EDIT: Fast forward to post #124 for the 2gr-fe stuff.

Thought I'd better get in on the act, seeing as my conversion is well under way. My car as it arrived before the 'magic' began.

Back from the Hols, the dutifull sunbathing bit with the missus done. Seen the wheels back on - I take it the V6 is in! Any pic's Paul? Can't tell from the 'cam' if the new exhaust is on - does it sound ok?:hyper:

Exhaust is almost done, should be running on that lovely Berk come Monday.

I can't wait to hear it, beautifull bit of kit.

Mind me asking how much it set you back Pete?

Paul Woods
28-09-2008, 16:46
aye sorry for the lack of build thread on this one pete, time simply hasn't permitted, the conversion is all done bar a bit of exhaust welding which is being finished on monday morning...i can't wait to hear that exhaust myself!

pilotpete
28-09-2008, 19:32
Picked up the exhaust at a bit of a bargain (if it sounds right) on IMOC for £280. Made the guy a cheeky offer as it was virtually unused, and he accepted. I think GTS Chris is selling them at £384.

OlberJ
28-09-2008, 22:23
Nice one. It really is a sexy bit of kit.

Anth started it up the other day and i thought, fook me that's a bit loud, what a shame.

Then i noticed the backbox was in place but the downpoops weren't. :hidesbehi

Any news on the exhaust? Anxious to know if it sounds okay. Also, have the HT leads turned up yet?

Paul Woods
01-10-2008, 18:06
hi pete, its the best news you could ever expect, the exhaust sounds absolutely magnificent! best i have heard up to now bar none, not as raspy as the H and W system so it ticks all the boxes for me,i love it!

All we are waiting on now are those HT leads, give them a gentle nudge please squire.

OlberJ
01-10-2008, 18:20
It does sound the danglies. Makes it sound bigger than a V6 without being too loud.

Am 50/50 on this or the Skytune am afraid though.

I took a video but the audio on my phone is a bit crap, can upload it if you want though?

pilotpete
02-10-2008, 11:02
 Yes please!! Would love to see a pic of that engine bay, if poss', hoping that I got the right combo' of colours. If not, then you would still have time to re-do it (;) ). I'll give the guy a ring about the leads.

pilotpete
02-10-2008, 11:14
Back again - the guy making up the leads has been waiting for the silicon lead to be delivered. He will chase them up and let me know.

OlberJ

Will give Paul a slap and get him to sort out some pictures 2moro.

I promise it's not as loud as that, jus my crap phone. It does sound bigger than a V6 though. Nice and racey, jus what the fezza kit needs.

Even based on Olie's poor old phone, that sounds terrific. Need to hear more of that, its total music that one.

Howlin_Mad
02-10-2008, 20:12
How does it compare to the Japspeed Olie? Love mine to bits but i fear the motorway journey to Santa Pod is going to leave me tone deaf!!

Kieren

OlberJ
02-10-2008, 20:44
The Japspeed has more bass, especially on tickover. Jus like on a tubby application.

This Berk jus seems to reverberate the sound to a different note and then really rasps out at higher revs, does sound very fezza like.

They're similar exhausts due to sizing etc, just the idle bass is more on the Japspeed i reckon.

Paul,
Latest on the HT leads - they can't do them!! After a couple of months of stringing me along, but they can get me a set of Magnecors for an extortionate price. I told them I could have bloody done that months ago!! I will sort out a set later, meanwhile they are sending the originals back to you. Shame on you H&H Ignition Solutions! See you Saturday Paul in the Securicor van (full of Hobnobs!)
P.S Anyone know the cheapest source of Magnecor KV85's?

Got her back home yesterday after my aborted trip last weekend! Overheated halfway back down to something as simple as the spring decided to collapse in the coolant pressure cap! The offending item was replaced with a 'Blitz' item, which I understand Paul is going to fit to all conversions in future to prevent this problem. Anyway, glorious run back and enjoyed the sound of that exhaust, especially when safely nearing home and opening it up some more. Brill job again Paul and the rest of you guys - finished all the Hobnobs? Pete

Yes, still standard. They did say it was running a bit rich towards the higher revs. Not sure about altering the AFM - I've read the threads and it appears there is some confusion about whether to turn it anti or clockwise to lean it out? Anyone certain which way?

Same here Nige. Even though mine didn't have the porting done on the heads, it feels so strong through 3rd/4th gear, I wouldn't be surprised if it wasn't around the same. Maybe something do do with it being such a young engine...

The original manifolds are restrictive there could be decent power gains to be had from an aftermarket set of manifolds.

And why go for it if you have a turbo box?

biteme
07-11-2008, 14:46
What does it do?

It makes each gear around 9% longer. For instance, if you hit 57 in second at the limiter, you will then hit, 57*1.09 = 62mph.

biteme
07-11-2008, 14:47
And why go for it if you have a turbo box?

It's only available for the turbo box as an upgrade of the final drive.

The non-turbo box can upgrade the 5th gear ratio to a longer one for better motorway cruising.

How's the chain and tensioners Paul, they look pretty good from what a remmber on the discusion they don't need replacing till you get into the high mileage range.

Plus for those people who are swopping out a3vz or 1mz to fit the 2gr what kind of instalation time and costing?

Just a thought to those people on the next group buy who may have had a v6 conversion or maybe some body buying a ready converted v6, but wanting to upgraded the power plant may find it cheaper to upgrade to a 2gr rather than go forced induction.

Paul Woods
16-01-2010, 17:08
With engines as low mileage as these there should be no need to worry about anything for a very long time.

Installation time is a few weeks and i can do good deals on the old v6 engine coming out.

Gouky
20-01-2010, 20:33
funny thing about those headers. I knew there was no way they could be seen in the car, the design I sent out for manufacturing was never intended to be polished. but it does make for some awfully pretty pictures during installation.

Berk (the manufacturer of my header design) went the extra mile on the workmanship of these.

the reason they twist like they do is because they are equal length and the angle of each pipe coming into the collector is almost equal to prevent the gases from fighting each-other on the way out.

that's also the reason why the O2 bung isn't on the collector. being that close to the join point it was too much of a flow interruption. instead it just gets put on the y-pipe.

Torero
20-01-2010, 21:46
I understand the thought that has gone into the manufacture and the physics around the gasflow but to polish them -which is another process involving time and labour - just shows the pride they have in their product.

A great buy Marc.

I find it odd that it is claiming 26% fuel trim. what base fuel pressure are you running? this gets affected by the MAF tube diameter also.

running at +26% concerns me slightly. i'd see if you can bump up the fuel pressure to 50-55psi to get nearer the +/-5% mark

but it's also entirely possible that this is just the standard operating condition for an ECU that hasn't learned yet. i admit i haven't hooked up a reader to mine with a freshly reset ECU.

Paul Woods
18-02-2010, 21:52

finding religion through horsepower. :shades: you know, if the Greeks had cars there would definitely be a god of horsepower.

:amen:

on a more serious note. I'm running p-zero nero tires in 255/35r18 in the rear and 215/35/18 in the front. they do great in the dry and wet but just park the car in the cold, snow and ice. i really consider these a minimum traction tire with the 2GR. if your budget can afford something stickier definitely do it. now that my rears are worn i think I'm about to switch to Dunlop Direzza Sport Z1 Star Spec tires in the same size. another really good choice would be Michelin Pilot Sport PS2 in 225/35ZR18 fronts and 255/35ZR18 rears or 265/35ZR18 if you have wide enough rims.

plus, if you like life, going to a 17 or 18" rim allows you to get Wolfkatz's big brake kit: http://www.wolfkatz.com/products.php?cat=25

As for the brakes, am not sure about the US, but over here I think the stock Rev 2+ brake setup with good, new OEM discs and some Carbotech pads are perfectly adequate when backed up with some DOT5.1 fluid.

It's also amazing just what a good job an alignment can do for putting that power down.

Yeah part of me is thinking a MkII would be a more sensible spot for this engine. Trouble is I have Mk1a....

I was kinda hoping on the rear 15 or 16 by 8in wheels with between 225 and 245s would be enough, otherwise I'll need bodywork as well. Fitting nice tyres (a given) and a 3.9 or 3.6 FD may help.

I can't spec this in advance until I know from Paul what offset and stud pattern I need. Am also thinking of some custom steels for an alternate set of tyres. Plus a trip to a specialist for an alignment - somewhere like WIM.

But anyway, back on topic - Pete, you're a lucky bastid. Go annoy some 911s!

that video is actually a good part of the reason i went to the 3.625 FD. 1st and 2nd gear is just good for launching yourself into the scenery with the stock 4.285 gears.

and keep in mind in an MKI you have less weight so you don't need quite as much rubber. if 245 is the best you can fit, then so be it. just get some seriously sticky rubber and you'll be fine.

Don't forget the basics, chaps. Good alignment, correct pressures - and your tyres will last longer than you think!

Pete, some R888's might be in order, or even some traction control :)

absolutely. i've also found that the torque and the abuse will quickly kill the bushings which then make your alignment somewhat variable/random.

the chassis simply isn't designed for double the power, some additional care is required to keep the alignment in check and the bushing wear under control.

and the anal leakage under control!

You guys just don't realise how violent this engine is, i've certainly never felt anything like it.... makes me look at my v8 and wonder what the hell i'm doing!

DM we will be carrying out a mk2 rear hub conversion on your car, there is just no way a mk1 outer spline is going to cope with this. So your wheels may be 5 stud on the rear unless we do a 4 stud conversion.

We think a mk1 2gr is going to be absolutely insane.

I can't wait till dm gets this conversion to see how many adult diapers I need.

For tires I have heard f1s or toyo proxys and r888s.

F1's aren't made anymore in the directional tread.

For me, it's Michelin Pilot Sports, Pirelli PZero's then Toyo Proxy T1R.

R888's are good for dry days, crap in the wet and terrible on the dyno.

Won't be giving it too much thrash at first, so will probably wear those tyres out first (couple of weeks!), that's if Anth' leaves any on them! Better start pricing some stickier tyres.
Paul replaced all the bushing when he put the last engine in and the car's only done about 300 miles since I fitted the coilovers and had a full alignment done.( Off to watch that video again). Roll on next weekend!!!!!

What size boots are on the back??

Outstanding !!!

You need some "stoat" sly video clips....i predict the 3vz/1mz engines being made redundant now !!

Top work

Suppose with the change in engine weight at the back some adjustment should be made as well as big rubber !!, great stuff !!

I think they are 245/45/17's and 235's on the front.

I have 225s and 215 by 17 inch on the mk1 hope this is enough, as any bigger on the fronts and it would rub against the bottom of the spring platform.

I may have to get some coil overs if going bigger rubber.

That's the reason I had to get coilovers.

+1 for the Toyo Proxes (not proxy), they are great in the dry and the wet (although i dont think driving this beast in the rain is smart with any tire :) ), and over here they arent that expensive (i used to get them from germany, for some reason most tires are cheaper there, must be to do with the autobahn rotflmao)

And on a sidenote, im not anywhere near suspension yet, but for curiocity's sake, what will a suspension allignment set you back?

Usually around £120 for a full 3-D alignment with before and after prints.

I would have thought a good alignment / geo adjust will be between £60-£150 depending on how much work (i.e. time and adjustment). I last had a geo done on a MkII Golf GTi and it was £60 for 4 wheel laser alignment, geo adjust and balancing. Took about 90 min. But that was about 6-7 years back at a garage that knew me well enough.

Paul - cool. I can deal with 5 stud rear. I've been looking at some styles of wheel that will come in both 4 and 5 stud fitments. The alternative is either mismatching or £££ custom wheels. Insanity is a bridge I'll cross when I come to it I guess lol

Just been looking at rear tyre prices, 245/45/17's and found these:-
Toyo Proxes @ £127
Pirelli PZero @ same price
Michelin Pilot Sport @ £166
Prices are - delivered to me without fitting.
Anyone know of cheaper ones?

Anyone else thinking how good this intake would look skinned in carbon fibre......

Got me thinking now....could this be done in vinyl or is there too much heat around there? If not, who does 'skinning' - hopefully in the Derbyshire/Yorkshire areas?

biteme
24-02-2010, 12:17
I'd not skin that - the heat would make it bubble, probably.

I meant more the proper CF skinning kits you can get from www.carbonmods.co.uk Johnny - thus making a CF cocoon for it....

while i do think it could look pretty neat skinned, i'm not sure if the heat won't be a problem.

personally if i was to do anything with it i'd just drop it off somewhere to get painted. there are some seriously good plastic paints out there that will certainly put up with the heat.

snowtigger
24-02-2010, 12:26
Plasticote do them but you have to really degrease every thing and rough the plastic up other wise it just peels of looking rather crapy after a year or so.
