Hi Guys,

I've been lurking round the forums now gathering info and looking for the perfect donor vehicle.

Yesterday I picked up a 93 V6 Camry with 1 owner and 64,000 miles. The car runs great and the long drive home was a pleasure. I chuffed to bits with it lol

So, now its time to crack on with my swap.

I'll be spending a few days reading the guides for removing the engine from the Camry and getting a list together of everything I need to keep. I've signed up as a Big Member too

Heres is my mr2 as it sits now waiting for a new caliper.

http://forums.twobrutal.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=1186&d=1249820468

It currently is a rev3 3SGE UK T-Bar with 80,000 miles and nice leather interior.

Mods include

HSD Coilovers
High & Tight prothane bushes
Graphite Grey standard wheels
Drilled and Grooved discs
J.Mec sports modified ECU with 8100rpm limit

Heres the Camry, seems a shame to break her up, but it'll be worth it.

http://forums.twobrutal.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=1187&d=1249821113

Once the MR2 has the caliper back on I can get the camry in to position for the garage and get cracking.

I'm hoping to use the search as much I can but might have to ask a few questions :-)

Cheers
Chris

Welcome to 2Brutal!

I was the same when I drove my Camry for 8 months before putting it in for conversion, a really smooth comfortable car to travel around in. Was a bit loathed to break it but was worth it in the end.

big downer today for my project.

The 2 went in for it's MOT so I can get it back on the road whilst I strip the camry.

However, it's failed on the sills. They are both pretty rotten by the look of it. My bodyshop reckons it could be inner sill aswell but won't be able to tell until they get the outers off.

Couple that with some small rust I have on the rear arches.

He reckons each sill is a days labour plus parts and each rear arch a days labour & parts. If I was getting the whole lot done its nearly £2k!!!!! Not worth it whatsoever.

What do you guys think is my best option? I've allready listed my cars for sale breaking etc.. just cus I was gutted.

I'm thinking now maybe I'm better to repair it?

I can't really afford alot or even to buy a new mr2, unless its dirt cheap and solid.

<:(

Could you check out how bad the sills are yourself? May not be as bad as you think?

I've just had the drivers sill repaired for the MOT, had a good poke around with a screwdriver to determine how bad it was, turned out just the outer sill had gone in one patch.

Barronmr
13-08-2009, 16:09
Could you post the list of failures on the this thread to give us a better idea of the problems.

Don't think repairing sills would cost anywhere near that much.

boyleonthebum
13-08-2009, 16:24
hi,

It's one failre for a section of the nearside sill.

I allready knew the back of the sills near the rear wheels was rotten and needed some work.

It's just when I took it to the bodyshop they've said both sills need replacing.

I could just have it bodge repaired for the MOT, but i'd rather it be done properly or not at all

snowtigger
13-08-2009, 16:47
Go to another garage 2k is way too much 300 each side if outer and inners need doing but if it just needs patching or the outer sill doing your laughing , personaly I would get a 2nd opinion post some picks up where he's failed it, I've just had my mk1 mot failed on a load of mechanicals but he said the body is pretty solid for a 25 year old car

boyleonthebum
13-08-2009, 16:50
I'll post some pics up when I get home.

Does anyone know if you can still get replacement sills?

I did read that ford ka sills were a good match?

dave5526
13-08-2009, 17:12
'89 fiesta van sills are near identical profile. Not sure about a KA, the missus had one and dont remember them resembling the mr2 sills but I didnt pay it much attention tbh.

I had a quote of £700 to replace inner and outer sills both sides of the rev2 I bought for my 2gr project, but in the end I found a rev2/3 hybrid shell with a knackered engine at a good price and will be breaking the rusted one to get my money back.

quick update!

I've broken up most of my MR2 a re couped enough money to start looking for a replacement. Going to look for a REV3 import this time

Project is still on

well done mate keep it updated!

boyleonthebum
23-08-2010, 14:38
Right Guys, it's been a long time but I am back on it.

Basically after getting right peed off with the last MR2 I got rid of everything (apart from a few bits knocking about in the garage). Stupidly I got rid of the camry too, I didn't think I'd have a need for it at the time

Anyway, this weekend I picked up a nice Import Rev1 T-Bar with a kocking bottom end from it's 3SGE engine. It didn't costs too much and the shell is in great condition compared to my UK Rev3 :icon_rolleyes:

It's needs a few bits of the body tidying up and I'd like to give it fresh paint (REV1 red isn't that appealing).

As a bonus the car came with some Sebring Split Rims, which some noob has painted with a brush!!! I'll be getting thse refurbished too.

So the plan from now forward is to crack on getting the car up to scratch (suspension, brakes, interior, exterior etc...) and keeping my eye out for the right donor car/engine, as V6 is still the way forward for me :icon_razz:

I'll try get a pic of the 2 up later.

a quick update :-)

Today saw the arrival of my engine. It's come with gearbox (rev1 mk2), fidenza flywheel, 6 paddle clutch, engine mount, ECU, turbo fuel pump and I believe ported heads. It was the engine taken from Chriss's vandalized MK1.. From what I'm told this engine had the full Woodsport treatment 2 years ago when first installed in the MK1.

I'd cleaned out my garage in preparation and have done some bodywork on the MR2 and started removing the crappy paint from the wheels.

So it's all go from here. Just waiting for my mate to get his engine crane round, then we'll start getting the old out and the new in!

Just been fitting my clutch cylinder to the new gearbox and noticed this

http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2010/09/125.jpg

This was put together by mr woods, is it normal not to have a cover on there?

snowtigger
14-09-2010, 20:44
Yes and if you ever find one that fits or isn't rusted to bits dibs on it. it's not the first mk1.5 or mk1 engine swop that I've seen that doesn't have a clutch cover fitted, basically if you never had one or there never was one how do you expect some one to fit one?
Some thing for nick or Adam in carbon or alloy maybe.

Steve-x-edge

I don't have mine on there, I don't know why.. It was on one day then I took it off.. But never put it back on.

Hi Guys,

Just starting the wiring and trying to follow the guide, but as this has allready been in a MK1 its not that simple :-)

Can anyone tell me what these wires are here for?

http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2010/10/3.jpg

http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2010/10/4.jpg

I'm still on the first step of the guide doing the starter relay, thought I had found the thick red/black wire and white ones in the loom in the boot, but then came across these :S

Paul Woods
02-10-2010, 17:43
Sorry mate there is no way i can give you definate answers about wiring just from pictures over the forum, i can help but please do not take it as gospel as i'm not there to 100% identify the wires. I'd hate for you to wire something based on what i thought was correct and it cause a problem.

Having said that this is what i "think"...

Thick whites go to your engine bay fusebox main terminals, black/red looks like starter energiser, w/b is earth. That's the best i can do just looking at pics.

boyleonthebum
02-10-2010, 19:02
cheers Paul, no problem with you not giving definate answers. I'm on a steep learning curve :-)

When I re-read through the guide I've come to the same conclusion as above.

dgh938peg
04-10-2010, 09:43
Looks to me like you're missing this bit..... (between sump & gearbox)

boyleonthebum
04-10-2010, 10:52
is that a camry part? or is this part of the MR2 gearbox?

dgh938peg
04-10-2010, 13:59
It's a cammie part mate. There are (2) bolt holes in it that do not match up with the MR2 box bu considering there's a flimsy bit of tin there on a 3SGE it serves no mechanical / strength purpose other than to keep crap out.

boyleonthebum
04-10-2010, 14:50
mmmm, I'm not going to have that part then.

If it's purely for keeping the crap out then thats ok. I've templated out a cover to go on there, which I'll be getting sorted soon.

boyleonthebum
04-10-2010, 14:54
thought i'd post a pic of Saturday.

I spent the whole day with the car, finishing off the coolant hoses and starting the wiring.

The wiring turns out to not be as bad as I thought. Go through it logically and test the wires and double check the pin out references. It's all good

http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2010/10/22.jpg

Cup of coffee, bakewell tart, pauls wiring guide and a nice new soldering iron to play with

adamh
04-10-2010, 20:43
bakewell tart now we are talkin!, did you manage to get any wiring done? i am just preparing to wire .

boyleonthebum
04-10-2010, 21:18
Oh yeah, I got to about page 20 in the guide. Done the starter relay and COR.

My biggest problem is the dark lol. But I've solved that today by getting a floodlight from b&q, I'll be able to get more done now :)

boyleonthebum
10-10-2010, 13:55
I'm very excited LOL, just finishing the wiring. I have a few questions though to ask before I am fully finished with it.

In the guide when putting power to the fusebox, it says there is a black wire and a white wire to join together to power the fusebox. All I can find on mine is two white wires which paul has previously joined together for the power. There is also a big (alot bigger than the others) red and black wire, which was previously just left.

http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2010/10/44.jpg

Do you think I just leave the power lines as Paul had it for the MK1?

How many wires would you expect to be left with? Here are all the wires I have which are not connected to anything now. Look ok?

http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2010/10/45.jpg

http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2010/10/46.jpg

Last thing, in the boot of my MK2 was this unit, cooling fan thing. Does this need to be used anywhere now?

http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2010/10/47.jpg

Cheers Guys

It's alive!!!:)

Bit smokey to start with but it's fine now. Nice and loud with no exhaust.

Few things to tidy up now, and fluid levels to check, then it's on to getting the downpipes fabbed up.

Also considering sorting coilovers and polybushes before I get it back on the road. Brakes need doing too.

Thought it was time for an update

Not alots been going on with the car apart from I've been collecting a few parts and tools.

Progress is slow due to my Son  arriving a few weeeks back and the amazing weather.

Soon to be fitted (waiting around at home) is

HSD Coilovers
Full set of Poly Eurethane Bushes
UK Clocks
REV3 rear centre panel to go with my rev3 lights
Apexi GT Single Exit Exhaust

I've got myself air tools now and tommorow I am picking up a MIG Welder with the hope to fabricate the downpipes to the exhaust myself (with help from the Mrs's brother)

Wiring in a starter button too, to replace the cigarette lighter.

My plan is to get this thing on the road (finished) before my birthday, end of January.

Things still to get are

Braided Brake Lines
Discs & Pads
And some sort of styling, not sure what yet
Spraying the car and refurbing the wheels

THREAD/PROJECT resurrection!

It's about time I did a little update and did some work on the car!

Since my last post I have fitted

HSD Coilovers
Full Polybush set
UK Clocks
Rev 3 Lights
Momo Steering Wheel

And I have just about finished getting my bodykit parts to fit. I managed to get hold of a border fron, toms rear and toms side skirts from Rogue in an ebay clearout. The sideskirts were terrible and still aren't great but i'm just about happy with them now. The front and rear are ok for the job.

http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2011/07/83.jpg

My paint arrived this morning so I'm going to be getting on with that. I've taken a lead from Nik and have got rustoleum paint in Satin White.Tested it this morning on one of the engine side panels and it looks awesome :icon_mrgreen:

Biggest things other than paint left do do are downpipes and exhaust & brakes.

boyleonthebum
15-07-2011, 09:32
started putting primer down last night on the engine panel pieces. The rustoleum paint is pretty awesome.

This piece is finished in the satin white colour i'm going for. Its a bit of a dark pic though :-)

Nice work, what rig are you using for spraying or is it all from aerosols?

boyleonthebum
15-07-2011, 20:58
I do have an earlex hvlp spray system but I don't get on with it. I'm using rustoleum aerosols for this!! I can get really good finish with aerosol but I've only really done small bits before so this is a new task :)

racerADS
19-07-2011, 13:38
So you are spraying the whole car, primer then top coat all from aerosols?

Cheeky question, how many cans do you think it's going to take for the whole car? And do you have a good supplier?

My car, i have recently discovered, has been resprayed at some point in a different shade than the toyota original. Great... So its copy a manky shade of red or find a new colour entirely...

boyleonthebum
19-07-2011, 13:52
yeah that's right, it could go either way :-) I'm not expecting a show finish.

Have a look through Niks thread, he was the inspiration and has done the same. http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?17856-Nik-s-Mk1.5-aka-ZOMBIE-%28aka-KYTII%29/page28

On that page is a link to the supplier for the paint. He reckons about 8 cans, but that's for a MK1. I've got 9 of each but I reckon it will take more, although I am having carbon wrapped bonnet and boot lid until I can afford the real deal.

racerADS
19-07-2011, 14:40
That's great info, looks good on Niks car and on your panel. Defo worth a bash in my case. Which type of primer did you use? They seem to have loads available. Did you just apply straight to your old paint or sand it first?
Cheers

boyleonthebum
25-07-2011, 08:15
good weather yesterday meant I could continue doing a little painting. I've done primer on the rear bumper and around the top of the boot area and engine bay. I've also laid down the white around the engine bay and boot area and put some final paint on the engine lid and side panels.

More good weather will see primer on the whole rear section of the car :icon_mrgreen:

done some more work on it tonight lol

I wasn't going to bother but I wouldn't have been truely happy if I didn't. Some of you will notice the side skirt on the pictures above. It has a curve where it meets the side strip of the car above the vent.

Anyway I decided tonight to sort these out. Almost done on the drivers side and a bit more work required on the passenger.

no pictures today as my smart phone doesn't like batteries!

But, yesterday I finished sorting the side skirts and more importantly finished the entire exhaust system :D Even moved the car round my drive a bit

I didn't have the right gaskets though for where the downpipes go into the manifolds (so blowing a bit there) but I'll sort that soon.
