Hi folks, i am looking to build my own custom welded in rollcage on my mk1 v8, more for chassis stiffening than being safe if the car went on its roof.

Does anyone know what sort of tube diameter/wall thickness i should be using as a bare minimum? I have a pipe bender so building one is not a problem.

Does anyone have a bolt-in mk1 cage for sale? That would give me a fantastic starting point to modify from and weld in permanently onto the chassis.

Haven't looked at AW cages since Safety Dynamics' version(available through Demon Tweeks) a while back. However(for what it's worth)...a good friend who runs this ~13s capable EF CRX(NA, too):

...has used 45mm diameter tubing, with 3.5mm(seems an odd size??) wall thickness...

get in touch with a rollcage manufacturer, theres bound to be one up your way somewhere. ask them what tubing they use, and theyll usually sell you some cheap. theres an awesome rollcage builder about 10 miles from me, he builds FIA cages regularly, and the tubing was something like £10/metre, and bends were about £10/metre each (obviously not relevant in your case).

i think most places use 50mm+ tube for the main roll structures, MSA blue book states CDS tubing must be used, minimum sizing of 45x2.5 or 50x2.0. 45x2.5 is a very standard sized tube, personally id probably use 50 for the main roll structures though.

CDS definitely, 50mm main hoop, 45mm the rest. You can by a 5 point bolt in cage for the Mk1 for about £500 - I can put you in touch with the people we get them from for racing (MSA approved cages) send me a PM. You'll save alot of time if you have one of these to start with, you can always add to it.

Hey Paul,

thought you might like to see the rollcage in our dirt track aw11 mk1.5

we can lift the car under the rear floor plate mount of roll cage and its sits on the opposite front wheel only

If you like let me know and I will take some more pics for you

Rollcage material minimum size = 32mmNBx3.25mm or 38mmODx3mm wall thickness medium black pipe, seems to be the minimum for most classes for roll cages/bars in this part of the world(with the exception being sprint cars/midgets being allowed to be chromolly)

and remember bars under compression dont need to be as heavy as those under tension so you can save some weight when you think;)

so build the bit round you heavy and the rest like the layback bars can be like 25mmNBx2.65mm wall or 32mmODx3mm thickness medium black pipe or 32mm x 32mm x 3mm RHS.over engineered, but its you inside it. its not like your setting it up for contact racing..lol

Our cage is made out of 38.1mm seamless rollcage tube 2.5mm or thereabouts wall thickness the tensile strength is way higher, makes sense really it your life on the line in a racing situation

Paul mine was built with 42 OD 3.5 wall med black pipe which is more than the minimum requirements here quite comfortably, im not sure what the regs are for you guys though but i guess that largely depends on what your using it for

also gimmie a yell if youd like some photos of my setup to help give you some ideas perhaps?
