View Full Version : Which clutch for SW20 N/A to 3VE-FE??

Looking for advice so I don't get the wrong one. Saw somewhere that the standard MR2 Mk2 clutch and pressure plate wouldn't be man-enough for the job. Naturally will replace before mating up the gearbox to camry engine. All suggestions welcome (especially if you can recommend a good source).

Slightly off topic, came across some chat about the SW20 N/A gearing, questioning about the suitability of ratios to 3VZ-FE, would like to get the lowdown, whats the story?

Cheers

Mmm, wondering if this would fit, or be practical for road use:

It should be ok as long as it's a turbo box and flywheel your fitting it to mate as the 3vz is only just over 200bhp like the 1mz with a sc 285 with mods so you should be ok.

My rpm max puke clutch to give you an idea is rated over 400bhp+ and has a torque of over 325lbft for the 2gr swop.

I keep thinking is there a market for some one to buy a load of fidanza flys and clutches imported from the states.

nah, mine is just an SW20 Box, and I'll be hooking up to the stock 3VZ-FE (to which will be bolted the Fidanza flywheel)

Then you need the caldina or six puck clutch for an na box as the turbo will not fit the na box splines wise, and a turbo pressure plate to provide the clamping on the fidanza.

Do a search on here for caldina as some one found the fit and are pretty good.

The thread "Possible improvement for clutch with 3vzfe and na gearbox" is interesting incl mention of Caldina clutch, confusing in places. Wonder if that's going overboard, and something off the shelf closer to home would work straight out of the box. I'm assuming the NA clutch and pressure plate would go straight onto the 3VZ-FE and Fidanza fly no prob, and just need to locate the equivalent uprated NA clutch plate and clutch (if such a thing exists).

From my reading only the turbo pressure plate fits the fidanza I could be wrong but that's what I interrupt from all the reading I've done.

Aha, that seems to be the critical bit, and I understand now, especially after reading Paul Woods' comment:

"The Mk2 NA disc is absolutely fine when used with the turbo pressure plate/turbo flywheel combo.Having said that if you can get the Caldina plate to make use of the full diameter then that's great."

Which means I'm going to need to source a turbo pressure plate and nice new "na" clutch plate to slide onto the na gearbox (S54), and the turbo pressure plate (as you say snowtigger) should bolt right up to the 3VZ-FE Fidanza flywheel.

I got a Exedy Caldina one but they are hard to get even in Oz, apparently lots of Caldinas are imported to New Zealand so maybe one of our Kiwi friends should organise a group buy as it is the best option for S54 and Turbo flywheel/Pressure plate combo

Interesting, but I'm going to try and source an updated SW20 MK2 NA friction plate and not bother with the Caldina, the contact area won't make much difference. Will go for a mr2 turbo/st205 pressure plate

next question- which release bearing????

How about this:

Uprated Clutch Plate

Toyota MR2 - Drivetrain
MK2, 2.0 GT, Rev 2, SW20, 3S-GE
MR2-2 NA CERRAMETALIC DRIVEPLATE

Cerametallic - 4 Paddle driveplate, high performance friction material, and a heavy duty sprung centre hub.

Note 1: To make a complete clutch kit, please also purchase release bearing and uprated cover.
Note 2: This clutch provides a fairly progressive engagement, making it driver friendly. Wear rate can be high, so it is not suitable for cars that spend all day in heavy traffic.
Note 3: Cerametallic friction material can withstand more heat and is more suitable for competition use and repeated drag type launches. For heavy traffic use please purchase an Organic Driveplate.

Maybe the 4 puck not totally suitable for road use.

then add: MR2 turbo clutch kit and dump the friction plate: TOYOTA MR2 2.0 Turbo 16v 6/90-00 New 3 Part Clutch Kit

You will need the N/A release bearing as this fits to the S54 box

I know where I can get a pretty sharp price on clutch kits...will the caldina release bearing fit the S54?if so I can ring and get a price of the "off the shelf caldina kit" tomorrow...dont mind doing a bit of a run around if its an easy option for you guys:)

That'd be handy Sketchy, thanks! reckon they might shift some stock if you get good info on here

well most of the oem kits I have bought off them have been a fair bit cheaper than most(like $100 cheaper than the rest, for the N14 gti I replaced about 9 months ago,and they included the flywheel grinding also for that price, unlike the others who either couldnt machine it,or charged extra for it, it was about $250 for the kit and grind)

its only a phone call, anything special I need to ask for?gt-t...or 4wd N/A?..or 2wd?..as there are a few options to worry about

the 2wd that has the s54 would be the ideal candidate Im guessing?just wanna make sure.

Hi Sketchy from memory it is the caldina gt st215 20 spline disc that you got to ask for

$275NZ including local tax, might even do a deal on multiples of 5 or more...15-16kg per kit.so its a 80kg parcel to send to woodsport, or somewhere similar????

or 136GB, plus freight....in your uk money, for a 9 1/2 inch plate, matching cover and release bearing.

started getting an idea on freight prices too....may not be pretty:(..unless I ship 1 at a time

as it turns out he cant do them at this stage, his list price was good....the 9 1/2 inch 20 spline plate is rare even here(meaning expensive), and not on the shelf. he is gonna make some enquires and get back to me tomorrow morning my time. most likely I would be getting them ex japan....and with a bigger price tag...:(

gave BNT a call after I found that out...realease bearing 79.80+clutch plate 349.90+cover 298.90*add local tax 1.125.....$922.13NZ per kit...OUCH

From memory I paid about $160 aus for my Exedy plate and it came from Sydney, if there is enough interest I could look into getting some more
