So I've had my engine int he car for a bit over 1,000 miles... and something in the gearbox decided to break. I decided to pull the whole thing out and fix a bunch of other crud while I'm in there. Here's my progress so far:

The stereo system that provides my working soundtrack:

Wheels off, fluids drained:
http://dev.caleague.com/~conor/mr2/93v6/photos/fixy/car2.jpg

Almost ready:
http://dev.caleague.com/~conor/mr2/93v6/photos/fixy/garage-mess.jpg

Engine ready to drop:
http://dev.caleague.com/~conor/mr2/93v6/photos/fixy/engine4.jpg

Engine dropped:

The happy couple:

This is what my gearbox fluid looks like... no metal shavings, but it's opaque olive green!:
http://dev.caleague.com/~conor/mr2/93v6/photos/fixy/gearfluid.jpg

Lower intake plenum full of oil.. totally normal for a 1MZ:

Upper intake matches:

Now you see it:

Now you don't:

Nice one dude, transcontinental TB, love it.

The retro stereo is reet up my street too.

When u say the gearbox broke, did it stop working altogether or just get crunchy or u not able to select certain gears?

Will give u a chance to fit the longer 5ht if you're after one too. Every cloud and all that...

Gearbox: There's a rotating clunk that happens once every wheel rotation. The noise definitely emanates from within the case.. I suspect that the LSD may have shat itself (stock Toyota viscous LSD from an MR2 turbo). Shifted fine (except into 1st). With the rear end jacked up, both wheels spin freely in the same direction (in neutral) for about a full turn, then they lock up and start to spin opposite (but it's very hard to turn them). Dunno.. guess we'll see shortly..

RE: Stereo.. That's my defense mechanism against the neighbors! I don't know if you guys in the UK have a problem similar to this, but here we have lots of Mexican immigrants who love to bump their music really loud and very often. It's obnoxious folky music with lots of accordions, tubas and horns (not to mention the crooner vocals). It's a bit annoying to have that blasting into the garage while I'm working, so I have a louder stereo..

This was the old setup before my roommate sold it:
http://dev.caleague.com/~conor/random/rock.jpg

It was.. much louder :x

Oh, and as for gear ratios, I'm using an E53 box from a '93 Camry. Here are my current ratios:

1: 3.538
2: 2.045
3: 1.333
4: 1.028
5: 0.82
F: 3.625

70mph with my tire size is about 2800 rpm in 5th gear :)

Nice box  You considered the S series at all for that bit of extra acceleration now it's gone pop though?

I used to run my decks through my Marshall half stack when i went through my DJin stage. Wish i hadn't, it never sounded the same playing me Lesser through it when the fad passed.

4 X 200 watt speakers kept the neighbours at bay, all hours of the day. And night mind u :hidesbehi

What's the setup with the 1MZ, standard?

Conor
05-06-2008, 00:25
I was going to use the S54 (short ratios, like the BEAMS 3SGE, not your gen 2/3 3SGEs) but came across a good deal on the box I have along with an LSD, axles and hubs. I don't regret it one bit. Cruising at 4000rpm with the 5SFE was bad enough.. the V6 would drive me nuts. :)

Yup... stock 1MZ.. no frills, just a solid motor to scoot me along. Once everything's really buttoned up right, it should be trouble-free driving for years to come.

Just broke a stupid gear puller trying to get the 5th gear assembly off... stupid cheap pot metal POS.. >=/ Guess I'm done for the day.. heh.

Got the box apart a bit.. doing more investigation today. After removing 5th gear and the shifter shaft, the transmission no long gets hung up! I can spin the output shaft by hand freely and in any direction... Suspect a faulty syncro hub for 5th gear... Hrm..

More pics from yesterday..

Got the box off with a little fuss:
http://dev.caleague.com/~conor/mr2/93v6/photos/fixy/6-4-08/gearboxoff.jpg

And apart it comes:
http://dev.caleague.com/~conor/mr2/93v6/photos/fixy/6-4-08/gearbox2.jpg

Steering wheel puller takes care of the syncro hub:
http://dev.caleague.com/~conor/mr2/93v6/photos/fixy/6-4-08/pulling1.jpg

Jaw puller fails to remove a gear:
http://dev.caleague.com/~conor/mr2/93v6/photos/fixy/6-4-08/pulling2.jpg

And this is why:
http://dev.caleague.com/~conor/mr2/93v6/photos/fixy/6-4-08/broke1.jpg
http://dev.caleague.com/~conor/mr2/93v6/photos/fixy/6-4-08/broke2.jpg

This worked much better:
http://dev.caleague.com/~conor/mr2/93v6/photos/fixy/6-4-08/pulling3.jpg

Killed a torx bit removing the top plate beneath 5th gears:
http://dev.caleague.com/~conor/mr2/93v6/photos/fixy/6-4-08/stripped.jpg

One of the retaining ball bolts stripped out:
http://dev.caleague.com/~conor/mr2/93v6/photos/fixy/6-4-08/strippedhex.jpg

So I hammered a T45 Torx bit into it:
http://dev.caleague.com/~conor/mr2/93v6/photos/fixy/6-4-08/solution.jpg

And finally, an animation of the play that my throw-out bearing has.. watch where the bearing meets the output shaft:

Thanks! I'll post more pics as I tear the box down entirely (stopped to work on re-wiring everything).

Meanwhile.. found the problem and ordered parts. Looks like the 5th gear synchronizer (ZZZZZZZ!) rings suffered some clutch surface damage and were locking up every time the output shaft made a complete rotation. >_<

If my engine comes out again - whihc I know it will to do the heads. I'm definately going to tidy the wiring. Get rid of the unsed connectors and strip out the extra wires.

Top work and keep the updates coming

UPDATE! Parts arrived on Saturday afternoon:
http://dev.caleague.com/~conor/mr2/93v6/photos/fixy/parts.jpg

Complete new 5th gear synchronizer hub assembly, a new fuel fill hose (I've broken two so far and they've all been like a rock..), various drain/lock ball plugs and a couple new axle shaft seals. :)

Conor
16-06-2008, 08:24
Spent a few hours on it again today.. in the 95* heat. Ugh. Got almost all of the re-wiring done, though! The harness looks muuuch nicer and won't need to be cut the next time I install/pull the motor lol

On Monday I have to do the inner tie rods on a POS beater I'm trying to get rid of.. so I'm not sure how much V6 action I'll see. Might get the gearbox all torn apart.. we'll see. I want to clean up the case and perhaps repaint a few bits of it while I'm in there. So far, the box is getting:

- Complete new 5th gear synchronizer hub and syncro rings
- New axle seals
- New side and bottom drain plugs/washers
- New shifter shaft lock ball retainer plugs
- New OEM Toyota throw-out bearing

*sigh* can't wait to start driving it again... get it back on the street where it belongs:

Conor is the new fuel filler pipe very flexible. I dropped the fuel tank to fix a leak and that pipe is quite rigid and a bitch to get off.

Conor
16-06-2008, 20:53
^^^ It's absurdly flexible. I've broken two of them dropping the tank (started to flex, then cracked and tore in half both times). The one one is far more pliable. At $40 (yeesh..) it was a bit expensive, but well worth it I feel.

Glad to see Im not the only one with a bunch of broken trans tools, do you have any money left after buying those parts from Toyota? I ended up parting out a SC trans for 5th and reverse ( I think they wanted $500.00 for the gears!) I gotta look for a camry trans, that 5th gear cruise rpm would be real nice. Keep us posted:driving:

Dropping the tank only sucks when the engine is in the car... I had to do it a few times, though.. The last time I dropped it, I had it on the floor in less than 30 minutes (and that's working on my back with jack stands.. no lift). Getting it back in usually takes more fussing and some spider-monkey leg work to hold it up while strapping it in.. ;)

The hub and all the synchros/clips only came to around $100, if I recall correctly.. the individual gears are more expensive, I'm sure.

As for the Camry 5th gear.. you need the final drive for it to work. The individual Camry E53 gears are shorter than the MR2 turbo E153 5th gear.. it's just that the final drive is so much taller than the final result is a taller gear.

I dropped the tank today, fitted a walbro pump, put the tank back in then realised i had to grind something.

Dropped the tank back out and back in again after grinding.

Give me a tank swap any day over taking those fricken mounts out.

Granted doing it with the engine in i'd only tackle with lifts.

UPDATE!

Well well.. Looks like yours truly has blundered once again! I found out what was causing the aforementioned rotating clunk noise.. One of the bolts that hold the differential to the ring gear backed out and started bashing into the bottom of 1st driven gear on the output shaft, which sits directly over the differential assembly inside the case (you can see this in the photos below). Only the driven gear was damaged.. very minor chipping on only a few of the teeth.. and none of the damage transferred to the drive gear ont he input shaft. No stress cracks either. The bolt is soft enough that the gear just wore it down. The debris magnet by the oil pump pick up was entirely full.. there's gunk all over the place!

As usual, sorry about the quality of the photos. My camera is absolutely horrible. :(

First the good news.. wiring harness done!

Love the fact u can just have that sitting there in the open air.

we'd be doing that indoors, on a bench, with the door shut and trying desperately to keep the bits off the floor where they'd be lost forever.

So u doing a clean up, bolt replacement and new box oil?

Thanks, I think! lol I don't have a bench, sadly.. And it was over 100*F out (about 38*C), so there's no way the door would be closed. I try to keep everything tidy (all the parts are laid out on clean blue shop cloth)..

Yah, this is my second time having this box apart..

I'm just going to retorque all the differential bolts and use loctite this time.. and then throw the box back together with the new 5th gear syncro. The damaged parts of the driven gear don't contact the drive gear, and since there aren't any cracks it should be okay. It isn't the right what to do it, but I can't afford another $400 for a new E53 right now. If at all possible, one should never use damaged gears... :x

hey just wandering, i have a '95 manual 3vz camry donor. will it have the same E53 that yours has with lsd and how hard would it be to use (install) in the mr2? fuel prices being what they are.
any way wont the torque from the 3vz negate the need for close ratios? or else i'll just use smaller tyres

OlberJ
21-06-2008, 08:21
I think over in 'merica they put the E53 innards into the E531 box, no idea why tbh, different casing? And no idea if it comes with LSD.

Better ratios for cruising yes.

My thinking is, in a Mk2 where the car is more of a GT cruiser with the V6 then use the E531 or S54 with a longer final drive.

If it's in a Mk1 then use the S54 with that wild 1-4 and get the longer 5th from the diesel box.

If you're running big power then E531 with the longer FD from a sillycar (see Johnny's build)

So basically, match your gearing to the character of the car and how you'll drive it.

Ooo, not sure! Over here, we only got the 3VZ in 1992 and 1993 (which was still a huge pile of Camrys and Lexus ES300s...) and the 1MZ starting in 1994. I really don't know if Toyota ever changed the gear ratios on the overseas 3VZ cars after 1993..

It will not have an LSD, though. No Camry M/T came with one from the factory. Mine is from an MR2 turbo.

And yes, the V6's powerband pretty much eliminates the need to have a short-ratio gearbox. It makes great use of the taller gearing and is very nice to cruise around it, to boot!

So far, I'm the only V6 with E53 gearing. Almost everyone else is using an MR2 turbo gearbox, with a few people using the S54 (as I was going to, originally). Keep in mind that our S54s are geared shorted than yours, for the most part. Only the BEAMS 3SGE cars had ratios as short as the ones we got in all years of non-turbo MR2s.

I'll argue that my E53 has better ratios for everything compared to the S54, too. It's not that much taller in 1st and 2nd gear.. so really, the E53 makes better use of the V6's higher torque output at those lower speeds. With a 6250 rpm redline (5SFE/1MZ are the same), my 1st is 2mph higher than with the S54 and 2nd is about 7mph faster. Third is where the E53 really becomes a hoot.. it's good to 92mph. 4th goes to 120 and 5th to 154 (which is past my ECU-limited top speed, IIRC).

Keep in mind that these gear ratios were chosen for a 3VZFE, which makes less power/torque than my 1MZ.. and they were chosen for a heavier Camry/ES300. As such, they work wonderfully well in this pig of a mk2 ;)

Sorry for the wall of text.. I got carried away :x

p.s. Oh and Olber, when I get around to doing the 1.6, it'll probably have an E53 too ;D

OlberJ
21-06-2008, 17:33
Nairy fuff, if u can get ur hands on an E54 then why not.

As u know, situation over here is that E54's don't exist so it's S54's with longer 5ths or final drives for us.

No idea about down under's options.

Conor mate you've got loads of bits left over lol

Have you had any training? or did you just follow a manual? - as that looks mighty confusing to me :freak3:

Conor
23-06-2008, 19:23
^^^ ha ha! ;)

You can see the manual in the last photo posted. I got onto Toyota's online tech reference service and downloaded it awhile back.. Mainly just for torque specs. I have had some training on manual drivetrains, however.. and I've passed the ASE exam for that category as well (ASE is the automotive certification standard here in the U.S.)

If you have the manual, the right tools and a little patience, you can do it too! The only thing you can't do is press the gears on and off the shafts. Need a shop press for that. Otherwise, the Toyota manuals are very well done, with diagrams that lead you along the entire process if you need. I mainly use it as a reference for torque specs and making sure I don't forget any of the little bits (like the retaining pin that locks out reverse gear when the other shafts are in gear). ;)

so was your car NA or turbo before the swap?
i ask cos my NA gear box sounds tired but cant afford to get new one. was thinking maybe if all the bits swap over could use the camry box like a turbo one; with all the axles and such
i found out my camry has an E53
what you think?

i guess what i'm asking is if your gearbox casing is from a turbo or camry ...is there a diference?

My car is a factory non-turbo. You need MR2 turbo hubs and axles if you want to use the E-series gearbox. Also, the shift linkage on your E53 is on the wrong side of the case, so you'll need an MR2 turbo gearbox center case as well.

The tall ratio E53 gears are preferrable to S54 or E153 MR2 gears, in my opinion.

I often get asked if it's my 1/4 mile time.. which makes no sense.. Because my car would have to run 13.37 every time.. and who the hell would be proud of only running a 13.37? >_<

Anyhow... yesterday I decided to pull the tank and seal up all possible evap leaks with some RTV silicone. Sucker came out fast and after I was done sealing it, I had it back in the car in 11 minutes! Also painted the gas tank fill pipe (it was pretty scratched up) and did some other cleaning. Also found that the primary shift cable (the one that attaches to the shift lever) has become shaped like a tri-oval.. Pretty bad.. I have a plan, though! I have this nifty little bearing that fits the shift cable pin perfectly.. Going to drill out the stock bushing to fit the bearing into it. =D

Horrible job, but mine wasn't as dangerous as yours lol

Looking good Conor - you wanna come and sort my gearbox?

^^^ Sure! I could use a vacation :) If enough of you chip in, the plane tickets will be cheap.. and I can bring E53 gear parts with me! ;)

RE: Spiders.. I don't know why, but my car likes to attract black widows. It's really annoying..

Concentrated on cleaning, sorting the evap hardware and lines out and fixing that shifter bushing today. I rather enjoyed the bushing, since it meant that I got to use my drill and make a mess :D

So I started by drilling it out with a 3/8" bit..
http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2008/06/236.jpg

And then with a 1/2" bit...
http://www.twobrutal.co.uk/forum/images/recovered/2008/06/237.jpg

So that I could fit this in there!

Fits perfectly in the bushing sleeve:

And on the shift lever :)

Wildfires in the region have been blanketing the area with smoke for the last week or so. The end result is a sky that resembles overcast weather..

..and provides bright, neon orange sunsets:

^^^ I'm about to invest in a good respirator.. It's about time anyway. I do a bit of angle grinding here and there as well as the occasional paint work.. neither of which are very healthy to be breathing. :/

That said.. I'm still working on it, and it's almost ready to drive again! Just need to add fluids, drop the car down to torque the axle nuts and throw the b-pipe on and it's good to go!

Modified mount bracket for the front torque mount, gearbox side. The part I hacked off was blocking the second bolt on the exhaust manifold lower flange. Now it can be accessed with a proper socket swivel :)

Ready for fluids

Stripped out one of the four bolt holes that hold the front torque mount bracket to the body.. Ooops. Space was tight, so I hammered the appropriate tap into a 9/32 1/4"-drive socket :)
