View Full Version : speedo sender mod

Ive just about reached the end of my tether with these damn mechanical speedo drives,or the lack of them! its probably the hardest part to source out of everything, and lets face it the supply of them is pretty thin on the ground. How long before we see them dry up altogether??? thats going to knock a fair few 1.5 swaps on the head or end up costing a fortune from mr T.

So! with this in mind i think i may have come up with a way to get around the need for a rev1 turbo mechanical speedo drive.I had a play about today with a few ideas and it could be a doer. Not going to post any specifics just yet in case it doesnt work and ive made myself look like a right tit but if it does work it'll mean the end of speedo drive hunting forever! :bounce:

I'll know more by the end of the week and i'll use this thread to update the details when im sure its going to graft properly.

Goldy

Can you not simply swap the sender @ the gearbox end for an electronic unit from a rev3? I thought they just came out?

welly_59
10-01-2006, 21:15
goldy the problem is that the gearbox already has a electric speedo sender but you need a mechanical drive for the mk1.5 swap as the mk1 speedo is cable driven!

Goldy
10-01-2006, 21:24
ah... so really what you need is an electric speedo mod for the mk1

only way to do that would be to put clocks in with electronic speedo, like paul as done with lily with his fitting of astra gte digital dash.

while we're talking bout digital dashes, any other people think could fit?

Goldy
10-01-2006, 23:15
I think the honda S2000 has a digi dash.... probably struggle to find one though? Vauxhall carlton/senators gsi's had digi dashes as well in some of them.

What bout motorbikes? or maybe if you have money to burn :

http://www.demon-tweeks.co.uk/products/ProductDetail.asp?cls=MSPORT&pcode=STAST8100-010EC

You could probably build your own with a carputer or something for around that kindof money.

i think the easiest option, though would need some fabrication, would be custom gauge cluster..after that i would probably stick a mk2 cluster in..be a wiring headache but as part of a swap process nothing too tough..
and failing that i would probably stick a new electronic speedoon the dash somewhere and just leave the mk1 speedo discon..:freak:
i do remember having to scoure the scrappies for my mech speedo..total pita..

fingers crossed i'll have good news by the end of the week.

Welly i think ive found one for ohms swap from a st165,but im waiting until it arrives before i can confirm its the same.

right, now im officially "the man"! :D it works! so im ready to disclose all...this is some cool modifying shit so listen up!

Right the problem is we cant get mech speedo drives,in fact it threatens our very existance!! ok a little bit of zadge there but you get the drift, right heres the mod...

We all get a free electronic speedo sender with anything other than a rev1 turbo gearbox so i got thinking....what if its possible to turn an electronic sender into a mechanical???

STEP ONE
Take one electronic speedo...
http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2006/01/20.jpg

STEP TWO
Remove the three screws on top of it to take off the black plastic electronic bit.Under thats a carbon brush and spring, bin that, take out all the oil seals and washers too,and whats left is this....
http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2006/01/21.jpg

STEP THREE

Remove the funny little adapter thing inside to leave a bare drive like this...
http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2006/01/22.jpg

STEP FOUR

The really cool bit,i discovered that the st165 gt4 has a little 90* adapter piece like this...
http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2006/01/23.jpg
This would normally screw onto the st165 speedo drive and then the cable onto that...its part number is 83770-30070 and ive yet to find out how much toyota charge for this but surely its way less than a complete mech speedo drive?

STEP FIVE

This adapter has nothing to screw onto but it fits very nicely into the top of the electronic speedo and its peg locates right into the speedo drive perfectly!!!!
http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2006/01/24.jpg
Now would you look at that...one mech speedo drive with 90* adapter.

All that remains is to make a small triangular plate with three holes in it that fits over the adapter and screws into the electronic speedo housing, whats that 20 mins work? when i turned the drive cog the whole thing worked beautifully.

All that remains to be done now is find out how much 83770-30070 is,i will buy one and make up the retaining plates if anyone wants one,our speedo hunting days are over!!!

Thankyaverrrmush.

cool paul i might be needing one of them plate off you depending on the cost of the 90* adaptor. are they available secondhand?

Paul Woods
11-01-2006, 18:25
id say st165 adapters are easy to find 2nd hand but surely they cant be expensive from Mr T? I will find this out tomorrow though. As for the little retaining plate its a simple triangle with a hole in the middle and three holes at the corners, easy to make.

nice info paul better than the ?50 i paid toyota for my mech drive

Paul Woods
12-01-2006, 06:38
cheers chaps,of course this all depends how much that little st165 adapter piece is from toyota, still if its under £50 then its always an option.Id like to think its about £20 or £30 though....i'll brace myself for a shock at the parts counter today.

I noticed if it wasnt for the tight angle that the speedo drive comes out of the gearbox we could have just plugged the mk1 speedo cable straight into the stripped out electronic drive with the same retaining bracket and no need for the 90* adapter, but theres not enough room for that.

if the st165 adapter piece comes out too expensive, flick me the P/N and I'll check with my Toyota parts god to see if he can do a good deal on them (could send you a bulk order of 5-10 I guess)

be interesting to see what price toyota have for this as could well be worth getting from abroad if much cheaper ! I know GZE pistons are a fair bit cheaper from over the pond than they are here !

Paul Woods

right, went into the dragons den that is our beloved toyota dealership this morning and asked for a price on this part...he went away and came back with a triumphant £11.90 +vat!!!! i was feeling really smug and thought yes this is perfect! but i forgot i was standing in that alternative reality that is toyota...so i said ok i'll have one please, with that he went away again and came back, this time to say the part had be superseeded...now ive no idea what that means, maybe a gold leaf diamond encrusted version but he then announced it to be £36.50 +vat.

I said hang on thats one hell of a hike from £11.90??? so from feeling elated to trudging out of the place with my head hung in the space of 5 minutes,i love my toyota dealer.

I suppose £36 +vat isnt the end of the world but £11.90 sounds so much nicer, malcolm can you see what price your man can come up with mate?

Also rick if you're reading this can you try and get some better numbers out of your branch although i suspect £36 is going to be the reply.I get 15% off that which just negates the vat really....bummer and bollox.

Still looking on the positive side its better than shelling out for a whole speedo isnt it!

superceded part number is:
83770-22120

price from america is $66

i found this site useful for referencing prices, will give rough idea of uk prices even though it is american. you just enter the part number and it does the rest!

I'm curious, on average how much is it costing you guys to gather all the parts for the swap?

$66 is a bit much for small parts, and if small things like this keep popping up, it's going to get more expensive at time goes on.. i.e. no more mech speedos, then a solution, then the parts get discontinued, etc...

I suspect that by the time I gather everything, I would have spent a bunch more than you guys, just due to parts availability issues.

Got the price, $75NZ which ATM works out to about 29 pounds. Bit cheaper, but worth it? Not sure on that. I guess if you buy 10 you'd save 70 pounds :D

cheers mate, thanks for trying! by the time shipping is added etc....ah well looks like £36 it is...but at least it is a working alternatve to trying to find a mech speedo.

Heres a relatively cheaper Toyota OEM Parts site.
That adapter comes out to be $18 on it. ^_^
Not sure about shipping to the UK though.

nice one deemon,$18 thats about the £12 i was quoted by the toyota dealer before they said the part was superseeded by the £36 item..... i'll find out if your site does them for $18 though, thats excellent!
