View Full Version : under instructions...lol

it would seem if Im keeping my standard SW20 turbo. Im under instructions to V6 it..so it will be getting joined onto the E153 and put back to work.

a couple of reasons really, I have the bits already.
I have to have mine done before the brother in law has his motor pop..
and Im on leave for a few weeks(off for 2, back for 2, and off for 2 more:))...hoping to have it all sorted before Im back to work...after the second lot.
then I can drive it to work every day:D, and being transfered closer soon, the gas bill is of no real concern anymore.

so before I finish the first lot of leave I intend to have the 3SGTE out of the yellow car..the trans off and the flywheel off being machined.

I already have pipes made up. including exhaust.the fuel lines been made up too.so the only thing slowing me down is actually the flywheel/clutch

the limo is a donor car/fit up car, I can find and install another V6 easy enough:)

might sound like a silly question...brain fart if you will...

but would a manual trans surf with a 3vz-e flywheel work as an option for the conversion?

probably easier and cheaper to get one of those than to get my 3sgte one modified....

so a 4 runner one fits, but question then is, is the surf one the same? as according to some of the americans i got info from when looking at doing the swap myself the "truck" flywheel was a no go?

sketchy
01-10-2009, 23:18
and I did some running around yesterday.

the cover on a 3sgte is 9 1/4 inch the surf one is 9 1/2 but the plate is only 1mm smaller on the 3sgte.

there are basically 2 types of surf flywheel available the first is a 2 piece one, with what amounts to a rubber block in it, the other is obviously solid.

trying to track a cheap one down to compare.

the other option is to actually get the 3sgte flywheel and actually use some ARP reduced shank bolts and dowel it to end of the crank(after speaking to the engineers that have done this locally they seemed to think it was safer than actually redrilling the flywheel)

or yet the other option, order a fidenza and be done with it...lol

but I have to do this now...if I dont Im getting divorced apparently..so I have been told...ha ha ha

sketchy
07-10-2009, 23:03
ordered my fidenza last night, going to order my HD organic clutch this afternoon
and the flywheel bolts I can collect when Im ready as they will be sitting at the dealers parts department waiting for me:)

going out to the shed soon to get on with it:)

sketchy
12-10-2009, 07:41
so...the flywheel has been in transit from the states since friday their time.

I have a "super tuff" HD exedy clutch kit sitting in the spare room.
the flywheel bolts getting couriered to me tomorrow.

and the driveshaft bearing support for my turbo axles is getting machined up, after I cut the 3vz mount of the back of it tomorrow morning.

was slack today...really just a drive around, drop alloy wheels to scrap man. old cat converter to "the cat man". pick up steel for other jobs, and good bits for the short 2 day.

sketchy
13-10-2009, 22:10
its just like clitoris today....

ok thats not quite right, more bits arrived...now sitting on the floor next to me is a fidenza...to join the clutch kit..just waiting on the flywheel bolts now:)

sketchy
21-10-2009, 21:30
well I fitted the fidenza to the engine.
using the bolt part numbers off here, as ya do.

I didnt actually bother measureing them, but wound them in and pulled the flywheel on with them. torqued them up to about 74lb/feet.

spun the motor over by hand and there are no grinding noises, or binding
http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2009/10/150.jpg
so Ill guess its safe...if its not Ill deal with it I guess...lol

fabbed up another engine mount(as this is the play car not the limo.)
http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2009/10/151.jpg
while I could have ordered another one off tony the time Id have to wait for another was a factor. so I just went to the steel merchants and got some plate and tube to make another..but I actually got far more than I needed..enough tube to make about 30 odd mounts, and enough plate to make maybe 5 or so...they didnt have any smaller off cuts of plate:(

not gonna be wasted though...I can find other jobs for it:)

http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2009/10/73.jpg

got my new drive shaft carrier bearing to. so just need to pull the shaft out and move that and Im good to drop the v6 in the hole and drive it away...

sketchy
31-10-2009, 22:16
went into a parts shop yesterday and bought some appropriately shaped flexible coolant lines.

had a rough week though, wednesday driving to work the radiator on the ST206/curren split a header tank about 45minutes walk away from work at best.so didnt make it, got the car home and sourced parts instead.

thursday drove the still turbo SW to work, almost got cleaned up by a guy in a white subaru forrester going the other way.clipped the wing mirror on the passengers side on my way to work..
on the way home the radiator return hose clamp failed and it let most of the water out. in the middle of nowhere(even more isolated then when the header tank went on the other car the day before, cell phone coverage pretty much runs out 1km back down the road I was on) so got the 2 home...
friday managed to get the curren back together...so I could go to work again...

so Im not gonna try to get the 3sgte going properly before I rip it out...I topped up the water friday morning, started it up. its not blowing bubbles or anything and no obvious leaks around the timing cover(so pump is probably ok too), thats about, it. Im gonna drop the motor this week, couple of hours a day before I go to work. might even be doing wiring on friday...

sketchy
04-11-2009, 08:01
still not pulled the motor...moved the limo out and put a couple of car covers over it...(yes more than one)

cleared up the shed to bring the yellow car in, but I seem to keep finding panels that are straighter than the ones on the car so Im prepping those for paint instead of pulling them all off the car straight away, so will swap them after painting the shell:)

still got the sills and the bottom of the passengers door to do..so not much left to worry about...and need to reprime some of the drivers door as its pretty well stuffed and should just be replaced instead of skimming with bog to flatten it off like I did...thought it would be alright, but its gonna look "ok", at best

Doesnt look bad mate! Nice work there. No problems with dust coming in/on the paint? Ive seem some people doing this in their garage, but most seal off everything with plastic and use some sort of ventilation?

What gun and paint are using anyways?

Looks great Sketchy, I may have missed it but what colour are you going with???

sketchy
16-01-2010, 00:52
its going back to "super bright toyota yellow"...but being yellow should go on over a white base coat.

of course its PPG dulon...like the primer and clear...as for the gun its a generic "ish" gun in the $180NZ bracket, will post pics of the gun after I go out to the shed next(running at about 35psi, and a fairly thin paint mix)

as for the paint booth thing...if your prepared to clean your shed properly, a makeshift spray booth is much more trouble than it needs to be.

if you have a proper mask, and keep doors and windows closed(so a draft doesnt bring any dust in)you can do ok:)

Im not expecting it to be a show car worthy paint job, but Id at least like it to look good, most of that comes down to things most pro's wont do(spend time on prep, Mr G's 5vz tubby is case in point, made with paitience and commitment, ensures a good result)

I started figuring out what I was gonna do with the nice components I bought about 3 years ago, some audiobahn 3 way components(special import from the states, as they were not being releasd localy).

got a spare door card, a craft knife and a hole saw to cut a hole for the tweeter and cut the grill out of the bottom corner of the card to let the 6inch driver fit.
played with the vivid like some local tagger, drawing lines over it to show where I need to build up the door and the like, will post pics later If Im feeling enthusiastic...lol

its only looking misty cause there was still lots of solvent in the air...

its nasty bright now though....I knew it would be, but I was even surprised by how bright it has become with the white base coat.

only a few little bits to fix and Ill be able to put the clear coat on too...

just have the exhaust manifold flanges and muffler to bolt on and I can sit it on the floor again:D
put the fuel delivery and return pipes together, main coolant hoses(still have to put the heater ones in)rear crossmember and suspension is back together, selector cables hooked up too, strut brace fitted and that pain in the arse brace at the bottom thats so easy to loose:(

then its pretty much just wiring and Ill be good for a quick skid...

having a few dramas...

got spark..
no power to fuel pump....efi relay clicks.. so its getting that far at least., found the wire in the trunk it needs to connect to, will hook it up to the pin in the diagnostic port while Im at it to make life easier later:)

I have earthed the AFM aswell, DVSMR2 had issues with that too...so I did that

when I hooked the pump up to my cordless drill battery it spun up and gave me pressure, and fired while cranking with WOT...would not keep running though..

still only fires while cranking, not every time though. at least its progress. its going to run, I tell you, maybe not today, or even tomorrow. but it wont beat me.

sketchy
21-04-2010, 06:30
Im thinking I crossed the wires efi/fuel pump...

as I can get the fuel pump running even when you stop cranking...may have to check the efi, so its not the intermitant hold like the pump should be....

so its more finess, to complete, the radiator bleed valve o'ring is worn/weeping(so its pushing water out),tape up the loom.
redo the iterior(fit new carpets and make up some seat rails for my jamex reclining buckets, refit the audio)
give the exterior a bit of a cut....

as it turns out I dont need a new battery:),the maintenance free one died,I had another dead one(I mean really dead, died about 4 or 5 years back, didnt even bubble on charge, and when charged off the car wouldnt make much difference). I put some stuff in it called INOX,$12 and the thing works fine...holds a charge for a few days and its still holding, and still able to start the car:).kinda stoked about that.

ok...so I started to have a look at the alternate "y pipe" with 2 front manifolds fitted to the v6.

(the perks of having a spare engine to play with I guess...) anyway I fitted a spare front manifold to the rear bank, started to get some old y-pipes cut up to tack it together to see if it could work.
then figured I should check to see if it was likely to clear the drive shaft support bearing carrier(as Im running the tubby box)...(so cut another one down to close to the right size, perks of keeping odd bits:))and its really tight, I could probably do it. but there is the cross member in there aswell that adds to the restrictive nature of the job:(

Im gonna flag that idea, and Ive fixed up the old y pipe and left the normal manifolds on for now. its quiet and leak free, so it should get legal easy enough as is.

hmmmmm
