Just did a few rough calcs for reference: thought I'd share them with you all....!;)

1MZ-FE in Camry (2001) returns 17-20mpg (urban), 25-28mpg (m-way).
MR2 Roadster 1ZZ-FE returns 28mpg (urban), 38mpg (m-way).
MK3 fuel tank = 48 litres (12.7 gallon).
Camry weighs in @ 1363kg
Roadster = 975kg.

As the roadster is 27% lighter, the 1MZ-FE should return 27% better economy: 21.6- 25.4mpg (urban), 31.7- 35.6mpg (m-way).

Averaged out to 23 and 33mpg, and to 28mpg for a 50/50 split urban/m-way driving, we get an estimated fuel economy of 355 miles from a tank of petrol in a Mk3 with a 1MZ-FE…….!

On my run back to Worthing from Durham, I got around 300miles from a tank: this is a guesstimate…the real figure may be more or less, as I did not fancy running out of fuel on the M25, so topped up again in Milton Keynes……..!
…but perfectly acceptable to me, considering the engine……….!

Bloody hell those figures look really good.

Havent worked out what i'm doing in my mk1.5 but i think it would work out something like this.

2.0 turbo + heavy right foot= shit mpg.

Great info all joking apart, could be a major factor when people are choosing an engine swap.

Greg, did you go for the extended 5th gear ratio in your box?

Yeh...when I had the AE101 SC Mk1, I emptied a tank in 70miles, once...!!

Mind you..that was with no O2 sensor fitted, so it was overfuelling like a B***h......:rlol:

When I sorted the O2 sensor, I was getting around 220 on a run, and 140-ish urban / spirited driving.......

So...overall, I'm pleased with the 1MZ / Mk3......!

Greg, did you go for the extended 5th gear ratio in your box?

No..I missed out on that one by a few weeks....!

The majority of the motorway driving was at around 70mph (honest, officer!) in 5th @ around 3-3.5k rpm's........

Then, I think one of your next jobs should be an extended 5th for more MPG and relaxed cruising.

In my box for the 5VZ, I've got the 3.625 final drive, instead of the 4.233, for a better use of the torque, and more economical motorway crusing.

Is it worth us turbo guy's doing anything

There's a 3.933 FD ratio out of a Celica ST165 that will increase your gearing by 7% I think it is. There's a tradeoff between acceleration and top speed, as always.

Oh..the cruising is relaxed.....:shades:

I reckon, due to the work involved ripping the box out, stripping, rebuilding, etc...its better to stick with what I have already?

Im planning to fit the TRD Sportivo upgrade, poss with additional underbracing: I'm going with TRD stuff so that when the TRD emblem appears on the rear of the car, people can't just say "thats just a stock Mk3 with a TRD badge on the back...!" :snooty:

I'm trying to keep it a stock-looking as poss: no bodykit, etc.......?

But its VERY tempting to stick the TRD stage2 rear wing on........
Then I might as well get a bodykit........
The slippery slope......

After the Nighthawk, I'm determined to keep any mods quite subtle in appearance: a "sleeper" appeals to me.......:shades:

ps a wolf in sheeps clothing is the way forward greg float like a butterfly and sting like a bee [ as the big man once said ] stock looking all the way or very subtle if you ask me

Those figures sound pretty good Greg,
Tim, i could get impressively low mpg in the mk1.5  was fun though.
I found that a tank of fuel didnt generally last too long either.

Massive amount of fun, not had more than 150 miles out of a tank and that was on a run. I reckon i will cause a fuel shortage in Crayford.

Greg you can change the 5th gear set with the engine/box in situ mate, just drop the gearbox down on that side and remove the end cover, it should just be possible to do it in the car.

Is that the same in mine Paul?

Is it worth doing on the turbo box whith the 2gr should be fun finding out how econmical that is, I did 2 weeks driving in Florida for $55 when it was nearly $2 to the £.

Ah..thats interesting to know, Paul..!
I may look into this in the future.......I have a few other priorities before that, though..!

Regarding the 1MZ v 1ZZ pre-conversion:

Its a totally different beast: you just have so much more of everything.....
Toyota should have offered a V6 Mk3 as a flagship option from the outset.......?

Hi tim, the mk2 turbo box is already 0.73:1 for the 5th gear set, there are no lower gear ratios you can fit to the mk2 turbo gearbox i'm afraid, but if someone does find some then yes replacing them would be just as easy in situ on your car.

Changing final drives is a lot harder, it requires strippage of the box am afraid.

Glad to see yours is doing so well Greg. Mine does around 30 mpg on the 3vz with the longer fifth, as opposed to about 27 to 30 ish ( very gentle cruising) before. I doubt whether I could get that mileage out of a tank on mine, so well done and keep enjoying the car matey. I've driven most incarnations of the roadster and the V6 is my favourite.
Of course I'm biased, but I've owned most of the variations available.
