Well its been a while in coming but I have finally got the build started. First things first. Bought a Camry...

Drive it nearly 3000 miles with it constantly overheating... Then the fun starts!

Fun moment when my friend ended up dangling in mid air when he lost control of the crane, engine was fine though.

Has anyone ever put a V8 in here and a drive-shaft to the back wheels?

quite pleased I got it to this stage without any issues
http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2010/04/67.jpg

now I have got to this stage the water system looks a state. there is gunk in all the channels. I really don't want to take the bottom end apart so can anyone tell me the best thing to do to clean the whole block. inside and out??

I also don't want to remove the valves really if I can avoid it but again what would the best method of cleaning the heads inside and out please?

hmmmmm
09-04-2010, 23:49
Good luck with the build!

Best way is to take it apart and get it tanked. Will only a couple of quid at any engine shop. I dont think getting it cleaned while still assembled is a good idea, taking it apart will only take a day with the manual at hand and then youll be sure everything is in order, things like bearings, oil rings etc.

if you drove it 3k with it over heating then strip the bottom end . Will save it going bang in the 2 !

Right, about time for an update. Its been over a year and lots has happened but not with the two (aka 'signore due')

First off. Just want to publicly apologise to Mr Woods and Ant for dropping my heads off for porting and skimming and then leaving it a year before getting back in touch. Very sorry Guys.

The build had stopped for lots of reasons but one of them was my garage was far too filthy and cramped to rebuild a V6 from the block up.

Got the car back on its wheels.

1915

Then the garage got cleared out, cleaned and the floor painted.

1914

Picked up a new rear wing. 21 quid!

1916

So the rebuild is now back on. Need to get up to Woodsport and get the heads back. The block goes to the engine shop this weekend to be cleaned and decked.

Oh and got myself a little sprayer from ebay so need to teach myself how to use that.

1917

Let the fun resume!

13-07-2011, 12:29
Excellent!

That's what we like to see!

Like I said before, its easy to stop and then struggle to get back into the swing of things.

Listen to some V6's on YouTube - it never fails to inspire me!

Chris.

Sent from a cool dark place.

Okay I am in the process of ordering some bi-metal head gaskets from Mike at Ferriday Engineering, they are available in two thicknesses 0.6 and 1.0mm thickness and i don't know which ones to go for?

I have got newly skimmed heads and will have a decked block by this time next week. I do hope to add a scion supercharger at some point as well.

Cheers

1.0mm bi-metal head gaskets on order. Thanks aussiemr2.

Last night I thought I would get the clocks sorted.

Usual camry rev counter swap. But i had a new gauge and some fancy dials to install.

Before

During

1919

1920

And then after, its hard to picture these as they just reflect the light, they are stainless steel jobbies from metal-monkey. And the voltmeter has gone and a boost gauge in its place, it can show vacuum until the supercharger arrives.

Been spending some time getting the LSD removed from the MK3 gearbox I picked up for £63 (bargain). Lump hammer and a block of wood on the mk3 driveshaft end free'd it. I now have the old diff removed from the MK2 gearbox.

http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2011/07/249.jpg

Then I tidyed up the heat-shield tin as it was looking very tired.

Update on the rustoleum. Managed to order the wrong primer and a shade of what I thought was red and turned out to be as orange as err... an orange!

Still waiting for the block to come back from the shop so next, need to get the side bearing off the lsd...

Hi Chris.
Well between the arm still not being right (Managed to bend one of the plates, tripping over the cat...) And Mr T's getting two of the crank bearings the wrong way round... Tut... Its not moved on a deal. Got some new seats for it which are nice and got my cylinder heads back from Woodsport, man they are beautiful.
Spoke to Paul at the same time about putting lpg in the two as well which he was positive about. so need to get the inlets drilled before bolting it all back together in preparation.

Main thing has been planning my wedding as well which happens in December so thats taken up a few months of spare time!

Hows life with you need to catch up on your threds.

I havent done a great deal - sold my V6 (BBQ) and my Subaru Legacy! Got a new job with company car, bloody FordFockusSake Diesel!

Pat has parked his car up for the winter, i have just secured another cammy, and hoping to get the black on the road soon to pootle around in until the 3VZ is ready.

Hoping to update threads soon, but bloody annoying not being able to use TapaTalk fully!

Right, time for a big update. Finally got the correct crankshaft bearings for the 3VZ from Toyota. Going to write this bit up from my point of view as a first time engine re-builder so it may be of use to other first timers. Experts please feel free to comment if I have made mistakes.

You can just make out on this picture that the tab on the bearing at the front of the engine (pulley end) is on the other side of the bearing centre line from the other 3 bearings.

and...
http://www.woodsport.org/forum/images/recovered/2012/03/562.jpg

Was really pleased at this point how well it had all gone, so I turned the block over to the worst sight possible...
http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2012/03/169.jpg

FFS!

The block has been upside down on the engine stand with some oily cardboard covering the block faces in a plastic bag for several months now since the block was decked and 'cleaned' by the engine shop... I am thinking they must have sand blasted it and flushed the sand out really well... TUT!

Looking at some other posts, is this more common than it should be? Have other seen the same? Anyway I am hoping that being upside down for several months and moved back and forth in the garage it has loosened any crap that was left floating inside the block. Does anyone know if that's a water or oil channel it poured out of?

So I gave it a good clean with an air line
http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2012/03/170.jpg
Thats better.

Didn't really want to stop my productive flow so carried on sorting the pistons out. New bearings for these as well.

Chris can indeed Knocks out v6's in under 3 weeks but he doesn't go to the extreme you are doing.. so bare that in mind, I did a head gasket /water pump/ belt change on mine and had mine back together in couple of days, but then again I had nothing else to do so just cracked on with it..

take your time mate, I rather take longer and be thorough, and make no cockups, rather than rush the job, make a huge cockup and end up taking the whole thing apart..

You are thinking right there...
Might want to drill out the remnant of the old bolt 1st, or get a bolt extracter kit.. and try and fetch the remainder out.. might not need to cut the new threads in then..

Yes, there's a couple of specialist companies that will sort that for you if you can't do it yourself.

Bit of a frustrating weekend but did make some progress. All the camshafts are in, backlash set on both sides. One cam cover degunked, dremel wire brushed and then sprayed silver. Looks tidy.

Got the exhaust manifolds and new gaskets fitted, cleaned and sprayed one of the heat shields, can't mount it yet as found another sheared bolt that needs drilling. The count is up to three so far... Then was just adding the last coat of clear to the plastic top engine cover when the can dripped and ruined the whole thing... Gutted! Sure my technique was to blame but a pain in the arse none the less...

Spend ages searching for cambelt cover bolts, eventually found them so got the cambelt on but need to lock the crank in place to torque the pulley bolt, that is going to be a pain... The engine on the stand doesn't allow for the flywheel to be fitted as its too close to the engine block.

Anyone got any good tips for locking the crank in place so I can finish the other side of the engine? I can drop it off the stand if needed...

Moan over. Pics and positive progress to follow.

adamh
26-03-2012, 18:41
good work man. locking the crank in place? i used bolts! j/k. i fitted the fly once the sump was on, and the engine was hanging from a crane waiting to be mated to the box, its no biggy.

cdwood2010
26-03-2012, 19:31
Yeah, not quite sure what you mean.

If you mean hold the crank while you nippy up the fly and clutch bolts etc, put it back on the floor (or custom trolley if you built one!) and use a long bar with a 19mm. Gravity will do the rest.

If you mean torque up the crank bolt, just get it tight and check it when it's in the car.

C.

racerADS
26-03-2012, 22:12
Err cheers Chris not sure why I didn't think to wait till its on the car... Had thought to use bolts Az but can't get them on with it on the stand.

cdwood2010
26-03-2012, 22:26
Yeah, they go back a bloody sight easier than they remove.

Don't forget to test the bolt length - unlike I did until I tried to start the car.

The bolts were literally 1mm too long, causing the engine to almost seize.

God I was cross taking that box back off!

Got some top tips from Mr C Woods yesterday so hoping to carry on the good work.

Edit: Also passed on my wifes 'top tip' to Chris. The best way to clean anything that is covered in oil or dirt or just needs a dust over. Baby Wipes! They are the future. If they can get poo off a baby's bum then sure as hell they can clean some oil off a camcover. I have gone through about 8 packs so far on this engine build, they work and they are really cheep. I use Morrisons own brand :)

cdwood2010
02-04-2012, 15:51
I laughed, but I found s pack in the house and had a go at the cam covers.

The wipes are that magic cloth stuff that dirt clings to - they made a fab job of all the bits I needed to paint.

What I want to know is what you guys were doing in the garage in the first place that necessitated having wet wipes to hand!

:-O

Been ticking along with it as and when. The sheared bolt in the top of the block that holds the coolant pipe took me quite a while to sort out. In the end I metal epoxyed some threaded bar into it after drilling and tapping a bigger hole then applied loctite to the nut I put on there. Hoping that should be more than enough to keep it all together forever.

Inlet manifold on and fuel rail assembled.

And by responsibility I mean it is your god given task to piss all over stupid little hot hatches at every set of lights.

Last weekend the Mrs and I took a trip to visit those lovely people at Bodgesport. Always friendly and welcoming it was nice to meet Pat and get a bacon sandwich from Mrs Chris. Picked up some more tips about pipework and wiring from the big man himself :)

Then it happened... Chris uttered the words "do you want to go for a spin in the V6"!!! Now I know most of you have been in/ driven a V6 MR2 but this was the first time I have ever sat in one, never mind being driven in one... (although PW did let me sit in his MK1 V8 and rev it a while back)... I became 10 years old again... Chris took me for a blast up the road, clutch slipping a bit but still, the noise and the feeling was awesome! Then he let me have a go. Excitement, trepidation, exhilaration all vied for top spot while I tried to keep my cool and remember I could drive but that pranging Chris's toy would mean bad times all round. It felt fast and strong and lots of fun and I want one now!

Thanks Chris, legend.

Anyway, this weekend the sun came out so the car came out. Needed to tidy up the garage for the joining of engine and transmission.

Got the engine off the stand and whilst it was hanging in the air I fitted the oil seal behind the flywheel and the sump properly.

Then got the lump secured onto the 3 wheel trolley made from kitchen worktop.

Gearbox out of the passenger seat space and onto the creeper. Mental note to PM Paul and check he put oil in it already, I am sure he did. (Thanks again PW for the LSD and extended 5th gear).

Got the loom stripped down as well. Now I need to get some MK3 flywheel bolts from Toyota and combine the following...

Looking jolly good there mate, that engine looks mint!

Once you've got the flywheel fitted, chock your gearbox up to the same height and just roll them together - much easier than wrestling with it!

Another few weekend hours on the car has seen some more progress. Was helping my lovely wife with the garden at the same time but really pleased with what I got done.

The bolts arrived from Aaron @ Steven Eagell Toyota in MK. Here is how much they stick out of a Fidenza flywheel
http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2012/05/266.jpg

Got the flywheel fitted and all torqued up.

Clutch and pressure plate mounted
http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2012/05/268.jpg

Decided to paint the gearbox with rustoleum (750 degrees) and it came up really nice!

http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2012/05/270.jpg

Cleared the old 2 litre coolant pipes out of the engine bay, and took the front engine mount out for a polybush and a clean.
http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2012/05/271.jpg

Not checked the wiring manual yet but does this old MR2 wiring need unwrapping?
http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2012/05/272.jpg

Then on Sunday afternoon, after watching Rossi race to an amazing second place in Le Mans on the laptop. Magic happened, with the help of the wife, the gearbox and engine came together...

Excellent progress! That box looks well tasty! In fact the whole setup looks good!

Those wires in the engine bay don't get touched. You will be connecting to some of the ones the other side of the bulkhead, but keep as much in the boot as possible. We extend them from the harness plug from the fuse box if we need to just so we can hide it!

Give me a shout when you get to the wiring if you need, it's all quite fresh in my mind still!

Very nice progress!

You will need the reversing light, the two fusebox tails (they fit the white plugs) and the starter relay plug, with as much cable as you can remove from the n/a loom. Sadly this pretty much renders the old loom useless.

Getting an engine hung is deffo a two man, erm I mean person, job. I've done it on my own but you end up running about a lot!

Put the front mount in place as well if nothing else, because it will rock when you first start it up.

I normally sort the wiring and make sure it actually works before I fit cooling and suspension back. Just in case it needs to come out again! Grrrr!

Let me know if you need to confer, and I will try and get my notes put together this weekend in case they are of any use!

Been a busy few weeks but got some jobs done on the two.

I was reading about Jim V6 that has ended up in Eastern Europe and saw his modified MR2 igniter bracket I set about modding my own.

First I got the grinder out and chopped the bits I didn't need off the camry one. MR2 bracket on the left, bit I needed off the camry one right.
http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2012/07/108.jpg

Offered it up to the MR2 bracket.
http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2012/07/109.jpg

Drilled a couple of holes through the camry bracket to line up with the MR2 holes and put some bolts in.
http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2012/07/110.jpg

Checked all the bits fit on and yes they do, then threw some paint at it and hey presto it looks like it's always been like that.

Funny, for you lot but not for me, story. Been trying to figure out the best way to route the coolant hoses. The lower one on the engine is obviously really easy with a 90degree section of hose. The upper one had been causing me brain ache. I had purchased 1m of flexi hose from tinternet and it came so close to the left hand MR2 metal pipe that comes under the car, maybe a bit too close. After some suggestions from Chris 'The Bodge' Woods I took his advice to cut the umbrella (metal MR2 pipe) in half around the bend. Perfect! The small section I had left was perfect for getting the end of my flexi tube close to line up onto the under car pipe. Only problem was it was too close as I needed to remove some of the pipe under the car so I could add another section of hose to join the pipes together... So, an here is the painful part. I get all ready under the car with my angle grinder, safety goggles, gloves. I double check that I wasn't going to cut any fuel or brake lines and I start to cut... I get about 1/4 of the way through and I stop to check my progress! Yep cutting nicely... I look to my left and oh look there is the actual pipe I should be cutting through! FCUK!!!! I have cut into the wrong bloody pipe!!! Sigh... Anyway after all that I had to finish cutting that pipe to add another section of hose to join my massive blunder back together. FFS... What a toss bag. Will put some pics up but its not turned out that bad. The left hand side looks mint! The right, a dogs dinner...

Progress at close of play yesterday was; got the exhaust downpipes on, driveshafts in (thanks again Chris), coolant in (no leaks!), first bottle of gearbox oil in.

My low water warning light still seems to be on even though I have properly bled the coolant system? Could it be a sensor or more than likely my wiring?

cdwood2010
09-07-2012, 10:03
How in the name of George Bernard Shaw did you manage to cut the wrong pipe! We want pics!

Also are you sure that light is water and not oil!? There is a fix so that the oil level sensor (in the sump) reads correctly.

Pics please.

Okay here is the left hand pipe as you look from the back of the car. Joins really nicely with the 1m flexi pipe that runs up and over the top of the engine.
http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2012/07/128.jpg

It runs in a nice gentle arc up alongside the other hose.
http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2012/07/129.jpg

And here is the dogs breakfast I made of the other pipe... sigh...

So the car is back on its wheels. After sorting out the rear subframe - engine mount on the top of it, anti roll bar the right way up and removed the old exhaust support triangle thing.

Took it for a drive round my estate and it seems great, rear calliper was binding so need to service that, had the oil level light which I have now neutralised and then when it got up to temperature I got an ECU light. Linked the two diag ports LE1 and E1 if memory serves (don't quote me on that) and it came up as a 52. Knock sensor issue. hmm strange, traced the cable back and couldn't find the connection into the loom??? Then had a moment of clarity and after digging in my box of wires I found both connectors for the knock sensors which I had cut out of the loom in a moment of stupidity... Spend a good hour wiring that back in and hey presto the car doesn't throw any errors. Not only that it now runs super smooth. Settles.

Few pics.

Got a few things to do before putting it in for MOT.
Replace rear ball joint.
Service rear calliper.
Install horn button.
Weld drivers sill.
Mount front number plate.
Install protective under panels.
Install last of the 4 front engine mount bolts that keeps wanting to thread itself.
Insure.
Drive to test centre and cross fingers :)

Have to wait until I get my new garage before I can put my new boot & spoiler, front splitter and side skirts on it and respray, it might look tired and tatty but it will drive nicely in the mean time :)
