 07:08
Some good shit there Sketchy, i agree with you, not quite as simple as chop chop weld! I think if i cut the C pillars out then i definately need to put a bar back in there running back up to the roof top, possibly a full cage just to be on the safe side. That way the rest of it can be a cosmetic add-on without affecting the structural rigidity..... i don't fancy cutting a Mk1 up and it folds in half.... catastrofuck!

sketchy
07-03-2012, 03:21
a full cage may be over the top. if you do the targa trick, as the top of the doors from a full hard top will add more strength to the door frame if your careful how you check it into the door;), its not a hi stress/heavy car, and if you keep it 4age, or 4agze I dont think youd need to go nuts with the pipe work anyway. a v6 or a v8 and Id say make it stupid....

and if you go full cage it starts to become an access issue, besides it would be more fun having people come up and scratch their heads trying to figure out how, and what you have actually done
