Now is a good a time as any.

For me this is a very big moment, ive never had a swap thread before as KYT was pre TB :icon_cry:

KYT is dead, long live ZOMBIE !

Yes KYT is officially just a distant memory.
Well Si being the star he is has decided that i really should be back in a mk1.5 again and is getting ZOMBIE (KYTII) to a ready to wire state for me.
Si basically took ownership of my entire garage, KYT and KYTII after i decided i had had enough, what was i thinking?!

She has KYTs rev3 3S-GTE providing pushing power, with a ST205 Chargecooler keeping her honest with the added bonus of a ST205 ECU which hopefully means in the future possibilities of daughter boards and better maps.

All suspension components were blasted and powder coated last year by me before i went all pete tong.
New poly bushes all round.
Keri's superb alloy brakes up front.
Beautiful Borbet A's deep dish alloys 9 on the back and 7.5 on the front using Adams excellent alluminum spacers to line them up.

With regards to body work i plan to de-swage her all round, ZW frunk vent, boot lid and ZW/WS TD engine lid.
ZW/WS bolt on wide arches.
Mk1a nose with something in way of a new splitter but not sure what to go for yet, same goes for the rear.
I have toffers newly re-covered leather seats and door cards to go in.

I'm also planning on a full paint job to melt even the coldest hearts, i'm currently thinking a candy cobalt blue to show off her lines (though this will probably change over the next 6 months).

I am planning for this to be a winter project so expect her to be complete by JAE 2011!.

How fucking excited am i..??!!!??!!

[update 28-12-10]

no updates due to it being to damn cold out there, but did take the camera out. not very exciting but does give me some idea of where i'm at with bodywork/rust etc. door pillars are good, triangles are good, sills are good, arches i have cut off anyway so theyre good ;-)
the subframe and suspension arms were blasted and powdercoated and also polybushed.
generally she's pretty good, not as good as i had hoped but standing outdoors for a year hasn't had as much of an impact as i had feared. the only problem area is passenger side above windscreen and a small bit of re-welding drivers side front sill. a remedial fix has been done but this needs grinding down and re-doing..
the only major headache i have is paint removal..i would like to strip her back to the blue paint, anyone got any advice, i was thinking of just using thinners to get the black paint off, its flaking off anyway so am hopeful its going to be pretty easy. as for the rear wings i think i will probably nitromors these back to the bare metal.

well after a tiring day driving across the country with my friend brian james ;-) i met up at jeff's house to load zombie onto brian. then onto bsm's lock-up to get whatever bits i could fit in..fuck i forgot how sexy those borbetts are!!!!!
i've got a lot to do (or it seems a lot at the moment anyway) but just wanted to get this swap thread bumped with interest.

Hope you get this ready for summer if not Santa pod, definitely jae nod wink.
Lovely jubbly nik a very good base to put all those carbon goodies on her.

nik
25-12-2010, 17:01
so zombie is now up on axle stands in the temp workshop.
all the suspension arms and subframe were powder coated and a new set of polybushes fitted. all needs torquing up now.
will be wiring up next week and getting her started, before moving onto brakes..
then its onto bodywork..

ive been sat indoors in the warm today eating toblerone and drinking beer, so i decided to break out potatoeshop and mock up a new back end..
i have a eurosport rear end sitting in the garage doing nothing so i thought i could use it with a bit of modding..
this is what i conceive..basically its the eurosport back bit with a carbon diffuser inserted into the middle of it. would promote a new exhaust with rectangular tips sitting in the side bits..i also envisage it taking a chunk out of the rear bumper to break up that rather boring rear bumper line..
not too chavvy i hope!!

Be interesting to see it in the flesh if you do go ahead with it, oval exhausts would be interesting either side.
I must say I wasn't keen on a 458 until I saw one in the flesh that car is exceedingly low to the ground.

adamh
28-12-2010, 20:04
yup looks good in all the right areas, if i could add one to check also.. have a looksie under the rear light clusters behind the bumper bar that one caught me short on this mr2 build and the last even although the rear valence looked spoltess at the bottom. I have an issue also just above the driver on the screen, water comes through in drips in heavy showers .. i'll hopefully get that fixed when its sprayed

I wasn't criticising fella, just want to know the best way to get it off :-)

snowtigger
29-12-2010, 14:16
Industrial vapour blasting or dry ice, maybe faster than nitromors mate or rubbing and sanding.
If going for the media blasting you will need it etch or just primered as Quick as possible as soon as the metal is exposed it begins to rust unless you user por15 straight after.

One good thing if using vapour it just takes the paint off and doesn't distort the panels.

nik
31-12-2010, 16:31
possibly the bargain of the century..just bought this for £10 and only 5 miles down the road..http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=280606774345

refitted the blue doors and the blue bonnet.

nik
13-01-2011, 18:20
just a picture update today though a milestone has been reached.
all wiring finished, protected and tidied away, cant believe i'm actually going to have a boot this time!!

have ordered the following from mr.t;

2 x Long Throttle Body Bolts w/washer - T90119-08870
4 x Throttle Sock Bolts - T91511-B0825
1 x Throttle Sock - T17861-88480
1 x Accel. Bracket - T78024-88480
1 x Throttle Body Support - T17871-88480

that's all the bits needed to connect the st205 CC to the intake.

i was worried about the water outlet/inlet fouling on the 3s-gte water pipe knuckle as i had read somewhere it would but thankfully there is plenty of room..!

adamh
13-01-2011, 20:10
you have a boot!, not too worried about an access panel?

nik
13-01-2011, 20:46
no ads, if i need access i'll worry about that at the time but cant really see it being needed. would rather have a bit of luggage space :-)

nik
15-01-2011, 11:51
my parts arrived at mr.t's this morning

basically i have to replace the two aluminium throttle body bits shown in the first pic with a rubber throttle sock an new tb support bracket and a few extra bolts in order to connect the chargecooler to the intake. £110.98 for that little lot..:icon_confused: what's great is they have them in stock which isn't normally the case with 3s-gte bits.

nik
15-01-2011, 18:04
today i mounted the chargecooler with my new parts.
mounted the mk1 expansion bottle.
fitted anything else that needed fitting.
the only thing left to do engine-wise is get rid of a code54 being thrown buy the st205 ECU. this is because im not running the standard CC water pump so the ECU thinks its not working hence the fault code.

stratup with all the gubbins fitted..

adamh
18-01-2011, 21:56
i see it but i didn't really hear it that much, i heard a little whisp like a silent fa*t !. you have a long list of to do's?

nik
19-01-2011, 09:45
hi adam, got a fairly long list but nothing too scarey.
yesterday i hung my bargain (£10 with delivery mileage only) impreza exhaust now i can snot together two bits of mild. will tack together the mid section today hopefully and get it sent to woodsport for proper welding!
1707

just for you adam here's a list in no particular order.
1. buy mk1b disks, paint 22v clappers to finish brakes, bleed and check.
2. buy clutch slave cyl hose, fit and bleed.
3. fit st205 pump, run coolant hoses, fit CC rad, fill and bleed.
4. fit new ali coolant rad in new position (when it arrives).
5. fit interior.
6. make battery tray in frunk.
7. repair area above windscreen.
8. fit impreza rear lights.
9. lots of body work, custom rear end, custom front end and arches.
10. off to paint!!!

thats probably not an exhaustive list (no pun intended) but off the top of my head this morning.

snowtigger
19-01-2011, 10:22
Exhaust looks nice will be a great sound when finished, people will think oh here comes another scoobie/mitzushitesiz and will be surprised when this little mr2 comes whizzing and farting past.

Will it all be done for the pod in June ?

I reckon with your talent and this great thing that is tb, you will have all the mechanicals finished well in advance just bodywork takes ages.

Are you ever going to do a carbon mk1a bumper skin as well?

nik
19-01-2011, 10:49
june? bloody hope so!! even if shes running with primer..
i am hopefully doing front and rear bumpers in fg, something rigid enough to get rid of or at least replace the bumper bars. wish i still had those moulds now..!!

just a parts update today.

my new radiator arrived, its slightly smaller but thicker cored over stock so should be fine. i went smaller as this isnt going to be sitting in stock position, which reminds me, must put the oven on today and bake me a zombie frunk vent! just waiting for my st205 pump to turn up then i can get the cooling side of things finalised.:eusa_pray:

had a big box arrive from woodsport this morning as well.

Reading through your posts between the lines you sent your zorst to Paul to weld up the pipe, unless he's sent you a flat pack mk1 in KITT form (see what I did there) lol.

nik
25-01-2011, 14:58
ooh no afraid not..the box from paul is not exhaust related, sorry ;-)
okay so had a few hours this afternoon whilst the oven was baking carbon pie, fab'ed up a frame for the CC radiator and fan.
also made a template from ali which will channel the incoming air up into the radiators and out the frunk lid.

this weekend saw the completion of the Charge Cooler install with st205 pump. Got a bit confused during the wiring up as the two reference diagrams i was working from contradicted each other..! never mind it's all in and working though i do need to address a bubble trap at the pump which i have installed in the boot. No big deal.
i also welded in a battery tray in the passenger footwell, plenty of room when your girlfriend is only 5 foot and 7 stone!! very please how its all turned out actually. will put pics up tomo.

nice work. i like the placement of the battery . check out the upturned lip also that's another little mod . bonnet always lifts.

nik
13-02-2011, 11:21
thanks adam..
the flap will be more vertical and not as big, think gurney flap. its more to aid the operation of the vent than help reduce lift.
photo update coming today.

nik
13-02-2011, 12:35
okay so more pics.

pretty much finished with this part of the swap now.
new bulkhead welded up, seam sealed and painted.
tested it last night, all bled and working. that's the cooling side finished.
chargecooler plumbing done and bled and working, really impressed as the top of the CC rad stays uber cool but will fit a heatshield or wrap just to avoid heatsoak.

1742

didn't really know what to do about bleed valves for both rads so went to wickes and bought some cock taps (ooer) and some braided hose with compression glands on the end and they work a treat for a few quid spent.

1743

1745

got my steel from jetix and had a go at fabricating the exhaust, welds arent pretty but im chuffed with what i managed to do (gasless MIG).

1740

1741

started refitting interior too.
found the carpets were very wet passenger side, basically it was all slimey underneath and can only assume that all the silica gel packets that were in her to keep her dry had actually done the opposite and created this weird non evaporating slime. she's been in the tent since arriving here so must have been wet before i picked her up.

1744

snowtigger
13-02-2011, 16:20
Always put the silica gel packs in a Tupperware container,so if they burst or pick up to much moisture it goes into the tub and not all over the carpet.

i need a new clutch flexi as it's not in my selection of spares from KYT :icon_confused:

fitted a bleed on the cc pump outlet pipe so no more air trap

apart from bleeding the clutch i don't need to get under her again for a while so i may stick the borbets on her tomo and see how she looks.

coming along nicely so soon it will be time to start the bodywork! :icon_mrgreen:

Can't remember which version it is but if you're going for a clutch hose then there is one that has the correct male/female ends so you don't need to make up an adaptor.

Looking good Nik. Well in.

suspension and brakes all finished apart from new rear hoses and a bleed.
fitted a seat and the steering wheel and felt great sitting in a mk1 again even if it was to move 1 foot forward and 1 foot backwards a few times!!
anyway here are the borbets to give me some idea of how far back to cut the arches. the geometry isn't anywhere near yet hence why they're sitting a bit skewy.

not much to report today, had to remove the offside 22v caliper and strip it down as it was sticking.
full bleed of all four corners.
also painted the 22v calipers and rear ARB, which also threw up a problem with the exhaust! so had to remove the scooby exhaust and remount it 20mm lower to avoid catching the ARB. this also screws up my plans for the rear end too so ive got to rethink that too now.
just before packing up for the day i grabbed the rear wing that i will be using and took a few pics.
what do you think? stock position and approx height to keep the stock look but just a bit more aggressive looking i reckon.

also mocked up the paint color i have chosen in potatoshop. its actually RAL5012 a standard flat color which i have fallen for, i think it looks great with the alloys and ali wing, once i get the wide arches on in carbon grey to match the boot lid and roof..

it is quite bright adam yeah, its not an mr2 colour stock colour though..i just toyed with a few choices and after i painted something with RAL5012 enamel paint i fell in love..its actually a strange colour in that its a light blue but its bright and somewhere between loud and calm, like i say its odd..but with the aluminium and dark grey carbon it should look okay.

right this weeks report..

spent all bloody week doing the rear end! i went through half a dozen designs all of which threw up other issues.

whatever i decided on had to be removable, so how about this..fix the new rear end to the rear bumper bar so that it all comes off in one go with the bumper!

it was so much work working with small tolerances of a removable part, not only that but because the left hand side of the exhaust has the 'in' pipe it mean each side had to made seperately instead of just making one side and copying it accross..never again..:eusa_naughty:

now i know this is a bit marmite but i didnt build zombie to please the masses, she's to please me and i love how she's beginning to look, if anyone else agrees with me then i would of course be very chuffed indeed!! :eusa_pray:

this is the space i had left after cutting all of the rear valance off to make fitting the scobby exhaust easier.

just a little photo update for you..
spent the weekend painting the exhaust, cutting out the spoiler end plates, making a little bracket for the filter/BOV and other non-seen rustproofing stuff..
i decided to raise the spoiler a little by adding a couple inches to the bottom of the end plates and also went for aluminium angle as i wasn't sure what height to go for, just gave me a bit of freedom. i will be widening as suggested by jiff, just need some little spacer ends machining for each of the 'aerofoils'.

thanks for the offer adam but im going plastic!

right progress report........my wings arrived from http://www.honeybournemouldings.co.uk so time to do some front end work for a change!

how to fit a woodsport style auto front end piece.

i found that putting a bar accross the bottom of the sub frame allowed the style auto front end to sit nicely on it using the light recesses. this helped shitloads as it meant it would hang by itself and level, the bonus being as the light recesses are tapered, the more you pushed it back the firmer it was held.
1813

to get the fit i wanted i had to cut 40mm out of the centre of the front end, seems a lot but i wanted it to sit 'inside' the bumper on either side. ive also never been a fan of how the light holes dont line up with the mk1 indicator/side light holes, well mine do now :-) though i wont be having lights in mine, i have decided to use the holes to duct air to the front brakes.
1819

got it sitting where i wanted it after much deliberation.
1821

1815

1824

1822

welded in some 'kick out bars' to push the wings out as far as i needed them.
1820

1818

hairy bodge to hold it all together for when i remove it.
1814

inner edges saw lots more hairy bodge once off the car and the outside surfaces all sanded down.
all done ready to go back on.
1811

1812

1825

back down on the deck and looking pretty!
1816

1817

1823

one thing i would say about the woodsport style auto kit is it is incredibly well made, too well made! expect to do a lot of sanding (buy a palm sander if you don't have one already) to bring the wall thickness on the sides down to a more usable size. in some places i went from 8mm down to around 3mm, but of course i would rather have way too much material and sand than not enough.
the fit is of course not 100% perfect, most kit pieces aren't but this one is easy to work with, doesn't feel at all fragile and has a nice thick gel coat.

Paul Woods
12-03-2011, 17:30

Goldy
12-03-2011, 19:43
Nik, the front end looks really good, I have to say it looks rather mean, especially with the borbets and bonet vent, I think it works really well!

nik
21-03-2011, 19:53
so more progress..(btw the rear wing isnt fitted yet its just sat there waiting)
last week saw me finishing the front end, had to make a new bumper retaining strip (you know the one that has the M5 bolts in it the rust away).

i fitted the mx5 coilover adapters but found the rear sits a little high maybe only as little as 5mm but enough to make me order some shorter springs! so theyre coming tomorrow and will fit them so i can tick that job off. painted the shocker tubes in RAL5012 to match the body.

also whilst i was at the rear end i pulled the longshaft out and replaced the inner cv boot as it was split.
today saw me fitting the arches, theyre all bonded on drying over night so tomorrow i can get hairy bodging followed by the rubbing down.

i still haven't decided what depth to go to on the raer of the arches but im kinda liking them long so if i find a way that looks okay i will keep them as long as possible instead of the usual angular chop level with the rear body. i welded in steel inner arch liners to the inner wing out to the ws arch lip which will get some serious waxoyl-ing tomo.

i tried to get a bit of a sweep to the profile of them to tie in a little with the stock front arches, overall im really pleased how it went.

1834

1835

1836

1837

also noticed today whilst fitting blue leds for the dash backlight that the speedo cable is broken so another small job to add to the list.

ollie, it was just a generic bi foil aluminium spoiler second hand off ebay. i made new carbon end plates for it so it mounts up on the original spoilers holes. it is slightly narrow so have made some perspex spacers to add a few mm.

nik
22-03-2011, 16:34
arch update.

got the right hand side fibraled up, with a full inner arch welded in.
also made a decision on the rear, im going loooooong and loooooooow
had to weld in a little extension to the rear to give me something to fibral onto.
the plan is to make new carbon diffuser end plates to replace the short present ones to com down to the same level and shape them on the diagonal to match the lines of the exhaust outlets and wing end plates..:icon_biggrin: maybe hard to visualise.

1839

1840

think it ties in nicely with the 80s interior of the mk1, comes with a pressure sensor so just need to run a wire from the boot to the dash instead of 3 metres of vacuum hose so hoping i get a bit more accuracy from it over a mechanical gauge.

basically its as mentioned RAL5012 blue but this comes out with a satin finish which looks great, though i havent seen it in the sunlight yet just overcast daylight but its certainly imho looking good. cant wait to get painting the rest of her now..and its just rattle cans!
heres a couple of pics of the engine cover.

You know Nik, you can treat that rattle can finish as a basecoat and just have some clearcoat applied over it and it would look fantastic.

nik
18-04-2011, 09:52
I did think about that but tbh I think there will be sooo many imperfections in my painting a clear would probably show them up more. Plus I'm liking the satin finish :-)

love the color it will look great all over the car
also if you have an air compressor think of spray gun the car, it will be much cheaper and better quality, as with rattle cans you will need way to many of them to properly apply the coats

if im going anywhere near the underneath i put her on stands and usually leave a jack under there as well taking some of the weight, im sure theres one under there somewhere!!

just some pics for you pic whores! just a bit of sanding to do and she's finished apart from paint obviously! mot on wednesday :eusa_pray: (the two reflectors i have stuck on theback are for the mot only and will more than likely 'fall off' soon after)

well she passed with flying colours..!!

so took her for a spin, very cautiously at first but the confidence soon grew and was boosting plenty. love being back in a t-bar on sunny days like thie particularly in a mk1.5 imho the original and best of the swaps..
booked in for a 4 wheel alignment tomorrow morning so she should drive a little less nervous.
really happy with the suspension i went for in the end, a bit firm but not too bone shakey.

all in all i am over the moon.

haha no they stayed on..!
advisories were slight play in n/s rear wheel bearing and check alignment of course.!

went and got a 4-wheel alignment done this morning at christchurch tyres in urm christchurch..great service and they were very pleased to look underneath and see nice new suspension parts cos they knew about the usual mk1 rods at the back..cost £48 and took an hour..

we took the stock settings and tweaked for fast road/track and lowered suspension. the drive home was awesome and she felt fantastic..i set it all up by eye of course beforehand, so was very happy to see i got the camber almost spot on, the rest was urm waaaay out lol
they used a Hawkeye system which was a nice bit of kit..

well i had a great weekend, went to watch the touring cars at thruxton. took zombie sat and sunday to give her her first good run out.
absolutely brilliant to drive a 1.5 in anger. im still running just 0.8bar until i finish shakedown testing and she flies, will be turning up the boost once i get rid of the ERR42 from the broken speedo sender.
on the way home yesterday i was giving her some beans on the dual carriageway when i notice a slight rear stear when i lifted off. its a good thing these cars chassis are so tight cos i reckon in any car i wouldnt have noticed it. it felt a bit odd to say the least so pulled over for a looksie, the two lower ball joint bolts were frickin loose!! today has been spent going over the bolts everywhere, but im surprised they didnt pick it up in the mot.

i was having a few issues with the piping for the chargecooler in that it wouldnt clamp very well so i had some leakage at the pump end. also i had a bit of an air-trap with it being situated in the boot.
so i ordered some 19mm internal diameter rubber hose instead of the nylon see through stuff i was using to reduce the chance of any leaks. i also fabbed up a bracket to mount the pump in its rightful place on the front of the gearbox (the two unused holes on the front of the box on a flat face). with a slight lean-back there shouldn't be any issues with air trapping either.

not a brilliant pic but not too much to show really. frees up the corner of the boot for the meth injection stuff now.

Nik,

Out of curiosity what sort of budget did you have in mind for the respray?

My gravitas always leans toward DIY (and budget DIY at that!) and if you have a big enough garage that you can mod into a makeshift spray booth, can get your hands on a cheap compressor and are game for it, it's well within your reach.

Mind you, I generally drive shit boxes and not tasty looking motors!

Chris.

nik
07-05-2011, 19:20
ha yeah i have considered everything from rattle cans to proffesional job and everything in between. tbh im crap at prep work just dont have the pacience so will have to be an expensive pro job BUT then the other bit of me says, be serious, this car is only going to last a coupl eof years before it will need remedial cosmetic repairs anyway so go the cheapest route possible.
i will probably end up rough flatting it, lots of high build primer and a rattle can finish. (a pro has offered his expertise and guns if i can find a compressor down here, but again will be a marquee job with my own prep and i will not accept charity that's 'too' generous so will still end up throwing a grand at it out of courtesy )
the budget question is a difficult one cos if i go pro route i will find the money but will take a little longer..
ive just had an idea!! how about a pre-JAE spray party..!! anyone that wants a weekend on the south coast can come down and we'll setup the BIG marquee and each take a panel..

You may struggle to buy Cellulose chap - Bad for the enviroment you know. Some places still sell it but it comes with a big sticker saying "not for automotive use" or something similar!
Two pack is a possible - better finish from the gun, but by golly you better get yourself a decent mask. Whereas cellulose would leave you feeling quite light headed and funny, two pack will leave you quite dead.
I'll see if I can do a trip to the coast though!

snowtigger
08-05-2011, 02:00
You need an air fed mask with 2pak plus air dry thinners so it goes off in a cold environment, prep work is the key high build primer then flatten down the high spots, some tak rags and panel wipe then rehigh build primmer flaten that off, panel wipe a couple coats of paint some fine sanding then clear laquer and jobs a good un easy for a grand or a couple of blokes may take a weekend for a tidy job just needs time and effort.

Nik, you seen the "50 dollar" budget paint jobs from the states :

http://www.rickwrench.com/index79master.htm?http://www.rickwrench.com/50dollarpaint.html

People seem to be doing it all over with what looks like reasonable results, not sure about how long it'll last but for a quick and dirty paint job for jae it'll be cheap!

nik
09-05-2011, 07:57

nik forgot to ask you, did you had any issues with the corsa discs?

on mine the only thing that i do not like as the discs are 260mm, and the pads max height is at 255-6 there is a small lip arround the discs, which gets a bit rusty, thinking to machine the discs down to the exact pad clamp, but in a later time

nik
10-05-2011, 18:46
No bolt up issues at all. Clearance is good. Will have a good look now they've all bedded in to asses pad fitting but I think the pads sat slightly over the edge of the disk by about half a mm from memory, certainly nothing to worry about.

nik
26-05-2011, 13:53
okay so a month driving her and i am now confident nothings going to fall off. going to be turning the boost up to a more respectable 19psi next time im in her and i thought it a good idea to look at charge cooler coolant temperatures and intake charge temperatures from now on. so i bought a little car thermometer from ebay and made a TB related transparency. i think its pretty cool ;-)
