V8 ... The Beginning!

Some of you may know me from over on MR2OC.co.uk and here of course. I've spent the past year building my V6 MR2 which after many a setback is in the final stages of having a TRD Scion Supercharger fitted. I have designed the bracket to fit it to the block myself and am nearly there with that. By all means take a look :)

This car is all but done, fully resprayed, polybushed, HSD's, full leather retrim, Speedhuts, Enkei's etc.

http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2010/08/76.jpg

I've suffered con-rod bearing failure, then in prep for the SC i fitted Copper headgaskets that Boostedcamry helped me with (Gabe) .... big mistake!! They're notoriously difficult to seal and lasted 600 mile before leaking - that's with ARP's....! I now have 3vz MLS gaskets ready to fit supplied to me from Rogue Motorsport - if you're interested in a set, contact Patrick :thumbup

http://www.mr2oc.co.uk/forums/125/118180.html

Anyway i had been doing a complete nut and bolt rebuild on my 93 JDM turbo also but due to personal problems my heart is no longer in the car. Just before it fell off axle stands it looked something like this...

http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2008/12/2.jpg

and the engine detailed to this standard

http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2009/06/139.jpg

The turbo engine will be sold off to part pay for this build but have started parts collection already.

Justinswidebody's progress has spurred me on to make a start.

So far i have bought a Link G4 Extreme ECU - supremely good bit of kit which i hope 2BarTuning will help with

Just waiting on delivery of my gearbox, flywheel, clutch and driveshafts from an Audi 2.5tdi 6-speed

Delivery of the engine was a week ago and unwrapped it today (like a kid in a candyshop). It's a 2002 54k miles 4.3litre Lexus 3UZ-FE. Complete with A/C pump, starter, alternator etc etc

http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2010/08/79.jpg

Finally, no point going quick without being able to stop. So have bought a full set of Porsche 996/Boxster Brembo calipers

http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2010/08/80.jpg

http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2010/08/81.jpg

Wheel wise will see some seriously wide VS-XX 18" action. with 9s on the front and 11s on the rear!

http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2010/08/82.jpg

The purist in me, hence going the Toyota engine route, is dictating that i do a full-on MC8R style car including rear chassis stretch.

Progress will be a little slow to start with as i have the headgaskets to swap on the V6 along with completing another V6 swap for a friend.

Awesome, looks like the quality of the build will be top notch too going on your other builds.

Look forward to seeing this progress...

Whhooaaa, thats a beast of a motor indeed... When I done a little bit of research into using a 1UZ-FE, then only feasible way I could see without resorting to drastic chassis modifications, was to install transverse, but use a shorter gearbox adapted to fit the engine. A M66 (or M65 if you can find one) Volvo / Ford gearbox is only ~12-13" long, would handle the torque, and should allow (in theory) just enough room with a small amount of chassis rail 'tweaking' to fit... The passesnger side drive shaft would need to be looked at (very short) but other than it might work...

Good luck, promises to be an exciting build!

Ross

Not even close Ross! The baby ain't going in transverse! It will be a true North/South longitudinal conversion with no cabin inteferance either :D

In hand Nik. It will be 11's and 9's for sure :) The body look i'm aiming for is a tamer version of this...

http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2010/08/85.jpg

Side scoops will stay. Overall proportions to be similar. Wide front arches, mr2 pop-up lights (with millentubby quad style conversion), mr2/border hybrid front bumper, custom rear but wont look dissimilar to this aside a Bomex drift wing...

Oh ... and definitely side exit exhausts!

Nice one Dan good luck with the build.

One request, don't let it sit on an engine stand for too long!!

25-08-2010, 22:42
good luck that man:)..as they say in the hot rod world "there's no replacement, for displacement"

I was thinking something just like this, as a project to follow the limo.....although I was gonna look at a 6/71(no point being shy if its sticking out the top), or turbo's in the former wheel arches;).

are you going to tube chassis the rear end? or "cut and shut" the rear, and just extend the rails back with some heavy wall tube(also an extra bar from the tub to the strut tops to stop the colapse)? or even borrow from F1 and make the engine a "stressed member"?

all 3 of those are options, which way were you thinking of heading?...or do you have something else in mind?.

Ill be watching:D

Something i have been giving some .... well actually a lot of consideration!

The MR2 rear subframe will be scalloped out to allow the Audi gearbox past. That we all know. Off the back edge i will run a frame to support the back end of the gearbox, this will be made from a light gauge tube - probably 30mm OD x 1.6mm wall or something like that. off the front of the subframe i will run another set of pipes, slighty heavier (40mm od x 2mm wall) to support the engine. These will tie into the front-lower cross member (behind the fuel tank) and also the sides where the engine is hung from at present.

This will give me a complete running gear drop out "cassette" so will mean a few bolts and pipes and out she comes in one lump!

As for the body chassis mods.....

chop the car off behind the rear cockpit firewall and leave the C-pillar in place along with the two main chassis rails. Extend these rails using a custom formed section from 3mm sheet (can do this stuff at work). Add in a couple more light gauge box section braces (50mm x 50mm x 1.5mm wall) then some light gauge tube diagonal (probably 40mm OD x 1.5mm wall), relocate the strut towers and there you go .... bob is your mothers brother! :D

Quite easy really

I'm not the best at freehand sketching but here goes..

My subframe intentions...

http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2010/08/100.jpg

Inspiration taken from some of the MR2 Underbraces you see floating around...
(A) - are the engine mounting points
(B) - are the gearbox mounting points
(C) - will be a pair of new points on each side chassis rail
(D) - will bolt to the front crossmember between engine bay and fuel tank
(E) - will be a modded rev1 subframe

Hope that explains it better :)

Using the engine as a streesed member is a viable alternative but only if it's rigid mounted. I'd prefer to keep some comfort with it :)

Nice, I love a cracking plan! I'd cut your rear of just infront of the strut towers, and get another rear cut from a scrap yard from door and back and use to extend with.
Then get a wbk and chop/stretch/widen the fuk out of to get a "MC8R" look...if you need a smoothened border/wbk front like mine to work out from, i could have my bodyguy to slap some fg in the mould and make you one. would save you quite a bit of ground work as it is allready widened to trd wbk width..

Keep it up mate :)

Dan, I doff my cap to you for taking this on!

Been given a simple solution to the parking brake issue by using the Porsche 4-pot rear calipers...

As used on Astons and Jags so i'm told...

And a bargain too - should save me a shed load trying to re-engineer the MR2 hub to take Supra integral drums.

Thanks for the offer Wayne. May take you up on that offer even if only to do a practice run on making the new rear chassis. Other than that I'm quite happy to cut up the Turbo :D

Update time.

No steel cutting done yet. I keep sketching little bits out here and there and have quite a file of little ideas here and there. :)

Anyway; for the build so far my shopping list grows and grows!
I have bought;

- Link G4 Extreme ECU (with connectors)
- Audi 6sp gearbox
- Audi driveshafts
- Audi dual mass flywheel
- 3uz 4.3 V8 with complete loom
- Porsche 997 4pot front calipers
- Porsche 997 4pot rear calipers
- Mechanical spot calipers (handbrake)

Yes but not the purple TuRD John :) .... some black tubby TuRD pup he picked up cheap a while back. All in all it could be made into a decent car but there's just bits of it i don't like ..... like no door handle for instance - pain in the ass! As Mick said to me, the kit is all blended in so must be a not so good fitting one.

Nod
15-12-2010, 12:16
Tach should work OK as the Link can scale the tacho output to suit. You will need to bypass a ballast resistor in the tacho head for this to work though. I'm making a box to convert the abs pulse to a speedo pulse for a chap with an MR2, I have the bits to make two, I'll let you know how it goes.

Wow now theres a shopping list! Cant wait to see this come together!

If i remember correctly Johhnys build used the same engine, got over 400bhp out of it before it crashed. Smart move to not do everything at once, better to drive it once in a while so you can actually enjoy it. After 2 years of (on and off) working on my build i bought a second mk2 v6 just to get the feeling back:)

Not quite hmmmm. Johnny's engine (now with a TB member in Cyprus i do believe ;) ) was lacking something mine has..... 2 Cylinders

Johnny's was a Sea2sky built 5vz engine (3.4litre V6 from USA) this is a 3uz-fe .... 4.3litre V8 from a Lexus LS430 :) . In natural tune these are 290hp. a good exhaust will see it over 310hp. Adding the Link ECU should see a few more ponies also.......

..... that's before i whap the M112 on there!

hp is for bragging down the pub .... torque is where it's at and this engine has it in bucket loads.... 441 N/m (325 ft/lb) of torque at 3400 rpm that should do it :)

that rail at the bottom for the fire wall is an absolute prick to mangle

if you can cut it down closer to the base of the strut cavity(where its almost parallel, about 8 inches back from the bulkhead) you will find it much easier as its only like 3 or 4 skins involved and you will be able to spigot rails into it easier;)...when I cut the front shell of the limo I spent an hour or so either side sectioning it out to get the saw/chisel/grinder in to get it removed so I could make it flat

dgh938peg
23-12-2010, 08:14
I shall probably leave those two main chassis rails in place and work off them as a datum sketchy. The idea being to drill the spot welds out on all attaching panels and carefully cut the panel work off. I prefer this to making a complete spaceframe rear end as i'll know where my starting points are plus they're tied into the rest of the car thus making them a very strong attachment point.

I know they're only 1.6mm think sheet steel but from cutting mr2big's chassis up for his Auto v6 i could see they're very well put together with ribs all over the place which makes them inherently strong :)

Do you know ... of all the places i should not forget i have a project thread up it should have been here.!!

Anyway, as announced on Nod's page - it is now full steam ahead on the V8. Basically, I have the use of our old 12'000sq ft factory until somebody rents it from us. Meaning that while the space is available i need to crack on and make best use of it. This has put the V6 on hold (though i may get the odd evening on it) as, while it is available, the space is too good to turn down. So ... from where i left off...

To be honest, i know some of you guys frequent MR2OC but i forget that projects are hidden behind Full Membership - sorry :)

..........

Rear hubs and shafts sorted...
Need to make hybrid MR2 outers with Audi Inners - using the Audi shaft - PW to advise on the easiest method here though i believe one of the Audi Shafts is a direct fit

Offsets i am not 100% sure of so will need to measure what i have got but the fronts definitely need some chunky spacers. I have a set of 3" studs so may employ them opposed to hubcentric spacers.

Hoping by the end of the weekend i will have some tyres to sit these baddies on (only very cheap part worns). I took this option to ensure i am happy with the look of the tyre. The fronts should be pretty cool with similar stretch to Gaz!'s rears. But the rears are another issue - beyond the realms of what i know of tyres..

Plus of course offering the rim a bit of protection and when it gets to shaping bodywork gives something to work to in a practical sense.

the good news is that as some of you know, my company are moving to a larger facility. We own the one we are in at present and, until it is leased, my boss has allowed me to use the empty shop to work on the V8 :th: Shall keep me busy for a few saturdays!

.....................

been bored at work today so playing with AutoCAD. Did a trace around of a side on MR2 shot i took a while back, a little stretch here, larger wheels there, bit of wing there, change the intakes et voila!

http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2013/06/357.jpg

(not to sure on the front as it's a bit of a mashup for now. but i don't think it looks out of proportion. This is a 300mm wheelbase lengthen and 150mm car lengthen.

..................

Been thinking about the chassis mods in my spare moments at work. There's a guy on the US boards doing a 1UZ swap with chassis stretch on a similar vein to me. He's used what is effectively 50mm x 50mm x 4.5mm thick wall box section to make a spaceframe rear chassis. I was of the opinion, at the time, it was a little 'belt and braces' approach. What i have read about the following car has confirmed it.... :th:

Friends of mine on the book of faces may remember me posting this one....
http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2013/06/358.jpg
It's an Ultima GTR with a custom alloy block Chevvy V8, custom crank, custom pistons, custom cams, custom heads.... You get the idea; it's pretty custom! Importantly, it churns out 982hp (at the fly or wheels who cares - the power to weight is double that of a Veyron and is street legal)The build pics are here http://www.kenson.nu/Ultimabilder/photo2115.htm

He and his friend built two at the same time, his friend opted for the Lexus V8 (not sure if its the 4.0, my 4.3 or the 4.7 but is inconsequential) and 2 hoofin' great turbos and a similar 1000hp...

Right... where am i going with this..?

Take a look at a bare Ultima Chassis...

http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2013/06/360.jpg

There's nothing in it beyond a 40mm tube or box section...!

http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2013/06/361.jpg

Just going on how tight the radius is on the box section, I'd guess nothing more than a 2mm wall.

On that basis i have just ordered 12m of 40mm x 40mm x 3mm wall box section and 12m of 38mm x 2mm wall ERW tube. It'll sti here at work (with the shell) until I'm able to tackle it.

My tyre gamble has paid off. The fitter has confirmed the 99p rear is legal so that's a plus. :th: .. Had one front & one rear fitted today; all I could fit in the Beemer!

Anyway ... Some magnanimous pic whorage now :D

Stretch on the fronts; 9's with 245/35/18

...............

Well, in prep for getting the chassis ready I've been chopping up MDF!

Anyway, the plan is to waterjet cut two pieces of 12mm alloy & weld them together this will be just as accurate & save a fortune on machining. So it began...

Audi box
http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2013/06/342.jpg

V8 block
http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2013/06/370.jpg

And never the twain shall meet - adapter required...

Cut a square of MDF. Drill a hole to suit a socket that is also a tight fit ofer the input shaft
http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2013/06/371.jpg

Pencil in & chop out

http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2013/06/381.jpg

I'll use this to couple the engine & box while making the chassis :D

................

Just helped pack Dan off to drop off some stuff for this project:
http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2013/06/382.jpg
...and to clear some space in here:
http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2013/06/383.jpg
(Poor Kermit.)

He will probably kill me for saying this, BUT I know people have offered to help with man-power on this one and he is too man to ask (in spite of craving a manicure)... Any got free couple of hours to help? Will get him to post or PM dates...

...................

So yep, small progress today. But some stuff has to be done to enable other things to take place..

Today, I checked the fit of hubs, discs, calipers & wheels
http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2013/06/344.jpg

So here's the rear fit...
http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2013/06/384.jpg

http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2013/06/385.jpg

With a 15mm spacer I have this much clearance
http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2013/06/386.jpg
So will reduce to a 10mm spacer in the interests of not making the car too wide lol!

Rachel seemed to think my fitting method was amusing...
http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2013/06/387.jpg

Next the fronts...
http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2013/06/388.jpg
Which gives me superb caliper clearance with a 15mm spacer again but...
http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2013/06/389.jpg
With this bolted in here I get this...
http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2013/06/390.jpg
Which means a 25mm (preferably 27mm spacer on the ass).. Which I had kind of figured.

The other option would be to shift the barrels about making the inner 1/2" narrower & the outer 1/2" wider but that's for another time. For now it'll be spacers.

So there we have it. Brackets sketched out for the calipers, I know what width spacers I need to clear the calipers for definite and its a job ticked off the list :D

.....................

Emptied out all the parts I've accumulated in there over the years (which I need to get up for sale)

http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2013/06/391.jpg

And have her a scrub up

http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2013/06/392.jpg

That'll make it easier to mark out for cutting :)

..............

It's not something that has to be pretty but will need to be rigid and light. It does just that.
The rear picks up on the suspension top plates where the top mounts sit, the (4) subframe bolts and the (2) trailing arm bolts. What this means is, i can cut & extend as necessary and, once the engine & gearbox are mated to the subframe, use the subframe to position the new subframe mounting points ...... BREATHE .... Then, I can make/position all my new suspension points from the jig ... Seeeemples! :D

Can I be a tidgy bit cheeky and ask what your budget / spend is? Cos the more I read the more expensive it looks.

It's quite a contrast to stuff I knock out as its mostly quick and easy and done on the cheapo usually. Not that I'm skinty poos, I just enjoy seeing what I can get away with (or without!)

I've spent a lot more than usual on the 2GR build, because even I appreciate the fact that when you up your game a bit, you realistically need to spend more.

C.

Nothing cheeky about that Chris...

For example, the original Turbo rebuild I spent something in the order of £7500... only to lose love for it and break it... Looked like this.
http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2013/06/434.jpg (http://s169.photobucket.com/user/dgh938peg/media/engine/MR2Rebuild345.jpg.html)

So for the V8... Spends thus far..

Wheels £1050 (dont ask me how but it's true)
Tyres £92 (dont ask me how but it's true)
Brakes (Porsche 997) £350 (with new pads)
Discs F £130
Discs R £89
Coilies £580
ECU £1350
Engine £850!!!
Gearbox £350 (with fly, clutch & driveshafts)
ABS hubs & shafts £120 (for use with future racelogic T/C)
Mishimoto Rad £50
Cinqi Rad £48
Eaton M112 New £250
Jag C/C plenums £90
Alloy for adapter £60
Alloy for fly £40
Steel for fly £Free (making fidanza stylee)
Steel tube & box for chassis £52
Steel for jigs & fixtures £Free

That's everything i need to get the car cut, engine supported and rolling on all 4 wheels. I will however, need to factor in at a later date lots of fibreglass or CF to make the rear wings, boot et al. Plus of course paint....
(That said, the one thing we left behind at the old factory where the car is was our large screw compressor and 8m x 4m spray booth... That should make things easier/cheaper!)

Good plan, the lights on the road MC8 look gash (racers look a bit better). I would imagine they wouldn't be all that easy to recreate either. Been trawling Google images for pics as I'm sure I saw versions before with small projector lamps (single lamp on each side) which looked a lot better.

What's the plan for paint? Love the sponsor type schemes but it's a bit much on the road.

Spot on. My v8 is supposed to be budget, but that bigger motor requires better brakes, better cooling, which all cost money I didn't really anticipate.

I really like that you chose the 3uz, this build is going to be so cool.

To be honest Les (as PW has said previously), this sort of work is a massive undertaking. From convincing myself this was a good idea it has taken me more than 3 years to get to where I am now. Sketching things, researching, buying (lots of buying), checking & checking again.

The goal is to have it on track at Japfest next year. This will be reliant on several things; Use of the building I'm in (for gratis) for at least the fabrication stage, continuing help from club members, support & advice on the forums and the lovely Rachel (a) getting her hands dirty when she can and (b) helping out with the kids when she can't.

To be honest, the actual 'doing' stage of this project seems to be going rather well at present :)

Erm .. Not sure Chris..? I shall consult the voices in my head once they all stop arguing...

I'm concentrating on the subframe (a) because its easy to complete and (b) it's the datum for pretty much everything else. With it done and a known length of engine and gearbox, I can make my chassis rail extensions, mount the subframe and do the rest of the suspension.

Plus, because the engine and box are tied to the subframe it's a crucial item done for getting the whole thing supported...

Muwahahahaha!!

Thanks Marc - that's partly my aim. I did not want some kitcar esque look to the rear end. I want it to look - as close as I have the capability to make - as Toyota would intend. It may not be the lightest but should be pretty stiff.

Two people said I should chop off and space frame - I know now I made the right choice. Lets face it, at this stage - if it all goes wrong I can cut off and start again easily. It's only when panel work starts to be added that will get harder. The trick is to prove to myself the chassis is stiff enough before I get to that stage :)

Everything lines up nicely so today it has been silicone sealed together along with 6 countersunk screws on the engine side to secure it together.. 5 out of 6 studs penetrate BOTH pieces of 12mm alloy plate so i have opted NOT to weld in any way. I'd sooner rely on an M12 stud to secure it together than stand a chance of welding distortion.. :th:

The adapter plate is awesome, if the whole project's finished to this standard then it will be quite something.

Re the body mods mentioned on the other thread, have you thought of either a) some sort of moveable splitter at the front to be able to run it real low but still get over speed humps or b) some sort of raiseable (not risible) suspension (hydraulics/airbags) to achieve the same aim?

Agree that the shell probably does need to be dropped anyway to get the arches looking 'right'...how exactly do you plan on doing that, it's pretty major...?

@ John and Paul - thanks chaps..

@ Geoff.. It's really not an easy proposition at all to be honest. As I am rebuilding the rear suspension points in their entirety it has proven easier to do on the back but still not without challenge.

Firstly, to combat bump steer, tram lining and so on I have raised the subframe 25mm from the original mounting height. This has the effect of lowering the chassis 25mm. Anybody who has run a really low SW20 will know that there is only so low you can go on the back end with coil-overs before the strut touches the driveshaft, doing this will counter that to some extent also... So the same effect as using RCA's - which i will probably be using as well!

Next - the front end; this is where it gets a whole lot trickier! because the front will remain predominantly intact I am faced with raising the mounting points 25mm here within the original chassis - not such an easy thing to do.... Essentially there are (3) mounting points- 1 where the top mount bolts on, 1 where the trailing arm attaches and 1 where the main arm (that bolts to the ball joint) attaches. The trailing arm bracket bolts to the car so easy enough to whip off, chop down, reinforce and refit (that said i will probably remove, measure, laser cut and remake). The other two points are hard, fast weldments to the chassis and not all that easy to change. Those of you who've read AEK's V8 project will know he did much the same thing on his car so, it's not that it's impossible just a challenge...

But then, when you're throwing a V8 longitudinally into a chassis meant for a transverse 4-cylinder, raising the suspension points 25mm pales into insignificance really! :D

Whoooh...yes, lots of work there. I thought you might be sectioning the body like they did on the old hot-rods, or cutting around the perimeter and dropping the whole shell down over the floorpan. What's the plan for the steering column? Not being all that familiar with that part of the SW20 I wouldn't know if most of the movement can be taken up with the UJ's?

Is 25mm enough by the way? Looking at the pics of the racecar I would've thought you might need a little more, but I guess you've measured all that pretty thoroughly.

dgh938peg

So here with the studs in it.

Whipped the studs out and dropped the box back on ...

http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2013/09/348.jpg (http://s169.photobucket.com/user/dgh938peg/media/MR2-V8/3E90F764-1422-4930-9BA4-AD72D06A86A2-2435-0000038C93877217_zps2c9dc0e6.jpg.html)

Threw the studs back in - and here's where I am deeply impressed with myself - the studs wound straight back in, no tightness, nada :cool1:

Unfortunately, without my bloody ratchet straps at work, getting it horizontal with the fork-truck was a challenge.... But I managed it :D

Gratuitous pics time :)

The weight of the engine must be enormous over that of a stoke 3S engine right? What sort of shock and spring are you going for on the rear to compensate?

dgh938peg
24-09-2013, 13:52
erm..... I think it is probably not much different from a fully laden 3sgte to be honest. I have a 250kg electric crane in my man-cave which can just about lift a 3sgte and box (or 3vz with box).. However, when i lifted this out of the trailer it didn't even break a sweat, no sign of strain.

wiki page >>> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toyota_UZ_engine (no weights on it unfortunately)

So I reckon I am probably 15-20kg's heavier than stock though balance should be better...

Remember though, this is purely a (very expensive) engineering exercise. If it drives well it'll just be an added bonus.

A momentous day to be honest..!

Started with joining the two tubes beneath the engine mounts with a length of 1.5" tube.

http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2013/09/389.jpg (http://s169.photobucket.com/user/dgh938peg/media/MR2-V8/2ACF8FAF-5A6F-418B-8EB8-207C614A1A56-4539-0000068569300E4D_zps6df36f69.jpg.html)

Then fiddle the engine in place.... Boner idea leaving the subframe on

So swing that puppy in place :th:

http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2013/09/390.jpg (http://s169.photobucket.com/user/dgh938peg/media/MR2-V8/0A89CCCD-EEB4-4FBB-976D-C73ED23E3A96-4539-0000068576E9E07B_zpsc4b9c457.jpg.html)

Then subframe back on and the engine and box is now ATTACHED TO THE CAR

http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2013/09/391.jpg (http://s169.photobucket.com/user/dgh938peg/media/MR2-V8/E9FEA002-C25B-4792-9598-24EFD9663B70-4539-000006858A303987_zps2815ec52.jpg.html)

You can see my engine prop at the front end; this permitted me to allow for 5mm sag in the mounts.

http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2013/09/392.jpg (http://s169.photobucket.com/user/dgh938peg/media/MR2-V8/A1E43BA5-01B2-4B43-89E2-8966AF14BFFC-4539-0000068594336F5B_zps65bbaeb8.jpg.html)

Yum yum yum :D

http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2013/09/393.jpg (http://s169.photobucket.com/user/dgh938peg/media/MR2-V8/88491918-5731-4393-81DF-7D4EB2307FC5-4539-000006859E0937A9_zpsfa563541.jpg.html)

So then start on the engine mounts

http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2013/09/394.jpg (http://s169.photobucket.com/user/dgh938peg/media/MR2-V8/0254C6F2-42F1-4A85-B779-64A202D0A69D-4539-00000685A639079D_zps18a80749.jpg.html)

Complete the engine subframe.

http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2013/09/395.jpg (http://s169.photobucket.com/user/dgh938peg/media/MR2-V8/4B2644BB-BD6A-4479-B3C1-D6C035C80239-4539-00000685ADEF9AAD_zpsccafb711.jpg.html)

And here it is .... :yahoo: All hanging under it's own weight (the 5th prop at the back is purely because it's on the balance limit..

Chassis legs will be closed in Adam - yes the holes are for plug welding. I do not have access to a spot welder so have to make do with my "limited resources" (that's tongue in cheek ;) )

Wish it was the back broken but honestly the work required left to do is immense! It will be a challenge in itself to get it on track at Japfest in time.

Sheet metal work either side will be somewhat more "on-the-job" rather than pre-cut. Once way i have to meet up with existing wheel arch seams while making a void for exhausts, the other; the boot shut. Tops will be pressed from 2.5mm the wrapper will be 1.2mm - mirroring the materials used on the existing car. Given how they are formed, will be plenty strong enough :)

Super progress today ... Until I ran out of bloody gas!! :ranting:

Up at the new workshop today I took my top mount plates and tacked them between some heavy plate..

http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2013/10/97.jpg

Apply 1t of force and you end up with this..

http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2013/10/98.jpg

Repeat opposite hand and cut centre scrap out. Also fold several other bits

http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2013/10/99.jpg

Remove engine & refit jig

http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2013/10/100.jpg

Bolt top mount plates in situ
http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2013/10/101.jpg

Weld a small tag on to secure to the body

http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2013/10/102.jpg

Weld on wrapper..

http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2013/10/103.jpg

Promptly run out of gas as you start the 2nd!

http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2013/10/104.jpg

Still - great progress again and - if I can get a gas bottle sorted - will have the suspension back on next weekend maybe :)

Remember - these strut mounts sit 25mm higher than stock to lower the chassis by 25mm :th:

More pics of the wheels please, where did you source them from?

04-11-2013, 07:55
So will this car be show king, daily driver, garaged and never seen again or drag strip weapon??

Those wheels are unreal. Bet there's a grand plus in them!

dgh938peg
04-11-2013, 08:13
The bodywork plan is pretty simple... make it fit the wheels! :D
- Sard MC4 front
- Wider fabricated steel front wings
- Simple but wide skirt (much like the MC8)
- Huge intake (as per the MC8-R)
- Side exit exhaust (as per the MC8-R)
- Wider rear arches
- Keep the boot
- Big Gay Wing

The wheels as you all probably know are Work VS-XX which i bought from USA, an ET50 set of 8s and 9s. I have basically re-barrelled the 8s to make them 12s. Cannot remember who i bought the wheels from but come up regularly on this eBay trader (who i also got the new outers from) http://stores.ebay.com/jdmautohouse

In fact - he has several sets on there now ..

This is the front - with caliper mounted..

http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2013/06/388.jpg (http://s169.photobucket.com/user/dgh938peg/media/MR2-V8/0BC63BC4-711F-47BB-BAB9-92BD5C09B585-11746-00000F92180A418A_zps9e3b6ca2.jpg.html)

Not enough rim for my liking at the mo but are functional so can wait.

As for the cars' use ... not sure really. I'm not one for pomp and ceremony so unlikely to be a meticulously kept show car. I have said all along that I plan in it's first big outing being a track session at Japfest next year... Daily driver, it'll get driven - probably not daily but it will get driven :) .. drag strip - absolutely NOT what I am building this car for but that not saying it'll never see the strip ;) ... Just a car really, 4 wheels, 2 seats and a steering wheel :)

snowtigger
04-11-2013, 11:27
Come on its got to go up the strip at least once, then hill climb it or race it hell even drift it, a car like that has to see action on a circuit.

Those wheels do look lush though.

Then got the engine out - so i can finish off the structural stuff along with proceeding on with panels and the back end - and removed the intake plenum with the hope it can be reversed.

http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2013/11/119.jpg (http://s169.photobucket.com/user/dgh938peg/media/MR2-V8/D8B65C5C-61C6-4DD3-9DB5-210DCEFBCCEA-275-0000002933A266F0_zpsb9afb6e5.jpg.html)

I can make it work the stock way round but only have 3" of clearance. It's doable but I'd prefer to reverse it as there's more room at the back end.

Underside of the plenum carries the ACIS canister (or whatever they call it now) and the VSV - nothing to concern myself about relocating

http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2013/11/120.jpg (http://s169.photobucket.com/user/dgh938peg/media/MR2-V8/CEC63660-BA22-4EA7-89BC-ADD1CE27EE58-275-000000293F7C8080_zpseec5da4d.jpg.html)

Et voila!

The problems as a result are minor.
- Actuator for ACIS needs modifying
- fuel line linking the rails needs altering
- ACIS canister needs mounting.

All in all - extremely minor stuff. Considering I need to change out the throttle body. I'm ditching the drive by wire and in doing this I am told that I'll lose the TPS with it. My thinking was to adapt the current unit to take a throttle cable but will also need the TPS. So looks like I'll be welding a flange on for a different TB. :D

That plenum reversal really is sweet, same deal on the Audi engines but more stuff to modify on those, that will look awesome with the filter going backwards.

Nice work, i do love the reverse plenum look. Will save a lot of room too which is lucky!

Really looking forward to when the wheelarches go in at the new position. Going to be much easier to visualise then.

Are the rear arches etc going to be in steel like the plan for the front? Or are you moulding up in FRP?

dgh938peg
19-11-2013, 12:55
Right .. the wheel arches.

The dark lord has stepped in here; has sorted me out a set of FG flares for the job. So for the basic shape I will start with those then work back into the steel. It was the only possible way to craft what I actually need and want with what I have available. However, it will not look like a standard set of flared arches by the time it's finished - on that you can rest assured :)

Got half term week off. Spending part of it on Cornwall & a day or two in the beast! :D

^^^^^ What he said. I still love those tower struts, I always have a quick look when I wander onto the thread.

I think you should do something special when this is finished Dan, a sort of unveiling ceremony and make it an MR2 club night out.

Also, had a thought here. Rather than the ballache of reversing the entire fuel rail back around to the correct way, could you not just leave it as is with the reversed plenum, and change the loom so it fires the injectors correctly off the reversed rail?

dgh938peg
22-05-2014, 08:06
Correct Tommy, the fuel rail will be staying exactly how it is on the reversed plenum and I'll swap the loom around to suit. :)

Seeing the mc8 thread on imoc reminded me of this, is this a no go now or just mothballed awaiting some spare man cave time?

Customer I work for just bought a carrera gt4 convertible new model he's started selling Porsches, I wouldn't mind a red turbo 1985 convertible with wide arches with white leather and red piping the ultimate yuppy car says i, he says when you have the money I know we're that exact model is helps being northwest Porsche chairman as a customer lol

This is beautiful id take the same era turbo if i had loads of money.

Realistically ill end up going for a 996 c4s. 4wd is necessary round here in the winter and i can't afford a 17k car that's only useable 6-7 months of the year

snowtigger
20-02-2015, 12:32
996 are ridiculously cheap according to my customer it's what he buys sorts and sells, that bottom pic looks like his garage he has a gt4 gt3 two 996 convertible an rsr the very lite one with the green scaffolding inside he's just spent 6k on new turbos and inconel manifolds and titanium exhaust all specially coated in some weird and wonderfull coating to increase flow and decrease heat, all to go round the Nurburgring.

I've found his pictures of what a stripped/chopped shell looks like very helpful, the 1UZ is a longer engine than the LS3 and he seems to have quite a bit of space between bulk heads.

Hope he does finish it, to many V8 projects never get finished.

I had the opportunity to buy a Targa SC about 4 months ago, looking at the prices of them now in the UK I would have made a few bob if I would have bought it! Absolutely love them, this but in red or a turbo with the wide arches are my dream cars. One day! If the prices don't keep sky rocketing!

I've found it's best to get someone else to do it. Supra is being built by Lewis Rally Sport and Dyno Torque while the MR2 will be built by MK Auto Repairs and Turning. This in exchange for looms, Stand alone installs and mapping. :)
