to finish off the off side ive altered the intake slightly by removing the fins and fitted an apexi filter (a bargain £16 from ebay)
ive got to adjust it slightly but you get the idea.

you certainly cant get a much better cold air feed than that!

V.effective  but careful the thieving scrotes don't rob your filter.

Nice idea - similar to my Viper kit on the current Mk2 with a cold air feed:

http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2008/06/249.jpg

Trying something different on the V6 with twin Toms Scoops with cold air feeds directly feeding into a Y collector for the Viper. Only as a test - bloody hate the look of them scoops!!!!

There's more air comes in froim the side vents than over the top quarter where the roofs go am led to believe.

Anything on the engine lid area should be for exiting hot air, not feeding cold.

Ah ye HM's one is the one i seen on a mk2 before to, i just forgot but i knew i had seen it somewhere!

Aye, but i'll be brutalising the 2 scoops - not using them in the normal fashion but running some cold air feeds solely for the induction kit up the middle of them so not to affect the air flow in the engine bay. By my fag packet calculations should give a much better flow for the induction once on the move in 3rd gear plus over 3.5Krpm.

thanks for the replies , viper looks good too.
i'll probably sit it a little further in.
how do you clean these filters? i once washed a ram air filter under the tap and it fell apart, i dont want that to happen.
also is it safe to spray the filter in wd40 once clean?

I was taking the piss RE: the scoop Ol, Paul will know what I'm on about.

I wash mine in soapy water, then spray with the filter oil once dry. Mine's a metal filter though.

There are 2 ways ive been told.

You Soak it in a bucket of petrol over night then hang it up to dry off a bit.

Or

You go into an Auto shop(halfords or somewhere) and buy the Air filter cleaning spray that you spray on it to clean it.

But they might be for a wet type filter or something though:idea:

I have 2 Apexi filters and clean the one that is off the car between services by giving it a good blow out with an airline...seems to do the job ok.

Classic thread archaeology time !

Would a NACA style duct on the other side give a similar cold feed (from the 'nearer' side of the engine bay) ? ala Countach, F40 etc

http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2010/10/38.jpg

More examples here (http://hooniverse.com/2010/08/20/encyclopedia-hoonatica-cars-with-naca-ducts/)

(ah, that'll be where the fuel filler is then :eusa_wall: )

Judging by this pic a NACA duct that side would have to extend into the door...

http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2010/10/39.jpg

It's also a slightly incongruous curved vent shape given the rest of the lines on a Mk1 too...:eusa_whistle:

On a related topic, are the aftermarket, fg, vents that reach up from the side of the engine lid and around the flying buttresses actually functional/effective ?

There called engine scoops and Are as rare as rocking horse droppings, they split opinions as to there effectiveness I think if you plumb the air filter in to the scoop at least the engines drawing in cold air rather than the hot air.

Not that rare Tiggs  !

Just very pricey (http://autobahnmotorsports.com/autobahn/aerokits/85-89%20mr2/85-89mr2.htm) :eusa_whistle:

Hmm - looks like I'd have to relocate the passenger door handle as well, as it's probably going to get in the way of the duct. Easy job then ! lol

There not rare in the states just rare over here, and once you pay for posting over here the price goes way beyond what there worth also painting them, I don't suppose i could buy them then get zombie wings to make some carbon ones.

Is there enough depth in the flying buttress to relocate the fuel filler there ? You could just extend the fuel hose up (assuming there's enough thickness in that section to accomodate a fuel filler neck). I thought I'd seen someone move it there before ?

Was talking to AdamH today (good to see you mate) and he was saying that Woodsie once relocated the fuel filler to the side panel next to the engine lid.

Edit: found the TB thread

That cap was my first attempt, a triumph spitfire one, the current one is a fiat coupe 20v one which i much prefer but some people prefer a flush fitting style.

Would it possible to mount the filler cap/neck to the (out)side of the flying buttress Paul (next to the quarterlight window) ? Assuming you could block off the air vents that go into the passenger-side cabin ! Tbh I'm not mad keen on it being right next to the engine lid (I'm clumsy).

Looks quite possible...

Ooh, nice one mate  Knew I'd seen it done somewhere :eusa_drool:

Of course the 222d doesn't have to worry about the thickness of the stock buttresses (seeing as the entire engine is now enclosed - hmmm.)
