I'm looking into modifying the stock seat rails to take a set of Corbeau recliners (base mounted), has anyone got any info on the thickness of steel that would be required for the cross bars that I'll need to use.

I've got a few lengths of 1" by 1/2" box section but the steel's only about 1mm thick and I'm not sure it will be strong enough.

Any thoughts/advice welcome.

I've just fitted a set of side mounted bucket seats to my car. I used some 30mm X 4mm steel bar from b nd q. I think it was £8/per m. Seats don't move.

I don't think 1 mm would be strong enough mate.

Was thinking the same. Will see if I can find some SWG14 box section of the same dimensions. The seat can't be too low.

Sorry to thread hijack but is there any way of mounting an aftermarket seat to the existing runners in a Mk1 to retain adjustability in the fore / aft plane, whilst lowering the seat over all? I fit ok but would like to be an inch or two lower if poss (which is more important than retaining the movement, although that would be useful).

Are they base or side mounts?

I'll be mounting an OMP Bucket seat to the original rails soon and I'm 6'4" so will post up how I do it.

The Corbeaus are for the Mrs' Mk1. :driving:

I mounted base mount cobra's onto the stock seat rails, retains all the fore/aft movement.

I tend to find if you use box section, although strong, it makes the seat too high. I'd use the 4mm flat bar and make a frame that fits on top of the existing modified (chopped) runners if you want to keep the fore aft adjustability, otherwise two lengths of box across the floor from tunnel to inner sill at the right position, reinforced at the mount points will be more than enough to support even my arse!

Hey Murf. I've got the same seat going intp the Mk1. Have u got any pics of how u did it?

Don't mind too much if the seats r high... (only 5ft 5").

Thanx.

Cant remember if i took pics, i'll have a dig later. Basically i just got flat bar and bolted it across the stock seat runners, after i cut the old seat lugs off.
Then i bolted up though the bar into the base of the seat. I tilted the drivers seat up a bit at the front by placing washers between the flat bar and the seat base.

What did you do about the fore-aft adjusting handle, it sits proud of the rails on the mk1.

Cant really remember! Think i stuck a couple of washers between the flat bar and the seat rails till it cleared the handle. I'll have a look later!

Limey - not decided as yet! Most of the ones I've been looking at are side mount if I recall, decided for static brackets. I really like the look of the Border SP4s (Carbon / Kevlar fixed backs) but they're not cheap. I certainly couldn't stretch to two of them for now.

Basically, I'm not fussy - all I want is reasonable price / low weight, good support, slightly lower mounting, low key looks (pref all black) and minimal hassle fitting them. I'll take a side order of moon on a stick if you've got any of that as well lol

Cobra? Corbeau? Or Sparco? No idea yet.

Murf - watching with interest mate :)

Sorry it's just camera phone stuff.

The 1" x 1/2" box section put the seat far too high for me to use the car and even this is a little high for me but I am 6ft 4. lol

Next is the passenger seat and then the OMP bucket seat I bought for the 1.6. :jump:
