This one is a first for us, we have a 20v silvertop GT at the garage now and will be putting a 3s-gte into it very soon. This is one of those builds that will be covered indepth here as it is a rare conversion and not often documented. Also a first for TB too so we hope it makes interesting reading.

Lots of updates to follow.

Nice Paul... :)

AE101s had the silvertop 20v(both versions), then AE111s got the blacktop(MAP), IIRR(big shame this one isn't a blacktop tbh)......

Is it a Levin or Trueno(Ok, it'll never be a proper one(Hatchi forever!!)) btw??

A little preparatory work started today on the engine.Dara and i discussed what ancilliaries would and wouldn't be staying on this build, the A/C for example was to be ditched completely, partly because we need the space that the condenser occupies for a front mount intercooler but also because there is just not enough room in the bay for the AC compressor. So that is all getting ripped out.

Dara also said the power steering pump could go if it was going to be a problem getting it to work with the 3sgte, but i immediately knew it was going to be almost vital that we found a way to retain this because a 3sgte corolla is going to need all the help it can get in the steering department! Plus running a PS rack without fluid in it will be heavier than a non PS rack.... so we had to work a solution out.

Now we could have just used a Gt4 PS pump, after all that comes already bolted to the block on a Gt4, however it sits right at the back of the engine just above the driveshaft, and on dara's corolla this would mean a major replumbing of the pipework for the rack and also the fluid reservoir.Plus the final nail in the coffin for using the Gt4 pump was the pulley size... it's just way too small compared to dara's pump pulley so it would have had the opposite effect of way too much steering assistance and would probably have felt overly light.

So we had to use the original 20v 4age PS pump, and that is located right at the front of the engine bay, if we could duplicate its relative position on the 3sgte motor then all of the associated pipework/reservoir etc could remian totally stock and in its proper position... which i like the sound of, plus the ratio of PS pump to engine revs would be correct (very similar crank pulley sizes between the 20v and 3sgte).

First thing we did was fit a Gt4 alternator bracket, this puts the alt at the front of the engine and allows us to ditch the horrible Mr2 huge cast bracket we love so much!

Next we made a plate that bolts to the block where the AC pump used to sit...

http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2009/10/2.jpg

Remember all of this is just bare bones construction work on a dirty 3sgte, all of the making things pretty comes much later on.

With this plate made the 20v PS pump was then carefully aligned with the crank and bolted onto the plate....here it is removed on the plate, captive nuts were welded onto the plate rear along with spacers on the top two bolts.

http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2009/10/3.jpg

http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2009/10/4.jpg

And here is the PS pump fitted up to the engine along with the alternator...

http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2009/10/5.jpg

This should now be sitting roughly in the same place it did on the 20v.

We also made a tensioner for the alternator.... circled red, again needs prettying up.

Circled blue, i am going to have to alter the angle on this pipe to clear the alternator but this is very easy.

Paul Woods
02-10-2009, 06:54
Yeah nik it's the challenge in working through the new problems making stuff fit i guess mate.

Tiggs i already did that one mate, converted Lily to PS many years ago and it worked too, just never got round to driving the car....

I believe this is the only Mk1 in the world to ever get a PS conversion.

A good bit of progress on the project, the 20v was very easily removed leaving us with a nice big empty engine bay, these corollas have a surprisingly big bay....

http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2009/10/47.jpg

Before a single thing was altered we did this...

http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2009/10/48.jpg

Straight in with the 3sgte! Lots of space around it and it sits pretty nicely in there. So knowing it fits without any real issues we dropped it back out.

This engine mount and the battery tray were chopped off...

http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2009/10/49.jpg

We also gutted the aircon from the car, removed the corolla radiator and made space for the front mount intercooler. We also worked out what route the IC pipework was going to take.

http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2009/10/50.jpg

Having looked at the skinny corolla rad and the crap position of its water outlets in relation to the 3sgte we decided to bin it, instead we found a Mk1 Mr2 rad (much larger cooling capacity than the corolla one, we measured it) fitted very nicely in the same space. The really spooky thing was that the original 20v rubber rad pipes onto the corolla rad now fitted directly between the 3sgte and the Mk1 rad! No mods whatsoever! Direct plug n play rad pipes.... so for anyone doing a 3sgte corolla, use a mk1 rad, then the old pipes will just fit :)

http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2009/10/51.jpg

You can see we chopped away a section of front panel just to the left of the rad, this is the exit point of the IC pipes. The IC i have ordered has dual outlets on one side.

At the end of play here is the stripped out/degreased/jetwashed engine bay ready for its new engine mounts to be welded in.

Well fuck me!

I had one of them "persuing" me in the V6 the other day and couldn't figure out what it was ..... so now i know!! :)

powered by the mighty 3s-FE like mine...no doubt...

but thinking about it. why could you not fit a curren/celica power steering pump to go on the 3sgte your putting in the rolla?

already got the bracket to mount to a 3s block...

Paul Woods
09-10-2009, 17:29
Indeed it has sketchy, and that was an option open to us, but it would have meant the power steering pipes would need fabricating to go between gt4 PS pump and corolla rack, also the pulley on the gt4 is quite small, the corolla one is large..... so if i fitted the gt4 pump it would have given way too much power assistance.

So we decided to mount the corolla pump to keep the assistance as it was (cranks look the same diam between 3s and 20v).But yes you are correct in terms of a pump working on the 3s the celica pump is the obvious choice.... if i had been able to pipe it up easy and also swap the pulleys (corolla one looks like a pressed on affair) i probably would have gone down that route instead.

Paul Woods
09-10-2009, 17:50
Engine back in today for final alignment and engine mount making. It will be coming back out for the final time once these mounts are fabricated.

With the engine sitting in the perfect position i made cardboard templates of the new mount side plates...

http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2009/10/57.jpg

http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2009/10/58.jpg

Both sides will need top hat plates for strength and of course seam sealed and painted like we usually do on our Mk1 mr2 1.5 swaps.

Paul, just thinkin, will you have to bin the spot lights for the ic piping or are they safe?

Paul Woods
11-10-2009, 18:34
Safe as houses mate, the IC is going to sit where your AC rad used to go and the piping will not affect your lights.

Thanks Paul, hate when the holes are there but no spotlights! Whats the plan for this week with it?

11-10-2009, 18:53
Engine mount making, bay spraying, and depending how time goes a certain amount of engine prepping and getting the gearbox converted to FWD.

burkedara
11-10-2009, 19:09
Ive started a thread, a lot of interest in it! Im not copyin the whole lot, jus a few pics, ill wait til i have it back! Pickin up a few electronic bits for it, once its back ill be gettin it mapped for 95ron, should be gettin power fc in the next wk!

When you start at the ecu if you just want to remove the RSM thats wired into it, ill get the whole lot put in when im gettin it mapped, save you the hassle of it!

Paul Woods
12-10-2009, 19:09
Today saw the steel versions of the cardboard templates welded in, so the engine now hangs on the mounts so that i can fab up the torque mounts etc. This is still in the very early stages, the chassis mounts don't even have top sections added and need cleaning up....

http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2009/10/66.jpg

http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2009/10/67.jpg

They are structurally sound enough for mock engine hanging purposes for now.

http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2009/10/68.jpg

The new front mount IC arrived today, here it is dummy mounted... again this needs bracketing.

http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2009/10/69.jpg

I refitted the lower crossmember and found it fouled the gearbox right along the bottom edge, so we had to cut away some offending steel in the red box area.... this will all be plated in and seam welded before being painted.

http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2009/10/70.jpg

Fitment of this member then allowed the rear torque mount to be made, pretty much like the old 20v one in design. The front torque mount is half done, this has the uprated polybush insert and uses a combo of Gt4 gearbox bracket and mr2 mount...

http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2009/10/71.jpg

So not a lot to do before the engine is dropped back out for the real fun to begin.

ukpaisley
12-10-2009, 19:18
U going to clock the turbo ?

Paul Woods
12-10-2009, 19:28
By clock i assume you mean rotate the compressor housing? No it is fine where it is, i have repositioned them in the past and while it is entirely doable it does mean rewelding the actuator bracketry which can be fiddly and lead to boosting problems if not done 100% accurately. There is simpy no need to move it on this build, well not at the moment anyway!

dgh938peg
12-10-2009, 19:35
looking sweet Paul

12-10-2009, 20:14
looks a short and quick run to the intercooler,

burkedara
12-10-2009, 20:32
Great progress today, how does the dual outlet to the intercooler work? excuse my ignorance!

Paul Woods
13-10-2009, 07:10
Cheers dan!

Dara basically it is the same as any IC, boost in,it gets cooled, boost out. Both inlet and outlet are on the same side of the IC,easier for me to plumb this up that way than one outlet each end of the IC

burkedara
13-10-2009, 09:04
Thanks, ive never had any dealings with intercoolers before so i hadnt a clue!

Paul Woods
13-10-2009, 18:06
Today saw the front torque mount finished, quite a simple design... of course this needs priming and painting.

http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2009/10/80.jpg

With that done i boxed in and welded up the lower crossmember.... this now clears the gearbox everywhere it needs to.

http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2009/10/81.jpg

With all of the mounting hardware completed the engine could come back out for the final time and the chassis mounts were solidly welded with top plates and also seam sealed....

http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2009/10/82.jpg

http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2009/10/83.jpg

The power steering pump pulley needed a little more clearance around the O/S chassis leg, so we modified the chassis leg, rewelded it and seam sealed.... as a point of interest we found evidence of a previous accident repair in this front corner, looks like it has had a new inner wing and front panel at some point in its life, nothing to worry about though, it looks properly repaired.

http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2009/10/84.jpg

Also we fitted the walbro fuel pump onto the corolla carrier and refitted that to the tank...

http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2009/10/85.jpg

Finally today the mounts and were given a textured shutz coating, this stuff sets like rubber and gives great corossion protection where we have been grinding, it also gives the mounts a factory look when painted...

http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2009/10/86.jpg

http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2009/10/87.jpg

So the engine bay just needs painting and it's done, the rest of the work is purely on the engine/gearbox now.

About 3/4" between the throttle body and bonnet webbing and about 1" between alternator and webbing... these are the highest points, so plenty of room, and that is with the sump perfectly level with the cars floor, so it fits quite nicely.

26-10-2009, 20:30
as for being there from day one...

I work with a guy that used to assemble cars for toyota "pre production" when toyota assembled vehicles here...they would come in "CKD" and the techs would assemble to figure out the process for the NZ spec models...

some times they wouldnt get the engines that were intended...
little starlets and corrollas (like the EE90 shape, with a 3S...or something more crazy)but in the end most ended up as toyota intended, as they were deemed to much for the regular populace.

doesnt mean they didnt do stupid stuff though...he keeps meaning to bring his pics of the stupid cars he built while working for them.

The power steering pump to rack line was also fabricated using mostly camry parts, Toyota parts bin stuff is great when it comes to engine conversions.

I do think the strut brace is a little out. The white doesn't go IMO - carry on the theme or even silver to match the turbo, but the white just doesn't go. Just IMO for what it's worth.

The BOV will be best located off the pipe work from the intercooler I guess, so it doesn't sit too high and get whacked on the bonnet by bumps.

Nice to see this progressing.

snowtigger
03-11-2009, 21:23
the black and yellow theme makes it a bit waspish imo, if your going with a theme yellow or black for the strut brace seems a shame when every thing else has been sorted and color coded why not the brace like johnny says bit of an eye sore.

but who am i to judge any bodys tastes i once built a bike with a custom tank with naked ladies ghosted into the black flames on a neon bright purple paint job with neon green wheels i called it the cheesy bellend, oh youth were for art thou gone i thought it was the bees knees i was only 17 on a yamaha ypvs 125.

Paul Woods
05-11-2009, 06:58
Yes as arnie says you can give your NA box the LSD treatment or use a mk2 turbo box (highly recommended with the 3sgte).Shaft wise they are Mk2 turbo shafts but with celica GT4 st185 outer CV joints fitted to them, this makes them fit the corolla hub.Same mod that is done on mk1 turbo builds.

Stefan-gte

That's great news!

The spacer washers I included in the kit (the 2mm thick, wide M12 ones) are to convert the kit to use the ST185 disc instead of the deeper Camry one.

So if you only needed to fit that (nothing from your nuts/bolts/washers box) then the AE101 is "exactly" the same as the AW11 in terms of brake fit - which makes it the same as AE82/AE92 as well!

Do the pads line up exactly flush with the outside of the disc? (+/- 0.5mm maybe)?

This car will be a weapon!

torque steer maybe a problem with that amount of bhp and torque, i once had for my sins an escort turbo with 250bhp handled like a wounded elephant going round corners fantastic in a straight line but boy was it hard to go round bends and roundabouts.

i agree with the comment this will be an awesome street sleeper on a par with a turbo mk1, but i wouldnt go much higher than 300bhp in a front wheel drive car as you still whant it useable.

@ keri - Did you have to redrill the disks for the ae101 fitment or were they fine? ill probably be onto you about rear pads for it aswell, would you have reds in stock for them?

The AW11 (and also AE101) are both 4x100 PCD, as the two discs I use (Celica ST185 and "Camry-rare-and-now-extinct") are both 5x100 all I need to do is add three holes to make them fit. Totally safe, and I've done heaps of them over the years!

I can't give you a price untill we are sure it's the right part - I'm pretty sure it isn't! I'll need photos and dimensions of the rear pads as well as the dimensions of the rear discs before I can check anything.

Do you have the "OE Ref" numbers for the discs / pads? If you phone Toyota with your full chassis number maybe they'll give you the numbers for the rear discs/pads?

If you can get me those numbers number I can try some other searches.

You will struggle to meet that mate for that budget - you'd need to buy wheel speed sensors or retrofit ABS to the car - and that'll eat £250 (ish) of that budget.

I'm thinking that something along the Megasquirt route might have to be your best bet at that budget mate. Like I advised PlasticGeordie, choose your mapper and tell them what you want.

I would listen carefully to johny especially as if you do not have abs then the cost of launch/traction control is a lot higher as you will need to fit the wheel speed sensors

Im thinkin the power fc may be the only one so cause seems to be the main one thats mapable in this country.

Ive got a bee-r rev limiter that i can try use for launch control instead?

To be honest, I'd sell the Bee-R, put the money towards a spare set of R888 fronts and learn to launch the car manually.

Bee-R is an open loop rev limiter, which takes no account of the conditions or the wheelspin.

Learn to balance the new power on the clutch and accelerator. You'll do a lot better than the Bee-R.

Abs is for pussys and cars that aren't phsically sporty euro barges, instead of spending shed loads tuneing the engine tune your self into how your car handles then when you have that dialled in then up your bhp, 250 in a front wheel drive is more than enough otherwise torque steer is going to be a bastard to controll going round bends.

There's a good reason for these turbo engines into mk1 mr2 because you are no longer trying to put power through the steering wheels, like johnny says pay out for some good tires first run it around for a bit then if your not happy save the money up and buy a good ecu that is supported by a good mapper.

nice project dara
There should be plenty of lads to map her here in ireland for 95crap,westward engineering are supposed to be good,
make sure of emissions etc for nct, youll probly need to refit cat for nct, should be a straight swop if your using standard ct26 turbo,
launch control should come with most ecus, traction is a different story forget that,
i got a run in a st205 engined corolla before, white gxi one, verrrry fast, well over 300horsies and well fast.

Sounds like Adrian's first one...although his silver one(2nd car, ~400ps; forced 4WD dev) was far, far more insane(memories of Elvington still bring a smile)...

Back to an old post re: a mappable ecu, im getting a refund for the power fc i had ordered cause their having major problems getting one, so back to square one to find an ecu for the car!

What are my options for a standalone ecu for a 3sgte? The only thing i really need for it is to be mappable for 95ron, every other option will be welcome!

I'd get the car highered a little and probably soften the springs a little, you'll get the power down better in most places then :)

How are you finding the brakes dara?

burkedara
27-02-2010, 12:29
Ya first thing i have to do is raise up the car about an inch, once its stops rainin ill be able to go at it, the inner cv booths are torn because of the height issue so will have to get them replaced.

The brakes are fairly good, havent got to use them in anger yet, the pads do take a bit to heat up but then their great!

Ive changed the bonnet to a carbon fiber one, must get up pics when i find a camera, i thought that it might not fit because theres a vent going into the lower half of the bay, but it clears everything, just!

burkedara
27-02-2010, 12:30
Forgot to add, ive emailed Link so hopefully ill get a reply on monday then im thinkin goin back over to Ryan to get it mapped! Will be the end of next month though!

biteme
27-02-2010, 12:32
When you raise it an inch - get the alignment re-done. Then, when you've ruined those r888's, think about getting them on a slightly higher profile as well. It won't look "hard" but it'll sure as hell go better!!

burkedara
27-02-2010, 12:40
Im goin to pick up a 2nd set of alloys, and go with a 205/50 profile, should help get the power down better than the 195 it is now. But raising it up is the main problem, if i leave it as is it'l just keep tearing the boots!

biteme
27-02-2010, 12:43
Yep, and with an inch, plus the additional height on the tyre wall will give greater absorption - saving the boots even more :P

burkedara
27-02-2010, 13:06
Thats the plan, dont fancy changin the boots every weekend, but i do love the new found power!

Bit of an update for ye all, raised up the car over an inch all round, put on the 3" downpipe paul gave me that i couldnt use when the car was so low! Went drag racing last week up the north, managed a 14.3 so happy enough for my first time and the car not setup properly yet, got my LINK G$ in the post yesterday so will be off to get it mapped soon. @ keri - ya its from the pic of them on the mk1 that i really got to like them, will be goin gloss black though!

Running standard boost, 0.7 i think, will be goin for mappin in a few weeks time to try get the most out of it? Wat sort of power can be got from the standard engine?

adamh
18-04-2010, 22:32
standard, well, lots, its a 3sgte!. i think if you had a boost controller in there, have one?, you could get it mapped upto 15-16Lbs. circa 265 +/- 10 should be achievable. 14.3 at 10 is a good result, did you enjoy the strip?

For tuning the 3SGTE this is very usefull, http://www.mrcontrols.com/primers/power.htm
Got mine at ca 18 psi with a CT20B turbo, fmic and 3" exhaust system. 300 HP at the crank.

burkedara
19-04-2010, 22:32
Wats the most power that can be got from the standard ct26 turbo, would there be any need to get bigger injectors before goin for mappin? Will be gettin a 3" exhaust made up before goin for mappin so dont think theres much more i can do before that, just a service aswel?

Quandry
20-04-2010, 10:43
The power primer that Stefan posted is a very good explanation of the logical ways to upgrade in stages. You could possibly take it to 1.1bar or so but I wouldn't go higher until you change out your headgasket (unless it's changed already), you would also then be worth upgrading the 440's to 540's.

* Be careful in your FWD! all of that power goes well in an MR2 but it's a lot for the Corolla to take and you're going to find the limits of your available traction!

Stefan-gte
20-04-2010, 18:00
The CT26 can hold up to 1 bar, i would't go any higher that that.
Also when you pass the 5000 rpm the CT26 can't keep up the boost till the redline like the CT20B does.

The Corolla holds up 300hp very well, only in 1st and 2nd gear wheelspin. If i look in the mirror i can see 1 large black stripe at the road, but that's because i don't even have LSD :)

You don't need any bigger injectors unless you go higher than about 320/330hp
But if you do, it's better to upgrade your fuelrail also.

burkedara
21-04-2010, 23:38
Wat model is the ct20b from? Will look into gettin one, or even a hybrid ct26.

The standard turbo lsd is in car at the moment, anyone know of a better 1.5 diff to put in it?

jayray
22-04-2010, 10:19
Only two cars you'll find a ct20b off. There's the st205 gt4, or the gen 3 (94+) onwards mr2 turbos. Don't go for one out of the st215 or st246 caldina, they have the manifold and exhaust side of the turbo cast as one, and port spacing is different to gen2 3sgte.

OlberJ
22-04-2010, 22:31
Be better off getting something slightly bigger than getting a CT20b no?

GT28RS?

jayray
23-04-2010, 00:42
Depends how much they cost over there and if you can find a ct20b. If you get the garrett you have a lot of headroom to play with, but to use it you'll need upgraded fuel system, ecu etc. ct20b is good enough to be getting towards the limits of the stock gen 2 fuel system limits, and you don't have to change anything except the turbo itself

Stefan-gte
23-04-2010, 06:37
Indeed, it's plug and play and you feel a lot of difference.

Like Jayray said, when you go for a bigger turbo you also have to upgrade other compontents.

OlberJ
