Not that we've been keeping this one from being on TwoBrutal but have been steaming through the swap and getting a bit of advice here & there from Paul via pm.

Now this little beauty is about ready.....

Michael fell in love with mine when we did the MR2OC French trip back in June. I left most of France with hearing trouble. So for the past 2 months he's been spending, cleaning & polishing while i've been putting it back together for him.

The big difference being is this car is a cruiser NOT a speed wagon. Michael wants it for our big pan-european trips. If he wants outright speed - he'll just take his 400bhp MR2 for a spin (this is an Auto as well). So, to the best of my knowledge, this is the UK, and maybe world, first AUTO V6 CONVERSION.

what we know so far;

For electrical ease we are using the Camry box. i didn't fancy trying to configure either the MR2 Auto ECU to talk to the Camry engine bit or The Camry ECU talking to the MR2 box. Yes he knows the Camry box is a bit lazy but that's partly the point of the car. The only slight niggle with using the Camry box is that it don't fit the MR2 bay!

No so much a big issue. It interfere's with the N/S chassis rail by approx 15mm. I intend to chop a box into the rail to allow 15mm clearance anr reinforce it all so no rigidity (or minimal) is lost.

The gearbox mounts are in completely the wrong place, so we're gonna have to fabricate up all the 3 mounts on that side. 4veeSix is doing our engine mount, which is our only real point of reference! Everything has to be taken from there!

Driveshafts! Again, not so much of an issue, more a minor thing to conquer. Will use the 1MZ shafts and adapt the ends to fit the MR2 hubs - simples!

Hook up the selector & and should be pretty much there.

Electrically i am not so sure. obviously the COR to wire up and the 4th plug plus the OBDII connector.... ..... hmmmm not so sure on that bit!

Mechanically i can get it to work.... electrically i am papping it at the mo!

Dan :D

Really like the look of the kit and colour. It'lll be one awesome cruiser when it's finished. You'll get there one way or another :)

Am i right in saying that, if the COR is wired, it will start?

Looking great, he must have some serious spare time to polish that lot!

Know what you mean about the electrics, I've started today getting ready to drop the VZ, everything is disconnected, just waiting for my engine crane to arrive. It's the 2GR electrics that have me worried, especially with a Link ECU going on.

I was like that when I've done engine swops in the past, get the mechanicals in first and working then worry about electrics, fuel, cooling.

As long as it's mounted correctly in the engine bay you can get over most things, i personaly hate electrics I must admit they scare the living crap out of me I've blown at least 3 ecus by putting new batterys on cars and yes I did put them on the right terminals.

I can do most stuff my self but working out the maths to mount engines in the correct relationship to axles and suspension,I take my hat of to people who fit different manufactures engines into cars they were not designed for, before I started down the mr2 v6 route I was thinking about a Honda vtec into a mini swop and what put me of was torque steer through the steered wheels.

Am i right in saying that, if the COR is wired, it will start?

On the mk2 the COR only needs 1 wire to make it work, the other 4 wires on that relay are already wired up.So connecting the G/R COR wire will make the pump run.... nothing else mind you.

Power up the ecu, coilpack, injectors ,afm and it will run.

Stunning looking engine by the way, best of luck with this build.

Stunning looking engine, good luck with the swap. Can I ask what wheels they are as they look very tasty & also look like they have some nice caliper clearance. :)

Thanks for the info Paul, don't suppose there's a wiring guide or even a pin out diagram for the 1MZ, that'll give me more of a clue.

Thanks bud

Rob - not my car and have no idea but it does say somewhere on the 58page build guide on MR2OC

Definitely walk before running here. Will get the engine mounted before worrying about electrics! ;)

Michael & Adie got the standard 2l & Auto Box out so the :woc: came out last night :D

Cut a gouge out the N/S chassis rail about 250mm long by 30mm wide. (Pics later), this i will stiffen with 4mm plate (I'll do this after i've checked it all fits). The hole is necessary to fit the Camry box in. Much to my displeasure i've had to cut off the N/S gearbox mount bracket. Was hoping to leave it in situ but sits too low. Lifting it by around 30mm will mean using the MR2 mounts in some fashion again.

So Saturday pm we should be ready to dummy fit engine and my old Camry box so that we can construct the 3 necessary gearbox mounts. Then the engine will be back out Tidy up / finish welding the mounts then the engine can go back in for sure!

Big hole!

Next to dummy fit engine & make the mounts.

Gotta love someone who is prepared to film a mate cutting holes in his perfectly good chassis

Vandal! :)

:) :) :)
just cracked out the grinder, michael didn't even bat an eyelid!!! "are you sure you want to do this michael?"

So taking my old auto box down this afternoon - his has been fully rebuilt & new torque converter. We'll use mine to chuck in today with the engine (on your lovely mount tony ;) ) and measure up for all the special mounts. I hope to make these at work Monday/Tuesday so I'm not going on holiday for a week leaving the engine half suspended

Im going to have to do similar surgery on my mk3 to fit the 3s in. Not looking forward to attacking it with a grinder. Still, .....needs to be done lol

Can anyone confirm if this is a world first (although it's not running yet LOL)

Other info needed!

As we only have Tony's wonderful mount for reference can someone get us a few mk2 dimensions.

(1) Open the engine cover and put a plank of wood or straight edge across the inspection panels. Measure the gap between the plank and the top of the plenum

(2) the gap between the back straight edge of the intake plenum to the firewall (exactly how close is it to the engine cover catch also?!!??)

There may be something else but cannot remember for now!

Paul Woods

Why not just put a plank across that engine bay and hang the engine that way? The ribs on top of the plenum chamber are parallel and level with the engine so you can use those to centre it and align it on every axis.

Allow 5mm of rubber drop on the left side mount when it takes the full weight of the engine/box, so factor that it or it will end up low on the left side.

As far as i'm aware this is a first.I must admit if i was doing one i would have used the Mr2 auto box instead of the camry one, no chassis cutting, the engine and box would hang on standard mounts and mechanically the shifter cable etc all work.I guess i just see it as an easier route.

Cheers Paul and extremely informative mate!

Will certainly allow 5mm on the rubber drop & to be honest i hadn't thought of that - so top marks there buddy

The reasons behind using the Camry box is - as you know Paul - i fear electrics like the plague :D :D :D and being a mechanical engineer i love a challenge. Micheal knows (from his 3SGTE 400hp Auto) that the MR2 Auto box gives up around 250hp. For his other car he had an extremely expensive Level-10 unit fitted.

The other reasons that swayed our decision onto the Camry box was;
- Redline differences 6500rpm opposed to 7250rpm
- MR2 being a sporty box opposed to the Camry's laziness (this is a tourer)
- Knowing how soft the MR2 Auto is.

Well,

This one is nearing the end this month. He's taking it on the Highland Drive mid April so needs to be running fairly soon to "bed in"

We now have the engine in and suspended on 3 mounts on the Camry box. Subframe fitted, rear mount being laser cut.

Stroke of luck we've had today. Turbo outer shafts fit on the Camry inners! This is saving having to make new shafts which is obviously a massive plus. (especially for spares)

So my turbo is now missing it's rear hubs and shafts <cough> on loan :)

All we have left to do is;

- Fluids
- Rear mount (nearly done)
- Custom bracket for the selector
- Wiring

Bloody great to be pioneering on this sort of stuff (eh Paul :D )

So as far as the wiring goes, is there any guide for the 1mz?

Cheers fellas!
