It's been a while since we built one of these but they are still a firm favourite among Mr2 engine swappers. This one is getting a chargecooler set up too.

Work started by dropping the old engine out and also the fuel tank to replace the pump for a turbo item.... it was then we discovered a mouse nest on top of the tank :)

Sadly we had to evict him!

The bay has since had its engine mounts removed, new ones welded in and the whole bay resprayed...

The extra heatshield has also been made and ECU,coilpack and injector resistor pack mounted. The engine goes in on monday which looks like this....

:jump::jump::jump:

Holly shit it is finally happening.

An egine conversion has been planned for nearly a year now with me changing my mind on what to go for. A V6 turbo was planned but my buget changed and i have finally decided on a 2L turbo.
I am so excited i dont know what to say as this car means alot to me. It was given to me by my friends mum and dad, as he died in a go karting crash.

The car is called "The Goatley Project" after my mate "The Goat".

Anyway, want to give a big thanks to Paul for putting up with me and all my questions. The engine looks the tits great colours. Progress is going really quick, cant believe how much you guys have done.

Thanks again Paul. Oh i wondered what that squeek was coming from the car LOL.

24-04-2009, 21:09
Tim, that thing will massively fly!!

A chargecooled rev 3 is the Holy Grail of the stock engines. If you up that boost to 16psi, you'll be seeing around 275bhp (conservatively, I'd say). With virtually no lag.

I'd not fancy a race against you mate

A2W?! Very, very nice looking motor! What's that 3S outa? Caldina or something?

Either be a Rev 3/4/5 MR2 Turbo with an Celica GTFour CC on it, or from and ST205 Celica :)

24-04-2009, 23:29
Yeah its out of a rev3 import with about 50,000 miles on it. Took your advice about the charge cooler Johnny, thats off a gt4.

Not sure what other mods are going on the engine. Looking for about 280bhp.

Suspension, brakes and poly bush going on. Any other suggestions will be great, if my budget can strech.

GregHoon
24-04-2009, 23:34
Maybe look at what murf managed with water injection. Keep the engine lasting longer? Plus it's an extra gadget to show off!

Murf
25-04-2009, 00:06
I got a proper water injection tank now, binned the tupperware! Pics when i get it fitted! WI is a good mod, safegaurd the engine and increase power.
I dont think you'll need more power mods, other than an AVCR. It'll be plenty quick, in fact the first time you drive it hard, you'll shit yourself!!
Get some decent tyres though and maybe a really supportive drivers seat :)

biteme
25-04-2009, 01:04
AVCR's are good, but expensive.

Tim, if you can stretch to it, get on the phone to Ryan @ 2BarTuning about an ECU with boost control. He'll map in 1.3bar for you and you'll be changing trousers with great regularity.

rattymr2
25-04-2009, 06:52
Even when you get it back on stock boost it'll be quick.

Please take it easy and get to know the car before really giving it some, especially as it has rather more sentimental value to you than most peoples have. would hate to read you crashed it on the way home.

are you getting the rear brakes done as well. Also, consider a Papal vent in the bonnet to calm the front down and a rev 2 onward rear ARB. Apart from that you seem to have the chassis side sorted.

Charged

Nice one Tim, glad to see Mr Woods cracking on with this one!

Ps, I echo was Ratty says.. 1.5's are very fast and need to be treated with respect.. get used to it slowly.. dont take it out on wet roads!

Tim Higgott
25-04-2009, 10:23
Cheer guy's.

Yeah not sure what performance to expect really. Had an Evo V111 MR320, lots of fast bikes R1, blades and stuff.
Can't remember what i said to Paul about rear brakes but think something is being done.
Not sure if the budget will strech to ECU with boost controller, having manual boost controller stuck on for now. I'm sure looking at threads before most people say to run the ct20 at about 14psi 1.05 bar and it will run all day, anything more and the life will shorten. Any thoughts?

People who don't know me i will tell you in advance, i don't know alot about cars so be gentle with me.

biteme
25-04-2009, 11:53
I think you can go to 16psi with the ST205CC fitted.

With mine, I had a Water Injection system mapped in as well and ran 19psi, it FLEW!

Right into a huge rebuild and and a v6 swap hey johnny.

biteme
25-04-2009, 11:59
Nahh.... keep the intake temps down (WI really helps) and you're fine.

Tim Higgott
25-04-2009, 12:25
So whats the difference between a charge cooler and Water injection?

What bit cools down what?

How much approx is WI?

biteme
25-04-2009, 12:29
A chargecooler is an intercooler, just a different type of one.

Water injection is a method of cooling the intake by injecting water (or a mixture of water and methanol) into the throttle body and allowing it to cool the intake down.

If you have water injection set up correctly and then a good chargecooler (like the ST205 is) then your intakes will be very good indeed.

rattymr2
25-04-2009, 12:58
how often do you need to fill the water tank up (and of course how big was the tank)

Tim Higgott
25-04-2009, 13:24
Well i've heard of spending a penny but how much does a WI cost. LOL

Only approx so i have an idea or what bits would i need.

biteme
25-04-2009, 13:50
how often do you need to fill the water tank up (and of course how big was the tank)

It was a 12 litre tank I had (huge!) - and I didn't have to fill it up that often, as it only came in when:

Boost > 14psi
Revs > 4000rpm
Throttle > 90%

i.e. when the engine is under maximum load.

biteme
25-04-2009, 13:52

It's a couple of hundred notes mate. I've got a custom one that Paul Port made - but I know GTech on here (Graeme) has a Devils Own kit. I think its this
http://www.alcohol-injection.com/water-injection-kits-1/universal-19/universal-stage-2-12.html?osCsid=75dd446033aad6185da40facbe53f781

Tim Higgott
25-04-2009, 14:37
So could i have that on standard ecu and increase boost to 16-17psi.

biteme
25-04-2009, 14:41
Yes mate.

But as Ratty says, get to know the car first - as this is much more than just a car to you.

GregHoon
25-04-2009, 15:42
At just 12 psi your heart will be in your mouth every time you boost for the first few weeks. Not to whet your appetite too much .

Maybe think about fitting these things as you get used to the car. Avoid an immediate massive outlay and increase the boost as you get used to it. The shift up from 1st to 2nd even at 12psi will never get old and never seem slow. The WI and 15+psi are going to pay off from 3rd gear upwards :) when you're used to it. There's no rush is there. Johnny knows his stuff, i'd take his reccomendations.

And like ratty and johnny said you will want to get used to the car and keep it in one piece as it means a lot to you. I promise you there will be a time when the back kicks out when you least expect it and you want your reactions to be lightening quick when it does. I have had that many many times lol. The car can handle the power but simply it being tso powerful and rear wheel drive you will be suprised what it can do.

I envy you having your first drive in one ahead of you. Like murf says. You will shit yourself :boogie:

biteme
25-04-2009, 15:47
Cheers Greg! lol

One more thing, if you were using the stock SW20 Intercooler, you'd not get full boost in 1st and possibly only full in 2nd on cool days. However, with the ST205, you'll get full boost in 1st and 2nd.

Tubby with ST205 has less lag than a stock intercooler, so you're in for all sorts of good things!

The first time you do boost it, make sure you know the road, it's clean and straight! lol

GregHoon
25-04-2009, 15:57

2x toyo 205/50/15 RT1 £98 delivered. An onlline store of which the name escapes me at the moment. Can handle full boost with no slip. Have an idea that olber is the man to ask about this. Can remember him advising someone else on tyre choice. Still less than £50 a corner and it handles the power (in the dry - wet and all bets are off in a mk1.5) can't argue with that.

Tim Higgott
25-04-2009, 16:15

17" wheels on there 205/45/17 cant remember the make but are not very grippy. Not sure what size J they are but think i can get 215/45/17.

Is it worth trying to get 225/45/17 on the rear and either the same or 205 or 195/45/17 on the front.

biteme
25-04-2009, 16:31

Tim Higgott
25-04-2009, 16:37
defo 205's on there at the mo johnny. Not sure if 225's will fit the wheel. What do you think of the smaller tires on the front?

biteme

But if you've got quality rubber on there (not your durex lol) then you're already in decent shape.

OlberJ
25-04-2009, 17:18
99% sure you've got yokohamas on there Tim.

On a Mk1 i like having the same width tyre all round. It's a more square wheelbase than the Mk2 and suits it rather than having to over tyre the rear to balance the car out.

Hi Guy's and Girls.

Sorry i cant seem to start new threads so will just carry on with this.

Need some help. As you can see, Woodsport are doing a great job on my car and i cant wait to get her back but we could have a small problem. BRAKES!:eek2:

ST165 and st205's are a bit thin on the ground so i will start off with does anyone know where i can get some, If not what are the options. Do i put stock ones back and hold off till a set come about or do i look at a set of wilwood brake upgrades or alike?. What would be better? budget could go to £600-£700 quid. Didnt really want to spend that as was gonna get custom pipe made but may have to wait.

Opinions please and thanks.

Just booked my train tickets for thursday the 4th june. Its collection time

:driving:

Tim Higgott
04-06-2009, 20:55
Well today started off early, 4 o'clock rise to get the 5:30 train from Dartford. Journey was very good with no delays and i phoned for my taxi (woodsport) when changing trains at Darlington.
What can i say about the service i have received from Woodsport apart from excellent.
Paul was waiting in his car for me and Lisa. I started to get a little nervous as we approached Woodsport. The realization of seeing The Goatley Project with a beast of an engine was sinking in.
As we pulled up she stood in all her glory, i could of dropped my trousers right there. She had been cleaned and looked better than Amanda holden's breasts in that red dress (or was that just me).:wierd2:
Then the bonnet was opened :praise2: I can't thank Olie, Anth and Paul enough.
The 4 and half hour journey home awaited so we said our goodbyes and left.
Paul told me to take it easy on the way home and give it some beans nearer home.
Running standard boost at the mo which is about 0.3bar which on a rev 3 is about 240 bhp.
It cruises along the motor way at what ever speed you fancy. If you are going along at 50-60 in 5th and put your foot down it happily goes over 3 figures on a closed road:angel:
Acceleration is quick, not sure what the 0-60 times are but i could hear the starship enterprise phrase in my head "We need more power captain".
I'm popping up to Matt at AFR Tuning next thursday so we will see what we can do.
I've also had the kws brakes but cant say much about them yet as i havent really used them, will keep you all updated.
The koni suspension and poly bushing make a massive difference. The car really does handle fantastic.

Anyway signing off for the mo as i'm knacked!

Thanks again to all at Woodsport

I was trying to keep my eyes on the road while lisa was watching the boost gauge. Spoke to Paul today and he said it should make 0.7 bar on a third gear pull, apparently wont make full boost in first and second, which i think is what we were looking at. Anyway, please sir can i have some more boost :hehe:.
So who out there has a rev 3 who can tell me the best way to get around the fcd when upping boost. Now as i have said before i dont know alot about cars so i hope i get this right. Paul tried the fcd that he normally runs on the rev1 and 2, however on the rev 3 it runs like shit. Its something to do with the ecu. Now i know i havent explained it that well but do you understand.

biteme
05-06-2009, 17:14
The fuel cut on the Rev 3+ shouldn't come in until 19psi - and you don't want to run that much on a CT20b turbo.

Just get a boost controller and go up to 16-17 psi

antnkel
05-06-2009, 17:18
1.2 bar would be the absolutely most you would want to run without blowing the turbo up:blowup:

Will dig that one out, just hope it dont turn into fire starter.

Just been out for a run with my mate so he could keep an eye on the gauge. 1st and 2nd making 0.5 bar and 3rd between 0.65-0.7 if splitting hairs. So sounds about normal. I must say that when you get into third it really does go.

Brakes are beding in well and getting better and better.

1st and 2nd making 0.5 bar and 3rd between 0.65-0.7

There's two things, your boost gauge won't be 100% accurate, but won't be far off. Also, the location of the sensor for the boost will affect the reading, so I'd be perfectly happy with that one dude.

My AVCR and boost gauge used to be about 0.1bar apart, with the gauge under reading.

As for the boost controller, my advice would be to get a good electronic one. Blitz make a stunning one which looks really cool. The AVCR is good, but can be a pain to set up.

I had the AVCR, but given the choice now, I'd take the Blitz. Dial in 1.2bar and enjoy

Yeah, simpler is usually better with boost controllers! I used to have a Blitz DSBC which was 1/4din sized and dead easy to use, I think they stopped making it but if you could find a s/h one that would be my recommendation.

Just a quick update.

Just come back from afr and it good or bad news depending how you look at it. Power is defo down on my car. Didnt get it on the dyno but Matt took it out and said its defo down. He estimates 180-190 bhp as a bum on seat test. There is another mk1 there and he said it is much quicker and thats been on the dyno at 240bhp. For me this was really good news, i have so much more to come.
Need a different exhaust and some other tweeks but the only bad news is i cant get it done by Jap show.
Anyway no rush as i want to get the tuning done properly and it will be good to see the difference once its done.

Also had a lot more time to give it some good drives and the report on the handling is fantastic. The konis and polybushing have transformed the car. Brakes are now working great, still not given them a really good test.

Got my first power slide coming out of a corner:hehe:

It's not good news if it's down 50 bhp something really wrong there.

11-06-2009, 15:03
Don't want to guess at the mo. When it goes in he will check it out. As i've said before i dont know alot about cars but it seemed quick but not that quick. In Matt's experience he said it was slow for a car that should be 240bhp. The figure he quoted off the top of his head after driving was 180-190bhp, this was from him driving previous cars. I'm really not that worried as it will all get sorted. I know how many niggles cars can give and being a second hand lump you never know what your gonna get. Once its set up i'll be burning rubber.
I watched top gear awhile ago and remember them havin some renault thing they were trying to get round the track. From memory the car was 40bhp down on what it should of been from the factory. so with this in mind and an N/A exhaust pipe on a turbo engine restricting it, I can't wait for another couple of weeks to get this in.

biteme
11-06-2009, 15:07
It'll get sorted mate!

What exhaust are you running?

snowtigger
11-06-2009, 15:26
You could always put it on the mobile rolling road they some times have at the pod they won't fix it but could give you a ruff estimate of bhp.

biteme
11-06-2009, 15:38
I think it's one of two things.

1. Either the distinct lack of lag on the CC is making feel slower than it is. But in actual fact, they're quick...or

2. The N/A exhaust is restricting the tits off it. If it IS an N/A exhaust on it, do not up the boost until you've changed it.

Tim Higgott
11-06-2009, 16:20
Its a Lotus elise exhaust and its all going to be done together johnny. Electronic boost controller (Gizmo) set for 1.2 bar, Custom exhaust, set up and dyno.
The pipe it very restrictive at the mo but as i said to Paul i wasnt to bothered about it as i knew i'd get a custom one. Paul put something together for me to get me sorted for a couple of months.
Woodsport have done a fantastic job on all of the install. I had told Paul that when it left Woodsport it was going to Matt at AFR Tuning, so this is stage 2.

Snowtigger thats a great idea, if its there i'll get it put on to see the difference later.

Ok guy's and girls latest update.

Custom made exhaust (when i get time i will take pictures) and a gizzmo boost controller fitted, all done at AFR Tuning.

As you know it was running at 185BHP before any mods and we knew the exhaust was one of the main problems. Well back on the dyno with the boost set as standard 0.7 bar and exhaust fitted we see a healthy improvment to 220BHP:jump:.
No FCD fitted so boost cannot go to 17psi at the mo so Matt ran the car until it cut. 11.31PSI or 78KPA. Car made 251BHP on a very hot day with intake air temp at 42 degC.:jump:
Took the car out for a run and all seemed ok but now it has started to cool down the car cuts so i have reduced boost to 9.42psi or 65KPA. Not fussed about having to turn the boost down as FCD will be fitted next thursday and will be running 18psi:eek2:.
HAPPY DAYS.

A big thanks to Matt for all the advice and service.

Big thanks to Ollie for sorting my insurance out so quickly today.

Will update again soon.

Cheers

Well it dosen't rain it's pissing down.:help:. Well i had a small oil leak from my sump which is what you get with second hand engines, no real biggie. Ordered a new sump from toyota (£130 trade)which was a little different to mine, it had a slot for an oil level sensor which mine didnt have. Again no big problem, a quick call to Paul asking for an old sensor that i wasnt bothered about working just to fill a hole and i recieved it a couple of days later:thumbsup:
So Sunday just gone i decided that i would fit it. Fitting went well and i was really proud of myself until i checked after about 10 minutes running. Very small leak coming from around the sensor area. Well again no real biggie but i had run out of time as i was doing it at work. On monday i asked one of my guys at work just to re-seal the sensor. Well My mate came in and said "Tim you have done nothing wrong, it coming out of the mounting bracket round the sensor, it's not welded properly". Again no big problem he took it off, welded it up and problem sorted, no leaking oil now:thumbsup:.

Part two in a min, i'm at work.

Part 2.

Well, while we were looking for oil around the sump we noticed a small leak at the front of the car. Under further inspection the leak is coming from one of the small ridged hard line pipes which go behind the steering rack up to the heater matrix. Also the pipes running the length of the car, again the small bore ones look very worn and need replacing. So thats 4 pipes in total. Quick call to Toyota and thats £264.83 inc VAT trade.:icon_eek:

Shit and bollocks come to mind and then i have the install aswell.

Money i was saving to go stand alone.

Not sure if this will help anyone.

I'm running 17" wheels and had Koni shocks and springs put on. If you look at the picture olber photo shopped for me you will notice the back sits lower than the front. When i first started driving the car around i noticed that if i went over a bump the back wheels slightly rubbed against the wheel arch.
Well i was talking to one of my mates who recommended a cheap way of lifting the back. Grayston Spring Assisters, normally used for towing and apparently drag cars use them aswell. I purchased a set of ge13's and it took 5 minutes to fit both. They lifted the back end by about a inch and i have had them on before i went to Japshow. For £25.00 it sorted me out.

Hope this helps someone.

Sorry to butt in chaps but I've a Q.

Considering the weight difference between the 3S-GTE and 3VZ-FE and 2GR-FE, will something like this be necessary on a 2GR'd Mk1 to keep the stance kosher? I'm sure I read somewhere (probably on a 2GR-related thread) that the 2GR is the lightest of the V6s but these spring / damper combos are surely designed for the standard running gear (and thus overall weight / distribution)?

snowtigger
14-07-2009, 19:41
it all depends what is the standard weight of a 4age and gearbox?.

i don't think the missus will like me using the digital scales to find out though.

Tim Higgott
14-07-2009, 19:51
Best thing to do is get the engine in and see if there are any issues. If there is, it really is a 5 minute job to put these on. Make sure the spring is not compressed i.e get it up on a jack and it really is easy.

OlberJ
14-07-2009, 20:03
If the 2GR is as light as suggested then i really don't think it'll need them.

Be doubtfull if a 1MZ'd Mk1 on the Konis would need them either.

Diesel Meister

Fair points all.

One thing I'm really interested in for the future would be a really good, road usable coil-over setup - custom valved and sprung for the finished article (and preferably not costing upwards of £4k for the parts), with camber plates etc. that should allow proper fine tuning / optimisation of the existing chassis for those of us not ready for a space-frame / silhouette approach.

Where's Jim when you need him? Been quiet for a while. Hopefully beavering away on the above....

Just some stuff i've been upto. Taken out the dual pod for exchange for two single ones. If anyone wants the dual pod i'm not after any money they can either pay for postage or i can take to the next show.

I've been told they work really well, will let you know.

The BMC's are supposed to be pretty good and the carbon enclosure ensures that you'll only be sucking luke warm as opposed to scorchingly hot air ;) Seriosuly though - tidy :)

I'd like an ITG cone with internal trumpet but (a) I'm not sure whether a big enough one will fit and (b) it's exposed foam so ideally would need custom heatshield / airbox to be made up.

All Dyno's are different. I can honestly say it's quicker than my evo mr320 by a long way. When the turbo comes in you are pushed back in your seat hard.

Maxed out fueling. Need fuel pressure regulator and for the first time i think the car is quick. Still not quick enough but gonna enjoy the car for now.

It's not a drag strip car it belongs on the track. Will take it up the strip to get a comparison next year.

A little bit of sex wee came out when i pressed the happy pedal.

Have you got the walbro fitted or the standard turbo pump, the walbro is 255ltr the one up from this is the twin turbo supra pump but I cant quite rember if it's the jap supra or uk one that pumps 308ltr from what I've read and heard from various web sites should be good for 450bhp.

some great times. I will direct Tom onto the site to introduce himself. Will always pop on to see whats going on and you never know what will happen in the future.
Hope all is well with all.

The Goat is going to a good home. I'm sure Tom will come alone he is a really nice bloke.
Have twins of 10 from previous but this is the most excited i've been.

Was thinking about a skyline but i've gone all sensible. I've bought a little Peugeot 206 2.0 HDI.
I'm pushing 90BHP and getting 40mpg round town:hidesbehi:
