View Full Version : Gearbox confusion

Hi all

Part of the Spring work I'm doing on my car is to convert my NA gearbox to turbo spec for two reasons. First to get an LSD and second because my exhaust was designed for a box with an intermediate drive shaft so it's a bit close for comfort on the NA setup with the suspension in droop.

Now, I've bought a 'turbo' gearbox, shafts, etc and when buying it checked in the driveshaft holes to make sure I could see a bar running across. I thought this was how you determined that the box has LSD. It had, so I was happy.

However, on getting the old box out of my car, supposedly an NA box and therefore non-LSD I noticed that this one also had a bar running across the diff.

So now I'm confused. Do I have two LSD boxes? Or two non-LSD boxes? If not, which one has the LSD?

Cheers, Chris

The turbo box has LSD if it has the bar, the NA box does not have LSD if it has the bar, complete opposites.

The bar/no bar visual inspection is not a 100% guarantee of LSD, i've seen all types of diff with/without bars/holes/any shape you like.

You just have to take the sellers word for it. If you turn one driveshaft the other should turn the same direction but this doesn't always work either because a Torsen type diff will appear to be "open" when doing this test.

Thanks guys.

The gearbox came from Fizzy and he seems to know what he's talking about, so no concerns there. My main annoyance was that it seemed I already had an LSD, although the car certainly didn't drive like it had one I never tried the wheel test so couldn't be 100% sure. It would upset me somewhat if I've dropped the engine out for nothing!
