View Full Version : Mk1 digital dash project

Thought you might like to see the early stages of a mk1 digital dashboard ive been working on.I already pioneered the astra digi dash mod for the mk1 many moons ago,and that is a nice dash but its far too buggy.Ive got two of them sat here and there is at least one fault on each unit, its a shame because otherwise they look great! Anyway i decided to build my own true digital dash replacing as many of the analogue mk1 displays as possible.

It still needs a lot of work but so far ive replaced ....
volts (top left)
oil pressure (top right)
water temp (bottom right)
tacho (middle left)
and an extra gauge which is oil temp (middle right)

http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2008/09/157.jpg

The only ones i haven't managed to replace are fuel gauge and speedo.

A quick vid showing it from different angles....

http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=Q3B25W3Yeds

I like this dash because it shows the values as actual numbers instead of needles that aren't giving you the full picture, for example i now know exactly what volts my alternator outputs at any given time instead of guessing.

Im planning on making chrome or aluminium bezels for each display to finish them off.

That's looking pretty slick mate, nice. Know what you mean about buggy Astra dash, took me 6 dash units to get one that works okay!
Even got an Carlton GSi one if anybody wants one.

ive just bought a bag of 10 chrome shower curtain rings off ebay for the bezels lmfao!

Paul Woods
28-09-2008, 11:41
i used race x digital gauges then stripped the fronts off them....

lol nice to see you went for a cheap option then hehe... it'll look sweet if you put it all behind slighly smoked glass!

Paul Woods

i got them cheap, most half price plus a trade discount so it didn't work out too badly..... smoked screen, like it

If you're stuck for a digi speedo / fuel gauge give me a shout and I may be able to sort something out for you

oh id love a digi speedo! nice big numbers like the astra dash, but how do we keep the mileometer?

the fuel gauge would be cool to replace too,im guessing you need resistance sender readings from min to max? i can do that.

Guy in the U.S. (EMSpowered.com) is building these for the mk.2 now. This pic doesn't show it, but he has a digital boost gauge in the middle as well. Looks like he found a fuel gauge that works, so no biggie, I suppose?

On the left, water temperature over fuel level (in gallons). On the right, Oil Pressure and Oil Temp.

Baktasht is on here too.

I'd have kept the rev counter as analog and gone digital with the rest. Shame it's the only one you NEED to change lol

That the way I hope to have mine in time. Big analog rev counter and nothing but numbers to confuse you at high G's.

OlberJ

Or you could have a digi rev counter that changes colour (no not randomly) but goes from say green to red as you approach the rev limit.

Kinda like internal shift lights.

SlipSlide

Perfer dials for rev's.

A band of lights is just not in your face enough when your hurtling into a corner with the back end trying to pass you on the outside while matching gearbox and engine speed with your toes at the same time as counter steering and braking.

And the girls say we cant multitask, when we can, its a carlsberg moment.

Just my thoughts on that one.

OlberJ

If it's that crucial you should be doing your rev counting aurally. lol

Agreed though, it's nice to have it analogue.

Digital clusters are good but aye some really need to be analogue. How about a backlit LCD rev counter like the ZX10 -sweeps like analogue:thumbsup:

You could have a look at some of the stuff Dakota digital do in the States.

Ah, I see!
However, that was the only place I could find the fuel gauge and speedo that Paul was after. Not cheap though.
( Is cheap a dirty word then?) lol

would a 7inch monitor do something similar just have to make a tiny pc and interface software for all the inputs.

has no one tryed it yet?.

And paul that looks stunning mate good job just need to find a way of digitise the speedo, mk2 electrical sender and some kind of leccy unit then.

That's good to know. I needs to get myself a unit and get it built.

We actually built the gauges and the firmware from scratch, which is why it took so long.
