One of my own personal projects this one, much like the Rav6, i've had the idea to stick a 3s-gte into a T sport Corolla for a while now and i've found myself with a few days to kill while Toyota get their act together and get my parts order in which is holding up my normal work, so rather than sit thumb twiddling i thought it would be a good chance to make a start on the project.

Here is the Corolla in question... i bought the whole car last year for its engine so with that removed we have an empty bay all ready for its new throbbing heart transplant.

http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2012/01/104.jpg

The plan here is to create a shopping cart sleeper, take the T sport badges off it and "de-spec" it a little so it looks like a normal Corolla, hell i might even put steel wheels and plastic wheel trims on it!

A close up of the bay, looks pretty big ay?

http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2012/01/105.jpg

You know how this goes, we have a fabrication stage were an uncleaned, unpainted engine/gearbox is stuck in, all mounts made and everything 100% fabricated before the whole thing is torn down for final repaint and fitting, so just in case you're new to our swaps you might think we are being a little scruffy here and there, well relax the end result will be pretty, but for now we only want raw fabrication.

So without any further messing, lets throw a 3s-gte into the bay and see how we go! I should mention for fabbing purposes i've bolted the engine to an old Rev1 Mk2 NA gearbox, this won't be used for final assembly, i will be using an St202 Celica box which of course has the selector linkages on the correct side for a front wheel drive application like this..... anyhoo, onward....

Initial lowering in gave us a surprise, there is tons of space in this bay front to rear, and loads of height, you may remember our last 3s-gte Corolla which was Daras AE101, that thing had very little bay height and sump clearance was a major issue, on this Corolla the sump sits level with the Corolla subframe, great stuff.

The engine/box is tight left to right, i've a little "adjusting" to do on the chassis legs with the BFH, but only a few mil.

http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2012/01/106.jpg

You may notice there's no turbo on this engine, that will be fitted later.

http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2012/01/107.jpg

That, believe it or not, is the engine sitting right where it needs to be, it was too simple in fact, i'm expecting a problem to arise because it was about the easiest an engine has ever gone into a bay.

Work immediately started on making the left side mount, using Mk2 NA stuff but the hanger assembly is all WS created, and totally unbolts from the chassis, if we welded this side in it would have made engine removal a bit of a twat, or Phil as he's also known :icon_biggrin:

http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2012/01/108.jpg

http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2012/01/109.jpg

There was a few hours graft in that mount but it just needs cleaning up and painting on final assembly.

The right side mount was a little trickier, this needed a Mk2 NA mount extending to clear the chassis and then two chassis plates welding in to hold the mount, this one was ok to be welded and won't affect the engine removal, shit like that's important.

http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2012/01/110.jpg

http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2012/01/111.jpg

I'll add a top hat section to this later, and also seam seal/paint the chassis.

The Torque mounts on this car will both be polyurethane, i want as little engine movement as possible even at the expense of a bit of chassis vibration, the plenum sits close to the bulkhead and clutch master cylinder, we don't want it hitting that on hard launches of which there will be many!

The front torque mount is a combo of rejigged Mk2NA front torque mount and handmade U bracket, the lower crossmember that joins front and rear torque mounts has had a notch taken out of it to clear the gearbox but no biggy...

http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2012/01/112.jpg

http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2012/01/113.jpg

The rear torque mount is a simpler affair, we use the original Corolla bracket, stuff a polymount into it and make a U shaped bracket joining that to the gearbox, bread n butter stuff.

You can see the plenum tucks under the firewall nicely, what we call a cosy fit.

http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2012/01/114.jpg

So there she is all hung and ready to plumb! I'm going with a chargecooler set up here rather than a front mounted IC, it looks cleaner and i can't be arsed to make IC pipes on this one, so there.

http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2012/01/115.jpg

http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2012/01/116.jpg

Tell you what, that's gonna fukin rip no? We have a lot of experience with front engined stuff so i think the biggest problem will be torque steer and scrabbling for traction.

I have until Friday to get as much done on this as possible before she goes on the backburner until the next free period, so there will be lots of updates then sweet FA

Oh I'm liking that!

What was the original engine details Vs the 3S-GTE?

And your welding is an effing sight better than mine....

The 2zz is 190bhp na v 250bhp (sky's the limit tuning wise though) and a shitload of torque on full boost.

It'll be one very quick corolla, the plan being to go out and kill expensive stuff with it looking like a family shopping cart.

Brilliant.

Totally love sleepers. Next build after the swaps has to be a mad one.

I'm taking the next V6 up the road to the car parks when it's done. Those kids in their mums hot hatches won't know what to make of it.

Chris.

250 bhp on the front wheels is going to be fun  How did it handle the original 190?

How did it handle the original 190?

Badly lol , i don't rate the handling on these at all, but it did have shit Nankangmargaramadingdongyingyong tyres on the front that had zero grip, might have to put some real stickies on the front.

Looks great  .... but don't you want to get the V8 done...?

Yeah yeah yeah ... alright .... people in glass houses and all that :D

I'll get my coat!

Nankangmargaramadingdongyingyong tyres on the front that had zero grip

Put those on the back, then they are only used to make sure the exhaust isnt dragging over the street.. Stupid front wheel layout  I just replaced some skdhfkshfsdkf wheels on my work car (now continentals) and the difference is amazing, i can actually go around a roundabout instead of straight through it!

I would loose the mirrors/rims/spoiler/badges and put some slicks on the front, then only use it for summer traffic light races, nobody will know what hit them!

Today was spent on just one bracket, but a very important one.

The T sport has a supported driveshaft arrangement like the Mk2 Turbo, but we cannot use turbo shafts on this swap because i'm using a Celica NA gearbox. Now who would put money on the original T sport driveshafts fitting a S54 gearbox? Anyone? Well they do! This is part of the reason i will always be a lifelong Toyota nut, the parts interchangeability is just amazing, you can take parts from a new Toyota and pretty much bet it will also fit a 25 year old Toyota and vice-versa.

So the upshot is the original T sport shafts are the correct length and will just work without mods on the 3s-gte/S54 setup, how d'ya like them apples.

The only problem with it being a supported type is there is no bracket to hold the bearing, so i've had to make one, no big deal really i've done this many times before and is pretty standard issue on a Mk3 V6 swap etc.

After 8 hours graft here is the bracket i've ended up with, a complex little fecker, but strong and functional...

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v624/paddy1970/Woodsport 5/Img_0256-1.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v624/paddy1970/Woodsport 5/Img_0257-1.jpg

I've picked up whatever bolt holes were available on the back of the block, including the two bolts that hold the E153 carrier bracket.

Painted and fitted...

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v624/paddy1970/Woodsport 5/Img_0258-1.jpg

With the driveshaft installed...

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v624/paddy1970/Woodsport 5/Img_0259-1.jpg

I have to say that without a plasma cutter this job would take a week.

Awesome work batman..... it'll be pretty quick when it's done, you'll be needing a set of R888's on the front for some grip!

Front mount intercooler would surely be the way forward as the engine is in the right place for it!

Paul Woods
12-01-2012, 19:36
Naa, i'm going chargecooled on this one bud, can't be bothered to make the IC pipes with what little time i have, it's a plumbing nightmare too... plus i've got a complete CC system spare and the whole install will be tons neater.

It'll be a keeper i think Tiggs, something different to goon around in, and a demo car for any test pilots that fancy the conversion themselves.

13-01-2012, 09:23
How do you feel the N/A box will hold up to turbo abuse Paul? I know V6's seem to do ok - upto 270 with SC's but that's a very linear delivery. TC's tend to give nothing then everything. I'm sure it'll be fine but for how long though... 10 hard launches, 20, 30?

That said i have an Act 6 puck N/A friction plate here if needed.

that's not to take anything away from what should be an epic little FWD motor :)

Paul Woods
13-01-2012, 16:01
A very valid point mate, we gave it a fair bit of thought, and the upshot is we don't really have a choice because if we went turbo box (with gt4 linkages) the shafts would not fit the hubs, and you can't just fit St185 outers on these T sports, the spline shape is different, so that means custom shafts or CV's...

So we know of a few NA boxes running on turbos without issue, they are pretty strong units, there is even a 2gr running on one!! yeah i know! We've had supercharged V6's pumping through them ok so i think it will be alright as long as i don't start going mental with boost and putting uber sticky tyres on, in this case a bit of slip will protect the box/shafts etc

It will be fun finding out all the same.

Day 3 of the build (and the last day i'm going to get working on it for a week or two) saw some good progress, i'm almost finished with the fabrication stage.

I started by working out the shifter cables, the original T sport ones just aren't anywhere near long enough, so i had to remove them, what a pig of a job! There is a bolt that holds the cable grommet over the centre tunnel that is "almost" impossible to get at, to remove it properly is a full dashboard and heater assembly removal to get at it, but there was no way i was spending 5 hours doing that just to get one bolt out, so i spent around an hour just undoing one bolt 1/8th of a turn every go in a horrible cramped position.... the bolt in question is under here...

http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2012/01/125.jpg

With that bolt from hell removed i got the cables and shifter assembly out. I found a pair of Mk2 NA cables to be the perfect length for this swap, but they needed mods to work, they had to be altered to fit into the Celica gear cable housings properly... (here is also my Celica st202 box)

http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2012/01/126.jpg

On the shifter end i've had to cut M6 threads into the Mk2 cable, screw on a barrel nut and fit the Corolla shifter balljoint end...

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v624/paddy1970/Woodsport%205/Img_0268.jpg

The other cable gets similar treatment.

In the bay the throttle cable bracket got cut down, this allowed the T sport cable to be used...

http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2012/01/127.jpg

And with a re-routing of the cable it works perfectly...

http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2012/01/128.jpg

I've made the coolant filler point from the Mk2 fit along with the Gt4 chargecooler pump just sat behind it...

http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2012/01/129.jpg

For a radiator i have ditched the T sport one, it just isn't big enough for the 3s-gte, instead i've fitted a Mk1 Mr2 rad, this worked really well on Daras AE101 so we have repeated it here, the good thing is the rad pipes hook up very easily...

http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2012/01/130.jpg

Also got the Fiat Cinquecento radiator fitted that deals with the chargecooler coolant...

http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2012/01/131.jpg

And mock fitted the Gt4 chargecooler itself, still no turbo fitted but i have loads of space for that...

http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2012/01/132.jpg

That's me done for the time being, more updates when i get more time to work on it, but i've accomplished a lot in 3 days, can't wait for final assembly when everything gets cleaned and painted.

will there be any difficulty with passing the emissions in a MOT test on a swap like this, an older engine in a newer body?

Paul Woods
13-01-2012, 22:08
Engine converted cars have different emissions rules than stock engined cars, if you use a pre 95 engine in any car it will no longer need a CAT

I can easily keep the CAT if I wanted but it's not necessary.

myers
14-01-2012, 09:20
vosa are supposed to be changing the rules on cats this year so be ready to start fitting them on the cars 92 (k reg) onwards, rule will be if it had one fitted originaly it must be there even if it passes CO2 test.
Does not say it has to have anything inside, just be there!

So a decat pipe would do!?

Paul Woods
14-01-2012, 09:41
We can fit the CAT, test the car with it so it passes emissions, then stick a de-cat pipe on it for the rest of the year.

Yeah, but here I am thinking.

Some of the decat pipes I've seen look like a cat.

And if it's only a visual inspection, then you could sleeve the cat with a bit of 2" pipe.

Here is another new one from april this year i just spotted, engine mounts will be a testable component.
so basicaly if your making new mounts and your welding aint to good the tester looks at it thinks its unsafe your car will FAIL.

cdwood2010
14-01-2012, 12:38
Bloody hell.

Thankfully the MK2 swap uses standard mounts (or it can) plus one fabricated mount which, if you're using the Woodsport one, looks pretty good.

The emphasis will be on anyone carrying out a Mk1 swap, especially things like Geoffs Alfa V6. Thankfully he can weld!

I on the other hand prefer a grind and paint finish!

Deadly_Smell
14-01-2012, 16:10
The problem with all these new rules is that they are all open to the subjective opinion of the tester on the day, the car may fail with one tester and pass with another with a different opinion of the same thing. Unlike a rust hole which speaks for itself, the quality of engine mounts and the huge variety of types can be very much down to the sometimes biased opinion of whoever is looking at them. Very much pot luck. Choose where you have your car tested with care and the new rules become nonsense.
As to cat shaped pipes, or fitting a cat just for the MOT, well whats the point of the test if it can be cheated that easily why bother with the test it's unenforceable, the chances of being caught out by a roadside check is so remote as to be nonexistent.

Sorry, small rant about European based rules introduced without thought of how it will all work and be of any use.

Time to pick this project back up, January was the last time any work got done on it, so today Jay and i removed the engine for final prepping and ready for the big refit. The engine was thoroughly cleaned and major parts detailed, i'm not going mad on this build, i just want to create a 3s-gte T-sport, the big power mods can come later if it proves itself.

The engine/box was dropped and this is the state of the engine as of today....

I asked for a rough valuation on the Corolla club and one member said £1500 :yelrotflmao:,that's an insult to be honest, most seem to think around the £4k mark though.

As far as i know there is only one other 3s-gte Corolla in the UK of this marque, and it's definitely the only T-sport with this engine fitted.

Fensport sold their 4wd 650bhp Corolla and only got £7k for it, which i thought was peanuts for such an extreme car, it goes to show modified cars are only worth what someone is prepared to pay for it.

I don't know, what do you guys reckon she's worth? It will be for sale eventually, because i'm a Mk1 Mr2 boy, Rollas aren't for me.

snowtigger
07-10-2012, 12:12
whats it worth well a standard 02 plate must be about 1.5k then your time and materials plus engine bits so about the 3 to 4k i would have thought.

i know what your on about being a mk1 mr2 boy even my other half wants me to get the sherwood up and running so she can enjoy mk1 ownership i think the club has converted her.

It's always the way with nodded cars they never sell for what an owner/builder would value it at.

I'd hate to think how much I've lost over the years, but it's something you have to accept if you have the modifying bug.

Amazing conversion, this one, Paul. The bay looks great, like it was meant to be, only better.

Well that's a job i never want to do again! My engine harness was way too short to reach into the cabin, so i had to cut and extend every ECU wire by about 30" including shielding the important knock/Dizzy and Lambda signal wires..... finally after 4 hours of soldering, shrink wrapping and stripping wires back it's done...

http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2012/10/178.jpg

I've even managed to keep the colour coding correct for each wire, this just needs taping up now.

Added more trinkets around the engine bay, i hear a TRD oil cap is good for 20bhp.

http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2012/10/179.jpg

Blitz caps and more silicon tubing, it's turning into a whores handbag....

http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2012/10/180.jpg

With any luck next week i'll be able to do some actual wiring things up, that wire extension was a killer job.

The Mk1 V8 is finished, it drives and i have nothing mechanical left to do, proved it could be done, mission accomplished , i'll paint it one day.

I made good progress yesterday with the Corolla wiring, integrating two ECUs to make the engine and dash functions all work....

Wiring now 50% completed, it is taking time to get this right, not easy keeping both the 3s-gte ECU and 2zz-ge ECU happy and also getting the dash clocks to work properly but so far i have sorted temp gauge, oil pressure light, battery warning light and check engine light.

Injectors are powered up, Ignitor/coilpack powered, 3s-gte ECU powered up and getting the correct speed signal from the car, charging circuit done and circuit opening relay wiring completed.

Left to do...

Tacho signal, this will either be very simple or a bit of a nightmare, but it will be working eventually.
Chargecooler pump wiring
Radiator fan wiring
Boost gauge fitment/wiring
Starter circuit wiring
Main power cable wiring/feeding the cars fusebox with power

http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2012/12/1.jpg

We also managed to sort the battery relocation today, the only viable location for it was the far left corner of the boot, Jay made a new battery tray for it and a means of clamping it securely, then the boot trim was carefully cut out around the battery. It needs a cover making for it which i will do once the conversion is complete, i'll make it out of spare boot carpet so the battery is totally hidden.

snowtigger

Well it has taken quite a lot of Saturdays and bank holidays to build but the 3s-gte Corolla now runs.... as per usual horrible sound quality on the iphone mic, i've all but given up trying to get a decent video out of it, this engine sounds worse on the video than any other! In reality it is lovely and quiet.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZyFz3f-s1M0

Toyota are twats, they ran a lot of the chassis wiring stuff through the 2zz engine harness, which of course is no longer there, so i have had to get other systems working myself. Still to do is to sort the EMPS (electric power steering), fit a new radiator (this one is shot), new BOV needed (this one has a split diaphragm) and fit rad fan/wire it up.

Just looking at your battery relocation Paul and that is where Holden put the battery in their stock 6ltr V8s
Engine bay has no room for it

Paul Woods
23-12-2012, 09:22
Thanks chaps, nice to know Paul!

I have my work cut out getting the EMPS to work again, it relies on signal input from the old 2zz ECU, which relies on sensor input from the old 2zz engine, which of course isn't there.

The main problem is the EMPS is expecting a tacho signal, the 2zz gets this from the crankshaft pickup sensor on NE+ and NE- , now on Mk3 V6 swaps i get around this by using the 1mz's NE+ signal, and the tacho etc all work.... however there is no crank sensor on a 3s-gte, instead it relies on the dizzy for signals, one of those signals was NE which counts engine revolutions, so i was half hoping this would do to feed into the 2zz ECU as a trigger signal, but it did not work... i suspect a completely different type of signal.

I have a Dakota SG-8 unit on the way, this should convert the 3s-gte ignitor based signal into one that either the 2zz ECU or the T sport clocks will understand, hopefully then the EMPS will work.

Failing that i'm going to have to retro fit a crankshaft sensor and trigger wheel onto the 3s-gte to keep the 2zz tacho signal correct.

Not easy!

Goldy
23-12-2012, 14:11
Doesn't the tacho signal come off the back of the clocks on the 3SGTE or am I thinking of the speed signal?

Paul Woods
23-12-2012, 14:47
Yes that's the speed signal, the 3s-gte tacho signal comes from the ignitor, so i need to convert that signal with the Dakota unit, even then i'm not 100% sure it will work, we shall see.

Goldy
23-12-2012, 20:04

Just realised how long ago the last update was, i've grabbed the odd day here and there on the car since xmas, the tacho and power steering now work, i found a missing earth for the clocks that used to terminate on the 2zz cylinder head.... which of course i removed.... so thanks Toyota for earthing the clocks in the most stupid fucking place you could.

I retro fitted a Mk3 crankshaft pickup sensor and cog onto the 3s-gte crank pulley and this now sends the correct tach signal to the original 2zz ECU, which then decodes and sends another signal to the dash and PS ECU.... anyway all working now.

I've sinced lowered the car 40mm too...
Early testing has confirmed it absolutely flies, a little tricky putting all that power down, it torque steers like mad and is going to need better rubber up front, perhaps an ARB upgrade, but when you do get the launch right and it hits full boost it's extremely rapid.

Video coming soon.
