Calling All Australian Members!

Help required!

I am looking into taking a job in Brisbane, Australia but not having a lot of luck with finding out whether i can take my MR2 with me. I have a 1992 Turbo in the middle of being rebuilt from the ground up. Transport is not an issue, my company are paying moving costs and there's room in the container for our furniture and a car.

So, the issue is can i get my 2 into Oz? I have had little or no luck finding out, 100%, whether it is acceptable for me to import my car, what regulations i have to obide, import taxes, registration etc.

Can anyone help or point me in the right direction? It would break my heart to sell her here!

were are you bringing the car from?
i have heard of a few people bringing their private cars in with no trouble registering but it depends on which state you go to i guess.
see if you can find out anything from these guys

Basicly you can't import an sw20 out of Japan because it is not on a list, but as a personal import you will hopefully be fine. But just for your info! Good luck with the move!

As far as i know Imported MR2s can no longer be registered:(

But there is word that the import laws are changing in a couple of years.

Go register and ask on here to be sure though.

i had a friend bring a 525i (or some other bottom of the range 5 series) bmw in from the uk a few yewrs back and he said that the conditons for a personal use private import are different. you just have to have proof that the car was registered to you for longer than a period of 12 months (i think it was) in the country you bring it in from. it didnt matter what platform you imported but you could only do this once.


but then again rules change all the time.

Well i shall be in your neck of the woods Wednesday onward for 4 weeks so i will have to do a little snooping while i am out there.
