Ok after having spent £600 to get a new Blueflame N/A back box and a replacement downpipe made up and all fitted, the exhaust specialist noticed that one of the exhaust manifold studs was broken and the previous person who had worked on it had done a botch job of welding it :(

Unfortunately it was blowing out slightly and ever since the new system has been fitted it has got a lot worse. He didn't want to touch it and recommended that I get the weld burnt out and a new stud inserted so that the job is done properly this time.

Question is, how big/costly a job will this be (its on the rear bank so looks to be awkward and was afraid the engine might need dismounted to get at it properly) and has anyone had this problem themselves? My own mechanic does not do any welding so thats that option out, though I'm tempted cost wise just to get it refilled with weld since the whole system is new and shouldnt need to come off for a while >:[

If its the manifold to downpipe stud, do your best to drill/grind it out, and use a nut and bolt on it if there is room above the flange.

do you mean the manifold to head studs? if so if its benn welded in badly think it might be ahead off job to get hole welded up then new hole drilled and tapped

No its the two bolts on the manifold that you attatch the exhaust downpipe to

As Rob says, do it off the car.

If we get a snapped stud we'll weld on a nut and use the oxy-shitolene to heat it up and try to get it to shift. All else fails though, drill it out and use a nut n bolt.
