View Full Version : Shadeh's MK 1.5 project
Hi guys, This is my project which has been going on a while, I have a rev2 tubby engine + all extras needed for a swap, I was going to put this in my mk2 but I have decided to go down the v6 route for that! Me and my mate should be doing this swap and it will hopefully make a nice track car. First of all I have a few questions incase anyone knows about the engine mounts.. do I have to get some made and welded or is it a case of modifying them, gonna start dropping the 4age tonight, opinions welcome!
The car:

Next part of this is it is going to Nathan at mrtwos for the turbo engine to be put in so there will be more pics around july time!
So I got my gt 4 discs off the hubs today, was a right mofo too, any here is pics of the disc and mk 1 disc

This is a spacer used on the disc which also made it a 5 stud for celica but I can knock out the bolts hopefully to match the mk 1
http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2009/08/59.jpg
To my suprise the gt 4 discs were already machined to fit the mk 1 hub! I also tested this and it was all good, here is a pic with the mk 1 disc on top matching up the holes :D :yahoo:

Sorry, simply not good enough.
Engine back out - You've not taken the obligatory "standing in the engine bay" shot :photos:
But good speedy work all the same.
Don't forget to factor a drain off system if you're going to vent the boot lid. Water WILL get in there so make sure it can get out.
good luck man, i was reading thinking, yer....this is great he's getting his teeth stuck in man, some questions to answer and some guidance will be needed.. pictures progressing nicely, action is starting..., quote:

thats a cracking punchline lol made me titter! cool either way i guess, it is fun to do it yourself but to have the luxury of someone else loosing their skin is also good!! i wish you luck and hope it comes out a good job

wow
you really are cracking on with it well....
i was told those disc's were machine but was not entirely sure.. glad they are.

Hi guys, am looking around for hosing on the intercooler, does anyone know how much I need and what angles etc, the website I am looking at is http://www.viperperformance.co.uk/index.php am going to mount it fairly central for in the boot. Any help would be appreciated thanks
this is how i did mine
http://forums.twobrutal.com/showthread.php?t=699&highlight=podges+intercooler
hi podge I really like the way you did yours but I'm not too sure about cutting a hole in the boot cause won't that just cause hot air off the exhaust to come in? also what did you you use for making the box and where di you get your pipes from.. even though it was a long time ago
I've seen vents fitted to the side of the boot and also more commonly a vent fitted to the top of the boot lid then exiting like Podge's.
the box was made from stainless steel folded it myself and got the sylicone bends of ebay just used 90s and one 35 with straight stainless pipe in between. on the heat note, never realy got any off the exhaust as my exhaust went straight out not coiled under the boot floor. the peaguot 205 gti fans also kept things very cool.
Right so I'm expecting it back later on today to mot it :yahoo:
For cooling the intercooler in the boot I was thinking of putting some mk1 side vents on the side of it.. will have a look if they fit nicely once I get it back, and also, what do you guys think about a suburu impreza bonnet scoop on top of the boot?

too big imho and think it is too curvy for the mk1, but it might blend very good, who knows
you planning on installing this looking backwards i believe yes?
the isuzu trooper bonnet vent was what i discovered fitted perfectly into the lines of the mk1 engine and boot lid..
Not sure which way to mount it I thought facing toward the back window.. also watching a trooper scoop on eBay
Not sure which way to mount it I thought facing toward the back window.. also watching a trooper scoop on eBay
if you face it towards the back window, air will not go in as it is a dead spot, if you face it backwards, it will at least be able to get some air in there by the aerodynamics of the mk1, as air will circulate above the scoop and thus some of it will go in, planning on using some kind of fans? this will help i think
now i am not an expert so i might as well have it very wrong.

As on imoc, after taking a good look at your engine in the bay i am concerned about the height it has been hung, it looks to be sitting way too low in the bay, i think you will have ground clearance issues there mate.
Right so when I am doing 70 on the motorway the revs are under 3k so this must mean I am in kilometres still, any idea where I get a stef delimiter and converter thingy? Also since it is my first mr2 turbo I'm not sure how long to leave the car on after a hard drive to let the turbo cool down or how long to drive granny like so I can switch off when I get somewhere. Also the engine was mounted quite low, gives ok clearance on roads and big bumps across roads, but square bumps I went over one tonight and heard a big clunk :(
Hopefully be cutting some holes into the boot and putting vents in v soon, and booking it in for welding to get the strength back in the chassis, anyway, see you at jae tomorrow!
Right so drove to JAE with the boot lid off and there was no problem with cooling so thats all good, just be cutting holes soon! I found out why the engine is so low, it's cause I was recommended to buy 30mm drop of the springs, which I foolishly didn't check and with a heavier engine the car is on a 40mm drop which is way too much, so I think I'll be looking at stiffer springs. At the mo it's having welding done underneath to put the strength back into it an then I'll see about the springs :s

Now today I got it onto some ramps and jacked up the back of the car to waxoyl it, also the only place to do it was at parents because I've peed off my neighbours enough hahah, plus I didn't want waX dripping off onto the driveway and and road, am doing the3 waxoyl because of 200 quid of welding it needed for mot, so here is some pics :)

I have to say after driving it for a week now, I love the instant speed the engine delivers but those celica brakes are amazing! They feel so much better than the other mk1 I have which is mainly stock and they will definitely stop you as good as a car with abs, big thanks to pistol pete for selling me them

not being funny but arnt you suppost to wax oil inside the panels as you have found out the mr2 rusts inside out when i did the rear arches on mine i had that much wax pumped in any small gap it ozzed out of but at least it left no bare metal inside the outside can be taken care of every time its washed with touch up if you catch it fast enough
Yeah you're right, but I am probably going to repair my wings first or even go for fibreglass ones, need to fix my arch lining so it doesn't rub on the 16s too!

have a look for some good secondhand ones the guy on ebay breaking the blue one near you wants £100 for the pair
Will let you know about wings, this is the trim I need, the black plastic on LHS, this is for a friend

just one not all three
had a flat tyre today, which peed me off
sorted now tho by kwik fit heh, soon I will be getting the :woc: out and making holes for hot air to go out the engine lid.. and cold air to come in, should be fun :D
So I've taken off the side panels as you can see which helps a little for cooling. Was looking into those roof scoops but eveyrone says they are cr@p so I think I will stick with cutting my rain tray in the lid out and putting fans in, similar to a rogue lid but not so extravagant. One fan for hot air out and one for cold into the air filter, thanks to Lewis for recommending this :D Do you guys think I should get thin fans.. something like the SPALS or what.. ?!
http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2009/09/201.jpg
http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2009/09/202.jpg
The spoilerless mk1 begins to grow on me!
both lid fans should be used to extract hot air not suck air in.
For the intake, i'd look at getting a direct feed of cold air from an additional side vent on the fuel flap side. This has been done on many mk1s.
OK mate, sounds good
Right! The side panels are back on, I found a guy on eBay who does SPAL fans so went upto his warehouse yesterday and picked up two fans. Have done a temporary install too :D
First the grinder came out and I cut out the rain trays

Then I fitted both fans with some temporary cable ties for now, while I go find some bolts that fit  Hope you like.. comments welcome
