Hi,

Sorry for jumping straight in with a technical question before introduction myself, but I need a quick answer to an ECU question I have so I can get my MR2 back on the road - and your site was recommended to me by one of your members.

My 1992 MK2 Rev2 N/A T-Bar G-Limited Automatic has an ECU problem. I need a replacement ECU. The one in the car is "89661-17360 3S-G A241E", however, the only ones I can find for sale second hand are "89661-17290 3S-G A241E".

They appear to be the same item but I'm just curious as to what the difference might be? I'm assuming there must be a difference otherwise why have two different parts.

If anyone knows the difference or knows if these items are interchangeable then please let me know so I can order a replacement ECU and get my car back on the road.

Many thanks,
mawby - from mkivsupra.net

Basically yours is a rev2 and the 89661-17290 is a rev1 auto ecu, it will work bar 1 wire!

If you just plug it in it will work but the engine will cut out after 2 seconds, this is because the location of the circuit opening relay holding wire (FC) is in different pin locations on a rev1/rev2.

If you relocate this one pin it should work perfectly.... i think it is on pin A14 on rev1's and pin B17 on rev2's but please don't quote me on that, that is just from memory.

The reason you can only find rev1 auto ecu's in the UK is because they were only made from 89-91 in auto form here, so yours must be a rev2 import.

I would recommend finding a jap import rev2 auto ecu in all honesty, unless you repin the rev1 ecu which will work.

Oh and welcome to TB, the font of all Mr2 knowledge.

Just had another quick thought.... UK rev1 auto's all came with the spunky 3s-fe motor... if your rev2 has a 3sge fitted then ignore my last post, it won't work at all and you will definately need a Jap auto rev2 ecu.

After a few minutes research it would appear ALL JDM auto's were 3sge engined, so please ignore the first post, only a rev2 JDM auto ecu will do for you.We only got the 3sfe in auto form.

Welcome Mawby, now pay up like I've done with your site :rlol:It's nice being on the other side of the fence. Now where my list of 101 things that people repeatedly do that annoys me... I feel the need to try a few out! :)

Anyway, just to confirm yes my car is a Rev2 import, and yes it does have the 3S-GE engine in it. (Thankfully as I was able to confirm the ECU was at fault by swapping it for the one in my Gen5 Celica - same engine, but manual so although the car started I couldn't actually drive it)

So I'm on the hunt for a 89661-17360 then. Shame as there were none on ebay and very few hits from google at all. :(

Thanks Paul for your help.

I'm having no luck at all finding that particular ECU. :( Bloody typical. So I might be forced to send it off to be repaired. Has anyone had any experience of this (http://www.the-ecu-doctor.co.uk/) company? Or can anyone recommend somewhere else?

Hey hey Mawby.. Welcome along.

I'll ask my local MR2 specialist, he may have an auto ECU kicking around, I know he broke one recently.

Hi Ollie

I may have found an ECU. A bit of phoning around and I should have one for £45. Fingers crossed it works OK and fixes all the problems.
