View Full Version : Making an Exhaust

David Sleith

Thought I would have a go at making an exhaust and practice my welding skills. Was harder than I thought and it was a first try. Next one will be better. There is a flexi on the exhaust now which is not shown in the pictures and I would make the downpipe a little less restrictive with longer single pipes before they merge and less of an angle.

Pictures say a thousand words

wow, making your own muffler is pretty hardcore :)

looks pretty good other than the merge angle. but you already mentioned that

hmmmmm

Next one will be better? This one is already brilliant mate!

Not a lot of people make the ENTIRE exhaust themselves, looks awesome, really curious as to what this is going to sound like. And those welds on the Y piece look great!

Maybe a bit too loud without a perferated baffle inside the silencer and some fibreglass matting.

you must have balls the size of an elephant - jesus every credit - i hope it all works out for you

nice work,

i like the muffler, have thought about trying to do one myself, but i think thats as far as i would get... trying.. haha

will be interesting to hear how loud it turns out to be

Sounds really good - noise level is somewhere between a Janspeed and a Mongoose.

The filling in the muffler is a product called acoustafil. Its not fibreglass wool. It breaks a fine stitch matting when first heated and bursts into a cotton wool type material which absorbs the noise. It has a higher resistance to blowing out the exhaust and you don't need to wrap around wire wool along the length of the perforated tube inside the box. It avoids the need to have internal baffles while keeping the flow high.

Took a lot of research to find something that didn't need repacked every 500 miles like the race exhausts you can buy. Its much better than the standard straight thru cans.

Hi david, that's not a bad effort at all for a first attempt mate! Only thing i would say is it desperately needs a flexi in there somewhere.

Wibble.

one of these days you'll post a video on you tube and I'll be able to put a voice to all this nonsense. for now, the default accent in my head simply doesn't work for the crap you come up with :blah:

I know a micheal jackson, he likes to play with his hose...not sure if thats why he has the nickname "willie"

helps that he is a fireman though...

solid effort on your exhaust though, the matt you used, where did you find it? links are our friends;)

been temted to do one for the V6, starting at the manifold flange though...

One already in Paul - just didn't take a pic of it

My new air die grinder turned up and a set of carbide burrs so I'm tempted to alter the merge a little

if that stuff really is as good as the blurb says, sports mufflers are not for us anymore...

was it a cost effective solution?although life span has yet to be factored in.

had to buy a box which would do a few cans but figure used about £10 worth

Gotta say hats off to you David. Thats a cracking job you've done to build a complete system from scratch. how much did it cost you to make?

Where'd you get the flexi from David? I've been looking at some from Jetex...

It does look a fine bit of kit like a janspeed or mongoose.

I'm highly impressed with the level of work hats of to you mate.
