View Full Version : Mk1 TD replica engine lid

Paul Woods
16-06-2009, 19:51
Only 15 of these Mk1 engine lids were ever made, nearly all of them exist in the US and are no longer in production. This is a replica of the Thomas Designs engine lid that we will shortly be producing in about 4 weeks time.

I am going to be using one of these on my mk1 v8 for cooling reasons but it also suits the "on steroids" style of my car.It will mean i can add two huge fans under the vents.

This thread is for pre-order bookings, no deposits or anything at this stage, i just need to get a rough idea of numbers for the moulder.

http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2009/06/87.jpg

All lids will be sold on an exchange basis for an old mk1 NA lid,i need to use the webbing and underside of a stock mk1 lid to make these.... so either send me your lid or any old one off ebay (cheap as chips!).

Prices are not confirmed as yet but i am hoping the manufacturing costs are kept fairly low and we can supply these somewhere in the £150-£180 region (with old lid taken in exchange)

If you are interested whack your name below, no commitment as yet

Thanks Paul, another fantastic product!

Paul Woods

All noted chaps, i think one of these lids is going to be essential with a 2gr due to its height in the bay, or at the least a SC lid, i won't know for sure until we do the first 2gr mk1.

Thanks for the preliminary orders folks, it gives me a good idea on initial order numbers.

I can ship to hawaii but it won't be cheap i don't think! I will find out rough costs for that.

Paul Woods
17-06-2009, 18:01
Oh just to add i will also be able to supply these painted in your cars body colour at around £75 extra although it should be noted that the colour match may not be exact due to older paint fading. If they are ordered unpainted they will arrive in primer.

snowtigger
17-06-2009, 19:09
well you can paint mine when i get one, you can do the arches the front and rear bumper and the papal bonnet mod so that will probably need painting as well.

Paul Woods
17-06-2009, 19:25
ikari87, i cannot even get a shipping price to hawaii, but as a rough idea the cost of sending this to mexico which is the nearest mainland to you is £112 GBP via the slowest method (25 days), it is £174 GBP to mexico via the quickest (5 days).

Sorry mate that's the best i can do.....

Paul Woods
20-06-2009, 08:58
What's it made of?

The outer shell will be fibreglass finished in thick gelcoat which can then be sanded and painted. This is bonded onto the webbing of a normal NA steel lid and blended in.

I'm interested, what sort of cost to ship to Australia??

Up to now the best i can find is fedex at £93, that is insured for its full value and a 5 day delivery, im sure there is a cheaper/slower way but i can't seem to find it.If you want to organise the courier from your end that too is fine.

Paul Woods
20-06-2009, 10:07
Ok i have been getting a better idea on final pricing for this lid and it is going to work out slightly more than i had planned, so i have decided to offer it in one of two ways to keep costs down for some people.

Option 1: As a ready to fit lid that has been fully bonded and blended into the NA steel webbing/hinge mounts and lid catch, finished in primer is going to cost £190 at this moment in time, (moulding costs are higher than expected) this will be the finished product that will only require paint.I will need an NA lid in exchange to do this.P+P is £15 fully insured.

Option 2: As an outer skin only, meaning i can supply the outer moulded part that you can then bond and blend onto your own cut/dressed NA lid yourself.I can supply it at £145 like this and obviously i do not need an NA lid in exchange for this option.P+P is £12 this way as it is much lighter.

If you could copy/paste the list below and add either "option 1" or "option 2" that would be great, thanks chaps.

I'd be interested also, but there is a guy making another style also.

http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2009/06/160.jpg

he's in the process of getting some flaps designed, so the rain doesn't enter the engine bay. Also, last I heard from him, he pm'd me about some new carbon material, if the clear wasn't my style.

but yours look cool too. maybe I'll order one, but I'm not going to send you a lid, as I live in denmark, and shipping would cost more than if you just picked up on in your country.

Paul Woods
24-06-2009, 06:52
Singularity, thats not a bad looking lid, does it have the hinge mounting points and catch point on it? or same as my lid skin that will need bonding to a normal lids frame? The vents on the TD lid are raked at an angle so water can't get in, unless the rain is going sideways of course!

If you want one i am happy to supply a second hand NA lid from ebay or something, they sell for pennies.

Mr.2x2 , yes i'm afraid shipping and the dollar are totally shit right now.... unless you chaps want to get a US group buy going and i stick a load of them in one box, that might work out better? but the exchange rate is still killing you right now...

Hey Paul.

I've contacted him, and he sent me this sketch:

http://i485.photobucket.com/albums/rr218/AW11_Moyer/mister2_diagram.jpg

He was talking about making it in carbon fiber also, and as for the rain, he is making vent flaps that goes over the holes and forces the water away from the engine bay. They will be able to move and open to let air out while the car is in motion.

This lid does Not require a stock aw11 lid as a base. It's 1 piece (I don't know what you call it) but in my country it's called plexiglass. a clear plastic stiffness is high, but not brittle.

He actually thought my own drawings and ideas was good. I sent him this drawing about ½ year ago, but he's having trouble with funding and the mold needs updates. Anyway, here is the pic I drew and sent him for inspiration:

Yeah, I defo want one of these but ideally I'd like to leave it until the 2GR goes in so Paul can get his eye in on any fitting issues. Plus I don't have a spare engine cover (and am parked on the street!).

Hiya, Paul, are you able to fit a couple of fans under it to suck air up through the intercooler of my SC? If so how much extra? And how much space will they take up, do you need me to measure from the top of the engine bay down to the top of the intercooler? The intercooler on nighthawk sits right on top of the engine so air flow is an issue and I'm thinking of ducting air from the intake fan across the firewall and pointing it across the top of the engine under the intercooler so the fans on top suck the cold air straight through it.

Paul Woods
15-07-2009, 07:06
I will need to wait until the lids come back and then measure them up for fans, i think i can get at least a pair of 8" spals under there.Leave it with me.

Here is an original NA lids underside webbing placed on the lid, after this is bonded as much of this webbing as you like can be trimmed off but i will be supplying them (option1) with the full webbing attached. This makes all of the hinge points and bonnet catch work. For what it's worth i have removed nearly all but the perimeter webbing on NA lids before and they still work ok.... the choice is yours basically!

good lad there won't be that many mk1s in the uk with this on any way so still a rare thing, more often on a mk1.5 you wil see the turbo or supercharged lids tim only when we all turn up at a show will there be one or two of us with them on, that just meens it will be more tb specific as the mk1 oc members seem to have dropped out and the spares are going abroad hope fully.

Hi Paul,

They one you are making for me and sending to Denmark.. If I understand you correctly, then you are saying that the lid webbing can be cut like on my pic here ? if so, I'd like that done to mine, I'll pay extra, if it's not included in the option. I just want it to look good and work good ;D

-seems like the webbing it restricting air, so if it can hold itself without it, I'd like that please ;D

Any news on the fans Paul? I've not got a spare lid yet because I have 2 Mk1s on the drive, one of which I'm selling but was thinking of swapping the lids over and leaving one with tarpaulin on the drive while you do my lid. But I may sell it in the mean time and have to buy a lid. Anyway, let me know about the fans, and if you need to cut any more non structural webbing off to get them in then cut away, doesn't matter what it looks like underneath, I'm not showing it, just needs to be functional.

That blue rear bumper in the pics, is that a custom jobbie? Got any more pics from lower down so I can see what it looks like at the bottom and from the sides.

no it's not custom, I have it om my mk1.5 also.. I've had it on 3 aw11's so far ;D Front, sides and rear bumper is a set.

There are the Euro front, which he also has and is also on the 4agze, and there is the Jap front, which is on my mk1.5.

Pic is 4agze in the front, and my mk1.5 in the back.

Hi Paul, nice to see work progressing on the V8, are there any of these boot lids available or are they all spoken for? If one is available, would it be suitable for the V6 conversion and how hard would it be for me to move the quick release catches (that Woodsport fitted with the V6 conversion) to the new bootlid. What price with postage? and how much extra for finish painting as I'd have to use Halfords spraycans otherwise? and finally how much extra if I can't source a boot lid?
cheers Nik

Ok, well.. just cut it like this then, I guess those bars going to the catch thing isn't restricting air too much.

I take it with the 2gr Paul all the webbing will be comming of apart from the perimeter is there enough space for some fans if needed, Also how hArd is it to do the side vent and relocate the filler.

Is that just cosmetic or will it improve the air flow to the engine.

Paul Woods
28-07-2009, 07:14
Yep all of the webbing will come off with the 2gr tiggs, and a couple of fans added. As for improving airflow i really don't know, it would need some wind tunnel tests to confirm that.

Singularity
29-07-2009, 03:10
Paul, nah.. just let the A letter stay intact.

Snowtigger,

Well.. I've seen my old 4age to 4agze swap open up the engine lid at higher speeds and closing again when slowing down.. this was cause i didn't move the catch at first, and didn't think it would be able to lift the lid.. but sure as hell, my plastic cover from the battery I had just put besides it (not under) flew away. up and out.

There are wind tunnel tests telling us that air hardly moved under there.. but I'm just like.. why the hell did toyota engineers design the IC to be cooled with air that doesn't move ? .. The matter of the fact is, that there has never been REAL tunnel tests made on the aw11.. Only simulations on a computer, and that will not take all factors into consideration.

Those test that were made also stated that the lid wouldn't open.. but why is mine lifting up when I look in the rear view mirror then ?.. ye.. cause those tests are bongus.. that's why.

The real question would be.. well that's cause the fiberglass is lighter than the stock NA steel lid.. Wrong.. NA lid weighs less than SC lid.. it's the shape and the amount of trapped air under the lid that's making it lift up. + it makes a descent amount of air extra if you have the 87+ side intake (shovel shape) Air pressure under the lid is also created earlier, if you have air intake from the trunk - like I had in the 4agze swap car. Hence you don't suck any of the created pressure in through the engine bay.

More air can actually move freely out of the NA lid than of the SC lid.

I've had this discussion before, and I'll make a small video clip of the 2 different lids movenents or no movements in the next 14 days or so. I'll post results. These results will ofc be worth more to me since i have side vents on both sides of the car, and the fuel hatch removed. Also, the car sucks air from the pressure build-up cause the air filter in located in teh engine bay on my mk1.5 and i only have 85 side vent shaped grills. The question for me will be, if the pressure from the inside will move out through the side vents since the outside flow of ar can't get pushed as hard in, as if I had the 87+ grills ..

Also.. It's going to be fun to see, if the TD lid clears more air. I hope it does, but the NA lid still has good clear areas on it for air to pass through. It just can't keep rain out..

Lastly, this opening of the lid is ofc created by air forced up and out, but this force is only big enough to open the lid at speeds around 110+ mph. catch NOT engaged ofc.. The fans in Pauls car will restrict atir at this speed, since the fans will be too slow to move air faster than the natural flow at this speed of air travel through the engine bay.. but the fans will work with positive pressure and move more air through the engine bay at speeds under 110mph, and that is what the car is going to do 99.9% of the time anyway, so who cares about the restriction at 110mph+ :D

Anyway - i'm only buying this lid, cause the SC lid doesn't fit, and needs holes to duct the air - the NA lid lets water in my igniter and alternator.. SO.. I need a closed lid that leads air out also.. aka this TD lid is what I need :D

Chris just one thing to add, the edges of the lid will need sanding down a little, they are moulded oversized by a few mm on purpose so that people can get an exact fit.

Paul Woods
31-07-2009, 19:13
Well the first lid has now been bonded, trimmed and primed, this is how i will be sending them out and will just require sanding down and painting before fitting....

The bonding of the NA underside skin to the TD outer has been a total success though, this is very strong now and very light.

As Paul said it looks pretty much the same although on mine the passenger side scoop touches the roof spoiler but this is due to the gas strut and the lack of cross bracing on my lid making it flex.

I've had to put a threaded rod support behind the latch as well so I can lock the engine lid.

In other words it's probably best to keep or replace the cross bracing unless absolutely necessary. lol

Got your lid Imran Paul would it be possible for your man to mould the inner frame as well then you could mod the inner frame so you could fit the catch anywhere you want making it easier if your putting a v6 in captives would be easy to sort it wouldn't add that much to the price if you take into account people have to ship their own lids to you and then you have to bond the bits together as it could all be done at the moulding stage .Just a thought i'll shut up

Ok folks i have 3 of these TD replica lids left out of the first batch run.... a reminder of what they look like fitted and painted....

http://www.woodsport.org/forum/images/recovered/2005/04/52.jpg

Selling the last 3 for £200 each in primer, meshed and posted. Or £180 in exchange for your old Mk1 NA lid.

I can supply them painted and polished at an extra £100 with no guarantee of an exact colour match to your car for obvious reasons.

You've still got my lid ready for the swop haven't you Paul ?

And any body wanting one of these should know the quality is superb the piccs do not do them justice, in the flesh they look fantastic and are a must for high heat applications.

I can't find a pic of the working prototype we have made, but i am sure it is on the forum somewhere.... prices should be in the £200-£250 region for a primed lid ready to bolt on.

Not trying to be a pain in the arse but i feel it needs to be said.
That is not anything like a Thomas Design engine lid at all other than the fact that it has two big vents. Not knocking the product as i just found out about this and will be buying one as soon as i finish up this engine swap i am in the middle of now.
I have an original Thomas Design engine lid on one of my aw11's right now, here's some pics.

You are correct, ours is a replica lid in the same style as the TD lid, not a direct copy, mainly because the original TD lid looks like two cornflake boxes stuck to a SC lid. I much prefer our version but i'm bound to say that :)

Don't know if you have answered this question or not but will the SC lid work for this and can you ship to a U.S. military base? APO(city), AP(state) 96367

PW's lid is better imo. I'm biased but it's better judged imo, no offence to fans of the original intended.

At long last i am pleased to announce we will have a Mk2 version of the Woodsport TD engine lid available from Friday, it has taken a long time to get this to a finished product and it is finally ready.

I will have full pictures of them on Friday night, the lid will cost around £240 fully bonded and ready to fit and will come in grey primer.

Paul Woods
21-11-2010, 08:32
I have two Mk1 lids left from the first production run folks, so i'm dropping the price to £150 each to clear, this will get you a fully bonded ready to fit lid in primer.

They don't come any cheaper than that unless you want to bond and prime them yourself in which case i can sell the skin for £120 on its own.

Cheers.

I still have my Mk1 TD lid purchased from the original buy 2 years ago. I never did fit it. It is painted mat black and is still in the bubble wrap unused. Pristine prime and brand new. Anyone still looking for one of these very sought after lids?

Bump. Hi All. I still have this lid and am moving house. Was nearly £300 from Paul painted. Who wants to make me an offer. I'm in Northamptonshire, 15 miles from Northampton and 25 miles from MK. It's in the roof of my garage gathering dust.

Hi Patrick,

That would be great, all I actually need are the scoops so I can graft them onto a mk2 lid.

No rush at all, I just really fancy something like that.

I couldn't quite make up my mind on the turbo lid, but I do like the TRD ones, maybe a little lower profile though.

We are having the snorkel slightly remodelled, it's a very tight fit over the C pillar and although it just fits it's far from ideal, it looks like there could have been a problem with the original which is amplified by ours being made of a thicker and better quality. So the new mold for this will make them a better fit.

Loving your Plumley spoiler by the way Tommy, that's on my to do list on my current car, it looks bang on.

Hi all. I got Geoff's message, but am bumping this thread again. The lid is still for sale if anyone is interested in it. It is still in the roof of my garage and still in the bubble wrap that Paul sent it in minus the huge card box he packed it in. I haven't even opened it. Impulse buy that I fully intended to put on my mk1, but never did.

Offers welcome.

Stephen.

Ok, any chance I can get one of these?

Paul Woods
13-02-2014, 06:41
It's the shipping, i just can't find a courier to Hawaii or if i do it is double the cost than it would be to the USA.

The best could do would be to send one to the US mainland and if you can get someone to forward it from there.

Alex170984

Well the first lid has now been bonded, trimmed and primed, this is how i will be sending them out and will just require sanding down and painting before fitting....

http://www.woodsport.org/forum/images/recovered/2005/04/52.jpg

The bonding of the NA underside skin to the TD outer has been a total success though, this is very strong now and very light.

Are you still making these paul?

I'm stuck between this, your buddyclub replica front splitter and these http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/251447845279?ru=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.co.uk%2Fsch% 2Fi.html%3F_sacat%3D0%26_from%3DR40%26_nkw%3D25144 7845279%26_rdc%3D1

I would buy all of them but it wouldn't go down well with the GF. The engine lid would be handy though :)

How long would you require my engine lid for? Mine was mopped in August and it hasn't gotten dirty as I haven't used it, so if you could match the current colour i'd like a paintjob done on it too :)

The car should be running again tomorrow as a new Battery is going to be purchased then it'll be tucked up in my new garage and it's too wet and horrible to use it at the moment anyway.

How does this affect the breathability of the standard mk1 engine?

Tommytank
14-02-2014, 14:47
Considering the air intake picks up outwith the engine bay... No effect whatsoever is my guess!!

Paul Woods
14-02-2014, 16:30
I don't need your NA lid, i have some here in stock, however although i can paint a lid to the cars Toyota colour code it is no guarantee it will end up matching, new paint is often a totally different shade to the cars 25 year old paint. You would be better off getting someone local to match/paint it.

Thanks Paul :)

Does the strip of metal in the 'A' part of the lid remain or do you cut them out?

Paul Woods
21-03-2014, 06:56
The whole original Mk1 underwebbing remains when i supply the lid, you can then cut out as much or a little as you want, however if you remove too much near the catch it will need reinforcing.
